Black Mirror Season 6, Explained: What Worked, What Didn't and What's Next

  • After a long four years, Black Mirror is finally back - but… was the new season worth the wait? Well, yes and no. These five new episodes see the show move away from its traditional technological warnings of an eerie near-future, instead diving into stories grounded in a foreboding take on the past and our present. So this noticeable shift begs the question - have the problems of modern society become too real for Black Mirror to satirize? Or has the show simply lost the magic that made it so special in the first place, instead becoming a cash cow for Netflix to profit off of?

I would have suggested one extra scene of the episode Mazey Day. Where you basically see that Bo has now become a sort of pseudo-celebrity for being the only survivor of the diner massacre. Bo is now being harassed by all the paparazzi, dooming herself to the same fate she had put people like Mazey through.

Let's add to that: let's say that Mazey didn't die, but disappeared in nature. So now you have Bo living through the hell of being chased by paparazzis for being this "sole survivor of the wearwolf attack" (and she still has the pictures to proove it was real), AND being terrified that Mazey will find her someday.

Joan is Awful was the only one that kinda felt like Black Mirror thematically, though a little too humorous to feel as dark as it should’ve. Beyond the Sea kinda does but they should’ve just made it the future instead of an alternate past. And Loch Henry was more like a straight thriller with a twist that only kinda relates thematically.

It used to be “hopeless” in a way that made you sit and think and contemplate how humanity could actually be corrupt enough to use technology - twist it to unthinkable levels from what it was originally intended to do. but they have now turned it into “quirky”.

Joan Is Awful I thought was a pretty good start to the season, not the deepest episode or anything, but I enjoyed the meta comedy aspect of it, and Annie Murphy was really good.
Loch Henry was my favourite of the bunch, I loved the dark mystery thriller aspect and the skewering of the true crime genre, and the final twist was a shocking gut-punch moment that I haven't seen from the show in a while.
Beyond the Sea had some really good ideas, and both Josh Hartnett and Aaron Paul were excellent, but I think the episode was far too long and really dragged in a few places.
Mazey Day was just awful, easily the worst episode of the entire show in my opinion, with very superficial commentary on the vulture-like nature of paparazzi and a twist that comes right out of nowhere.
Thankfully the season ended on a pretty strong note with Demon 79, it doesn't really fit in with the overall style and themes of Black Mirror, but I liked the dark yet morbidly comedic tone and the performances of the two leads.
Overall, I thought season 6 was a pretty good run of episodes, with only one episode I actively disliked, and the rest ranging from being pretty good to actually great. Not as strong as the first three seasons, but this was still a very inventive and interesting batch of episodes and a marked improvement over the last season

In my opinion the first 3 episodes are good, even very good for keeping black mirror alive in quality (yes, they were mostly predictable but being predictable isn't bad, the how you get there is what matters)
Joan Is Awful could dig more in other variables about AI, privacy, framing of narrative and the unnecesary need of more content
Loch Henry was a great story first and a great commentary second, which gave the mesage of the personal cost of the true crime genre an investment and weight
Beyond the sea had a sort of unique twist where you could see everything's going bad, but he killing his family in order to make a point was a little surprising and having that sort of open ending was something I appreciated
Both last episodes where the worst possible episodes that Black Mirror could possibly do, they could be great on their own but not for Black Mirror
First with the TMZ critique, because they could make a great episode of modern and old harassment of some celebrities where they are clearly harming them, and how some celebrities use the tabloid media for personal advantage, but they didn't do either
The 76 episode has nothing of tech involved, and its hard to make an episode about killing People that "deserve it" when you already did
Maybe involve time travel instead of demons, and have an ethical commentary about killing VS reform people that could lead to the end of the world

Even one episode, Beyond The Sea, I didn’t like the ending of was compelling throughout, as the script was so good, the performances superb and the soundtrack choices. The last episode left me in tears, through the combination of existential despair, the nostalgia (I’m about the same age as the writer, Charlie Brooker) and the song, Bright Eyes, which brought back memories of contemplating death for the first time as a child, as millions of kids around the world did when they saw the movie Watership Down back in the 1970’s. Season 6 is Charlie Brooker making everyone rethink what Black Mirror truly is about, especially since he did complain how people kept perceiving Black Mirror is merely the "tech is bad" show. It probably didn't help that last season: Season 5's technology depiction was shallow (notably Smithereens even though the real issue that Smithereens tackles on is simply how society's using social media and not social media itself) and the technology aspect is becoming less significant as a good bunch of technologies that were shown in Black Mirror have already come to reality (basically think of Disneyland's Tomorrowland Problem where Tomrrowland easily gets outdated and loses its appeal cause "tomorrow always comes" like how space travel and television and other innovative technology and vehicles are now a reality). So Black Mirror Season 6 is Charlie Brooker giving everyone a wake up call and making everyone see what Black Mirror truly is by leaving out the futuristic technology aspect that everyone has grown used to and atttached to with Black Mirror that it is easy to lose sight of what the anthology show is really about. Remember how the pilot episode of Black Mirror, The National Anthem, is not really set in some imaginative futuristic setting bringing up whatever technology that's revolved around, but present day at the time tackling on the government's and society's actions, particularly when the princess was taken hostage and the prime minister was demanded to have sex with the pig to release the princess, the technology used in The National Anthem is merely a supplementary, a contributor to the main issue that The National Anthem is showing: the way information is passed on through word of mouth and news and the relationship between the government and public, with social media and television media simply strengthening those issues.
So clearly, Black Mirror Season 6 is the show deciding to expand more in its storytelling and not be held back into having to use technology to make bring light to concepts, themes, and issues while being being able to tell a compelling story (best example would be Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too where it doesn't necessarily feel like it needs to make use of AI dolls to drive the point of celebrity exploitation). And a lot moreso when Demon 79 is created as a "Red Mirror" story, which I hope we get more Red Mirror stories as Demon 79 was a good promising start in either Black Mirror now creating 2 different types of stories, Black and Red Mirrors, or Red Mirror being a spinoff to Black Mirror.
Fun fact: Charlie Brooker confirmed that Mazey Day is supposed to be also categorized as a Red Mirror story like Demon 79, but labelling Mazey Day a "Red Mirror" story would've ended up giving away the werewolf twist, which honestly all the more shows that the werewolf twist isn't really the real issue with Mazey Day, especially it is meant to be a metaphor with regards to how the paparazzi treats celebrities, rather Mazey Day's story is very shallow, it didn't help the episode was too short, so the whole concept of the paparazzi and celebrity privacy wasn't properly explored and characters weren't really fleshed out, with Mazey Day herself probably the only character who feels like there is some depth as well as Bo, but Bo feels like a missed opportunity to explore her morals, thoughts, and feelings with regards to the paparazzi and celebrity privacy. Mazey Day can only just be summerized as "paparazzis are bad", which honestly they are, but again, the story was shallow.

Joan is Awful: I liked it. But yes, I think criticizing Netflix while being on Netflix lessens the impact. Like when Disney makes fun of itself. Big corporations being self aware of their problems while having no interest in changing just makes my eyes roll. This episode is elevated by the fun cameos and Annie Murphy, who I am just loving a lot lately.
Lock Henry: This one's ok. I have no interest in True Crime, so it didn't connect with me much. The way some characters died would be lame in a regular thriller, and it was lame here. But the results of the crimes and where it leaves the protagonist were darkly ironic, and I always appreciate some darkly ironic conclusions.
Beyond the Sea: Loved it. It's intriguing, with incredible performances. It's focused on the human condition to fix something about ourselves, and it's using technology to show how bad people can be when they abuse it. Basically, it's quintessential Black Mirror. Calling it "predictable" because we know it will end badly, can literally be said about all Black Mirror episodes, so that's not enough to knock it imo. And no, it actually ends in a way I didn't expect .
Mazey Day: Wasn't feelin' this at first, but once it goes were it goes, I popped for the twist. I'm an easy mark for that specific genre. Not very deep or very Black Mirror, so I can understand those who disliked it, but as a good old fashioned monster story, it won me over.
Demon 79: The series is pushing more into straight supernatural now with these last two episodes. I could tolerate one, but not both. Too different, a little campy in tone even, which is a personal turn off. And I'd say Knock at the Cabin did the 'sacrifice someone or the world will end' concept better. It's also the most overtly 'message-y" episode which... yay. My least favorite, easily.

Beyond the Sea & Loch Henry were the best of a bad bunch. The rest were lackluster, boring and soulless.
Black Mirror traditionally focused on humanity's relationship with technology from a sociological standpoint but the horror episodes which Charlie Brooker dubbed the Red Mirror should've been part of a spin off series rather than release under the Black Mirror imprint.

They say Demon 79 has no technology in it… but the robo dogs are shown. This makes me think this is a simulated reality.
I think some people are forgetting the pre-established lore. Demon 79 for example, has MANY hints that these characters are perhaps being simulated. We know it’s possible.
The white bear sign is the biggest tip-off. And given the technology introduced in “Joan is awful” I interpreted red mirror as the black mirror of their universe. A white bear situation but with a cookie in a simulation.
Alternatively, it could be in one of the after-death simulations like San Junipero but a hell version.

Yeah, I’d interpreted as him missing human connection and feeling sorry for himself. He experienced a huge trauma and formed an unhealthy attachment to Cliff’s wife. And Cliff wasn’t necessarily concerned about her safety bc he had no reason to think (JH’s character, forgot his name) was dangerous at that point in the story. I didn’t interpret Cliff as toxic at all, just a bit cold (didn’t touch his wife, uses corporal punishment). I wondered if he’d embellished how Lana felt about (again forgot his name) but I think that was justified considering he’d done the dude a favor just for him to turn around and hit on his wife.
