  • Happy Fathers Day! On Modern Family, we know that Phil Dunphy isn’t "cool" from episode one. It’s reinforced over and over again that he’s incredibly nerdy, with slightly weird interests and goofy tendencies. And yet over 11 seasons, we come to agree with him. He might not be cool; but he is a cool dad. So here are Phil Dunphy’s seven lessons on how to ace parenting - by making it fun, gentle, and packed with ‘Phils-osophy’.

The speech he gave to Haley when she said she felt like a failure because she dropped out of college and she didn't know what to do with her life is truly outstanding. I too was a dropout, but I didn't get the same affection and comprehension from my family. I think that scene alone sums up the beauty of Phil's character.

What i love about Phil is that he's also so fiercely protective and can set real boundaries when their kids take it too far. I feel like a prime example is when the family find out Hayley and Andy have been sleeping together despite Andy being engaged. How Phil takes Andy to the side, and lays it out for him that sneaking around isn't ok and that Andy needs to end it with either Hayley or Beth. Idk that moment just stuck with me. When he saw Hayley and Andy doing something really stupid that will eventually blow up in their faces and will only hurt people, he stepped up and made sure that this isn't okay and they needed to set things right. No jokes. Just clear boundaries.

Phil was a great dad and a good husband, but he got on my nerves. The trope I would like to see talked about is the “spare child” husband. The husband that is often goofy and clueless about things in his own life, especially in his household. So much so, that his wife has to treat him like an additional child in the family. This often makes the mother seem uptight and controlling but she’s understandably frustrated because she can’t rely on her husband to take away from her plate, he just adds to it.

What’s also so refreshing about Phil is he isn’t a bare minimum dad. Too many dads are hyper-praised by doing the bare minimum in parenting, like changing ONE diaper or taking the kids to the movies once, but not helping with homework, cleaning, or boundary setting.
Phil is THERE! What he said to Hayley after her breakup with Dylan was what I needed to hear at 16.

also, the moment he flustered because haley losing her virginity was not because he thought haley supposed to be the perfect virgin girl, it was because she was grew up too fast to his liking, he did the same with like and alex, but he acknowledged it was a part of growing up (when he said "whatever seems right to you" to haley)

The best parenting moment from Phil was when he called Haley out for her immature behavior when she got arrested. Haley was now an adult (or an adult environment) and she needs to own up to her mistakes and she has to understand that her actions affect others

  • @lucypreece7581

One thing I just realised is the way Phil spoke to his children adapted and changed as they grew up because he realised that speaking to a grown adult the same way you speak to a child is ridiculous. My own father realised this. He knows that his two children are grown up adult children. Phil doesn't treat his children like children but he does treat them like his children if that makes sense. He gives them tough love when needed and a shoulder to cry on when needed but he respects them as whole people understands that they are whole people with their own thoughts and feelings and ideas and likes and dislikes and opinions. Good dads grow and adapt their parenting styles as their children grow up. Shame my mother never did this. She expects me to still be a teenager that she can influence and brainwash into becoming like her.

Goofy, loving dads who are only serious about their families are the best dads, in both fiction and reality. Phil is like a more exaggerated and white version of my dad, who alongside my mom raised my siblings and I to be unapologetically ourselves. I saw myself in his relationship with both Haley and Alex.

  • @clarasundqvist6013

Both Phil and Claire remind me a lot of my own parents. My dad was a lot sterner than Phil and the authoritarian/fun parent duties were distributed more equally, but my dad is very much a nerd that's emotionally intelligent while my mom is very rational and solution oriented. I have a really good relationship with my dad, which makes me absolutely adore the relationship between Phil and Hayley because it mirrors ours a lot (older sisters represent!), and it's super fun to watch Phil and Claire do things on the show and go "yeah my parents do that"

Some of these comments saying hes like a child or nit a present father are so weird and deranged.
He was self employed and ran his own successful real estate company, was always attentive to his children's emotions and was always "seducing" his wife.
I think the hate comments maybe didn't even watch the show or are bringing their own baggage into the comment section because even though he isn't perfect 99% of women would love to have a husband like him and 100% of children would love to have a father like him.

    • @MeliDMR93
      @MeliDMR93 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

A lot of the comments calling him Claire's 4th child or gets to go be "fun parent" ignore that he fumbles lot while also doing the thing Claire's asks him for AND that he does more emotional labor than Claire who is (also understandably, 3 kids!) bossy and far too imposing sometimes to get on better communication level with the kids

1 of my fav episodes is when Phil goes to visit Alex in college and she wants to move bck home but he dosen't bc he knows it's not what's best for her even tho he wants to. Then he goes home and realizes the ducks he was keeping at home were also ready to spread their wings. Gr8 episode.

What bothered me the most about Claire's character is that she always lied to her children, specially Alex and Haley, about what she was like when she was young in order to set a "good example" and for her daughters to be different, but it seemed very hypocritical to me. She even went so far as to shame Alex for wanting to kiss a boy and scolding Haley for doing the same things she did.. She wanted to suppress them into prudishness to make up for her wild past.
Instead, Phil always told his children about how he was when like when he was young, even the embarrassing parts that you never say out loud in order to show his experience and set a real good example. If Claire had been honest instead of trying to look like a saint when she clearly wasn't, maybe her daughters would've been closer to her in their teen years. Haley even called her out on her bullshit once and Claire kept lying. She was pathetic sometimes.

i think claire and phil are on such opposite ends of the spectrum. phil is very optimistic, emotional, and kinda silly. claire is more pessimistic, stoic, and .. kinda anxious. at their best, they balance each other out as parents and as partners. phil helps claire see the bright side, helps her emotionally release, and helps her see the big picture. (Also afaik didn't WEAPONIZE his incompetence bc he isn't manipulative he's just genuinely incompetent?) claire helps phil stay grounded, stay focused, and helps him see all the little details.
in parenthood, they both admit they're the best at the job they do. they swapped jobs. having phil be domineering and authoritative as a parent would go against his personality type. it's not the way phil does things. he's mostly the beat-around-the-bush, kill 'em with kindness type. he approaches a lot of things the same way. he doesn't jump straight at the problem and tackle it the way claire would. he politely nudges the problem with a smile.
but of course, at their worst, they BOTH have big parenting flaws. claire's authoritative approach makes the kids unwilling to be open with her. phil's sensitive approach makes for a doormat or an idiot at times. claire has a hard time actually listening to her kids' desires/wants, and phil has a hard time listening to his kids' needs (for discipline/boundaries).

It seems that Phil is the opposite of Bob's Burgers because at least with Bob Belcher he's aware of the fact that he's not really cool to begin with nor does he want to try to do that if it doesn't involve the restaurant. If anything Linda Belcher would be the one who always strives to be the "cool mom" whereas Bob Belcher is more of the sensible/realistic parent out of the two of them.

The reason why he can be the funny dad is because Claire does all the work in the parenting and if it was her thirsting after Gloria all the fans would have dragged because they already do lol. Really? Without Claire taking care of everything he behaves like just another kid. You can't count on him. That's the definition of a good father now?

Yeah, if only they did a whole video about how Claire is as a parent to show how she's positive as well, pointing out the ways they function together in raising a happy and healthy family...

Literally, always see a theme with the cool funny dad trope that they always weponize their incompetence. The reason he can be the cool dad is because Claire does 90%of the parenting and the few moments that he does people praise him which is great but go on shit on Claire for being stressed and not always cool like she didn't had to parent 4 children

What are you talking about? He was very reliable. Did you watch a different series?
He was waaaay more attentive to the kids emotions than Claire. She only interacted with them mostly to control them.
There's even an episode where Haley is afraid of being a mother and talking to Claire and she says something like "yeah but you had dad and he was born to be a dad"

Maybe because it's literally a recurring theme in the show on how Claire does most of the work with their children lol.
I love Phil but he's obviously a man child and there's nothing wrong being the "funny" dad but people love to infantilize him and forget that the reason he can be this way is because Claire did most of the parenting and the few moments he decided to act as a parents all people praise him acting like Claire is the bad cop

I disagree strongly with almost everything you said. Phil Dunphy is NOT a cool dad.
While I do agree with your point that it is important to pursue positive interests you enjoy, I think there are some things I think a man needs to be a good father. Such as religiosity, masculinity, control of emotions. Phil does not exhibit hardly enough of these traits throughout the series. I think the show makes it very clear through jokes and gags in many episodes that Claire is better under pressure and has more of the disciplinarian role. The problem is this is disgusting. A father needs to show correct discipline and instruction to his kids, not a good cop bad cop dynamic. Without a strong father as a result of disjunction with the mother will lead to weak sons and lost daughters. Without a father who is strong, disciplined, and seems to be in control of every situation he's in, the son will become a weak man. This will make the weak man unable to properly treat and be in control of his family and he will make the environment worse for everyone around him as he can not adequately deal with the hard situations he is put in that everyone automatically looks to the man to lead. The daughter will end up in disarray when knowing who to trust and what to admire and stay away from in a man. They will be left sad and hurt because their weak father did not present what to look for when looking for a future husband and did not show how a real man behaves and treats those around him. The argument you present that "The most important thing kids really want from their parents is to be there and make fun moments" may very well be true and this is necessary when raising children. Whoever, what the kid wants isn't always what the father needs to do. He should prioritize discipline and improving himself to the best he can be, so that he can raise his kids to be the best they can be. If they don't see him as fun because he cares more about their well being: Tough, what he says goes because he knows best. I want to make it very clear that I do not hate Phil Dunpy. I see him as a victim. When you break it down he is a good person, but he is being corrupted by modern society into twisting his morals into whatever is seen as acceptable in the modern day. I can think of two great examples of this. The first is the episode you mentioned where he learns Haley has been consummated, and he wants to confront her about it. Instead he takes the option to just imply that he doesn't really agree with it but "Oh just be safe, be careful." COWARD! You're telling me this "man" this "dad" is just going to watch his daughter become a whore. How can he sit at the dinner table and look across and see a man who is dating his daughter who he KNOWS does not love her enough to wait for a secure and happy marriage to give her the pleasure of possibly becoming a mother. No this man disregards the sanctity of reproduction and uses the act as pleasure. This is not love, this is pure lust and temptations of the flesh. The boyfriend should feel ashamed when looking at Phil's eyes knowing what heinous acts he has committed. Yet Phil would treat him as a friend. The second one is an episode where either Haley or Alex (I can't remember because they are both degenerates because their father is a degenerate) is going to college and the mom packs them protection. Obviously Phil objects to this as he should. But Claire completely belittles Phil's feelings by saying something like "Oh that amount would be nothing to me and my college boyfriend." Like OK?! Did you not realize the error of your ways when you met your husband who is the only man you want to spend the rest of your life with and wish you had when you were being promiscuous and going from one man to another just because it's part of the college experience? No, instead you indoctrinate your kids into this lifestyle that did not fulfill you. And you can tell she was not fulfilled either because her greed carries on to her next role as a mother. You can tell she was not satisfied with being a mother and wife because she feels the need to find fulfillment from a job once your kids are grown. Did not: raising a family, marrying a husband who loves you, a husband that provides for you, children who love you, sending sophisticated and respectable adults into the world, fulfill you enough? No it didn't because you failed as a mother and failed your children. That is why you find purpose in an office with papers instead of accomplishing raising a family. Claire Dunphy is not wife material. But she could be if she had a strong husband to enter into an equal relationship and understanding of one another to help guide and correct both of their behaviors. Phil Dunphy is an example of a man without religion or gospel to help him navigate life and better his wife and family. The title of the show "Modern Family" is alarming because the modern family is corrupted and tarnished by the woke ideology and false promises of the current society. All who read this who look to Modern Family as inspiration, STOP. Whatever is lacking from your family life will not be found here. Depart from this show and its propaganda and accept Catholicism.

The only thing I don’t like about him is how demeaning he is towards his wife. In the beginning he belittled her for being a housewife. He constantly talked about how hot Gloria was in front of her.
