- Today’s video is about our amazing stay at the Matsuzakaya Honten Ryokan and Onsen in Hakone, Japan. This is a traditional Japanese inn that serves a beautiful Kaiseki breakfast and dinner and offers a private Onsen experience in Hakone. If you are looking for the best private Onsen and traditional Kaiseki dinner experience in Japan, then I highly recommend this Ryokan in Hakone!
Thank you so much to Shibata who looked after us during our stay! She was very knowledgable about the menu and explained all the courses to us! We loved the traditional Japanese multi-course Kaiser menu! The whole team was very welcoming and knowledgable about the Ryokan’s history, best way to use an Onsen, and the best places to visit in Hakone!
***This ryokan serves Kaiseki breakfast and dinner which is a traditional Japanese multi course meal. I emailed Matsuzakaya Honten in advance to ask if they could adjust my Kaiseki menu to be vegetarian and they did which was amazing! Not all ryokans do this so always make sure to check in advance!

This one looks legit! Very upscale compared to where I went to. The one I went to was reasonably priced called Yuyado Yamanoshou 👍 The breakfast came in abundance and the quality exceeded our expectation 😊

I didn't make it to Hakone on my last trip this September, but I am making sure I will plan ahead and spend a day at a ryokan on my upcoming trip in April! It is just so hard to decide on an ryokan with an onsen that has a beautiful view! I also catch the little Final Fantasy Love Theme Remix in your onsen section!!! Can't wait to explore Hakone during sakura season!

Very helpful video. I am also looking at this Ryokan. Does the standard room come with the open private onsen? Or is that an upgraded room you have to book? Was the onsen bearable after adding cold water?
Hi, thank you for watching. I believe there are three upgraded room types with the open air private onsen, the other standard rooms don’t include it. The room we stayed in is called “Premium room with tatami area and open air bath B” (there is also the A option and a further “luxury room with open air bath” option). If you’re after a private onsen, definitely make sure to double check that it’s stated in the room title as the rooms vary a lot.
The onsen was definitely much more bearable after the addition of cold water. I don’t tolerate hot water temperatures at all so for me it needed to be quite a bit cooler. The cold water 100% worked! ❤️
The water for the onsen is local. If you ever take the ropeway tram up from lake Ashi you can see the steam rising up from the mountainside. It really smells like sulfur, can't miss it.
I stayed at the Hokone Pax Yoshino and had a similar Kaiseki dinner, it was amazing.

While in Koyasan, my tour group stayed at Ekion which is a Buddhist monastery. The dinner is all vegetarian as they do not eat any meat, so it would suit you fine...
Visiting the Kobo Daishi memorial/mausoleum is one walk you will always remember, amazing! Japanese culture at it's best...

Very nice video and description of your experience. as you said everything looked amazing. I also really liked the idea of a private Onsen so that my wife and I can enjoy the Onsen together. Your vlog had a very nice flow and you took the time to focus on different things so we could see the various scenery and amenities. I was wondering how much this Onsen costs since I've never been to Japan and want to try this when we go later this year. I've heard they can range in price from 15K to 20K yen, but I'm wondering if this is that range or much higher. I read through the various comments below, but didn't see any mention about the price. Appreciate your help since this is my first trip there. Thx, Ron
Hi Ron,
This particular onsen ryokan is quite a bit higher in the price range because of the private onsen in the room and the included kaiseki breakfast and dinner experience. I believe this exact room (Premium Room With Tatami Area and Open-Air Bath B on booking. Com) is around 95K yen per night for two people (change the currency to Yen if you use the website/app because I’ve noticed the UK/US rates are higher).
This rate fluctuates between dates/seasons. There are also other cheaper/more expensive rooms but this depends on whether you would want a private open air-onsen or if you would want a larger suite.
If you go for a cheaper room, you won’t get the private open-air onsen, but you would have access to the public open-air onsen downstairs. This is very much the kind of place you stay at all day and night (the whole thing is more of a relaxing getaway) as it has everything you need.
The rates do fluctuate so I would recommend keeping an eye on it on booking. Com (search Matsuzakaya Honten in Hakone). Also, if you do decide to book, I suggest booking it early as I have noticed that it’s frequently sold out.

Marianna, I really appreciate your reply and all the details you provided. We had various places we wanted to see in Hakone, so we might not have enough time to appreciate all that it offers. Yet, when you factor in all that they include, the price is reasonable. I loved listening to your video…very articulate and you have a nice soothing voice. Hopefully I’ll find some more videos of yours on other places in Japan. So many other videos are so bad; such a waste of time…unlike your terrific video.

Despite of Japanese, I'v never been to Hakone so The hakone is too expensive for sight seeing?. I'v been living in Kansai area.
I think Hakone is very popular with foreign tourists, we hear a lot about the hot springs so we are very eager to try! Kansai is also very beautiful however!!

I believe it all depends on what you want & do everywhere you go in this world ! There are always low ends to midium range to the high ends ! Lol. Hakone visits can be expensive, but there gotta be a way of doing it modestly ,too ! But, off course if you want the same level of hospitality & service experiences as Marianna & her mom did here in this video ,it won't be cheap at all for sure ! Lol. But, you'll be able to find something similar ,but more affordable ! But ,this place & the service / hospitality quality is something we all should experience once in a life time ! As you did, I used to go to HAKONE onsen with my mother several times when I visited back from my oversea's residence , but I have never been lucky to know this Ryokan to stay, wonder how you found it. It seams a splendid ryokan from any angle. HAKONE is the name of whole Eastern mountain-side of the national park, and there are more than a dozen of the areas which each has different nature of the minerals for medical effect. You might enjoy to learn the varieties of the kind of medical effects at the one area's onset to the other. Also, the small community of the onsen ryokan from the bottom of Hakone mountains to the top of the mountain, even around the Ashi-no-ko (Lake Ashi). Japan has more than 3,000 locations with Hot Spring, from Okinawa to Hokkaido. So, take advantage to enjoy them while living in Japan.

Normally the big full size toiletries are to only use while you stay there. The smaller ones and the little accessories like hair ties/hair brushes/toothpaste can all be taken home!🧴

It was a cute cottage hotel in the woods near a lake run by Prince hotel .Yes ,it's always chilly there ! Lol. You REALLY SCORED w/ THIS ONE !!!👍👍 The amenity goods & service were MIND BLOWING !!! Those tiny Japanese traditional basket bags !!!Damn cute / adorable ! I wonder if they allowed you & your mom to keep 'em !? 😍😍👍💖 How was the hair milk !?? Did it do the job !? I didn't think they'd prepare a vegetarian meal for you like that ! That's rare for a hotel to do that in the country side of Japan ,unless it is in Kyoto ! I AM SO ~JEALOUS !!! LOLLOLLOL Ma~n !! And you were so ~appreciative as usual !!! I always thank to the employees at hotels / ryokan ,too ,especially over there in Japan as the services they provide in Japan are out of this world outstanding !!! The 1st class services you get almost everywhere you go in Japan !!! I used to feel that the waiters didn't deserve tips at restaurants in the U.S.as I was so~used to the treatments/ hospitslity in Japan as I am Japanese !!! Sorry to say this ! But, I felt it was almost unjust that nobody gets tipped in Japan & people demand tips here ...felt like a joke ! To be very honest ! Lol. Oh ! At traditional Japanese restaurants & high end sukiyaki ,shabu shabu restaurants / nabe ryouri places ,the waitresses there lose their finger prints as they grab the hot woks/ pots w/ their bare hands so often !!! I used to frequent those places when I was a teenager & they showed me !!! 😱 It was VERY FREAKY !!! LOL.👍A great job you did ! I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING this one !!! THANK YOU !!!💜💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💖💖💖🍱🍾🥂🥢💕💞
