One can easily find tons of people covering this song, and plenty of interpretations of it. There are even quite a few (supposed) tutorials. But your detailed, step-by-step instruction, showing EVERY SINGLE fingering change is just fantastic. So many other tutorials just gloss over the right hand, as if we already knew how to do that part. As a beginner-to-intermediate guitar student, this was a perfect lesson. By putting your teaching alongside bits and pieces of other tablatures, I finally have this down. I still play it quite a lot slower than it is supposed to be played, but it is getting better and better. Finally, the whole song makes sense to me. Thanks a million!
Yep , exactly the same .Slow, but at long last it's right . I'm 9 months in and slowly learning that you get better and better without actually realising it ( self taught ) ( well , with TH-cam !) .
I’ve been watching this video for at least 8 years, mostly because I have long periods of not playing and forgetting specific transitions. But, every time I come back I’m blown away by your clean setup and multi camera approach. You are a fantastic teacher, no doubt, but also present your teachings in the best way imo! Thanks again!😊
Hello Carl, I’d like to say a big thank you for your tutorial videos on how to play fingerstyle Classical Gas. After 25 years of picking up a guitar, playing a bit and then putting it down again in frustration, I’ve finally learned how to play one complete piece of music, from start to finish. It has taken me almost a year to learn, but your patient break down of each piece and finger by finger instruction made it all possible. I cannot thank you enough. I had spent hours and more searching U-tube before I finally found someone who could teach a beginner of sorts like me how to play a piece of music I love. Gratefully yours Oliver
I’ve played a half-assed version of this since I was 16 years old. Now I am determined to learn it correctly, thanks to the great effort it took for you to work out every last note. Very grateful
Learning this to honor my father's love of music. Thank you so much for taking the time to go through this and film it. The three different views are super helpful. Just found you, we will see where I am in a couple of months.
Is there anything Carl Brown can't teach. No. I love this dude. As a teacher myself I used to figure out a lot of songs. Now I cheat and look for a Carl Brown video, lol. He's usually pretty darn accurate. Thanks Carl. Your ethic is appreciated.
Your amazing, I’ve been playing in bands for years, whenever I’m trying to make sure I’m playing a song the right way, I look to see if you did a video on it. Or when learning a new song. You are truly amazing. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you so much. I've been playing this song for over a year now thanks to your lessons, and I've progressed tremendously thanks to learning this song. You've done so much for me and I'll never forget your help and guidance that changed how I play the guitar. You really are an amazing person
Carl, thanks. I played as a kid but then didn’t touch a guitar for decades. Your lessons are brilliant. (Breaking it down, communicating, and camera angles). Classical gas is a huge challenge for me. With your help I hope to accomplish learning this timeless classic.
Carl, I found your lesson really helpful. I've been fiddling about for years trying to learn this one, but your lessons finally helped me to get it all together. It needs loads of practice to be fluent, but I'm slowly getting there, thanks to your lessons.
Now after not playing guitar for 30 years it is time to relearn this song. Thank heavens for the rewind on the mouse or TV remote as I am going to need them badly. I find most teachers go too fast. They need to repeat the sections over and over. There is a lot to this song.
Great tutorial. Many thanks for sharing. Took me about three weeks to learn it - and about three months to master it. Absolutely love playing this one. Thanks again!
Thank you again for this . Thanks for your calm patience, and for all the details clearly explained. I finally began working on this yesterday. I am now just past the 4 minute mark on this video. Goal : learn the song by the end of Summer. Peace
I just wanted to thank you good sir for making my dreams not just be dreams. I can now play this song and it took me about 6 months to get it down pretty well ( with inconsistent practice) but anyways its a legendary piece I am glad I took the time to work through.
Thank you for working with me ,I'm getting it down good, almost got part one whipped, part two soon.I find you very easy to follow. Thanks ,one more time, Michael Ross.
This tutorial was the bridge I needed to get better at fingerstyle when I was first starting out on the guitar. Thank you so much, you have no idea how much help these videos were to me. I'll be forever thankful towards you because of this. This may seem like an exaggeration, but it really isn't.
Once I get my guitar I will be watching this video over and over and over til I am able to play this song. I'm a total newbie to guitar but after watching this video I think I can do it.
Its actually not that easy, the way how he plays it is easy to learn but that’s not almost the half of the fascination of playin that riff with all the little structures and dynamics.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I mostly got it down in the time it took to watch through the 4 videos, but there are a couple things I've forgotten so I'll be watching through them again. After watching Mason Williams play this and watching through several tutorials on TH-cam, yours is the most accurate I've seen. There are little details that are easy to miss from Mason's performance unless you're an experienced guitarist, and you have captured those details. I think there are some minor inaccuracies, so I'll dig deeper to see if I can improve on them. Still, I'd say you are at least 95% accurate and I'm grateful that you have taken the time to record and upload these videos. You showed tremendous patience, as it's not easy to break down an entire piece of music for someone, one note at a time.
I've decided to relearn the guitar at age 61 because I can no longer watch the news. I hear that some of the best music came out of Britain during Thatcher's time in office. Something good has to come out of 2016, and the four years ahead. I'm not sure if this makes me an optimist or a pessimist, but please don't fault me a little jibe at our polítics.
@@Ice_Cream_Sandwich When learning at an older age, it is very different from having played for many, many years. Try teaching ballet to a 40 year old, as opposed to starting out at age 8 or so. It's really a whole different ball game.
Thanks Carl. I am so happy I found this lesson for Classical Gas. I have loved this song since I was a child in the 60's and I have always wanted to be able to play it. I have the intro down pat after 2 evenings playing around and doing it over and over watching what you're doing. I'm just a novice guitarist so I am very happy with myself. Thanks again.
I first found a love for this song back in the 60's, from a high school, great friend of mine. I always had a yearning to learn this, but the USMC wanted me to learn other things. Thank YOU CARL!!! I cant find Sam Leachouk(sp?)anywhere. Carl, YOUR teaching is 2nd to none!!
I'm still working on this song and can't play it mistake free yet, but I've gone ahead and posted a progress video on my channel to demonstrate the correct notes to the best of my ability from one take. I'm only playing it at about 90% speed as well to make it easier to hear the individual notes.
Matey - 10 years on , so you'll never see this I've been trying to get this intro right since Fred Flintstone's time , but it kept sounding wrong . Force of (wrong) habit . Repeatedly . Then, I watched your above vid and broke it down second by second . Forced my fingers to learn the correct way / not the easiest thing to do , after so long they seem to have a mind of their own . And , at last , it sounded right . So , a big THANK YOU wherever you are !
Your version is so easy to work on, the Tommy emmanuel video is a tornado of fingerpicking talent, you make things simpler and easier to learn the tune, the cgp Tommy is other worldly lol
Never forget what Mason wrote in his Mason Williams Guitar Pieces Book published about 1970 ( or there abouts ) to paraphrase ; " I think you'll find these pieces easier to play than you think , and definitely easier than they look . . . . . but it's the structure of the guitar thats doing most of the work " . He also mentions that he plays the five string banjo . Said in Guitar Player magazine that "Gas " was really Scruggs . . . "just played with a different attitude ."
I bought the single in the late 60's and still have it. Now i hope to learn finger picking although i could play a couple of chords when i was 9, from Bert Weedens "play in a day book", that was more than 50 years ago, never to late to try.
Wow great job. I'm a newbie and was extremely intimidated by this song. It now seems very reachable. Your style of explaining, your video with multiple camera angles, everything is too notch . Good job!
Thank you so much for this. You play beautifully and teach very clearly and (importantly) slowly and precisely. This piece would have been pretty much out of reach for me without your lessons. My fingers (and fingernails) take a constant beating playing steel string acoustic, so I have been wanting to get into playing some of the time on a nylon string. I have always loved and wanted to learn this piece. I am excited to practice and learn it on my new Takamine 2012c Limited Edition Classical acoustic-electric. In my opinion, if you could play only one song for someone, and you played just this song cleanly, many people would think you were the best guitarist they had ever heard.
Mick, Thanks for your comment. One thing I've been trying to focus on is getting one piece at a time down really well, as opposed to giving into the temptation of jumping around. It's a challenge sometimes because there is that 'kid in a candy store factor." But the fact remains, better to play one piece really well, than dozens of pieces (or bits and pieces of pieces) mediocre.
Wow! Always loved this Beautiful melodie! Small hands fat fingers ?? This might not be the first song a beginning guitarist should try out, But I’m Dam well going to try! (Shhh! Mario Capistran no it is fine, I admit it is not world class or amazing... but I can play a slower version and know where to put everything, not bad for 1 month

found this song because roger played it on american dad. And now my favorite guitar teacher on YT actually teaches it... SPLENDID !

One of the greatest guitar pieces ever made!
The best guitar teacher in the world!!! I always learn from you!
This video helped fill in some gaps left by the tab I found. Was very helpful and can finally play it now.
I've been trying to learn that main riff for so long and I've finally done it! Thank you so much!
Im almost done I made it to lesson 4 I just really need to polish it up you know. But it's like 90 something percent done. I'm so happy thank you

Fantastic lesson! And thanks for breaking it into 4 parts. It takes a while, but it is well worth it! Best teacher there is!
