We have to. Tourism has killed everything else except retail and office jobs. Love the Island to pieces, miss home, but can't make a living there. Chokehold Wightlink and Red Funnel have on travel is financially not viable, wasn't years ago definitely isn't now. Forget education - make the economy viable to support the population

So, they mentioned in this video that some of the "less motivated" students are becoming mechanics. Answer me this question. What is wrong with wanting to fix things (my dad and brother are Millwrights and I am a teacher, full disclosure). The people who go to university are designing these big, beautiful machines that make it better for humanity. So, who is going to build them and fix them when they break? Such elitist thinking that everyone has to go to university. Every vocation is important.

@dormantsuperhero No, I loved the Island but I have a Thai wife, so when I retired, we moved to Thailand! We now live in luxury on my government pension in a large 3 bedroom house with a big garden! We employ a cleaner and a guy to help with the garden! Try doing that in England on a government pension!!

As an introvert, I absolutely love the island but as much as I hate to admit it there are no universities here. If I want to go to uni, It will be a real struggle. At this point in time I’m looking at Southampton University because i can’t afford to go further away from home. It’s a real shame that there isn’t more opportunities for young people living on the island.

Good debate but please CH4 define success" does that mean being exploited by a massive faceless corporation for a huge annual salary being told what to say and do by the man or woman above you? Becoming a millionaire not paying any taxation and not contributing to society? Finding a place at university for a 3 year under grad course where you'll never pay off the interest? Securing a regular paying job on zero hours? Or just surviving from day to day and not taking your own life? Please define success.

Small is beautiful, as the saying goes. I think I would be really happy living on a small island like this than I would be living in a huge city or in a large town.
Don't people feel safer and much happier living in small communities, where you tend to know each other, and look out for each other, rather than living in a built-up area or on a large estate, where you hardly know anyone?
Every vocation is important - no matter what skills or qualifications you may or may not have. University is not the only answer to succeed or have a successful future. If you have not got the skill or qualification you need to pursue an interest, or find it difficult to learn, invest in a textbook to help learn the skills you need to proceed at a pace to suit you. You only need the basic life skills of reading, writing and knowing your tables to understand the basics and, as your knowledge builds, you can learn more and more.

It seems that all the things ordinary people need to live life are and have been deliberately underfunded. The NHS has been deliberately underfunded, education, amenities such as libraries are deliberately underfunded. Then you have a lack of opportunities which government can only provide so far. Having said that it is important that those living in smaller communities see opportunities to remain and contribute so that they have the ability to have good life themselves. In that respect government should encourage strong communities and support them wherever possible instead of trying to break them up

The education has always been second class to that on the mainland. I was born & raised on then island. My first school after kindergarten was the Oakfield Boys School where i was doing quite well. I was then told I had to attend RSM (Ryde Secondary Modern) which where there were both boys & girls. It was right across the road from our family home. That is when my education began to fail. Yes, I know there was a war on at the time, but it should not have affected my education. I did not do well because the teachers were not teaching. The French teacher could not maintain discipline, & in my honest opinion was totally incompetent. My class teacher simply had no time for me as an individual. I cannot recall how she treated other boys in the class. She often would frequently ridicule me in front of the whole class if I failed to complete my homework. As a result, I left school at the age of 14 & took up an apprenticeship in the automotive trade. I enlisted for a 5 year stint in the RAF at 18 where I completed my education. On leaving tune RAF, I spent a few short years in UK prior to emigrating to Canada where I have lived ever since. I’ve done well for myself & my family becoming quite wealthy.
I was eventually hired by a major U.S. corporation to be their service representative in western Canada & when that company sold the product line I represented, I was hired by another highly respected U.S. Corporation to do an identical job for them.
BTW, those who look down on tradesmen should think twice. I know of many highly educated individuals, especially some from England who are working way below their educational qualifications for minimum wage even. University education is not the be-all & end-all it is said to be. At the age of 90 years, I now live in an up-scale gated community where there are a number of retired teachers. Some of whom, like me, originated from the UK. Not one of them are as wealthy as me, but maybe they spent heir money foolishly.
But, quite simply, I have never forgiven those who were, or should have been responsible for my basic education. Who knows what I might have been had i received the training we all deserve by competent teachers.
