I'll get one thing out of the way as someone who was there at the arcade scene in 1991 Fatal Fury was absolutely huge, not as much as Street Fighter 2 but it was really talked about, written about and played like crazy.
Extremely popular title for the time.
In the North East US, Samurai Shodown was really popular too even against all the SF2 revisions of the time.
It's interesting to see the predecessor of the King of Fighters. To be honest, KoF was initially the merge of Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, and became its own thing afterwards.
It was always just a crossover of snk's ips in a fighting game
I remember when I first saw fatal fury at an arcade the machine was not marked so I asked what game it was and one of the kids watching said "Street fighter 3"
Geese Howard was really tough but I love this game
Any time an npc is allowed to counter, it makes it too easy to think it is cheating.
You had to jump at him, he would try to counter, after that you could grab and throw him.

At the time, I preferred SNK fighting games over everything else. I wish I could go back to those times and relive the release of new fighting games in the arcades!
The SNK cabinet’s were awesome because they had like 4-5 games in it.
How did I not notice this being the first time I have seen you cover Fatal in it's own video? This is hands down my favorite fighting game to this day
I’ve always had a real soft spot for the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters games.
The local arcade to me in the 90’s at Meadowhall in Sheffield used to regularly have Japanese exchange students who came to the arcade.
They used to stay away from Street Fighter and play Fatal Fury and KOF and the entire arcade would crowd round and watch them play. Seriously they were levels above any of us on these games!
An absolute joy to watch and seemed to just make the games flow.
I remember playing Fatal Fury at the Golden Dome arcade. I loved the music for the stages. Especially Geese Howard final boss stage. Getting kicked off the roof shocked me at the time lol

SNK's fighting games have always been much more challenging than Capcom's. There's even something called "SNK Boss Syndrome".
Also, if I remember correctly the concept of ex moves was invented by SNK and later adopted by other companies.
Taunts started first with Snk as well.

Taunts, ex moves, super moves, hidden special deadly moves, special wins against opponents, first implementation of a pseudo 3D, actually facial gashes and wounds, etc. so many things have been pioneered by SNK at the time that other fighting games including the SF alpha series adapted. Loved SNK at the time and still do now. can't wait for Garou 2 city of wolves
@paloddinkhanhueso3432 You mean Capcom invented everything. Capcom was the main reason SNK made fighting games.
Over the years I've come to appreciate SNK more and more having been a big Capcom fan since the early 90s.
Once i've discovered SNK, Crapcom was completely wiped out from my mind, and I Thank God for that.

I will admit I do like Street Fighter more then Fatal fury but I do like Fatal fury alot and is my second favorite fighting franchise hands down.
I wonder why no one ever talks about street smart and how takuma was basically the first snk fighting game character as far as the kof series.

You could easily do a deep dive on South Town itself, the location for the first Fatal Fury, much of Artvif Fighting, and at least one of the King of Fighters games.
I used to play Fatal Fury every so often when the 6 Street Fighter 2 machines at my local arcade were packed and I couldn't get on them without having to challenge someone.
This video really shows how important it is for a game to have strong characters. Fatal Fury literally looks fresher, more vibrant and has some exciting gameplay elements. Yet the characters (while still great of course) really paled in comparison to that of Street Fighter 2’s roster. Which is also a reason why everyone remembers Street Fighter 2, but rarely talk about Street Fighter. Capcom really struck gold with the likes of Chun-Li, Zangied, Sagat and the rest of those brawlers
Visually, I prefer how Street Fighter II had a gentler look to the backgrounds, so that the fighter didn't blend in as much.

Between what I liked , capcom, midway now netherrealm, and snk, snk is the only one that still hasn't strayed from it's roots too much. The others I don't recognize anymore
I'm so glad you mentioned "Street Fighter '89". I'm still trying to figure out how Street Fighter 2010 factors into the historical timeline. It was clearly before Capcom learned to only use Street Fighter branding on fighters.
I lived and breathed the arcades in the late 80s through the 90s. Played and enjoyed both franchises equally.

SNK got me into taking fighting games more seriously(instead of mashing buttons or limiting my selection of fighters.)
Fatal fury king of fighters shatters my expectations with Spectacular graphics and gameplay
Fatal Fury does really feel like Street Fighter II half-brother. In some aspects the first game feels more like a beat 'em up since you only have 3 playable characters against CPU-only ones. The imputs for the special moves and the hit-boxes are kind of wonky, but I guess the developers didn't have any type of reference, after Street Fighter II's success SNK made some serious improvements with Fatal Fury 2
If I had to choose my favourite FF game, that would have to be Mark or the Wolves, but MoW made so many changes to the FF formula that it feels like a game from a completely different series, though it still has a ton of elements from past games. The Real Bout games are also pretty fun, though sometimes it can be difficult to pull out the Super Moves
I hope Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves can bring back some characters from the first seven Fatal Fury games, alongside the Mark of the Wolves cast and some new characters as well

Fatal Fury DNA is tied to Street Fighter,the same way Virtua Fighter DNA is tied to Tekken.
If weren't for Fatal Fury making waves in its own right, I doubt Art of Fighting and KOF would existed.
Unlike Street Fighter I & II,
Fatal Fury 1 & 2 has plots that actually make complete sense.
To the point where everytime Street Fighter has an adaptation (manga, movie, series, etc.), Capcom never uses the plots from the games.

All this and you failed to mention that that man who punches through the brick wall in Street Fighter 1's attract screen was a scrapped protagonist who Nishiyama later developed into Terry Bogard.
I'm glad the real Street Fighter II is not like this cause in both Street Fighter 1 and Fatal Fury 1, you could only play as the good guys and not the bad guys. Some of the bad guys seems much cooler. In Street Fighter 2 at least you could play as the bad guys in the many updated versions.

Yeah it's done way before Street Fighter Alpha series did but 2-in-1 in Fatal Fury is just both players beating the CPU so they could fight each other next.

KOF and Darkstalkers were better games than SF and MK. They know how to do fan services. They were the DOA franchises of the old days.
Darkstalkers is way more fluid, well-drawn, and addictive than Street Fighter.
KoF though... Great series! Until SNK messed up the anthology by releasing KoF 2003, they should've started with the Maximum Impact Saga first and then the Tales of Ash Saga way later on.

street fighter 2 has better game feel than fatal fury for me. and i hate the changing plane.
The changing plane was invented to prevent projectile spamming. Also in some stage it could be used as a stage hazard move such as Laurence and Axel stage.

Garou: MoTW is one my favorite fighting games of all time.
It was invented so people wouldn't be able to spam projectiles every time and to give non-projectile fighters a chance to strike.

I will be honest, I do not consider sf2 a sequel, sf1 was that bad. sf1 had bad animation, bad graphics, bad sound, horrible control, bad multiplayer. It was ground work at best for what we see in sf2. And while fatal fury may have been conceived by the same creator, there is so much that goes into the gameplay, art, music, balance that it is far far from a one man show. Both games shot for the same moon with different crews and fatal fury 1 fell short.
