      Look up his episode of 'Live at Daryl's House'. I believe it's the only episode that wasn't filmed at Daryl's........but over in Hawaii.....at Todd's house. They're all out on the guy's patio, with some nice scenery in the background.

      In his living room. He got all the studio equipment and set up his own studio so he could do whatever he wanted without record company interference. His acapela record proves the guy is a genius.

    My 1st ex-husband sent this to me on a cassette about 5 years after our divorce. 19 years later I found it, sent him a note and we remarried a year after that. 24 years after we divorced.

    I grew up with song, as a little 17 year old hippie. I never get tired of it. For me it's just a beautiful way to express living and loving in the early 1970's.

      I am the same as you. This song describes beautiful friendships and lovers during that special time. Strangely, a lot of us KNEW that we were experiencing a magical time with amazing music that was never to me made like that again.

      And Steven didn't know. I read one account where she noticed how much they looked alike, and another version where Steven met her and thought she looked just like his other daughter and that made him ask the mother. Don't know which one is true.

I've been to two of his shows, SF & Austin, and there are nothing but people just like me there. In '75 I played his "Initiation" LP until you could see through it. This song is my get-out-of-depression-free card. God I love the major seventh chord.

      Incredible list of production credits, ALL yielding excellent results for each band. "Forever Now", by the Psychedelic Furs? "We're an American Band", by Grand Funk? "Along the Red Ledge" by Hall and Oates? XTC, Meat Loaf, as you noted, so many others. And he does it, for the cash, so he can make his own music the way he wants to. This is one smart dude.

    You are listening to the cream of the crop when it comes to songwriting. It brings such joy to see the look on your face when you are exposed to these awesome songs of my youth. Every college should have this as an assignment for a music appreciation class. Appreciating this music is what it is all about. More younger people should really listen to yesterday's music.

    This is a great song. He made his own music for years but he really made more of a name for himself as a producer/collaborator. He was in very high demand for many years. He's a really interesting guy.

    The verse "Maybe I shouldn't think of you as mine' was prophetic. He finds out later that the daughter he raised was actually fathered by Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, actress Liv Tyler. However, they all remain friends and Liv calls both of them dad.

      Meat Loaf couldn't get anyone interested in the Bat out of Hell songs, until he and Steinman played their demo for Rundgren. He saw the potential and agreed to produce it, and the rest is history.

    Another stone classic. Todd Rundgren is one of the most talented musician/songwriters/producers the pop/rock world has ever known. When you get a chance look into his body of work, it's incredible.

      Yes, Liv's mother is Bebe Buell, who became involved briefly with Steven Tyler while she and Todd were together. Liv's last name was Rundgren at birth. I always thought he wrote this song for Bebe.

    Thank you for playing and talking about such an important and beautiful song from my childhood. At the time, it gave me great hope for a life that lay ahead.
    Wasn't long until I learned the words from Gladys that "I'd rather live in his world than without him in mine".
    Love doesn't come for everyone in their life. And now I know it is very true, that "your nobody until somebody loves you".
    The old music brings back.memories, sights, smells and the pain. Wouldn't have it any other way.

    Todd produced "Baby Blue" for Badfinger & "The Locomotion" cover by Grand Funk Railroad (he's singing with them).
    Also one of the ladies singing back up was Vickie Sue Robinson who about 4 years later had a disco/dance hit "Turn The Beat Around".

    Just saw him 7/24 in Laughlin, NV for the first time. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of concerts I have seen...country to heavy metal..this was EASILY one of my top ten. Playrd two and half hours...simply phenomenal talent, lyrics, and his band is world class...so damn good...man I missed out not seeing before now...still stunned, as was my wife.

    Todd wrote this song after a High School girlfriend was forced to break up with him because her dad did not like his long hair. It was not him wanting to leave her, it was him going through the pain of an unfinished love affair.. He explained this in an interview long after it was released.
