I would like to construct a rapid transit themed layout that combines subway, el and open cut running, as well as some freight switching. Grades and accessibility are the biggest head scratchers in creating a balance between reliability/practicality and scenic impact. Lots of great food for thought just in this corner of your layout. Cheers.
Nice job on the model. It's an accurate depiction - only difference being the 3rd rail omission. Also, the tunnel lights are typically mounted on the tunnel walls. I work for the TA and have walked the subway tunnels on numerous occasions with a front row view to the details. Fun Fact: The recesses in the walls are referred to as "niches"; "manholes" are structures used to house/access cable runs/equipment. Hope to see some of the kits in N scale!
There were other differences as well; there wasn't any catwalks on the side walls like there usually would be, and the niches were rounded, instead of squared, as they mostly are in the NYC subway tunnels. This DID, however, look like an accurate representation of the LIRR Atlantic Avenue tunnel from the Flatbush Terminal to the Bedford Avenue portal; no catwalks on the side walls which, incidentally, have rounded niches.
Very nice attention to detail. Very realistic. I’ve been modeling the DC subway using 3D printed models, though I’ve probably gone overboard in the overall scope.
Grew up in Philadelphia and have fond memories of the trolley and subway/Elevated lines sharing the same tunnel with the trolleys on the outer tracks. Love how real it looks! Great Job.👍
I truly appreciate you sharing your creativity, design flow, tools and techniques and the results. What you share has improved my modeling! You have a sweet layout and your products are amazing.
As a retired Motorman for the TA that looks great, I got a little nervous when I saw the finished effort, was expecting a bunch of kids running along the tracks. Just one the alcove should have been painted yellow safety yellow and weathered dirty
I want to model something similar too. So cool to see the underside of a layout modeled. You do have room to extend that out from the facia maybe 12 to 18 inches and create a little platform with stairs to the street above. Such a neat addition to your layout Doug. Helps me to get inspired even more. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Rob
This is what I wanted!!! I want to design one that is underneath the fascia and I was thinking of doing Helix to bring up basically what would be two levels out of a tunnel and then be an elevated rail system, that crept out of the tunnel on a slight incline. Then I started thinking why deal with the Helix when I could just make the topography change. So now I'm thinking more along the lines of on one side of the layout, there will be a visible subway station, or two... And then disappear back into the fascia and gradually do a climb and come out the same slightly inclined tunnel but on an area of the layout where the street level is much much lower
Great representation of the real thing regarding the NYC subways! You have a special talent for all you do in the model railroading hobby in general! That's obvious! My models(mth subway sets, and a Premier AC4400CW Southern Pacific, Diesel) are O Gauge. There're a couple NY Subway modelers in the web, like Joseph Frank, that is fantastic! Also a guy that has a channel called Artist Layout that models an underground subway station and tunnels very realistically! But Your work is exceptional also! I'll be on the lookout for your elevated subway build video! Congrats, RR.-
Thanks again Doug, for another great video! As always great detailed work! (I would have used warm white LEDs, or simply coat the cool white LEDs , with an Amber marker. That will have a vintage incandescent effect, but that's me). All your train modeling , is really great!
You can get mirrors made of acrylic glass, might be easier to deal with than glass. Some companies will even send out sample packs. You could cap the front of the tunnel with an inward facing one-way mirror as well. Fun project, looks great!
Yeah I was looking for the third rail, spacing between the ties, and lights on walls which is prototypical. Would suggest adding lights to the car. Nice job overall
Doug nice project and I appreciate how you took us through it step by step. You made it look simple but there's a little bit to the CAD drawing and of course the equipment to do the laser cutting. Everything looks good and you can always add that third rail later. I've been a fan of those wire brackets since I first saw you use them in a past video. Any chance you could make for O scale? Cheers!
When is the kit coming out? I would also like to see a kit with one side open for viewing. The floor and ceiling construction is perfect. ideally I like to build a 3 foot diarama that could go under my shelf layout or sit on a shelf.
nice work, well done no clue how good it would be visible but why not power the tracks and put some light into the subway car? without the mirror a flickering light in the tunnel would also be a good idea.
NYC subway doesn't have rocks in the tracks when indoors. It's usually 2 rails on top of half a railroad tie each. Which is embedded in the concrete floor.
If anyone has ever ridden the LIRR from Flatbush Terminal to at least Nostrand Avenue would note that this tunnel appears to represent what exists under Atlantic Avenue than anywhere else....
It DID exist along several subterranean lines; the IRT's 6 express thru the Bronx until the portal between Hunt's Point and Whitlock avenues was ALL ballasted track until just recently....
Dude, when you did the reveal, I was floored. I also think the lights work in the middle with theoverstated subtlety. Amazing!
Awesome detail - reminds me of riding the A train every day to Brooklyn Tech from Queens! Glad to see the garbage and that you might be adding rats :)

What a great idea to introduce a subway like that. Very nice realism portraying it as well.
Would you have a link to the terminal you are using for your LED? Never saw it before.
It's from Miller Engineering : microstru.com/collections/o-ho-billboards/products/4805-power-distribution-board
I grew up in Boston, so I spent a lot of time on the subway. I am thinking about a network of PCC cars on my layout. Nice job, I love it.
Thx!

Doug, looks amazing, it has certainly captured the feel of the subway.
Thank you for sharing your journey, cheers, and stay safe, Michael
Thx Michael

Better make a kit out of those laser cut parts, rapido is coming out with some nice subway cars.
That is a damned cool diarama bud. Nice work
This is a great idea. Thanks for showing us
Wow! It looks amazing! I love seeing the behind the scenes of this construction. Thank you!
Thank you !
I truly appreciate you sharing your creativity, design flow, tools and techniques and the results. What you share has improved my modeling! You have a sweet layout and your products are amazing.
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching.
Nicely done! Wow! All it's missing is miniature rats 😅
adding rats shortly...
As a retired Motorman for the TA that looks great, I got a little nervous when I saw the finished effort, was expecting a bunch of kids running along the tracks. Just one the alcove should have been painted yellow safety yellow and weathered dirty
Next one, yellow alcoves...for some reason I remembered them the same as tunnel walls, but makes sense.

Thx Rob...yeah, I keep eyeing some more space to extend it somehow
Looks fantastic! Another great video! Thanks Doug.
Thank you!
Great video Doug! Always amazing and inspiring to see what you create. A work of art! Thanks for sharing!
Thx Ron!
As a ex NYC subway rider, you’ve done a very good job.
Refuge. I love it.
Spettacolo,bravo Doug🚂👏👏
this is great nice one, best wishes from the uk.............................jpj
What a great idea! Seeing that Rapido is making a Toronto Subway train...
Holy shit that looks real.
Thx, close enough anyway!
@@FosScaleModelsDespite the noticeable inaccuracies, the methods explained here are pretty damn "idiot-proof"!

Sound ambitious , go for it. Thanks for watching
Very very nice!!!
All looks absolutely cool
Hay Doug really enjoyed your process of planning and executing. Master at work😊

Congrats,

That looks amazing!! This gives me an idea for an automotive tunnel.
Thanks!
Great work!
These are some great tips, I'll probably add a metro to my layout (If I can find O scale CTA cars). Thanks for the tutorial!
Another great video!! Fantastic work Doug.
That looks great i think. And only took you 24 minutes lol...thanks for another great video
Freaking amazing.
very cool. very, very cool.
It looks great. Keep up the awesome content.
Wow ❤❤❤❤❤awesome 😊
Really enjoying your videos Doug. Thanks
Glad you enjoy them, thanks for watching
Great video. Glad you share where you get some of your materials.
Thanks again Doug, for another great video!
As always great detailed work!

All your train modeling , is really great!
I thought so too...always more of a yellow glow down there; back then anyway
Great addition to your layout
Wow! Very nice 👍
Very nice!
I did a similar Subway underneath my layout which actual travels under my top layout…
Nice! Not enough subway modeling out there
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Was thinking same, one way mirror for sure. Will look into it.
another great video!
Yeah I was looking for the third rail, spacing between the ties, and lights on walls which is prototypical. Would suggest adding lights to the car. Nice job overall
Yup I think a permanent car w lights should be next.
I was looking for the niches to be located in the center wall, and SQUARED instead of rounded, plus the jack arch walls with catwalks....
Excellent

I'll put it on the O Scale list - glad you enjoyed the video.
Your East Coast vibe is through and through...

Clever idea......if it's dark methinks you don't need a mirror...

Thank you Tug for another grate video
By way I also use Bobbi Brown products theyare good stuff. Great informayshen
A "grate" video?! *Information.
@user-dj7wv5ok2x Thank you Mr spelcheker
Very very realistic!! Now all you have to do is piss in the corner of the room to get the full effect and smell of a New York City subway tunnel.😂😅
Fantastic, I like the mirror at the end! Did you think about putting it at an angle?
Any plans on making your models in N scale sometime in the future?
Not at the moment, but always a possibility if time permits.
hello Fos Scale Models-Model & it's is Randy and i like yours video is cool & Thanks & Fos Scale Models-Model & Friends Randy

what happened to your website?
Small glitch, back up and running
Nice work….looks good, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen subway using ballast. Anyone?
It DID exist along several subterranean lines; the IRT's 6 express thru the Bronx until the portal between Hunt's Point and Whitlock avenues was ALL ballasted track until just recently....
That's awesome work, i love the end result.....
