Dad when family comes over.

  • When we have family over, we try not to treat my dad any differently than anyone else. This is a pretty good example of what it’s like during a family function, or get together. Mark uses humor and my sister, tries to answer his questions as best she can. Josh deals with him in a very similar way to Mark. Sometimes you just have to make light of the situation to get through it.

Sis has a good demeanor with Ed. She talks close to him, looks at him, speaks slowly and clearly - in short sentences and she's sweet in her tone. You can see she taught for years.

As far as your dad not having a great day is subjective. To us, especially to the ones who lives or lived with loved ones with dementia or who sees his interactions, sees this as a good day. He didn’t go off to his bedroom or wanting to leave the area with people. Our dad would isolate himself either in his bedroom or in the garage (we’d go out with him). He was highly agitated, would punch or hit mostly things but also us. All I can say is to all of the dementia family caretakers, cherish the good times. Even when you have to answer the same questions repeatedly! Love them for who they are to you and who they were before dementia. Tell them you love them because before you know it, they’ll be gone. Then you’ll wish for just one more minute to see them again. Ok, I’m done…as I’m crying.

Wow Dan, I hope you and your brothers and sisters thank God every day for giving your parents such long lives and that they can still be a part of your daily lives. Sure, maybe dad is not 100% all there anymore but at least he is still around which is way more than what many others can say who have no father or mother anymore. In my case I thank God I have my mom relatively healthy at 81 years old and my dad is still around somewhere in Southern California as well whereas many of my high school friends have already lost both of their parents. Those of us that are in our 50's and 60's and still have mom and dad around are few of the lucky ones and should thank God everyday for blessing them with long lives.

Dad has generations before him, and he looks to be overwhelmed, yet so elated. I like the question that Mark posed to Dad, referencing if he would like to choose another family other than the one he has, and Dad so candidly answered no, not at all!
Such a wise man, who doesn't let his illness determine whether or not he can still give logical and concise responses to even the most important questions when asked his opinion.
The moments you all share together are precious and priceless. #CHERISH
Let nothing interrupt these last days.❤

Our dad had Alzheimer’s. All three of his sisters had Alzheimer’s. It was very difficult at times. In May 2024, it’ll be 4 years since he passed away. There are three of his kids, all in their 60’s now and we wonder which is or will it be all of us that will suffer from this terrible disease. Mom is almost 86 and her memory is pretty good. I pray she passes away while sleeping and awakens in heaven.

It seemed like Pops was in a good mood to me? The only struggle i see is that you were all so close together having different conversations and i can imagine it was harder than normal for Ed to hear. It would be hard for me too and i don't have dementia. When he and Sis went over to the couch talking it was a little easier on him. Thanks for sharing with us!!! 🥰🥰🥰 We love you Pops!!!! 💖💖💖
