Season 3 is absolutely my favorite season! I'm excited to watch it with you! Just a quick note: not everyone gets why Colin came back all rakish this year. It's because he spent the first two seasons being either taken advantage of (by Marina, Jack Featherington, etc) or mocked (mostly by his family) for his sweet, romantic, naive, excitable nature. So he put on armor, in this rake persona. And the fact that he is validated for it only adds to his emptiness (see his response to Anthony congratulating him on his new admirers in the first episode), proving to him that who he really is wasn't good enough, and people only want this fake version. No spoilers, but he and Penelope are actually on very similar journeys this season... learning that who they are is worthy of love, including the parts of themselves that society doesn't accept. It's absolutely beautiful! I honestly can't imagine any future season topping it for me!

@@rbrainsop1 yeah I think there’s a scene with Colin and Violet explaining this armour he’s put on and now I understand why, but he’s slowly coming back to his kind roots and it’s great to see. I love how this show has been exploring him this season

Finally! Someone noticed that Debling didn't actually do anything to save Penelope from the balloon's basket, but in fact went behind her. So he both prevents her from getting further away from the danger and as you point out he'd cause her to be squished between him and the basket. Plus the fact he legged it out of there with no thought for her safety until she cried out after tripping and falling.
It was Colin who really did save her by both taking action himself and enlisting others to help as well.
Plus Debling also makes it clear he's doing everything he can to get by away from his family for 3 years whilst leaving his new/prespective wife keeping house (house keeper) with this same family around without him being there to intervene. How bad are his family if he wants to get away from them for 3 years at a time. I don't completely dislike him but there's too much we don't know about him and his family and circumstances.

Debling is a (very) polite, honest, good man who clearly valued Penelope for herself. Actually, if the balloon had crashed into him, it at the very least would have slowed down or even changed direction while the brunt of any impact would have been felt by Debling, which frankly could have proved fatal. He was seeking to shield Penelope as much as he could, at a great deal of personal risk to himself. More, he did this instantly, the second he saw she was in imminent danger. This tells you a lot about the man, all of it much more than good.
Had he room in his heart to genuinely love her, then Colin might have had a real rival for her affections, and we'd have a very different season. As it happens, I ended the season hoping him the very best. I love the notion that he meets someone abroad and brings his new wife back to London, whereupon Lord and Lady Debling are delighted to see Colin and Penelope Bridgerton, especially the former who sincerely hoped she would find what she was looking for. And will no doubt be very happy she did.

@@DavidMacDowellBlue the whole point is though that the basket would not have come into contact with Debling first. In all the scenes, and I watched them multiple times to check, there was the basket, then Penelope, and then Lord Debling behind her. The basket would come into contact with Penelope first, not Debling. So if anyone would have had a fatal injury it would have been Penelope, if Colin and the guys he enlisted hadn't ultimately kept the basket from coming into contact with Penelope. So I honestly b do not see what massive personal risk he was taking. What injuries would he have had when Penelope was between him and the basket.
      🧑🏻‍💼🎈 👩🏻‍🦰 🧔🏼‍♂️
Positions of Colin, Penelope and Debling in comparison to the position of the balloon and it's basket.
Please understand I don't hate Debling, and my first impression of him was very good and it never completely deteriorated, but I did become a little more concerned by what we don't know about him. I do think he was polite and valued Penelope's forthrightness, honesty and the fact she is her own person. I like the fact he's willing to face ridicule not just for his own choices but by choosing to spend time with her and court seriously, by dancing with and calling on her with a serious intention of proposing to her when society has largely cast her out. Plus his parting conversation of wishing she would get what she was hoping for was something I did respect about him. However, for me there was still not enough about him to make me not somewhat concerned for what we didn't know about him. My honest thoughts were that he would do better to simply hire a housekeeper, like Mrs Fairfax, as Mr Rochester does in Jane Eyre until, and if, he develops serious intentions to settle down at home. Or if he's looking for a wife, someone more like Charlotte Lucas from Pride and Prejudice who is not not romantic, and simply wants to keep house, would suit him better.

@@Loulizabeth I do not dispute this might have been exactly what would have happened.
But I absolutely disagree this was because he was planning on that result. Debling was trying to save Penelope, and his method showed he didn't really know enough about these situations to get it right. So his intention is what matters. I think it clear he ran back to help Penelope get up but by the time he got there he could see that was impossible so he tried something else--something that would not have worked. But he had less than one second to make a decision, and the option of fleeing out of harm's way was NOT that choice. Rather he tried to save this young woman, seemingly putting himself in danger.
This frankly seems to me the point--what kind of man is Lord Debling? The sort who would try to save Penelope by shielding her with his body. The fact he didn't know how to do that properly is not on him.

    • @Loulizabeth
      @Loulizabeth หลายเดือนก่อน

@@DavidMacDowellBlue I actually wonder if the main issue here is that of cinematography, which actually caused the issue. If that situation had happened in real life I do actually think Lord Debling would in fact have positioned himself between the balloons basket and Penelope, especially given their previous conversations. The problem is that a realistic shot of Debling sliding in front of Penelope with his back to the camera doesn't make a great scene though it would be what was needed for actually saving her. Equally we are only given enough information about Debling in relation to other characters to show how other characters would relate or not with him. I'm sure if he'd been a more central long term, his character and family would have been more known about and talked of. So yes I do get that Debling is in fact a good guy who does admire and respect Penelope and I think in real life they would like be good friends. The need for a good scene and his lack of being in the show long-term , resulting in lack of backstory is what bothered me the most. In fact if he was to come back once Colin and Penelope are married I could even see Colin and Debling bond over their shared love of travel.

14:54 You see, this is one reason these two are so suited to each other. They both have this dark, biting, but ultimately not cruel sense of humor. Personally I love how these first two episodes see Colin's emotional perception of Pen as "sister" is being eroded, even whittled away bit by bit.
15:49 Seems the actor playing Albion's theory was that he was waiting for Phillipa's consent to go further. He was waiting for an invitation to third base from someone who had no idea third base even exists! Honestly that is on Portia.
17:16 Okay, we know Cressida didn't tell (and btw nice character development) but Colin doesn't know that. And he is right the source of this bit of gossip was Eloise, albeit accidentally. Because she was very, very, very careless about someone else's life. As usual. Love her but she needs to grow up.
17:32 Poor Francesca--probably the one young lady in the Ton who least would want to be a Diamond!!!!!
    21:08 YES!!!!!!
26:28 Sorry, rant coming. If in fact his name is "Lord Marcus Anderson" that means he is the son of a Duke or Marquess, and he is either a younger son or his father is still living. But then this show is wildly historically inaccurate about soooooo much. No way anyone could "will" someone else a title for example, that sort of thing was a matter of rigid laws. You can will people property, but you cannot will anyone a title. And the title always goes through the male line, so there is now way any of Lady Featherington's daughters could produce the new Lord Featherington UNLESS they married the current Lord Featherington. But...yeah the show is full of stuff like that. And I am being picky.
27:02 Now an anti-rant. I so adore seeing these dances! I've attended some costume balls where we learned period dances like this and they are sooooo much fun as well as being so very beautiful!
