I attend a church that has altar calls. I had never experienced an altar call until I arrived at this church. I was a widower raising teenagers and was struggling with life. I found that it wasn’t only for calling to convert non believers but allowed anyone to pray for special needs. I found people gathering around me and praying with me. It felt honest and pure. I started praying with and for them as well. It felt like family. I never felt that in the church I grew up in America I wrong for feeling that way?
Altar calls are not particularly mentioned in Scripture nor are they prohibited, either. To me, the big problem is follow up. Many may come forward and are ‘counseled’ briefly but not continuously. In effect, make the decision and follow up by attending more services, rather than continuing to call on and visit the the person.
