You should be aware that mandarin used in Taiwan is different from Mandarin elsewhere. The Taiwanese dialect is intermixed with English, Japanese, and vietnamese words. Scholars see it as a completely different dialect and call it Min.
Not in all cases. Min is too different from Mandarin. Have you seen the movie Coughing Tiger Hidden Dragon? One main character is Malaysian, another from Hong Kong, and the other from Beijing. Beijing dialect is pure Mandarin, the Malay dialect is mixed with a lot of Malaysian words, and people in Hong Kong speak Cantonese. The actor from Hong Kong spoke with a Cantonese Accent. There was a comment that none of them understood what the others were saying.
Another factor is that the same language in different countries will evolve differently. Take simplified characters in China and traditional characters in Taiwan. Plus, china and Taiwan have different histories and historic figures, so idioms based on that will vary greatly and won't be understood by the other

1:31 I'm a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese (Taiwanese). Your pronunciation is 100% correct. The most difficult part of spoken Mandarin Chinese for native speakers of non-tonal languages is, apparently, the tones. According to my observation, 99% of foreigners in Taiwan cannot pronounce the four tones correctly.
Thank you so much for sharing, I would love to learn Taiwanese Mandarin. Are the resources he shared in this video relevant?? Please clarify, because I heard that Chinese Mandarin is different from the one spoken in China
@@wilfredmkhatshwa8195 what do you mean by "Chinese Mandarin is different from the one spoken in China"? As with English, English in one country is different from English in another. They evolve differently because of culture and various other factors. If you're talking about Mandarin spoken in China compared to the dialect spoken in Taiwan, there are similarities but they are completely different. As in China, putonghua (meaning common language) in southern china is quite different in tone from Mandarin spoken in northern china.

I started a couple days ago learning Chinese, took me all this time to learn that basically to get Chinese down, memorize the characters and how they sound, and even if you have the Chinese keyboard on your computer or phone, as long as you type the sound, it puts in the characters for you. So it helps to read and type. Writing by hand though...that's a challenge. Anyways, 谢谢!

10 min for 30 characters per day. For about 50 days, you can recognize and pronouciate the most common Chinese characters. Then 15 min per day for Chinese vocabulary and vernacular grammar for the next 3 months, you should be able to communicate fluently in standard Chinese. You can engage in daily conversations and read/watch the news without any problem. Then, it's 8 hours of heavy study every day in the next 10 years to understand the "real" Chinese.
Interesting video, with some good resources included. I've tried learning Mandarin before, but it was too hard for me and I had to quit. I couldn't even get the basics down.
As a native Mandarin speaker, I strongly recommend Mandarin learners to study standard Mandarin which refered to the mandarin with northern Chinese accent。
Thank you so much for your advice. I'm currently learning English and I'd like to reach at least a B2 or a C1 in this language and after that I'm gonna move to Chinese :3

the beautiful way I learn (and I'm improving) english, and, then, in english, I'm learning to speak chinese
@@wilfredmkhatshwa8195 Sorry, I don’t know 🤷♀️
@@wilfredmkhatshwa8195 what do you mean by "Chinese Mandarin is different from the one spoken in China"? As with English, English in one country is different from English in another. They evolve differently because of culture and various other factors. If you're talking about Mandarin spoken in China compared to the dialect spoken in Taiwan, there are similarities but they are completely different. As in China, putonghua (meaning common language) in southern china is quite different in tone from Mandarin spoken in northern china.
Thanks so much for all the tips, this is the best video I've seen so far for learning chinese as a beginniner
Do you want to learn Chinese? I'm a college student and my English is not good so i want to make friends with you . i can tell you many thinks about China
@@夕落映红 yes I do
thank you so much
thank you, this is so helpful, I am taking a high school introductory online class and the textbook I am following is so hard to learn from so these are some great tips. Especially the app tips and how you divide the time for HSK1 :)
شكرا لك براين علي هذا الفيديو الممتع والغني بالمعلومات والمصادر ❤❤❤
I started a couple days ago learning Chinese, took me all this time to learn that basically to get Chinese down, memorize the characters and how they sound, and even if you have the Chinese keyboard on your computer or phone, as long as you type the sound, it puts in the characters for you. So it helps to read and type. Writing by hand though...that's a challenge. Anyways, 谢谢!
I'm learning Mandarin on my own !
Nice!
我也是!!!我觉得太难了但是我喜欢!!!!

Thank you for the video! It's super helpful! I like Chinese Pod podcasts. They teach you new words and also mention culture related stuff. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is Preply actually. I liked iTalki way way more. Good luck to everyone learning Chinese!! We can do it!! 😅

I'm Chinese and a Muslim. I especially want to learn Arabic, but I don't know how to learn it. Seeing your comments, I think you should know Arabic. I don't know if you want to learn with me. I can teach you Chinese. You teach me Arabic.

Thank you, Brain. That was really helpful.
Brian, PLEASE make a similar video for learning SPANISH! THANK YOU!! 😊
Learning is different for everyone. It might be helpful if you learned international phonetics first.
如果你是非中文母語者,建議你應該學習「注音」而不是拼音,雖然學習起來比較困難,但它比拼音要精準正確且清楚

Amazing Video🎉🎉🎉
Could you make a video about how to learn Turkish?
It might take some time, but I'll see what I can do👍
Hello, what a wonderful video, I might it extremely helpful especially when you don't know where to start.
As a native Mandarin speaker, I strongly recommend Mandarin learners to study standard Mandarin which refered to the mandarin with northern Chinese accent。
why?
Thank you so much for your advice. I'm currently learning English and I'd like to reach at least a B2 or a C1 in this language and after that I'm gonna move to Chinese :3

Super helpful video thank you Brian for uploading and sharing . I watched this your video a few months early but I did go my own way by learning from 3 different books HSK 1 and I got confused and lost . . .I should have followed your advice. . . Now I am only learning from the book HSK 1 Standard Course and I am at lesson 5. I do love the Chinese calligraphy and I can write (with normal ballpoint pen) almost all the Characters of the dialogues from lesson 1 to 3.
For my 4 months experience ,if you are a beginner HSK 1 , I would recommend the Brian suggestions on the video as it helps has helped me lot.
Happy study 再见
Great info. Cheers.
Great video, I highly recommend Chinese Pod for beginners
It was a well-executed and informative video. Good work, guys.
Thanks for the recos 💜💜
For the HSK books, do you recommend buying the workbooks with it?
buying workbooks will give you additional practice and often will provide useful information that you will not get elsewhere. well worth the investment if you're serious about getting ahead.
