    HUGE red flag here: In order to use this, you have to essentially apply dry heat to an empty pan. All the food is extended _above_ the surface of your pan or pot. This is likely to deform the center of your pan and make it bow upward. Once you pan has a hill in the middle, and oil runs to the edges instead of the center, you might as well throw it away, it's not going to produce evenly cooked food any more.

    First, well done! Being a sucker for gadgets, this intrigued me at first blush. We have had a traditional air fryer for many years and loved it (actually loved them - we have 2 mini air fryers that we use on our boat and RV). What caught my attention was the "use it on any pan" (never saw the infomercial just your thumbnail/title). Sounded very versatile. Watching your video, first thing I thought was "it uses BATTERIES?" Ummm, that doesn't add to the cost of doing business. And then, that little sad looking fan... how on earth could that circulate the "hot" air around the food enough to crisp up anything? Thanks for the review. Always enjoy them.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea that "fan" was pathetic. A while back the oven went bye bye and I improvised something to hold me over a couple of days. I used a cast iron pan and made a raised net using stainless wire. It kind of worked as a makeshift oven. Problem was that it tended to burn the bottom, something that happened in the video. By using low heat when doing something that required a long time in the "oven" it made it less prone to burn the bottom of what you were cooking. Again that matches the instructions for the "air fryer" lid in the video.
      Now I can see how adding a fan to agitate the air inside would allow the heat to spread more evenly inside, making for a more even heating and less risk of burning the bottom to of what you're cooking. But that pathetic excuse in this lid is not enough to do the job. Make it four times the size and it might make a difference, but then the batteries would run out even faster.
      Oh and the steamer doesn't really work. You need something more akin to a net that will allow the air to move around whatever is being cooked.

    • @thatgayqueen2826
      @thatgayqueen2826 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blahorgaslisk7763 yes. It looked like the steamer basket still needed little legs on the bottom to lift it above the aluminum foil. That would give the hot air more room to circulate around the food.

    One problem I noticed was the fan spins the wrong direction. The fan would be pushing air from the top of the pan down to the bottom. You would want the fan spinning the opposite direction to pull heat from the bottom and circulate it back down. This is the same principle as fans in houses for winter/summer.

    • @rachelrodgers9171

      Maybe if he installs batteries backwards the fan will run in opposite direction?

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that works in a house because you're pulling air from the bottom i.e. the living area to the attic, how would that work in a pan? The fan doesn't look big or powerful enough to hardly move air in the first place, so it's kind of trivial thinking about the flawed design when it's already failed at the starting line.

    • @i_am_board_games
      @i_am_board_games ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vgamesx1 Not denying it is a failed product but the amount of air you would be circulating in a pan is miniscule. I am guessing those fan blades are at most 2-3 inches and working in at max a 10 in x 2in area. A fan in a house is 52" generally in a room at least 100 square feet. You don't need much power to move air in that area. An interesting test would be to pump some smoke in there and turn the fan on and see how much it does move.

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@i_am_board_games Yeah but the point I'm getting at with the fan is look at a proper air fryer, the volume inside is only 2-3 times larger than a pan but the fan is strong enough to make light objects such as a slice of bread fly around in its basket, the large volume of air is the main thing that makes it cook evenly and heat much better than just a convection oven, so yeah if you're not even going to get the fan right you might as well not bother with the product.

    Different stoves have different heating curves and I think it's better in this case to adjust your temperature based on what's happening inside the pan, not based on the one-size-fits-all instructions they provide.

    It might have been a good idea, particularly for those who don't want another appliance that won't fit in a drawer or cabinet, but it looks like a bait-and-switch situation, unless the inventor was scammed by the manufacturer. A footed rack and a plug-in fan might work better (who wants the batteries to give out while cooking?!), but you still might have to flip the food to get a better result.

    Always a good idea to preheat as you don't want to start cooking things like fries at a lower temp.

      @@grahamjohnson4702 My guess is that a high temperature "sears" the exterior of fries quickly while the interior perforce cooks more slowly, hence crisping the outside but not drying out the inside unless you cook it too long.

    I've been a fan of the channel since the Norelco One Blade review and immediately subscribed. The one thing I wish this had is a review scale at the end. Doug Denuro has the Doug Score, TFL has "buy it, lease it, rent it, or forget it. How about opening the review with "Today I am reviewing ________. Will I be Freakin Impressed, Freakin' dissapointed or does it just work 'as described' For example, this would end with "Freakin Dissapointed."

    So I have same Granite Rock pro pan he does and that handle prevents those "fit all size" lids to from actually getting a seal, at least the lid I had couldn't. At any rate even if the thing worked it's still more expensive than an actual air fryer.

    Was thinking this might be interesting, up until I saw the fan moving. Seriously underpowered for what its meant for.
    It basically turned a skillet into a low powered, extended timed microwave!
    & I have to agree that what they sent you is a freaking fielding strainer/collander.
    The aluminum foil in the pan initially likely acted more as a heat insulator/deflector, keeping the heat from fully penetrating the pan.

    I have an Emril Eglasis air fryer. It takes 18 minutes to cook a batch of fries at 400 degrees with a shake halfway. Though it is a little bigger than yours. Biscuits need to be flipped halfway as well. Maybe you needed to flip them. It sounds like a sound concept, but it needs more development.

    I know this is about an air fryer and a wanna be air fryer but if you like McDonald's fries you don't need an air fryer. Ore ida fast food fries are the ABSOLUTE best grocery store fries I have ever had. I LOVE McDonald's fries and used to always go through the drive thru and get a larger fry and a large dr. Pepper. Awesome. But a couple years ago I started getting extremely nauseous after eating them. I'm too old for all that grease. That's when I saw these ore ida fast food fries at the grocery store and decided to try them. OMG they taste just like McDonald's but without that lead feeling in your gut after eating McD's. You don't need to fry them just put them on a baking sheet in the oven. No need to spray the sheet with anything either. Fabulous.

We are truly appreciative of your shows--- Am looking for an air fryer and there are so many things -- even the additional/optional items need to be compared -- we have in the past had the glass jar ones and they worked really well -- but am now wanting to cook a whole chicken and not buy the chickens from the big clubs like Sams and BJ's and Costco --- be well and you are an inspiration and a real resource to us on a fixed income wanting to lower our electricity bill --- muchas bendiciones hermano

    I know I'm way late here but I'm pretty sure that stud in the rack isn't a handle, but rather a spacer to go on the bottom to support the middle, and so you can actually get some 360 airflow in the pan. Or he had the rack upside down. There's gotta be space underneath for airflow to work properly.

  • @snithfferx

    I do something similar, just using a regular pan and regular cristal lift. I only need a bit of water. and you can use the rack they give you in order to not burn the food. if you want to know how, just do the second try and reduce to low heat after the 5min mark.

  • @GnrMilligan
    @GnrMilligan ปีที่แล้ว

    I suspect the reason they tell you to turn it down to low after a while is that the little wobbly plastic fan and maybe even the motor can't handle the amount of heat needed for it to actually be a decent air fryer.And clearly the wire rack would work better as the heat would be more evenly distributed. I would love to see you test it again with the wire rack but with a high enough heat to make it perform as well as the real air fryer and see what happens.As always,an interesting and informative non biased review!

    I'm not even a minute in and I can honestly tell you I have that same type of lid, without the thermostat, it's made to fit many different pan sizes. All you have to do is put one of those steamer baskets that fold up in your pan and use the lid. Costs me like 10 bucks. I also have a domes lid that is formed like a Tornado with a steam vent in the top. It's coated in ceramic on the inside. It's supposed to direct the steam into a swirl over your food. Too bad I can't attach pics.

    ...AWC don't work (or it works but take a longer time) because heat is blown from the bottom and the aluminum and basket dampen the heat. Whereas, the heat in the AF is blown from the top and redirect from the bottom rack. However AWC might perform better with bar rack instead of the profilated basket.
