An Outlook on Biotechnology with Sam Kulkarni, CEO CRISPR Therapeutics

  • Today, 20 years after we sequenced the first human genome, we’re starting to see the fruits of genomics. Instead of treating symptoms, researchers are focused on finding cures for once chronic and fatal diseases. We’re starting to reimagine medicine in ways previously thought impossible. This week on the For Your Innovation Podcast, we’re joined by Dr. Samarth Kulkarni, Chief Executive Officer of CRISPR Therapeutics. Sam joined CRISPR in early 2015 as Chief Business Officer. Two years later, in 2017, he was appointed to CEO. In addition to his expertise in biotech strategy and operations, Sam has spearheaded initiatives in personalized medicine, immunotherapy, and other therapeutic technologies. In today’s episode, we’re also joined by ARK’s CEO/ CIO, Cathie Wood, who helps provides her insights on macrotrends currently affecting the biotech industry as we come out of last week’s J.P. Morgan Health Care conference. Tune in to hear more on costs of genomic therapies, AI integration, and why Sam believes the “roaring twenties” of biotech may be on the horizon.
    Key Points From This Episode:
    • Why today is an exciting time for biotech
    • Why Cathie believes macro factors, such as fears of inflation and valuations, are determining the present course of genomics companies
    • Innovations and Improvements emerging in the biomedical innovation space
    • The importance of former iterations of patented CRISPR-Cas9 for future treatments
    • Will the timeline for advancing drugs to market shrink with time?
    • Potential gene-editing developments in the near future - including the balance of ex vivo and in vivo
    • The possibilities of what it will take to expand human life, while also treating rare diseases
    • Sam on why having a capital base for sustainable funding could lead to better long term effects
    • Moonshot Ideas and the next 10 years
    Tweetables:
“Every pharma company will have to have a cell gene therapy unit otherwise you risk being left behind” - @CrisprSam

He is an wonderful CEO, he explains things very clearly and avoids unnecessary jargon so that ordinary viewers can understand what these companies are doing. This proves his credibility unlike many other professionals who just talk around questions and never really give clear answer. I am gonna collect some CRSP during this dip.

no, its not informative. Sam was daydreaming through the entire interview. Go watch an interview of an actual drug company. Moderna is knocking it out of the park. When you ask him what his drug pipeline is, he gives you a straightforward answer instead of changing the subject 3 times

Nice overview of how CRISPR could disrupt the pharma sector. The IP and Regulatory process components of the puzzle could possibly outweigh target identification/therapy development as time to market and valuation drivers. Although they have their own issues,AgTech and VetTech might be worth considering as side plays with lower regulatory hurdles.

I found gold in areas such as:
      1) the use of AI and op tactics which lead to ROIC in manufacture and screening efficiency.
      2) future landscape (in- vs ex- vivo; proportion of gene; role of small molecules, regen med etc)
      3) framework used ie. evolving tech through learning and iterations --- next gen
Areas I would love Ali to help investors to dig deeper esp potential risks:
      1) reason of Tony's rather sudden departure, and any impact to timelines
      2) competitiveness eg. any base editor, new cas, tapping AI via partnership eg. Insitro, Exscientia, Schrodinger etc
      3) patent battle risk eg. impact of losing fundamental patents; what if losing all outstanding patent cases

I say at this point you are better off investing yourself than have someone who is losing money day after day for over a year now. For example her average in TDOC is 170. Go buy it now for 75-6. And hold.

Have you ever thought that it was massively overpriced back in 2018?? The stock is not even profitable and has no clear path to profitability , why should it be higher than where it is priced now, just because it was at this level 3 years ago??

Unlike regular tech, bio-tech innovation will not be able to generate revenues on an ongoing basis as the technology continues to evolve. Apple for example was able to release the first iPhone, sell it, work in the background on the second and so forth, knowing most of those initial customers would be back for more next year and then some. This is fantastic business. We see first gen, second gen, crispr but at the end of the day we will need to wait for the ‘iPhone 10’ equivalent before crispr becomes a commercial product. This is beautiful, I’m invested, but let’s stop using tech as a catch all Goldilocks term. Everything in our world was tech at one stage. Not everything is a great iterative business model.

I'm invested in ARK funds, but there is no easy way to say this. All of the ARK funds have crashed catastrophically. When your funds are all down 50%, 60%, or 70% from their highs less than a year ago, it's really, really bad, especially when the S&P 500 is only down 4.5% from its all-time high. The goal of any good asset manager isn't just to make the highest return possible, it's to make good returns in a consistent way and to avoid catastrophic collapses in value like we have seen in ARK funds.

@@NomzWithDarren volatile barely explains this though. She' getting closer to losing all the gains since covid started.
I love her perspective. But her timing on buying stocks has been horrific.
A good portion of her stocks are down 50-80% from highs. Idt people realise that if you have a stock down 80%, you need a 400% rally just to break even. And I don't see any slowing down of her fund decreasing in value.
Maybe her timing is just off. But without tesla, her whole funds would be destroyed rn.

It is discouraging to be so down. I have lost a lot in ark funds on paper. Hopefully she will be right and in five years we will have earned a lot. I would have liked to avoid catastrophic losses too, I think that is a reasonable ask.

My two questions: how did we get to 120 patients dosed (which program has how many, etc.), and can we expand on the heart disease portion? This is the first time I believe $CRSP is mentioning the two.

    • @benharris8335
      @benharris8335 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

CTX001 has had 40 patients dosed ( data provided on 22 ) - CTX110 had 26 and I assume that will be a similar number for 120 & 130 which gets you to circa 120.

Sam has no idea about how companies are valued and should keep his mouth shut. Valuation is company agnostic. It is simply the present value of all future cash flows. Apple has generated more cash over the past 10 years and is going to grow even more in the next 10 years than crispr or any pharma company. Cathy, you should know better. This is such a bad interview and i wonder if it truly represents how Cathy really thinks.

Watched this and saw what a silly investment this is. What I see is man trying to control God's invention and investment (he gave his only son). Crsp is an impossible rabbit hole investment and this salesman knows it. Waste your money on the "hope" that man will figure out their impossible mission if you want to, but for this reasom (hope rabbit hole).....I'm out.
