This entire album "October Rust" is considered the most goth baby-making album of all time! Thousands of pimple-faced goths lost their virginity to this album in the late 90's. I saw them 3 times on this tour. 6 or 7 years ago my band got to open for the band Life of Agony, and the band Silvertomb was also on the show. Silvertomb features the guitarist and drummer of Type O Negative. I got to thank Johnny and Kenny for this album. I dated a goth girl at the time this album came out.... This album brought out the demons!

The video may have been uploaded 15 years ago but this song came out in 1996 (and the video a little after that). Members:
    Peter Steele - Bassist/Singer/Songwriter
    Kenny Hickey - Guitarist/Additional vocals
    Josh Silver - Piano/Synth/backup vocals
    Johnny Kelley - Drummer
Bass and guitars were tuned down 2.5 steps to B (I believe to accommodate Peter's lower vocal range)

Peter basically always had such an effect on the ladies. Ironically, he never found lasting love himself. The guy deserved to. And despite his 6’ 8” stature and bass-baritone voice, he did suffer from low self-esteem. And depression. He himself said his music was theraputic on some level. / On a personal note, I have a past era where I was deeply into Goth. I wore all black, dyed my long hair that color, did some makeup and dark bling, plus boots and a long coat. With that appearance, I had some unusual experiences: a woman came up to me in a store and asked if I was in a vampire cult. And some commented I looked like the Crow. But it was definitely who I was at the time, and I don’t regret my period spent on the dark side.

The piano was a keyboard patch blended with a synth pad. Pro Tools was still in its infancy. This album was largely recorded in analog, and transferred into digital for overdubbing, mixing, and mastering. That was the typical recording process in the mid 90's. But all of the core tracks were done in analog.
But yes, this is a perfect gothic love song. Peter was a master of blending evocative lyrics just graphic enough to get his intentions across without out being excessively explicit. An art form that is lost on many of today's artists.

I interviewed vocalist/bassist Pete Steele in 1987 when I was 16. Prior to Type O Negative, he was in a raucous NYC metal/punk/crossover band called Carnivore. They were pretty ferocious, with interesting lyrics and song titles such as "Jesus Hitler" which was about reincarnation and the second coming of Christ getting all mixed-up, "Technophobia" and 'Ground Zero Brooklyn". I was a big fan.

Type-O-Negative had so many bangers in their catalogue, you can just pick about ANY song that has a video on YT, and you might not regret. This one actually IS one of my favorites, if not THE favorite. But they had so many great songs that it's hard to decide. They had style, self-irony, a sound of their own, between goth, wave, doom, some kind of their own metal.
Peter Steele, who sang and played the bass, was a VERY tall gentle bipolar giant, who smoked and drank much too much red wine, and so he died way too early from a heart failure. He is missed by many people, listeners and musicians. Requiescant in pacem.

I would say it would be one of T.O.N.'s masterpeices, not only because of its brilliant sound, but the topic, it addresses the battle of trying to keep a relationships when you have been abused as a child ( CPTSD) hence the girl pulling out the doll from the leaves, her childhood youth from the past.. she is the one who will "love you to death".

What I love about Type O is that they set up the context with Peter's lyrics, and then the music extends and expands the vibe until you open your eyes, ask "is it over already?" and then realize you just listiened to an 11 minute song. I've been a fan of Type O Negative since MTV dropped the Black No.1 video way back in 19...I don't remember. And that was the short version. Even if you don't do a reaction (but you should), listen to the full 11 minute album version of Black No.1. I think you'll relate.

    @NittPicc
The album was called October Rush in the studio because they only had 6 months to record it.
The album October Rust (that this is off of) itself is MUCH darker than people realize.
The style was essentially forced upon the band, which is why none of the other albums sound like it.
The song Burnt Flowers Falling was written LONG before the album. Be My Druidess, My Girlfriend's Girlfriend were recorded as filler songs.
20-30 digital tracks per song. Combines digital and analog recording, which in 1996, was ahead of it's time.
The category of Goth was accidental, as Pete never actually set out to be that.
    Pete's Recorded vocal range: F1-G♯5 (F1-A♭5)
The band October Noir (who are HEAVILY influenced by Type O Negative) did a cover of this that will make you cry.
One of the most beautiful love songs EVER? Absolutely. Without question.
Peter Steele was a haunted and broken man, but had a heart of gold. He really was a good man. Gone FAR too soon.

One of my favorite tunes of all time. Type O is so unique….and so good! This song makes me cry….it hits me deep inside. It’s so beautiful, yet gut wrenching.
So….of you were a Goth and you loved this song, my advice would be to listen to “Song to the Siren” by This Mortal Coil. It is also so beautiful yet deeply melancholy. Elisabeth Frazier, from Cocteau Twins, sings this….and it’s otherworldly. You will NOT be disappointed.

This whole album is recommended, it's a quite unique and lushly melodic mix of metal, punk, goth, and Beatles harmonies. There are even elements of early '80s new wave/new romantic in there. These guys were in bands going back to the '70s. This video is shortened from the album version. Try "Green Man" and "Be My Druidess" next. Hot stuff. Be warned, they can get VERY heavy and caustic on some songs. Similar, but different: Samhain's November-Coming-Fire LP.

Type O Negative (1990 - 2010) was a gothic doom metal band from NYC... a mix of early Black Sabbath and halloween music 🎃😈They were called "The Drab Four" (The Beatles were the 'Fab Four') w/ frontman Peter Steele (vocals & bass) alongside Josh Silver (keyboards), Kenny Hickey (vocals & guitar) and Sal Abruscato (drums)... Johnny Kelly (drums) replaced Abruscato in 1994.
Peter Steele was called the 'green man' because of his obsession w/ the color green 🤢on all Type O Negative albums... He formed Type O Negative after disbanding his 80's hardcore band Carnivore, which released 2 albums... His lyrics were often politically incorrect w/ dark humor, brash attitude and self-deprecation ...
Type O Negative released their debut album 'Slow, deep and hard' in 1991, followed by the EP 'Origin of the feces' in 1992.
Their big hit came in 1993 w/ their album 'Bloody Kisses'... which got MTV airplay w/ the (edited) singles - 'Black No. 1'... 'Christian woman'... Their cover of Seals & Croft's 'Summer breeze' ... made it on the soundtrack of the slasher movie "I know what you did last summer".
'Bloody Kisses' sold gold in the US (half million copies) and eventually platinum (1 million copies)
Type O hoped their 1996 album 'October Rust' would do better w/ more commercial singles like - "My girlfriend's girlfriend"... 'Love you to death'... 'Cinnamon girl' (Neil Young cover) ...but it sold half million copies in the US.
Their 1999 album 'World coming down' was a dark record after Peter Steele experienced deaths in his family... w/ songs like - 'Everything dies'... 'Everyone I love is dead' ... 'All hallows eve'...
Type O released 'Life is killing me' in 2003... and it was a stellar album w/ songs like - "I don't wanna be me"... 'Anesthesia'... 'Life is killing me'... After some legal issues in his personal lives, Peter Steele delivered Type O Negative's final album 'Dead again' in 2007... the lyrics to the song 'Dead again' were prophetic in hindsight... Songs included - "The profit of doom"... 'September Sun' ... 'Tripping a blind man'...
Peter Steele reportedly took some time off after the 'Dead again' tour... News broke in 2010 that he had died from sepsis caused by diverticulitis at age 48 (R.I.P.)... His unhealthy lifestyle of drinking and drug abuse contributed to his untimely demise.
Type O Negative announced that the band was over.
Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly recorded 1 album as Seventh Void ('Heaven is gone')... and recently launched a new project Sun Dont Shine.

Heya, thanks for reacting to my fav band :). The keyboard sound in the background always reminds me of a harpsichord, but I have no idea if they actually used that instrument, probably just keyboard settings.

Type O Negative was never part of the goth culture. Even Peter will tell you this if he was alive. It just happened to be that goths like Type O Negative. Look up some of his interviews. Peter loved living in Brooklyn every time we heard his mad max car drove by we knew it was Peter. Miss him very much.

Go down the rabbit hole, all of their songs are this good, although, this may be my favorite. Christian Woman, i heard on the radio in 93? maybe? Addictive as hell.

Also, while you're in a gothic mood, please react to Alone by The Cure, from their most recent album...

Welcome to Type O Negative. And you are not bat shit crazy, this song is jam packed full of sexy goosebumps. Also I noticed a distinct lack of the band Electric Callboy on your channel. I think you would appreciate their heavy, dancy, funny brand of music. Also you might like a band called Lordi and their song "It Snows In Hell". This band won the Eurovision song contest a couple of years ago.
