Juan Gris produced some of the most beautiful art that the world has ever seen. His work is so beautiful it can make me cry. He was the most beautiful of all the Cubists for sure. I wish I could have known him.
My father in 1969 owned an art gallery in Durban South africa.As a 7 year old I would visit him after school and I used to wander in the gallery and his office hanging on the wall next to his desk were two paintings I remembered quite well one was an ugly woman made of shapes the other was very nice and colourful.one was a Picasso and the other was a Matisse. He had a large plan desk full of paintings,all originals, ones he liked but never sold too modern he told me ,so they just stayed hidden.One day an English dealer bought the Picasso and Matisse and I think also my dads favourite a Mondrian. But the stuff in the draws stayed.He died a few years ago, and only last week I got his stuff he had in storage one badly wrapped pile of old art works ,had a Juan Gris original in it.old and moth eaten but there it was after all these years.
