The Tube featured some of the greatest life performances of the late 20th century in a small studio in Newcastle Northern England!!! Actually incredible.

And remember that The Tube was not made by some ultra cool London media company, but by little Tyne Tees Television in north east England. Very satisfying!

It was filmed at Tyne Tees' own studios in City Road, Newcastle.

I have to steam in and say Malcolm Gerrie, the show's producer, was and still is a Geordie. Gavin Taylor, the director, was a Tyne Tees man too and lived in Northumberland. So the crucial people behind it were local to the area. I NEVER FORGOT and was very proud that this was all taking place just a few miles from where I lived (South Shields) as a kid in Geordieland. People won't appreciate it now but growing up in the 70s, pretty much everything on TV was happening somewhere else in the country and mostly in bloody London. All the time. Then the 80s came along and we had this and Auf Wiedersehen Pet (and before you say what about The Likely Lads....Rodney Bewes ruined it by having a Southern accent).
To this day I'm AMAZED they made The Tube in Newcastle and got everyone from Killing Joke to Cameo, from Duran Duran to Cocteau Twins, from Chaka Khan to Bad News....to play all the way up there in that small Tyne Tees studio.
If it hadn't been a Geordie made thing I also doubt that a London company would've had local nutcase (I felt nowt!) Foffo Spearjig appear on the programme. A Shields man I believe like me.
I was young, at school and a bit withdrawn in those days so I went to The Tube only the once to see Robert Plant do his set. It was a thrill to go under that neon arch and push to the front to see Zep's frontman on Geordie turf. :)
Heyyyyy that Gateshead gig at the end featuring The Beat (The Police were headlining). I was there in that crowd. More local stuff happening on a local show. :)

Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the Communards came later than 1982.

Love the energy of Cameo's performance here. They're struggling for breath themselves with the adrenalin. I remember it well and it was a shocker...we hadn't seen THAT in the UK on TV before.
I also remember Madonna's performance here at the time. I remember thinking she's lovely but....."backing tape" "miming"....nahhhhh! Next!

'The Tube' made Frankie Goes To Hollywood's first ever debut on tv as an unsigned act in 1983.

....from what I heard, Trevor Horn and ZTT saw the show and signed FGTH on the strength of what they saw, knowing full well they'd completely redo the track and make it a monster hit.
