Just got to the part about the trans men being misgendered. It's weird to include trans masculine people if you're gonna treat us like a woman following a trend. That pisses me off.
This is why I refuse to tuck like I cannot spend $20-$30 on a bra and $30 on underwear, dude that’s like a $100-$150 outfit just because of underwear like hoolllly fuuuuuck
Unfortunately, as someone who is trying to make and sell a new kind of tucking garment, it is damned near impossible to make prices low without making it yourself and valuing your time at $2.50 / hour. I wish it weren't true. edit: oh, and to make it a _good_ product. Companies selling glorified underwear with no features for tucking for $30 likely scammers/grifters
@@minteailiketea6202unfortunately I have a lovely brain where when sensory thing becomes less bad, now sensory thing has to stay that way all the time and I can't go back 😔
Afaik, there are no sweatshops in china making this kind of product. You have to buy it from people or small companies that operate out of countries with labour rights who want fair compensation for their time and effort
It's astonishing how unaware companies labeling themselves as queer can be. I was really excited about a local small business bookstore that had opened which labeled itself as queer and apparently had a large section of queer (mostly WLW tbh) books. I heard about them at pride and actually bought a book from them there but when I went to visit the actual location later that month the first thing I saw was a section dedicated entirely to Harry Potter books and merch. I turned around and left so fast.
I started a sewing class a couple of months ago, and now I I've got stuck in my head the idea that i should get a sewing machine for my local trans community center
Thanks for the video! As a trans girl, I'd looked at their site before and I was disappointed that we were so left out. I hadn't realized how egregious they've been to trans guys, though! Shopping for this stuff as a trans girl is so infuriating because like 90% of the stuff is really targeted at crossdressers so it's really fetishy. Sure, it's fun to have a bit of that stuff, but I mainly just want functional underwear that allows me to wear tight pants without broadcasting my bulge to the world
There are many options online. I'm not sure what the issue is. The bigger issue I've found is finding comfortable shoes and boots in wide sizes. Many transwomen have feet that are outside of the sizing of most major sellers of shoes
Honestly sewing is probably the best option. There will never be good cheap underwear specifically for trans women, the people who have the power to make that happen don't care about the trans community
im transfemme & love the Etsy shop Tuck Buddies. its a very small operation (only one person, i believe). they seem personally passionate about the community. they're about $30-$35, so still not the cheapest, but theyre super comfy & cute imo. the first pair i bought a year or two ago has held up super well. ive tried a couple different options and these are by far my favs.
I’m far more willing to pay $30 a pop for knickers from an independent one-being operation than to a company with a massive marketing budget that doesn’t live up to its own image.
if there's one thing i know about trans women, it's that years of being ignored/ridiculed by medicine and marketing has led us to some really fucking good DIY work
I am begging anyone who's going to come away from this video: if you see a trans person wearing tomboyx, please stop reminding us that they are problematic unless you specifically have another site that is as size inclusive as they are. I am 5XL, sometimes 6XL, and I struggle to find another place that specifically has the style of masculine swimsuit that covers the chest. It doesn't do me any good to hear 50x a day that I'm wearing something bad without any alternatives. I already know!!! I spent many hours looking for what I needed.
To me, they're not like capital E Evil enough to go around telling people already wearing them that it's bad, it's not like Shein, but I just wanted people to know they kinda suck!
They’re size inclusive for petites too!! Please show me one other adult underwear brand that doesn’t just go to XS, but XXS AND XXXS! Literally nobody thinks of size inclusivity for petites or little people.
I am DELIGHTED to hear mention of using stays for the purpose of flattening one's chest here, and I wish more people knew about this possibility. Structured garments are both safer and look much more convincing, in my experience, and if you get decent at making them, they can be made so beautiful and fit in so much better with different outfits. Wearing a binder out to a LARP because it's hot and there's going to be physical sports involved feels like shit, but wearing something that actually looks nice and isn't anachronistic looking is fun
OMG I never thought of using stays before and lordie I'm low-key pissed i didn't think of it before TTVTT (I also larp and do some historical sewing so it feels very hindsight 20/20)
Y E S, SAME!!!! I do not yet have the skills to make the boned stays-binder lovechild that I’ve envisioned (I guess I really need a sewing machine first and foremost, as it will undoubtedly be a labor intensive project), nor do I have the money to custom order one from someone else, but I have been thinking about this for quite a while! I cannot wear standard binders due to chronic illness, already impeded circulation, etc., but having a garment that relies on boning as opposed to compression fabric for its flattening effect would solve that issue, as well as have the potential to provide much needed pain relief thanks to the structured back support!!
OH!! th-cam.com/video/5CWWyCDTLHM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=90bmd8bFJkSSatHK This video was super helpful about boning!! It's for a corset, so the shaping is all wrong for bindstays but the overall technique around them still applies! And honestly, from what I know, *a lot* of people like to hand sew their boning in to ensure the best fit and tightness, so a machine isn't actually the most helpful for that specifically! ((Depending on the boning it would be hella easy to snap ur needle on it if you mess up or something!)) A project like this is more... Time intensive than specifically labor intensive or anything. 😊
@ Oh that is really helpful to know, thank you so much!!! and thank you for linking the video you were referencing:D I love what I’ve seen of Morgan Donner’s work!
Transfem here, i just got bottom surgery so like. I'm not buying any more tucking underwear anyway. But I will say I was a really big fan of the tomboyx tucking underwear - it really did work perfectly for me, but then i didn't really have much i needed to "stash away" so to speak. Hadn't heard of the other shop you mentioned but leolines was also great! Unfortunately they don't sell year-round and their underwear is slightly bulkier which doesn't go great with everything, but seriously, love them - so comfortable and very effective. Was not aware of tomboyX's history supporting cops :/ definitely would have made me think twice the next time i went to buy underwear.
They were also the first brand I ended up going to when I decided to get serious about gender expression and identity half a year ago, googling with pretty much no clue and NOT wanting a brightly coloured cheap looking thong or to have to tuck as opposed to compress, which seemed to be the only other option I could find. I agree they also worked for me but then even pre-HRT I could almost manage in non-stretchy panties untucked unless wearing absolutely skin tight gym leggings or a bodycon dress. So mostly I just wore daily typical women’s underwear or lingerie.
Congrats on the surgery. I wish you the best in your healing. This past December 12th was the 7th year anniversary of my bottom surgery. So I know what you have to deal with. Good luck!
Yeah i've seen their ads, but as a trans guy, i never felt comfortable shopping for stuff, that had the word "tomboy" it reminds me of how i used to be told i was just a tomboy when i was younger Also hearing about how they dont include trans WOMEN but include trans MEN is insane to me. They claim to be for women but dont include the women? Odd.
I havent gotten so far into the video but I would get so many TomboyX ads on Instagram. On impulse it feels so distastful and disrespectful to make clothes for transmascs with the name tomboy plastered all over it. It made me so upset seeing it as I was comkng out to more people in my life. Trying to try my best ro be seen as a young man while getting clothes that feel obviously made for women, even if more masculine women, felt like not only like disingenuous pandering but completely careless. Why would a person tying to be seen as a man want clothes that all but actively state I'm justna girl in boyish clothes.
hi hello thank you for the shoutout!! (and for the flattery lol) i'll respond to some of these points for anyone who's curious: - i wouldn't say it's a beginner project, not because of the boning but because getting the fit right requires some knowledge of how to troubleshoot and if you've never sewn anything before you're not gonna be used to that - ways to make it cheaper include using zip ties (thick ones, two or three to a boning channel for better stiffness) instead of real boning material (or, i guess, fabric store boning, which is cheaper but more flimsy than actual corset boning) and thrifting all your fabrics if you have none on hand to sacrifice (or, better yet, visit a creative reuse store if you have one nearby. they're usually dirt cheap). the back doesn't have to be made of a bra of course but i think it makes the process easier and more beginner friendly - i am, at present, revising this design (especially in regards to making sure it's adaptable to larger busts) and will be releasing instructions _sometime_ this year on how to draft a pattern based on one's own measurements. fascinating video!! i think i recall hearing some digs at the quality of tomboyx's "binders" a while back but man i never knew they were such a godawful company. gross :/
Omg, hi! Thank you so much! I do remember having to alter it a couple times to make it fit now that you mention it, which did require some knowledge. I can't wait for the new video! Thank you!
I used to get tomboyx ads but then I got adblocker so now they just annoy me with their products when I research binders. I somehow never realized they were attempting to be transmasc they really tried to call me a lesbian with their targeted ads so I got second-hand misgendered by them lol
When I was researching for binders a year ago I came across TomboyX a lot. Even at the time it felt so weird that it was called Tomboy when it seemed to market towords transmen. Regardless I just got a horrible vibe off the entire thing and I'm not surprised they'd be horrible.
I agree with everything you're saying, except your opinion about the underwear itself. The tomboyX long boxers is the only underwear I've found which has everything I need: high waist, flat front, thick waistband, legs long enough that they won't ride up. I'm willing to pay _good_ money for that shit
Years ago, when I went looking for my first binder, I remember being a bit icked out by the name having "tomboy" in it. I was called a weird girl and tomboy for years up until I came out as transmasc, and the idea of giving my hard earned 15 year old money to a company that felt like it was slighting me was *not* it. Anyway, I'm almost 6 weeks past top surgery, and 19 months on T. 🎉
Wow had no idea of some of their history. I'm a cis femme lesbian & have a handful of items from them. First purchase was years ago. Well time for me to do some research into other brands to get. I actually need to replace my underwear & bras & was going to make a purchase in the summer. Thanks for informing the community
I got a bunch of tomboyx tucking underwear during the beginning of my transition, they were fine at first, but when my butt started getting bigger cause of hrt and I got new ones to compensate they would never stay on properly. They kept sliding down my butt, so I had to wear my old boxerbriefs over them to keep them sort of in place. they still slid down but it wasn't as much of a problem. Now I use womens boxers over my tucking underwear. I did try new tucking underwear from untag, but they kept giving me uti's and they were really stiff. I really liked them initially, but the stiffness paired with the utis was a deal breaker. I know tucking increases the risk of a uti, but this was ridiculous. I probably just go ones that were too tight though. The material seemed more high quality than tomboyx
You’re a blessing. Firstly, thank you for bringing this up because I’ve been so confused about this company’s whole deal. Secondly, you testing both pairs for STP compatibility was hilarious and I appreciate your commitment. Your honest review and commentary, as well as giving us alternatives towards the end is all genuinely helpful. Especially with my partial visual impairment, if it isn’t written in the description of an item I probably won’t be able to tell the small details of things. And even then, I often miss information because of small text size/lack of accessibility features on any given website I’m shopping at. Thank you muchly!
Here's one program, but the wait times are often super long, which is true of binder programs too, demand is high www.pointofpride.org/free-femme-shapewear
19:20 origami customs is pretty cool. I got a now discontinued mesh bralette. They do custom sizing and they’re queer run in Canada. I get lots of emails from them about different workshops and charities for LGBT+ stuff The best binder I’ve had so far is from Shapeshifters. That one is made to measure 100% and they’re trans run and US based. Lots of cool prints. A bit more expensive. Spectrum outfitters is also pretty good but I accidentally got the smaller end of my size spectrum and so I out grew it pretty quickly. I unfortunately also outgrew the shapeshifters one but that’s on me for not telling them to leave a few inches for weight gain.
Shapeshifters was really uncomfortable for me, more so than most, and the bottom didn’t fit right even tho i sent my measurements. I’d brought up my pectus excavatum deformity and asked if there was anything they could do differently for it bc id had trouble with getting “uniboob” and not being able to push my breasts OUT because of the cavernous hole between them. They had nothing and had never heard of pectus being an issue…. I brought up maybe putting some kind of rouching or filler in the center but they said it should be fine. So I got one anyway, wore it once, it hurt so bad bc it was so tight and it just squashed my breasts into the hole and did not look flattering at all. For a brand that puts accessibility first, not having any considerations for the most common birth deformity in the world kind of rubbed me the wrong way. NOBODY makes bras or binders for pectus, i thought if anyone would it would be them… so i just free boob it now and just try to eat my dysphoria…
I’m a hoser, thank you for recommending Origami Customs. They’ll be getting an afab femme customer who really wants to support small business run by cool people in Canada/Turtle Island bc of you.
I never bought from them actually because of the name. It always weirded me out that they went with the word 'Tomboy' for branding despite aiming for transmasc folks Like, I feel like that word is pretty encoded in our culture as 'Cis girl who acts masc' and it's already such a fight for transmasc folks, binary or non-binary, to have our masculinity recognized and taken seriously in the cultural conversation. And maybe this is just me, so take it with a grain of salt, but in my experience I'm starting to feel like I see more nb representation then representation of binary trans men? People are just wholly uninterested in the lives and experience and expression of trans men across the board I feel like
I buy from tomboy X soley for their pad friendly boxers because i haven't seen that anywhere else and i still get my period as a trans man, i had no idea about any of this
If crawling to your local Joann’s is too much for you, use a shit ton of large zip ties. If you are new to sewing you will be less stressed if you use cheaper materials as you learn.
I learned how to sew from micarah tewers. She is the epitome of crazy Christian homeschooled girl. I do not endorse her betterhelp ads. However you can learn a lot about how to utilize the materials at your disposal.
This! I also see at least one beat up corset that is only good as a donor any time I go trifting. They are usually pretty cheap, since they are too damaged to be worn as is.
Is this literally the left side of a meme called "What fashion companies think trans people want to wear vs. What they really want" (edit: I see, no, it's worse ☠️)
I did know about the part of them misgendering a model, but I didn't know about all the other parts. I've felt conflicted about wearing their clothing, however as a bigger person god is it hard to find bras that are comfortable. Can't even bind properly unfortunately. I have 2 compression tops from them that I wear quite literally every day because they're the only thing comfortable I've found. I also have a pair of boxers from them from several years ago, and from a year ago, the one from a year ago is way lower quality than the one from several years ago. Hoping to find some sports bras/compression tops some day that actually fit me and feel good that aren't from a bad company tho.
I’m so glad people are talking about this in a collective way. I keep hearing the controversies alone and never connecting them together , so it all gets passed off as “well one thing against all the good this company is doing” like….”well it’s not just one thing and some of those things are very bad even singularly”
"Hello and welcome to my bathroom" I honestly hate tomboy x because of its name, im not a tomboy, im nonbinary, im trans, which... idk the name just leaves me feeling weird. Plus all the other stuff.
I had a couple of their softer bras, the ones without any compression. NOT ONLY did they fall apart before a year was up, but my neighbor felt obligated to comment on it when I was changing my laundry over one day! Horrible cursed garment
At least it's run by some lesbians. I was worried and waiting for the drop where you tell us that it's just a subsidiary of like hanes or fruit of the loom. EDIT: Oh wait, I should have kept watching, it got worse; basically just as bad.
@@Trash-Garbage-Trashmy instinct tells me that cis guys would cause problems, but I don't think there's any evidence to back it up in places that have implemented it?
I don't think Ive ever gotten ads for this company. However, I do get a lot of ads for PrEP. Google thinks I am more... active than I am. Google knows that I aspire to be a bisexual sl*t.
Yes omg!! I bought a “chest compression” top from them and was pretty disappointed with how much money I spent for what I got. The inside texture was so scratchy and I hated the feeling of the band (too tight too!) with basically no compression. Sucked for my needs, too much bounce. I could have just bought an actual binder somewhere else. Knowing now they don’t actually have trans people in leadership, it makes it clear that the compression top was only called that for marketing. Based on the good reviews I thought It was just me having this issue. I bought from them too because I was under the impression they were a small independent brand (trans owned too). I’m glad I stumbled upon this video.
I've been WAITING for someone to say this. As a transmasc with a bigger chest, none of their binders or "compression bras" will work for me. I haven't even bothered ordering one because in the pictures they clearly don't work for larger chests. I didn't even know about the police and misgendering things but that just makes this so much worse.
I love the fact that I was just talking about them, due to the fact that we were talking about queer clothing for Butch women. I always love to see your new videos~ ❤❤❤
My area has a queer FB group for mutual aid requests/selling/trading stuff. Fairly regularly someone will have had surgery and no longer needed their binders and are just giving them away. I highly suggest everyone see if there is an existing group in your area, and if there isn't, start one up. I have some Leolines undies. Expensive, but they are really good. But then my ass got bigger and they don't fit well anymore. Sad face.
I have a bunch of TomboX underwear, some of their styles are a nice middle point between regular and tucking underwear. But yeah, it's overpriced, and the tucking line is just garbage, both for sizing and comfort imo. Also, their quality slowly degraded over the last few years.
The hair-flying-upward sort of thing during the trying stuff on sequence? I loved that. My hair is rather straight, so it doesn't DO anything, ever, and I hate it.
My 2 cents on binder rec's: I (19F cis butch) have had 2 Underworks binders for ~3 years with somewhat regular wear that are still holding up great and get me flat enough not to bother me. My bust measures about 44" around and I wear a size XL. I also ordered a binder off of TMart last summer, but the size I got was too loose around my ribcage to stay in place, so I gave it to a friend. It did seem sturdy and a softer material than the Underworks one, which is a little scratchy more like a medical garment.
Damn that actually seems pretty shitty. Their tucking underwear worked pretty well for me but that might just be cuz what i had is fairly small. I agree that it seems pretty concerning to not be including trans women, while trying to essentially include trans men as "women" it kinda reeks of terf-y beliefs from them. If ive got enough money to afford another pair of tucking underwear I will not be buying from Tomboyx again!
Random cis guy commenting to please the algorithm. I have no idea if I'll ever use this info, but I'm glad it's out here for those who do need it! (I'm definitely gonna send it to my transmasc and afab agender friends tho) I appreciate you putting all this out in the world!
I got a TomboyX binder swimtop for like, $10 at Target a few years back. Very good quality. Also got boxers for like $3 a pair. They are okay. I am extremely picky on binders/compression tops. It HAS to have a front zipper (works like a vest). And because I have very particular desires, I can, for the most part, ignore ads. My other binders are from unknown names that offer what I want, and nowhere near as expensive as the mainstream brands, and seem of similar quality.
you can also use big zip ties in place of boning if you want to make the stays inspired binder, it’s cheaper and maybe more accessible. you could also make your own straps if you don’t have a bra to sacrifice
It kinda sucks that tomboyx is one of the cheaper options for tucking panties. The tuck isn't as good as something you could find on etsy but it's slightly cheaper.
Thanks for this video. You have put into words that confusion I had with their site because it prominently claims “for all kinds of bodies” or something similar, and I was looking at the tucking underwear and felt very confused about how that was supposed to work, because the models did not appear to need the tucking function. I also anticipate needing a binder in the future, since I may not want to be out at work for a while and I am on estradiol now.
on the topic of safe binding: there's also what is commonly known as boob tape, the "intended" use is just a bra substitute (for open-back clothes and the such) but i found that using it similarly to trans tape was effective enough and much more comfortable than a binder! though a big difference is that trans tape is meant to stay on the body for *way* longer, so boobtape was fine for one day, but i doubt it's very good for swimming or heavy exercise. i have no way of actually affording trans tape, so getting a kinda decent alternative for like 15BRL was awesome
23:35 oh hell yeah I might legit make a binder this way :D I stopped binding a few years ago because I can't get surgery cause there's no surgeons here atm or something.. My chest is so small anyway that wearing a vest completely neglects the need for a binder in most scenarios. But I do miss not "needing" my vest to go outside lol.
I bought some stuff from them years ago and they were terrible so I never went back, but it always struck me as pretty messed up that a company that targets trans people, some of the poorest people around on average, charges $30 for a pair of underwear. And the hoxer briefs really liked to get bunched up in the folds... SO uncomfortable.
I'm DD, I still haven't found a binder. I have noticed a decline in the undies over time, sadly. I love the boy shorts as a transmasc, but it's hit or miss. Rainbow dinosaurs ftw.
i feel like them marketing their compression tops as a ''kinder binder'' wjen in reality they're worse at binding than a sports bra is deceptive. i never purchased any of their products, but even based off of their social media posts i could tell that the way they marketed the compression tops was false and it was preying on people like me (with sensory issues) to purchase their products when in reality their materials are not sensory-friendly.
A good alternative to purpose made boning is zip ties. You have to cut off the knobby bits and make sure those cuts aren't sharp and pokey, but they come in different sizes so there are a lot of potential. For TomboyX? I bought a compression top and a swim top... which were the most uncomfortable compression tops I think I've ever tried. The arm holes cut SO bad into my shoulders and underarms, and the band was loose and rode up onto my chest at the same time. Definitely avoid them if you've been on HRT long enough to build any muscle. It makes so much sense to hear that they aren't *actually* made for trans men.
BRO I have a set of shein swim wear with the same design as those boxers 😭 (from long before I understood what shein even was) But, it shows how much effort Tomboyx is putting into their stuff 😅 (Mind the dinos is an incredibly simple design, but again, I think that's also the point)
Great video, thank you for making it. I really enjoy that you also made the Dorian Gay adapted 'stays' and that you are so adament that people know how to sew. As an instructor I appreciate that! Tho, I will say that sewing boning into a garment is NOT a beginner skill, and takes practice to do well.
Does anyone have any compression/minimizing tops that ARE NOT binders? I am an a cup who exercises constantly due to a medical condition so I cannot bind literally any day of the week I was SO excited bc my tomboy comp top is coming in the mail rn bc I thought this would be exactly what I’ve been looking for: a sports bra that does not attempt to explicitly “flatter” my body
I used TransTape or 2 sports bras pre op for my small Cs. TransTape was so affirming! I could wear it for up to 3 days at a time, and I truly felt topless when I wore it out. It came off easily in an oily bath. I got a handful of blisters through the years that I used it, but it was always because I got impatient while removing it.
Back when my chest was smaller, high-compression sports bras did the trick just fine for me. Might be because my hips were naturally more emphasized than my chest at that point but idk. I even managed to find one that matched my skin color so I could use it for a cosplay of Jareth from Labyrinth. I highly discourage stacking sports bras for your ribs' sake, though. Just take the cups out (if it has them) and try to let the cut of the rest of your clothes pick up whatever slack.
I hate that I can't relate to this struggle (like, at all), but I love to listen to these autistic ramblings. A seriously underrated TH-cam channel. An undiscovered gem on the scorched internet hellscape.
As a fellow Adblock user I also only know about the brand tangentially, but THANK YOU for this and also for the primer on binders. I've been wanting to try a binder because my huge bazongas regularly give me weird feelings that I thought were general insecurity but turns out are actually just dysphoria lmao. I have to import pretty much any brand so I just searched a local buy used site, and found a gc2b that should fit me!! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) I don't think I want to flatten out completely, just minimize slightly more than what my compression sports bra that I've been wearing to shreds has been doing.
It's tough because in my experience over the past 6 tomboyx has made some pretty durable products. And the Oragami Customs I got fell apart quickly. Buying clothes suck.
I have a tomboyX adjustable compression top which works well for me in that it adjusts so that it doesn't cause pain the way a standard sports bra would. I have found the elastic in the lower area bends which isn't great. But I haven't seen (m)any other options with the adjustable straps. I have fibromyalgia so it's good for me. Short Stays seem awesome, but above my level of sewing.
I bought a tomboyx compression top when I was looking for something to replace my gc2bs during the period where gc2b was becoming less high quality and I didn’t hate it but you definitely had to situate every thing a specific way to get the look you wanted. Luckily I am post op now so I don’t have to worry about that anymore but it definitely wasn’t the worst thing ever though far from the best and I always preferred my old worn out gc2b anyways
i’ve tried out a lot of tucking underwear and i really think theres not one that will work for everyone. i’ve been most pleased with origami customs, not only in quality but in their mission and actual support. they do custom sizing for free and when i had issues with my undies they’ve helped me with a new set. it’s my favorite most comfortable brand so far. that being said i feel like there’s a long way to go across the board for representation of trans women in these fashion places geared for us. i’ve never really felt seen in any promos. like, im a blue collar nb lesbian. i feel like this sort of “look” is way more seen in the transmasc / butch space. most models for trans women i’ve seen (for tucking undies) are somewhere more along the lines of explicitly femme people - or toward drag queens. which. idk it’s not the most welcoming when as a trans woman i am lumped in with, and i don’t mean this disparagingly, men who love to be fem and dress up. i don’t wear makeup i almost never wear dresses or anything like that. i wear jeans that make my ass look good on my off days lol it just never feels like in these promos i see people who are just looking to be plain and unspectacular. i’m glad we have that rep for those people but it’s always been discouraging trying new brands out because of this
for real it’s so annoying that they target so many ads at me and have almost nothing for trans women. - I think Origami Customs is better I love how they do sizing.
Yeah I got one of their swimsuits and the piping under the arms rubbed my biceps raw after like a week where I went to the pool 4 times. They did have a good size range but it's just not super practical for doing swim workouts.
I have one thing from tomboyx, a sports bra in my size, at the time I had G/H cups, now I have K/L cups, it's next to impossible to find a sports bra in my size and is less than 50 USD, good ones can cost 120 USD, tomboyx was selling one for 25USD, and 4 years later I still have it, it's streashed out now, but because of that I can still wear it, it doesn't do much more then help my tits breath in the summer, but it's still useful to me. in 2020, they weren't quite gender-inclusive, they were more about body-inclusivity, their compression top was still labeled as new, didn't come up when searching for binders, and they were very clearly lesbians. when I went back to see if I could get a new bra, I noticed all the changes and it didn't sit well with me, but I strugged it off, the bra I wanted was 35USD I only had 25USD, so I left and didn't really consider them again.
This video has interesting timing since me and my girlfriend just today talked about how she wants to try buying some girl underwear for the first time (she's transfem) She said she wanted something in the style of Calvin Klein underwear, the more (gender) neutral vibe with a prominent waistband (but she doesn't want to buy from CK) And we found that tomboyx sells that style of underwear and she's planning to get some there Now I'm not sure if I should advise her against doing so? Because none of the other places linked/I can find seem to sell similar style underwear without a tucking feature (which she doesn't want/need) Does anyone know of a company that's slightly more ethical (and maybe a bit cheaper) where they sell the more masc/gender neutral style underwear (that's not tucking or just straight up men's underwear)
At my size ive struggled to find clothes that work at my size and i used to buy my boxers there but since all the bullshit came out ive been reluctant to order again, I need to find a new company as its getting time to order underwear again but finding a company that makes 4-5xl feminine fit boxers (i am a cis woman but i do care about my trans friends and family). The only product I will ever order from them again is their unisuit swimsuit, Ive yet to find an equivalent product in my size anywhere and they dont need to be ordered often (90$ every few years at most. Did find a company for all my non-boxer underwear needs tho! There is an independent furry studio that specializes in fun fursona based undergarments called Tails End Studios. My trans guy friend loves their tabby cat binder. Hilariously tho they have so much more a market for binders than bras and bras and bras are only done sparingly usually upon special request. Im in discussions getting a run printed for me tho cause i struggle to find good sports bras and the owner is pretty understanding of that and agreed to consider a custom run for me next time they open those. ALSO custom sizing is free no added charge which as a plus size person is so important to me. They are on the pricier side overall but its worth it
When I came out, some of my friends recommended them to me and this was before they even started branding themselves towards transmasc people….it was just a lesbian site at the time lmao it was 2015
I keep getting ads for queer dating. I don't remember what it was called maybe tiamo or something. It was the ad I got the most. I'm a bi who caught the worst std... pregnancy and marriage. I didn't look at it. I feel like it sucks, but maybe I'm wrong.

😔 not gay enough for targeted TomboyX ads is a new low
didn't look at enough lesbians on Bing
Or you're too gay. They knew you would reject them lol.
Too gay in the wrong direction like me maybe lol, I hadn't seen any ads by them either
Lmao I get those ads as a cis man. God forbid a dude care about the issues his trans homies face lol
well that, or u are too european /hj
Weird that I've been getting TomboyX ads as a cis guy. A cis guy who cried over I Saw the TV Glow, but still.
Oh
There is still time
There is still time, trust me.
Gotta put a pin in this and check in after 2 (now maybe 4 (or more) years)
Tbf, most people can relate to I Saw the TV Glow without being trans, we all try to fit society scripts to some degree... And it sucks
Just got to the part about the trans men being misgendered. It's weird to include trans masculine people if you're gonna treat us like a woman following a trend. That pisses me off.
It's capitalism. They're not including, they're fleecing.
I have no idea what tomboyx is because I have seven trillion adblockers on every device I own but I am hella excited to find out
Somehow tucking underwear being 30$ feels so depressingly common
This is why I refuse to tuck like I cannot spend $20-$30 on a bra and $30 on underwear, dude that’s like a $100-$150 outfit just because of underwear like hoolllly fuuuuuck
Unfortunately, as someone who is trying to make and sell a new kind of tucking garment, it is damned near impossible to make prices low without making it yourself and valuing your time at $2.50 / hour. I wish it weren't true. edit: oh, and to make it a _good_ product. Companies selling glorified underwear with no features for tucking for $30 likely scammers/grifters
@@minteailiketea6202unfortunately I have a lovely brain where when sensory thing becomes less bad, now sensory thing has to stay that way all the time and I can't go back 😔
Their tucking underwear isn't even that good. I've got some tucking underwear I spent $45 on and it was very worth it, but tomboy X, not so much.
Afaik, there are no sweatshops in china making this kind of product. You have to buy it from people or small companies that operate out of countries with labour rights who want fair compensation for their time and effort
I remember when they released their Harry Potter line. That was a real dumpster fire.
How absolutely tone deaf of them 🙃
Yikes 😬
It's astonishing how unaware companies labeling themselves as queer can be. I was really excited about a local small business bookstore that had opened which labeled itself as queer and apparently had a large section of queer (mostly WLW tbh) books. I heard about them at pride and actually bought a book from them there but when I went to visit the actual location later that month the first thing I saw was a section dedicated entirely to Harry Potter books and merch. I turned around and left so fast.
I started a sewing class a couple of months ago, and now I I've got stuck in my head the idea that i should get a sewing machine for my local trans community center
Honestly, that's a great idea!
This sounds like a great idea! ❤❤❤
Sure, it's fun to have a bit of that stuff, but I mainly just want functional underwear that allows me to wear tight pants without broadcasting my bulge to the world
Seriously! Is it too much to ask? 😭
There are many options online. I'm not sure what the issue is.
The bigger issue I've found is finding comfortable shoes and boots in wide sizes. Many transwomen have feet that are outside of the sizing of most major sellers of shoes
Honestly sewing is probably the best option. There will never be good cheap underwear specifically for trans women, the people who have the power to make that happen don't care about the trans community
im transfemme & love the Etsy shop Tuck Buddies.
its a very small operation (only one person, i believe). they seem personally passionate about the community.
they're about $30-$35, so still not the cheapest, but theyre super comfy & cute imo. the first pair i bought a year or two ago has held up super well. ive tried a couple different options and these are by far my favs.
ooooh, i just discovered they also have a 2nd Etsy shop under the name Junk Snugglers for more options!
great rec thx u
@jazzpear8877 yeah, so few brands have super small sizes
I am DELIGHTED to hear mention of using stays for the purpose of flattening one's chest here, and I wish more people knew about this possibility. Structured garments are both safer and look much more convincing, in my experience, and if you get decent at making them, they can be made so beautiful and fit in so much better with different outfits. Wearing a binder out to a LARP because it's hot and there's going to be physical sports involved feels like shit, but wearing something that actually looks nice and isn't anachronistic looking is fun
OMG I never thought of using stays before and lordie I'm low-key pissed i didn't think of it before TTVTT
(I also larp and do some historical sewing so it feels very hindsight 20/20)
I’m a renaissance festival performer. Can confirm. Thank you for bringing it up! Stays are criminally underutilized for this purpose.
OH!!
th-cam.com/video/5CWWyCDTLHM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=90bmd8bFJkSSatHK
This video was super helpful about boning!! It's for a corset, so the shaping is all wrong for bindstays but the overall technique around them still applies!
And honestly, from what I know, *a lot* of people like to hand sew their boning in to ensure the best fit and tightness, so a machine isn't actually the most helpful for that specifically! ((Depending on the boning it would be hella easy to snap ur needle on it if you mess up or something!))
A project like this is more... Time intensive than specifically labor intensive or anything. 😊
@ Oh that is really helpful to know, thank you so much!!! and thank you for linking the video you were referencing:D
I love what I’ve seen of Morgan Donner’s work!
They also worked really well for my girlfriend too, but I wonder if quality has gone down recently since she got hers two years ago or so?
yay! congrats on getting your surgery
Good luck!
Yeah i've seen their ads, but as a trans guy, i never felt comfortable shopping for stuff, that had the word "tomboy" it reminds me of how i used to be told i was just a tomboy when i was younger
Also hearing about how they dont include trans WOMEN but include trans MEN is insane to me.
Yeah, they only relatively recently rebranded towards transmasculine people, it was all about lesbians before
hi hello thank you for the shoutout!! (and for the flattery lol) i'll respond to some of these points for anyone who's curious:
- i wouldn't say it's a beginner project, not because of the boning but because getting the fit right requires some knowledge of how to troubleshoot and if you've never sewn anything before you're not gonna be used to that
- ways to make it cheaper include using zip ties (thick ones, two or three to a boning channel for better stiffness) instead of real boning material (or, i guess, fabric store boning, which is cheaper but more flimsy than actual corset boning) and thrifting all your fabrics if you have none on hand to sacrifice (or, better yet, visit a creative reuse store if you have one nearby. they're usually dirt cheap). the back doesn't have to be made of a bra of course but i think it makes the process easier and more beginner friendly
- i am, at present, revising this design (especially in regards to making sure it's adaptable to larger busts) and will be releasing instructions _sometime_ this year on how to draft a pattern based on one's own measurements.
fascinating video!! i think i recall hearing some digs at the quality of tomboyx's "binders" a while back but man i never knew they were such a godawful company. gross :/
Omg, hi! Thank you so much! I do remember having to alter it a couple times to make it fit now that you mention it, which did require some knowledge. I can't wait for the new video! Thank you!
I used to get tomboyx ads but then I got adblocker so now they just annoy me with their products when I research binders. I somehow never realized they were attempting to be transmasc they really tried to call me a lesbian with their targeted ads so I got second-hand misgendered by them lol
babe get up 12am trash discourse video dropped
Every time I decide to go to bed early… trash has a new video and I have to watch.
When I was researching for binders a year ago I came across TomboyX a lot. Even at the time it felt so weird that it was called Tomboy when it seemed to market towords transmen.
Regardless I just got a horrible vibe off the entire thing and I'm not surprised they'd be horrible.
Right? Like, tomboy is a word a lot of trans men dread being called
I’m immune to tomboyX because I am the ultimate femme
I agree with everything you're saying, except your opinion about the underwear itself. The tomboyX long boxers is the only underwear I've found which has everything I need: high waist, flat front, thick waistband, legs long enough that they won't ride up. I'm willing to pay _good_ money for that shit
unfortunately they are very comfortable, I do like them
Years ago, when I went looking for my first binder, I remember being a bit icked out by the name having "tomboy" in it.
Yesss, gc2b also. While we're on the topic I wish tucking underwear was available for free in the same way binders often are.
It really should be!
I get lots of emails from them about different workshops and charities for LGBT+ stuff
The best binder I’ve had so far is from Shapeshifters.
They're also pretty expensive. I've bought multiple binders from Origami and 2/3 weren't sized properly :/
It always weirded me out that they went with the word 'Tomboy' for branding despite aiming for transmasc folks
Like, I feel like that word is pretty encoded in our culture as 'Cis girl who acts masc' and it's already such a fight for transmasc folks, binary or non-binary, to have our masculinity recognized and taken seriously in the cultural conversation.
And maybe this is just me, so take it with a grain of salt, but in my experience I'm starting to feel like I see more nb representation then representation of binary trans men? People are just wholly uninterested in the lives and experience and expression of trans men across the board I feel like
@@nicolasnamed oh absolutely
@Trash-Garbage-Trash Thank you for replying, at the very least so I know I'm not alone/crazy for feeling this way
I buy from tomboy X soley for their pad friendly boxers because i haven't seen that anywhere else and i still get my period as a trans man, i had no idea about any of this
I mean, they're not like super villain evil, they just kind of suck, so no one should feel bad about ordering from them in the past or anything!
@ while you are at the thrift store, you can look around at bed sheets. You can get a shit ton of fabric for two or three dollars
Is this literally the left side of a meme called "What fashion companies think trans people want to wear vs. What they really want"
(edit: I see, no, it's worse ☠️)
"Hello and welcome to my bathroom"
I honestly hate tomboy x because of its name, im not a tomboy, im nonbinary, im trans, which... idk the name just leaves me feeling weird. Plus all the other stuff.
I had a couple of their softer bras, the ones without any compression. NOT ONLY did they fall apart before a year was up, but my neighbor felt obligated to comment on it when I was changing my laundry over one day! Horrible cursed garment
I was considering going to sleep early tonight. But I guess not.
At least it's run by some lesbians. I was worried and waiting for the drop where you tell us that it's just a subsidiary of like hanes or fruit of the loom.
EDIT: Oh wait, I should have kept watching, it got worse; basically just as bad.
9:36 this! I am a trans guy, all of my friends are girls, I go to the women's restroom with them, cuz why wouldn't I? 😭
toilets should be gender neutral, I will die on this hill
@@Trash-Garbage-Trash that's what I always say! Cuz there's no good reason for them not to be
@@Trash-Garbage-Trashmy instinct tells me that cis guys would cause problems, but I don't think there's any evidence to back it up in places that have implemented it?
@@phoenixvance6642 No, a lot of places have them and it's fine, everyone just shits and pisses normal style
Yeah the only binding method that's ever worked for me has been trans tape. Titty origami is magic
Sad face.
$30 for underwear?? outrageous😮
Right? So expensive!
My hair is rather straight, so it doesn't DO anything, ever, and I hate it.
boy howdy I sure do love being outed by a billion tomboyx ads when I try to show a funny meme I found to someone
lmao they really do be outing you
i personally use their sports binders for running and uh bad idea
I always assumed it was a lesbian company idk how I managed but I just assumed it
I autistically have 20-30 pairs of the same black tomboyx hipster underwear but every other garment of theirs I've gotten has been unacceptable
So relate to the double fisting of beverages! Trash for the masses!
(I'm definitely gonna send it to my transmasc and afab agender friends tho)
I appreciate you putting all this out in the world!
Nice timing, I’m getting to the point where I probably need to replace my tomboyx boxers, now I’ll be more informed
you can also use big zip ties in place of boning if you want to make the stays inspired binder, it’s cheaper and maybe more accessible. you could also make your own straps if you don’t have a bra to sacrifice
I was kind of thinking about tomboyx to replace the last of my old & failing Step Ones. Thanks for the info. I'll keep looking.
on the topic of safe binding: there's also what is commonly known as boob tape, the "intended" use is just a bra substitute (for open-back clothes and the such) but i found that using it similarly to trans tape was effective enough and much more comfortable than a binder! though a big difference is that trans tape is meant to stay on the body for *way* longer, so boobtape was fine for one day, but i doubt it's very good for swimming or heavy exercise. i have no way of actually affording trans tape, so getting a kinda decent alternative for like 15BRL was awesome
Excuse me its TomboyTwitter
Lmao
i feel like them marketing their compression tops as a ''kinder binder'' wjen in reality they're worse at binding than a sports bra is deceptive. i never purchased any of their products, but even based off of their social media posts i could tell that the way they marketed the compression tops was false and it was preying on people like me (with sensory issues) to purchase their products when in reality their materials are not sensory-friendly.
BRO I have a set of shein swim wear with the same design as those boxers 😭 (from long before I understood what shein even was)
But, it shows how much effort Tomboyx is putting into their stuff 😅
(Mind the dinos is an incredibly simple design, but again, I think that's also the point)
TRASH DISCOURSE, AHH. I know what I'm watching tonight.
Didn't see the point of a whole video about this clothing company being mid until I got to the cop stuff. Yuck
I haven't gotten ads in... 6, maybe 7 years.
Heavy duty zip ties can make cost-effective boning, especially for those looking to avoid online shopping and fabric store notions pricing
Does anyone have any compression/minimizing tops that ARE NOT binders? I am an a cup who exercises constantly due to a medical condition so I cannot bind literally any day of the week
I was SO excited bc my tomboy comp top is coming in the mail rn bc I thought this would be exactly what I’ve been looking for: a sports bra that does not attempt to explicitly “flatter” my body
Agree with trans tape, I find it really works for stopping bounce and it's easy to move in
Back when my chest was smaller, high-compression sports bras did the trick just fine for me.
@@Asgabaser my skin hated medical grade adhesive, is that the kind they use?
@@lalas181thanks! I’ll try that
wait no way im watching this 10 min from release
I'm glad I could help!
It's tough because in my experience over the past 6 tomboyx has made some pretty durable products. And the Oragami Customs I got fell apart quickly. Buying clothes suck.
Omg! My mom sent me a link to tomboy x because we were looking for packing underwear! So glad the pricing put me off!🤦
I have a tomboyX adjustable compression top which works well for me in that it adjusts so that it doesn't cause pain the way a standard sports bra would.
I ended up getting an underworks binder I preferred more and I alternated between that and the gc2b ones
I'm 68 years old, and just buy a 10 pack of FOTL cotton briefs (granny panties, but not high-waisted) in my fav colors for $16, and I'm good.
13:17 actually looks just like pecs, that binder from gc2b looks really good on you 🎉
Thank you!
i’ve tried out a lot of tucking underwear and i really think theres not one that will work for everyone. i’ve been most pleased with origami customs, not only in quality but in their mission and actual support. they do custom sizing for free and when i had issues with my undies they’ve helped me with a new set. it’s my favorite most comfortable brand so far.
that being said i feel like there’s a long way to go across the board for representation of trans women in these fashion places geared for us. i’ve never really felt seen in any promos. like, im a blue collar nb lesbian. i feel like this sort of “look” is way more seen in the transmasc / butch space. most models for trans women i’ve seen (for tucking undies) are somewhere more along the lines of explicitly femme people - or toward drag queens. which. idk it’s not the most welcoming when as a trans woman i am lumped in with, and i don’t mean this disparagingly, men who love to be fem and dress up. i don’t wear makeup i almost never wear dresses or anything like that. i wear jeans that make my ass look good on my off days lol it just never feels like in these promos i see people who are just looking to be plain and unspectacular. i’m glad we have that rep for those people but it’s always been discouraging trying new brands out because of this
0:40 that inhale says so much without saying anything.
I was not expecting to see so much of the Trash Can but I won't complain.
you're welcome
for real it’s so annoying that they target so many ads at me and have almost nothing for trans women. - I think Origami Customs is better I love how they do sizing.
Yeah I got one of their swimsuits and the piping under the arms rubbed my biceps raw after like a week where I went to the pool 4 times. They did have a good size range but it's just not super practical for doing swim workouts.
Bought some stuff when my son started transitioning ( and some shorts for myself) but way too expensive for general wear
They are really size inclusive, it's the main positive I found with the company, I should have mentioned that.
Ive got four pairs of those boyshorts with the sport bands on them.
I had to seek them out, and this option is based
oh goodness I hate the idea of "the squeeze test" that's horrible (I'm a trans guy)
I just thought their compression tops weren't very good. I didn't know about anything else
only slightly related, but sheath has taken over my closet. i havent crab walked in years.
Hydration replenishment speedrun was amazing!
lmao thank you!
thank you for shining a light on this.
This video has interesting timing since me and my girlfriend just today talked about how she wants to try buying some girl underwear for the first time (she's transfem)
She said she wanted something in the style of Calvin Klein underwear, the more (gender) neutral vibe with a prominent waistband (but she doesn't want to buy from CK)
And we found that tomboyx sells that style of underwear and she's planning to get some there
Now I'm not sure if I should advise her against doing so? Because none of the other places linked/I can find seem to sell similar style underwear without a tucking feature (which she doesn't want/need)
Does anyone know of a company that's slightly more ethical (and maybe a bit cheaper) where they sell the more masc/gender neutral style underwear (that's not tucking or just straight up men's underwear)
They are on the pricier side overall but its worth it
omg I can't wait to look into that, that sounds amazing!
I saw just the title and want to comment that I have been saying this for my entire 10 year transition lmao
