    I don't understand the American prison system. Presumably most of these inmates will get out sometime, people who have experienced assault, high stress, trauma, inhumane and outright torturous conditions are so much more likely to not integrate back into society.

    • @AuthenticUnicorn
      @AuthenticUnicorn 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +55

      Yes, exactly. By and large our prison system is very very broken. Couple that with the fact we have more of our population imprisoned than practically any other nation and it's even worse. We need complete prison reform, but the culture of punishment (vs rehabilitation) is strong here unfortunately. 😞

    • @franminanicollier9431
      @franminanicollier9431 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +39

      Our prison system is an instrument of control.

    • @Alex-ir9nx
      @Alex-ir9nx 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "likely to not integrate back into society" They are not meant to in the US system. They are let out owing so much money, not able to get a job as you have been a criminal and you cant vote. You are meant to live in a tent and die or go back to prison as a slave to make stuff for next to nothing. Like.... bulletproof vests for the US army.

    • @HaralHeisto
      @HaralHeisto 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Prisons that are run for-profit are incentivised to create repeat offenders. Got to protect that future revenue stream!

    • @shedidntthinkthisthrough
      @shedidntthinkthisthrough 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We have the most incarcerated people. One point is that rich white devils can profit off of human suffering. Another is that it pacifies the populace because it’s a useful threat to keep Americans in line. And it provides a group of people who are demonized so that Americans stay busy hating the disadvantaged and “undesirables” of society instead of seeking political change.
      In all these areas, abusing and traumatizing prisoners and a high recidivism rate is desirable.
      You gotta understand, this is the country that inspired Hitler’s gas chambers. We were never against genocide, we just joined the Allies because of Japan’s attack and general geopolitics. And since we’ve not seen conflict on our soil in living memory, the people here are clueless as to the effects of their government’s actions.
      Hopefully this makes the whole scam make a little more sense.

    As a member of the LGBT community, we are living in extremely scary times. While I am not trans I have a few trans friends and they are all scared of what's coming. A channel called Innuendo Studios made a new episode of their series: The Alt Right Playbook, with the title south bank of the rubicon. I recommend it heartily, it is a very somber piece about how people define the point of no return. Or in this particular case, when people are finally comfortable using the F word to describe the current administration.
    F word here is not a swear word.

    The only thing I can say on the situation that Kara and other trans inmates now find themselves in is that I find it to be utterly horrific. I cannot imagine what they must be feeling right now. The US prison system is... certainly something else. I wish Kara and whomever find themselves in a similar situation much strength and I hope they can be as safe as they can be while inside a prison system that clearly doesn't care about human beings.

    Hey Ollam, thank you so much for the update. And importantly, for the warning and permission to skip / read the update. I'm nearly crying having just read about this, it would be harder to hold it together if I had listened as well. So much from me to all of y'all - not just you & Kara's family & loved ones, but all my trans siblings and their families over there across the pond. "he practice of joy is one of the most radical activist things in which you can engage" is perhaps the single most important activist truth that more people need to hear and take to heart. And I needed right now that shared bittersweet smile in the face of danger. Fight on, hack on, live on, love on. Forever and always.
    It's just an internet comment in a parasocial context, but from this trans hacker in the UK to all of y'all, I'll sign off as I would an email to a friend. Solidarity.

    The "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" was ratified by the USA (among many other) in 1948.
    Universal meaning that it applies to every individual of the human species with no limitation.
    I'm just leaving that here, because it might come in handy.

    • @fermitupoupon1754
      @fermitupoupon1754 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      True, but the US has been seemingly one of the more shitty places when it comes to actually affirming these rights. To give just a very basic example, forming a labour union is one of the rights granted by the UDHR, meanwhile almost every large US based company has draconian anti-union policies on the book and will actively try and union bust if they can.

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @fermitupoupon1754 they can try but it’s illegal and there are penalties for it. Remember too, this is international law so even if the Supreme Court sided with companies busting unions it can be appealed

    Also: After most of the Jews scarpered off to Sweden from Denmark in late 1943, they rounded the rest up. The Danes proceeded to write letters asking after them, asked to see their camps, *kept the pressure on* so that despite being in a camp the Jews that did get rounded up didn't have such a bad life, and the ones that survived that were eventually put on white buses and ferried to Sweden....
    How do we Dutch and Germans and French... and Americans... do something like that? Whose inbox do we fill? Unless you think making a stink is counterproductive... All of Europe is cranky about 47*, we'd love something to *do* about it.

If you are a custodian, and you are unsure if a document that might be dangerous to someone’s wellbeing is trash or not, maybe it’s safe to assume it’s trash, oh and remember, once something is refuse in a public trash receptacle, anybody could stumble upon it and release it publicly. Right now i would advise everyone in unsafe states to attempt to establish residency in safe states (even if that just means getting a home-owner friend to lease you their guest room for $1/month, etc) and getting paperwork
      Those with enough financial means to do so are often already going overseas for extended visits right now
      The biggest and best things to do are make sure you have your trusted circle of people, all contact info shared, and lawyers at the ready in case you have to spring into action yourself

    • @rebornfenix4412
      @rebornfenix4412 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Right now, unless you have the means to be a “tourist” for an extended period of time or qualify for digital nomad visas, there isn’t any country open to asylum claims GENERALLY for us citizens. CA still being safe means we can just move there (in the eyes of foreign countries)

    • @DeviantOllam
      @DeviantOllam  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @rebornfenix4412 claiming asylum is generally an awful plan for everybody. It is the last resort. If you claim asylum you have all these restrictions that you face

    • @rebornfenix4412
      @rebornfenix4412 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@DeviantOllam true, asylum sucks. Unfortunately for quite a few un/under employed trans people without skills other countries want asylum might be their only option in a terrible future.
      The further sad reality is that making it to another country may still be beyond people’s means. I sit here as a trans person in IT realizing just how much privilege I have compared to others that I actually have viable options to leave the us under skilled worker programs

    • @TheMatthooks
      @TheMatthooks 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The whole US prison system is, and deliberately so. Because the powerful angry middle aged white men who run it think that fear makes people compliant. They choose to ignore the hundreds of studies that show that punishment doesn't prevent offending. That the recidivism rates are not lessened by making prison harder.

    16:25 My positive emotions only flicked on on the 21st of November last. Makes this... all easier, honestly. The incandescence of that first moment of Joy (I think it was the 23rd when stuff had finally started sinking in) is a fresh memory I can use as a touchstone, like a beacon in the dark. Joy really does make everything more bearable, and my one regret with waiting so long to transition is that I haven't had that for more of my life. Definitely am of a mind to make up for lost time, and with that said
    Brothers and sisters (and those within and without those definitions): Shine so bright that it burns their fucking eyes.
    Thank you for covering this. I just..... fuck. Ima crawl back under my car and tend to my needs like a good girl, lol. (she's busted~)
