    My wife has just bought me a 1x30 belt grinder and I was looking at buying a plunge line jig but over here in the UK they're costing as much as £100+ so this is an ideal economy version, thank you for sharing.

    Even though this video is almost a year old, I thought I'd chime in. I don't have a Home Depot or Lowe's local, but I found the same hardware at Tractor Supply yesterday evening, saving me a 45 mile trip, although the stainless hex cap screws and nuts at TSC are quite high in price. I went with plain steel screws and nut.
    Thanks for the video, and a killer idea for us newbie knife maker wannabe's.

    Timing is everything! This is a better design than the one I was about to build this morning, so I'm off to Lowe's! Thanks! I think this will work well in the angle iron jig I'm building to both set the bevels and do the preliminary blade grinding.

    Okay, yeah that's pretty cool. I just started making a machete and wasn't sure how people did things. I actually wondered how I could make a bevel with tools. I have a 1x30 and 6x36 belt sander but neither have a table that i could utilize. At least this tool you made actually could be used for freehand. I'm still trying to figure out how I could make that bevel though.

    I remember making one of these when I first started making knives... Realized pretty quickly that this only works if you have a grinder with a nice, perfect platen. On a janky customized 2x42" like mine, the edges of the platen are funky and do not match from one side to the other.

    • @Pyle81
      @Pyle81 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very common statement. This told me to spend the $$$ and buy a reputable brand of grinder. Because the one I've been using (1"x 24") just isn't cutting it. Ive been told that the OBM 2"x72" complete unit will do the job im looking for.

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are actually pretty hard but yeah I've thought about using hardened steel.

    • @PashkaTLT
      @PashkaTLT ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theriversexperience9383 You're right, I did this yesterday, and they are not soft, not as hard as a file for example, but not too bad! I scratched the bracket with a file and it gets scratched less than unhardened steel. I bought a bracket at home depot for $3-4, cut it in half, bought 2 bolts & 2 nuts. The total price was about $5 :) And they sell these things on Amazon for $120. I understand, there's different quality, but still, $120 is insane!

    Does this rely on the edge of the platen and the edge of the best being identical on both the left and right hand sides? If you are registering the jig against the edge of the platen but the belt is tracking more to one side or the other then wont you get different plunge lines on one side of the belt to the other?

      Make sure that you're using light pressure when grinding. Let the belts do their job. Also, make sure that you lock your elbows and pivet with your hips. If you watch my last video, I explain how to correct bevel inconsistencies.

    What do you make you pre made patters out of? The ones hanging in the background of your videos? Is it wood?

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The patterns in the background are made out of wood. Allows me to get the knife in my hands and see how it feels. I then can make adjustments and play with bevels some too before I make it out of metal.

    Heyup! Is there any Englishmen/ladies still living in England, who knows where the equivalent shop/store to Home Depot or Lowe's is? Going along miles of shelving being able to pick out what you need is much easier than asking the spotty oike at the counter 'Do you have...Have you got?' Especially if you don't really know the correct terminology or sizes for what you're looking for! Also, sometimes you change your mind for what you originally went in for.

    Freehanding plunge lines isnt too hard actually. Start with you off hand, grind your bevel, and when you go to the other side, position the blade so that when you look down, the plunge you have already ground is pointing straight down, this means you have the same plunge angle on both sides.

    • @theriversexperience9383
