Aside from Olympus, all the KH worlds had this winding sort of level design where rooms had multiple entrances and exits and it was easy to get lost. It really felt like you were exploring an unknown world instead of just going from room to room. Wish the future games in this series kept this focus on exploration.

I agree that Wonderland is one of the best worlds in Kingdom Hearts. Its nonsensical nature plays perfectly with Sora's initial venture into the unknown. Also on the topic of design I'm fairly certain that the world was designed to be akin to a pop-up book as you push and pull objects to find new things. An excellent deep dive nonetheless!

I’ve never once thought about it, but I think I agree with Wonderland being the mechanical peak of Kingdom Hearts world design. It’s basically the only world in the series designed first and foremost around being an interesting video game level, rather than telling a story. It’s fueled mainly by the pure vibes of Alice in Wonderland rather than specific plot beats or setpieces from the movie. The only other world that seems designed for gameplay first is Olympus, which allowed the devs to include diegetic optional tournaments for fairly easy extra content, but the design is obviously much less elaborate there. Most other worlds are built as a way to get players from one cutscene, setpiece, or boss fight to another.

Couldn't help but bring up the small oddity in the cutscene at 30:24, where the unusual camera placement causes the doorway's texture on the left and right to be seen in a bit of a noclip situation, if that makes sense. I think it's mostly due to the increased aspect ratio of modern ports, that definitely wasn't meant to be seen

Lot of neat details and fun things I didn't know about or actually bothered looking for in the 20+ years of playing, but that's what makes it fun to see. My favorite detail, because it's one I never actually bothered to keep track of, is that the cage gets lower every time you hit the tower. That's cool.
What isn't are the Donald and Goofy nickname jokes or rather how many there were in almost rapid fire succession. They pretty much wore out their welcome around the fourth time you did it. It's not that I didn't find them amusing, for the first few I did, it's more that the amount of them within such a short space of time made them more tiring than funny.
Edit: I also will add that I might have heard it more than you did actually did it. But it certainly seemed like a lot so that's why I had to mention.

I tried finding the source where I heard it first but had no luck, perhaps you'll be more successful than I was, but I remember learning not too long ago about some aspects of the development of the original Kingdom Hearts and one element that jumped out for me was that they mentioned that the initial idea for the worlds was that they were all like set pieces inside studios (or something like that), but that idea was later scrapped. The only reason I remember it is because it served as a possible explanation as to Wonderland's weird world design. Wish I had more information about that than just a vague memory of learning it from some unspecified place.

Love the video but with one disagreement. Mechanically Wonderland is the most confusing world. I can’t tell you how many times I got stuck playing this as a kid. For example, the prompt to push in the bed in the bizarre room is very easy to miss. This has been reinforced recently watching my wife’s frustration playing through this world for the first time. It’s been bad enough that she rage quit the boss and I don’t know if she is going to go back to the game, which is a shame.

When it comes to trying to respect the World Order, the obvious gaping hole in the argument is that the Heartless are not part of each world's natural course of events - at least not as we encounter them in the game, where they're being manipulated and controlled by outside forces, so doing nothing isn't allowing things to unfold as they "should" anyway.
On a separate note, while it's certainly possible that magic damage is calculated using Euler's number, I suspect Euler doesn't get a look in internally. Looking at the formulae produced, e^-0.173 is (to within rounding errors) 2^-0.25, which means the formula can be rewritten as A+B*2^((m-d)/4) except Thunder replaces the m with 2m.
Of course, it's also possible that rather than performing the calculation every time, the game simply uses a lookup table based on that calculation - you'd only need as many entries as possible values for m-d (2m-d for Thunder).

Ok, I must somewhat critique you regarding 31:53
While I know, or at least hope, that the example shown is very exaggerated, it paints a faulty picture of the capabilities of party members in this game, be it D&G or any of the guests.
KH1 is, in my experience, the absolute pinnacle of their potential if you want to really work with them, which comes from having fully finished playthroughs of 1 and 3 where Sora's only allowed task is to finish boss fights. Tried it in 2 as well, but that game has different mechanics that didn't support the "My Friends Are My Power" run, so alas.
As the clip here shows, Trickmaster, and by extension all bosses, will swing for Sora with almost all of their targeted strikes, so you going in and out, baiting strikes to dodge while Donald was stuck in a revive loop in the middle is why he had no chance and the loop happened. If you want to have your party members last longer on the field, Sora has to be the diversion in boss fights, directing the attacks away from them somewhat so they can get to work.
And work they do! I noticed a severe lack in the boss bio of mentioning that Goofy's Rocket ability also has that same stunning effect on Trickmaster that Thunder spells do, and given it's upward trajectory and early access, it's likely designed for fights like these in the early game.
Also, I can't overstate enough the importance of customizing your allies, both their AI and their equipment. You may have said that "all stat boosts go to Sora, no question", but I say that, due to Strength caps for each boss and Sora's potent arsenal, there's more choice that can go behind stat boosts beyond going "dibs" every time. Programming your allies in a deliberate manner is also important. Goofy especially, his arguably best normal move, where he holds his shield forward and charges, is under "Defensive Maneuvers", surprisingly, so adjusting for that and giving him one of the bigger shield models, which improve his Recoil value, as well as Strength boosting accessories make him a force to be reckoned with, ESPECIALLY in the late game. Same with Donald, or other casters later. Knowing which spells are managed by which behavior in the Customize menu is huge in planning ahead, and, formulae of madness aside, it's still obvious that more MP = better results, no question, so not just Sora should have access to MP-boosting gear. Not just Donald, either, guests can really benefit, too. And on the subject of Donald, the duck has a Strength build in him, too, and it is truly hilarious to see him two-shot certain end-game Heartless with minimal effort.
TL;DR, all this is to say that KH1 allies have the best potential in them, if you just work with it. Of course they'll get KO'ed often in the line of fire in boss fights, but it's up to the player to make sure that doesn't happen.
Great videos, I'm just very passionate about this topic in particular. Keep them coming!

    • @ultima10101

Quick addendum: one of the main reasons why KH1 is the best when it comes to your allies is due to the sheer control the player has over their targeting behavior on a moment-to-moment basis, as simple as it may be. Being able to press Triangle and just point at your locked-on target to have your team focus that one, or call them to you with no active lock-on present, is huge for battlefield tactics, especially when combined with the aforementioned fact that bosses focus exclusively on Sora. Non-bosses can change their attention to your allies, of course, and maybe, sometimes, that's exactly what you need.

4*(MP-1)+20 can be simplified to 4*MP+16, you know.

For what it's worth, adding the clips from the movies is worth the effort for me.

I know you mostly don't cover glitches, but there's one in Wonderland that's really entertaining. First, when you enter the court, you save and make a backup save just in case. Then you enter the Lotus Room and see the initial cutscene with Cheshire Cat. After that, you open the journal, exit out, and go back into the court. When you talk to the cards and other NPCs, they spit out a bunch of garbled text. Talking to one of the cards gives you "A very merry unbirthday to you." and Sora's response is "I'm tingling all over". This will cause a softlock, so that's why it's recommended to keep a backup save in case something goes wrong. Once you leave and come back I think it all goes back to normal. I did it and it was funny to see Alice talking with Sora and having nonsensical dialogue.

A weird video game thing to think about is I think this world is the most we see Sora eat and drink until KH3, I could be wrong but I'm not counting Roxas eating the ice cream

I feel like the "world order" thing was always just more of a meta-textual statement, that none of these properties would merge together at the end of the game for a giant war between disney characters or whatever, and we can see that's been true for the whole series; even the invented worlds like twilight town and hollow bastion tend to stay in their lane. I could be wrong but I'm guessing disney is very apprehensive about doing literal two-main-characters-at-once crossovers in a game where that's already happening each time with sora. The identity of both characters and their worlds get pretty diluted, but it also carries this unrestrained charm that's hard to come by in any other game but perhaps super smash brothers. Fitting that toy story was added to kh3 when one of the central draws of crossover media is getting to open up the toy box and play with all your disney and final fantasy dolls at the same time.

havnt tested it in recent years to remember if it's in FM but i know for a fact at least in vanilla kh the chest in the initial drop will change depending on progression in the story. It's one of the softest ff6 references in the series when you are in the town of Narshe you can get like 5 chests that all become better items if you leave them in the early game.

That's true of every chest in the game. They all have 3 tiers to them
