Hey would you guys ever consider making a date night video of Untitled Goose Game? I think you guys would get a kick out of that and I'd love to watch that.
If you do 358 2 Days, they have a fan made mod that lets you play on pc with a controller thats really good. Just in case you don't want to track down the DS game lol
For me it's hard to say. The card system was made with the GBA in mind, and it just seems out of place aesthetically in Re:CoM. But there are additions in the remake that I greatly appreciate, such as Duels and Gliding. Like I don't feel as pressured to master my deck building to break enemy attacks if I have more movement options to evade theme. But that's just me.
Something to realise: I played the original when it came out, and my young teenage brain was blown away by the visuals the GBA could produce. Having any voice lines coming out of the GBA while a few years earlier we were absolutely amazed by having any colour on a handheld, it was a big thing. I loved the card combat and since we were years away from KH2, it was great to get any story in the meantime, confusing as it was.
I was and still am blown away they managed to get a pre rendered scene for the opening that looked like a heavily compressed scene out of the first game on the GBA. Didn't even look half as compressed as those GBA carts with episodes of Dragonball or SpongeBob on them
I’d never actually seen the GBA version but it looks way more charming than the remake. Yeah the remake had cool features, but that pixel art is just way too good.
I played the remake of chain of memories for the first time about 2 months ago and I'll be honest it's the worst KH game I've played, it was a slog all the way through, I've heard the original was much better atleast but it's not in the collection
I played the original GBA version and not the remake: it was serviceable. Sora going through all the worlds again was so boring though and certain boss fights as riku were unfair since you couldn’t pick your deck. But it played. Hearing simple and clean through a gba speaker was kind of neat.
Yeah. I tried playing the remake for a few worlds until I decided to give up on after the first few worlds (Traverse Town and Wonderland). I didn't really like playing Re:Chains so I watched cutscenes on TH-cam instead. I never had the GBA version but seeing gameplay of it, I feel like I would enjoy the card game mechanics more on GBA than I would in Re:Chain.
33:55 A game called TWEWY (The World Ends With You) might be something you would enjoy, its a Action RPG/Deck Building for the DS (and Switch), it was even planed to be a chain of memories sequel before it became it's own thing
If you play the switch version, it has co op with each person using a single joycon. People hate on the controls but it feels very much like a Wii game and if you view it through that lens it becomes extremely fun
Not to mention they are key players to Dream Drop Distance, and Neo:Twewy will very likely be a core part of KH4 what with Sora coming to Shibuya and being essentially invisible to regular people while fighting the Heartless
the "side by side" in unison was actually so sweet i'll be honest i wasn't sure if i was gonna watch the whole video when i clicked on it but i'm so sold on the dynamic already
I actually found the GBA cartridge for sale at my local store for a very, very good price (suspiciously so). I was elated to see the game worked perfectly but there was one problem: both save files were filled and completed. Dozens of hours of effort would be deleted if I started a new game. I decided to keep that person's memories intact, and I'd play on an emulator handheld. They'll be safe with me.
Probably my biggest gripe with the GBA version. I wish there was a way to mod the game on DS or PC emulation to have X or Y stock and use Sleights. Maybe have the other button as a dedicated Dodge Roll button, or "discard Sleighted cards".
I think it's important to also say at the end of KH2 Namine talks about her promise to Sora it refering to the ending of this game, not the promise she made with Roxas.
When Namine’s all ghostlike? And Roxas ghosts out of Sora’s body? Isn’t she referring to both? Cause Roxas responds in confirmation to her saying that.

Good luck to everyone then, because I'm playing the whole saga and I'm currently on DDD and... yeah, Days became one of my most hated games in the saga for me gameplay wise. it simply drags way too much and overstays it's welcome.
@@springdeerling7866 It's understandable, KH is a magical experience as a child no matter the entry. and I also like it story wise, it simply becomes too repetitive after a certain point, even more for a person that likes to unlock as much stuff as possible during main gameplay. Also, if you aren't that deep into your playthrough, I would recommend the Melon mod for Days, really, the best way to play it nowadays.
Re:Ku is genius. Also I'm genuinely curious how she'll handle BBS, Re:Coded, or DDD. Side note: Re:Coded has the best command deck while overall being the easiest command deck game so if you need the gameplay decide which she'll play first, there's my opinion
honestly, I feel like the style of the game just works better as an on-the-go gba game rather than a console one. Like the deck mechanics and flow of combat encounters makes more sense as a series of play a little shut it off and then play a little more later, sorta like 365/2 days. If you try to go through days' entire story all in one sitting it's stiff and unpleasant, but if it's spread out then it helps connect you to Roxas even more as it feels like you're going through these daily jobs with him. chain of memories is much the same, splitting it up over daily sessions where you plow through a world and then coming back to it to play another world while you're on the go enhances the experience. Also, the limited pixel graphics match the limited card focused combat. It makes it optimal to build the deck around combos and sleights ahead of time to make normal fights much quicker rather than just throwing the strongest cards all together and running out because you didn't prepare for your cards all getting spent.
I wished the Game 358/2 Days would get the same treatment. This Game was the first I shed tears after the final battle. It is a shame they made a Movie of it!
I remember as a kid I had no idea what I was doing with the card system, and I somehow managed to brute force my way to victory after many hours of grinding to turn cards to gold and slate spamming until I couldn't because I didn't understand the deck building enough. I came back when I was a teenager and finished up that save and didn't *really* learn how to play the game until I did the Riku story, (which funnily enough, my brother who was more into the series than me, and modern day loves deck building games, never bothered to got to) and after that I decided to start the regular game over since I basically just did the last 2 or 3 worlds, and absolutely loved it lol
A couple things you didn't mention when explaining the cards: First off, when the number on the card is orange, it means it is a Premium Card, which has a lower Card Point cost than a normal card, but it cannot be reloaded unless you use an Item Card (like an elixir) so it's highly recommended to set those as the first one in a Sleight, since the first card doesn't reload anyway. the other thing you didn't mention is the stats of the Keyblade cards. Sora only does a 3-hit combo both on ground and in the air, and each hit of the combo is different, I think it goes Slash--Thrust--Combo Finish. In the GBA version im not sure if it's the same, but that's how it is in Re:CoM, so the best way to set up your Keyblade cards in the deck, if you arent abusing Sleights, is to sort them by the highest grade for every part of the combo
funny enough, im pretty sure premium cards wouldn't disappear, if you used them in the middle or end of a sleight. So if you had a special card, but only as premium version, you could use them more than once, if you placed them mid sleight. If one were sleight mashing anyway, it was better to start of with 2 premium cards, since only the first one would disappear and you would also start with a premium card in the 2 rotation of the deck.
Thank you! I have always been putting the GBA one on such a pedestal. Played on correct hardware, the card system on the gba feels fantastic compared to on a 3d format. A dream the gba art fits amazingly.
thank you for breaking down the card mechanics!! i really only knew about the card values and sleights but none of my friends have ever explained to me anything past that 😂 (but tbf i never bothered to look into it further)
The ladder length is a double-edged sword concept. The longer it is sure it fits thematically but after the first two ladders you get it. You're climbing Castle Oblivion. The Remake having them shorter just helps finish the levels faster. You already beat the boss so why does it have to linger any longer? 18:04 Yeah that was the issue with the system really. You had endgame level spells like Firaga and Blizzaga immediately from the start. Which is why the Speedruns for CoM are just about farming Blizzards and Fires. Then blitzing through the game
This is perfect timing! I just finished RE: last week! It's one of my favorites now. I love the strategy. You are correct… once you accomplish the learning curve, the game is a cakewalk.
Kingdom Hearts ReChain of Memories is good for what it is...but Chain of Memories is a game that was made by pure genius at coding. They were able to fit not only a song like Simple and Clean (at the cost of sounding like crap) but also FMVs on a portable SNES.
I never experimented with the sleights so I had no clue that Lethal Frame even existed. I spent literal hours fighting Re:ku. I got so good at dodging and countering that I beat Larxene in two tries and every fight afterwards in one. I love this game
I don't know of many who are crazy enough to go through both games simultaneously. Liam is the only other person I know of. Can't wait for the 358 video and for you to learn more about "the cooler Sora".
ReCoM did a really good job adding duels and quick breaks to Riku's combat, it feels much more reflex based and exciting, specially after so long playing as Sora. When replaying the game I like to change characters after completing a floor to mox things up.
I really need to give the GBA version a try some day. It genuinely seems a lot more up my alley than what I experienced with Re:CoM in the HD collection.
I first got into Kingdom Hearts because a Let's Player I liked played the first one. I wanted to play Chain of Memories, but I knew he'd do an LP of it soon and didn't want to spoil it, so I played the GBA version. Getting to see them both side by side was really enjoyable for me, and looks like it was enjoyable for you guys too! I absolutely adore the spritework in GBA Chain of Memories, and unfortunately the DS games look like absolute crap in comparison lol. Can't wait to see you guys play (or perhaps just watch) 358/2!
I think the original game was really impressive for it's time, since they basically recreated KH1 on a GBA cartridge. That said, i think Re:Com is more beginner friendly since some of the bossfights were brutal on GBA (the last Repliku fight for example). Overall i'd recommend Re:Com for somebody that just wants to learn the story, while the original is really fun if you're looking for a challenge.
I swear to God I must have been the only person on the planet who played Kingdom hearts 1 then Kingdom hearts chain of memories then Kingdom hearts 2 as they were released. Kingdom hearts chain of memories was my most played game followed by Kingdom hearts 2.
This is such a cool concept! A side by side experience of the og game and the remake is so awesome! I'm thinking her playing og re4 while you play remake re4 in the same format??
I don't know what this "authentic experience" I keep hear everyone talking about is? I grew up with Chain of Memories on my GBA years before I played Kingdom Hearts 2. At least until Jason "borrowed" my copy and moved away. (Don't think I don't still remember that, Jason! Where's my copy of Chain of Memories, Jason?)
Chain is a complicated game for me cause of the GBA/Remake split. GBA is the simple part: I tried it but never got around to finishing Sora's playthrough cause I was too young to appreciate it. (nowadays I look back somewhat fondly though) Remake in my book was the franchise's original sin (as the Osaka Staff's first KH game, it was the craddle of "Floaty" gameplay), also back in the PS3 collection I ended up writing an entire Trophy Guide for Re:CoM out of pure spite. (And no, the drop rates were bad but they were not the worst offender, that "honor" goes to the max level trophies, grinding is awful in this game) Your video does a good job maintaining the Tokyo Agenda (that is to say, it's fair and for the most part impartial) but I wanna ask you to play the DS games as opposed to just watching them. Don't let them erase the past...
This is such a crazy-fun idea!!! I still want the GBA version of CoM. I saw it once in middle school when a friend was playing it during lunch time. I was already a massive KH fanboy but it was still so new that I couldn't have imagined the impact it would eventually have on my life as I got older. Trying the RE:CoM version almost a dozen times since the HD collection first released on PS3, I can't. I just can't. I've played and beaten every single KH game that's available, even the DS versions of Days and RE:Coded, and for some reason RE:CoM is the only game I literally refuse to keep pounding away at. I hate it. I hope I get that CoM cart one day! This was fun!!
Here's an idea for a co-op experiment: emulating the DS version of The World Ends With You. Just connect a controller, and one of you controls Neku with touch controls, and the other controls his partner with the d-pad
I actually just finished my first playthrough of the GBA version. Both games are great. Missed opportunity to have both of you play the GBA version and then battle.
Chain of Memories was my first gamer of the series when I was 12 🤣 and oh boi, was i confused at first, but it was such an interesting game, that i wanted to play the other ones as well... And I did play all of them and to this day (and after 20 years) its my favorite Video game Franchise ever ❤
Me too lol! I was in middle school when I randomly saw a kid playing chain of memories on their gba and I had no idea what Kingdom Hearts was even at that point. Being a Nintendo fan only as a kid, I was very glad chain of memories is what got me into the series at all. ^_^
Naah, one deck needed. Sonic Blade XD I believe if you stack 6, 7 then 8, you get 3 goes of your deck before you're out, plenty of time to finish any fight, even bosses XD And also premium your first card in the sleight so it costs less since it's going away anyway.
In CoM/Re:CoM, there are two ways of playing it. The honest and most engaging way by building a deck respecting the card's actual stats (shown in the diary) for max damage on combos and not too much cheese with Sleights, but, still having them available. And the "I simply don't care" way by converting all your cards in your deck into premiums and stock up to as many sleights as possible. I did both and, tbh, the former is the most fun you can have since- it isn't that hard to break CoM...
I've watched quite a bit of your backlog now, and I have 2 game recommendations, The World Ends With You, and Shovel Knight Co-Op. TWEWY has bottle cap collecting and leveling, as well as a fashion system to really get lost in. Your companion also has a cute stuffed animal, all of which seems like it would be her kind of game. In SK, I think she'd have more fun as Player 2 where you get a wider variety of tools to choose from, and the shenanigans you two could get into while in coop would be very entertaining.
I'm sorry but when she said the menu just made her mind go blink I couldn't help remember the running joke in SAO abridged where the girls all have trouble with the menu in the game XD
I've been watching a couple of let's players also experiencing KH for the first time with the HD Remix. One experience that I think is sort of "lost" in the current era of KH is the impact of [Ansem's] first reveal in KH2's prologue. The shock of his reveal as a twist is made more impactful since the change in VA's between 1 and 2, but if you're following in release order with Remind, that twist doesn't feel that shocking coming of of Reverse/Rebirth going into KH2 since it's the same voice coming from the hood.
I remember playing this game on gba without any knowledge at all of kingdom hearts in the first place and getting softlocked everytime by time I got to the end of the set of kingdoms because I didn't have a high enough card to get through the door. I was a confusion child that eventually ditched the game for something I understood... pokemon.
I feel like you should have done it the other way around where she played the GBA version and you played the FM version. She would have had an easier time because she wouldn't have had to deal with the camera at the same time as the card and the unique art would have been the draw. Also the "authentic experience" is the GBA game before KH2 because it came out a whole year earlier
I had and beat Chain of Memories on GBA as a kid. Something terrifying to me as a man now in my 30's is that I don't remember anything whatsoever about the story of the game, but I have a deep-seated hatred for Marluxia. Something about either his actions in the game or his boss fight has transcended my ability to remember it and embedded itself in an entirely different part of my brain and that's so incredibly thematically appropriate in a way.
I loved using Lethal Frame! And I agree Riku had a cooler plot but it wasn’t totally complete feeling. I never played the GBA version so it was nice seeing what I missed out on.
I remember playing Chain of Memories as a kid and I ran out of cards after the Maleficent boss fight and I couldn’t progress in the game and I was so heartbroken because I had already saved which meant I would have had to start the whole game all over again and I couldn’t bring myself to do it so I never finished the game

23:18 THAT part right there is just so adorable and sweet.
Thankfully fans can do *both* now that 358 Days Melon Mix lets you play the original but remastered with the HD Cutscene movies added in-game! :D
Making her play 358 Days MELON MIX next for the gameplay with in-game 1.5 ReMix HD Cutscenes included?
I think the original game was really impressive for it's time, since they basically recreated KH1 on a GBA cartridge. That said, i think Re:Com is more beginner friendly since some of the bossfights were brutal on GBA (the last Repliku fight for example). Overall i'd recommend Re:Com for somebody that just wants to learn the story, while the original is really fun if you're looking for a challenge.
22:07 so she is just DIO now
ZA Warudo!
ZA WARUUUDOOOOOO!!!
oh no, Xantyr has appeared! she needs to complete her discovery of identity in the Days game!! (pls pls pls play Days)
I swear to God I must have been the only person on the planet who played Kingdom hearts 1 then Kingdom hearts chain of memories then Kingdom hearts 2 as they were released. Kingdom hearts chain of memories was my most played game followed by Kingdom hearts 2.
I also played in this order, but it's only because I found out that this is the order the story goes lol
This is such a cool concept! A side by side experience of the og game and the remake is so awesome!
I'm thinking her playing og re4 while you play remake re4 in the same format??
This is the very first video I’ve seen from you guys, and I can already tell I love Taryn. She’s so relatable. 😂
next do "358/2 days" for Axel's backstory
I don't know what this "authentic experience" I keep hear everyone talking about is? I grew up with Chain of Memories on my GBA years before I played Kingdom Hearts 2. At least until Jason "borrowed" my copy and moved away. (Don't think I don't still remember that, Jason! Where's my copy of Chain of Memories, Jason?)
Chain is a complicated game for me cause of the GBA/Remake split.
GBA is the simple part: I tried it but never got around to finishing Sora's playthrough cause I was too young to appreciate it. (nowadays I look back somewhat fondly though)
Remake in my book was the franchise's original sin (as the Osaka Staff's first KH game, it was the craddle of "Floaty" gameplay), also back in the PS3 collection I ended up writing an entire Trophy Guide for Re:CoM out of pure spite. (And no, the drop rates were bad but they were not the worst offender, that "honor" goes to the max level trophies, grinding is awful in this game)
Your video does a good job maintaining the Tokyo Agenda (that is to say, it's fair and for the most part impartial) but I wanna ask you to play the DS games as opposed to just watching them.
Don't let them erase the past...
Really cool! You two playing alongside each other reminds me of KH dream drop distance :3
Aw, I wanted to see Taryn react to the GBA final boss (SUBMIT SUBMIT SUBMIT!)
I actually liked Re:CoM more, since I could dodge easier in 3D than in 2D.
I can already see the future emotional damage when the Unchained X reference is shown to her in the final Marluxia boss fight.
I actually just finished my first playthrough of the GBA version. Both games are great.
Missed opportunity to have both of you play the GBA version and then battle.
Chain of Memories was my first gamer of the series when I was 12 🤣
and oh boi, was i confused at first, but it was such an interesting game, that i wanted to play the other ones as well...
Glad to see the return of Nick. Y’all are good together.
14:45 I love/hate this game as much as I love/hate Gwet. And I never put the two together until this music queue. WELL DONE!!!
I remember my first GBA Version Playthrough that finished with a Lv 93 Sora and a Deck Full of 9 Clouds and some Cards to bring them back lmao
I can’t wait for the tears of 368/2 days to come
In CoM/Re:CoM, there are two ways of playing it.
Just wanted to say after watching a few vids you guys have definitely earned a sub with this one.
These videos are wholesome breaths of fresh air.
Last KH Game: Advertised Opera
This KH Game: Advertised VPN to protect Data.
Coincidence?
I'm sorry but when she said the menu just made her mind go blink I couldn't help remember the running joke in SAO abridged where the girls all have trouble with the menu in the game XD
What a cool idea! I'm only a few minutes in, and I love the editing and composition a lot.
I was a confusion child that eventually ditched the game for something I understood... pokemon.
"Made my girlfriend play silent hill remake" would be really cool to see😊
I feel like you should have done it the other way around where she played the GBA version and you played the FM version. She would have had an easier time because she wouldn't have had to deal with the camera at the same time as the card and the unique art would have been the draw.
Also the "authentic experience" is the GBA game before KH2 because it came out a whole year earlier
her reaction to putting all of the story beats together with the kh2 intro is totally how I reacted when I was 15 lol.
Ok this is pretty sweet, like what a fun idea for a video!
Chain of memories was my first kingdom hearts game then one then two
15:00 Hey! Be grateful. With Donald's lack of healing being memed to heck, the little guy is probably just making up for it...
The name Re:Ku is high-key genius. I laughed so hard, I’m gonna use that instead of Repliku from now on!
God seeing this game and hearing the traverse town music; takes me back
A channel whose whole identity is "Gamer with a girlfriend."
I still can't believe such a thing is possible.
I love how saturated the colors are in the gba version. It makes the remake look so dull.
I hope they play 358/2 days. Roxas story deserves to be experience with both gameplay and cutscenes. Rather than just cutscenes.
I love Kh and Card games so chain of memories wasn't even that bad.
This game also has really good character development for sora.
Really good character dev for Sora... that he 100% forgets 😂
True lol
Looking forward to the heartbreak of Days and Birth by Sleep.
If your personalities wasnt enough to get me to subscribe, your music choice in the background definitely is! So many great music choices.
18:27 Roar of Dedede jumpscare
Taryntar and Noicky side by side vs Dopelku and Mar Luck See Ya?!? YES PLEASE
This killed me 😆
Taryn as a business woman is adorable.
They do the best ad breaks 😄
4:37 to skip mid-roll
Cant wait for the reactions to 358/2
I had and beat Chain of Memories on GBA as a kid. Something terrifying to me as a man now in my 30's is that I don't remember anything whatsoever about the story of the game, but I have a deep-seated hatred for Marluxia. Something about either his actions in the game or his boss fight has transcended my ability to remember it and embedded itself in an entirely different part of my brain and that's so incredibly thematically appropriate in a way.
marluxia,probably: "say goodbye to exoddia!"
Surprised you didn’t mention that the keyblade card Types DO do more damage depending on where you place them in your deck when you string combos
My first KH game. Borrowed from my cousin
Also, the quality of Simple and Clean on GBA is incredible.
i love how she pops off after all the bosses. big relate
Still a long road before Kingdom Hearts 3
