    That took me back . I was taken out to Koonalda station homestead by one of the sons , Neil I think , he introduced me to his father I think . Where you filmed the wood stove with the kettle on the corner was where he kept a can of Southwark beer, Hot beer . I worked at the road construction camp in 75 . Our camp water was carted from Koonalda . I drove a cat 140 grader on the new road . For keeping the grade shape/slope I made use of that flat horizon lined up with the straight window ledge .No digital electronics . Our road was so straight and boring I kept forgetting what that black round thing I`d been hanging onto all day was for ? Based at our camp we had a cessna and the bush pilot Cyril would fly us all around looking for blowholes . Yes we did find some, and on one we made a rope ladder with road pegs .It was deep and peaceful .I went down alone . I fell asleep in the dark tunnel . Every day was an adventure .

    This is certainly one of your best clips, very informative and a treat to watch.
    I was really surprised when you showed the picture of Ivy Tanks, I first pulled fuel from there in 1969 via a hand pump. The pump in the far right of your picture, which is one of those you pump first to fill the glass cylinder, then gravity feed to your vehicle was the only one with fuel on that trip. I had to stop at every fuel place as I was on a Vespa motor scooter and carried extra fuel in a kerosene tin between my legs on the floor. I've done around 35 trips across the Nullarbor, strangely enough I'm looking forward to doing another one, always something different encountered.
    Love your almost laughing reference to interest in air pressure, from previous videos. The real problem is that most viewers don't quite understand the weight factor of a light truck, let alone one fitted with super singles; which is another ball game. Great to get your axle weights as well as your tyre pressures and why you are setting them at those pressures. You are on the limit............................
    The references by some people that everyone pretty much traversed this road in normal 4x2 vehicles is correct, but the older vehicles were designed differently with longevity over interesting terrain at reasonable speeds as a given. Today the standard automobile, in general, is really not suited to much more than gravel roads, so it is a little unfair. That said, many people doing interesting roads over a longer time frame, usually ran a 3 or 3½ ton truck and often built something on the back to live in. The old man did this in the fifties with our family, his only problem was he bought an Austin truck; reliability was not its best aspect.
    When you eventually get across to WA and you pass through Balladonia, there may still be the original motel/cabin building. I was on the team in 1974 digging out the foundations for the new improved fuel stops across the Nullarbor. There was excitement and trepidation at what would happen when the "Bitch" (bitumen surface) in the South Australian section was completed.
    As for car and truck wrecks, there were heaps of broken vehicles in various states of smashed up and just broken down bodies all over the place. Essentially if something was there long enough other travellers would strip what they could to get their own vehicles repaired and running again.
    The south road from Pt Augusta to Alice Springs was a similar situation, wrecks everywhere and stripping of wrecked vehicles to get broken down ones running again. The police used to say, "don't leave your vehicle if you break down, you'll be doomed if you do". Well that was all and good, but in reality, one never left a broken down vehicle as when you came back there wouldn't be too much left.
    Government tanks were erected along the route across the Nullarbor, they were sometimes topped up during summer by the authorities, while in the cooler months the quite large corrugated iron roofing designed to collect water for the tanks, usually collected plenty of water. People used to work out many of their stops to camp at the government tanks.
    If you get to Norseman and head south, then take the first road (was a track in the 70's) to Peak Charles. At the forked junction, you can either take the Peak Charles track, or head west south west, then you will travel in a dead straight line for 88 km's then you come to a 45º right corner. On your left, were a couple of government tanks for travellers. Nice campsite. From there not too hard and quite easy once you get to the rabbit fence and head towards Newdegate followed by a trip across Lake Grace and if there is water in it, it looks wonderful as the road goes straight through the lake.

    • @brucelawrence123
      @brucelawrence123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't be Ivy Tanks as the place was demolished when the new road went in. All that is there is a chimney and car wrecks. The owner wasn't allowed to build on the new road so he spat it and leveled every thing. I understand to get there you have to leave the sealed road and take a track to the old road.

    • @allanhugh2044
      @allanhugh2044 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brucelawrence123 I think you may have misread my posting slightly. At 32:54 there is a picture shown of Ivy Tanks, which I last remember being almost exactly like that in 1974, when I did 4 crossings of the Nullarbor. During those trips there were plenty of sections that were bitumenised, but closed off. One used the old road which, within reason, travelled alongside much of the new bitumen sections, but not always.
      My next trip across the Nullarbor was in 1977 (4 crossings again) bitumen all the way, I distinctly remember looking out for Ivy Tanks but never came across it. I always wondered why it closed down, now I know 44 years later.

    Did this trip several times prior to 1974 and those tanks used to have roofs over them to collect the water. Ivy Tanks was one of those but not sure where it was that you stopped. The old road was very wide and so wide pretty much four semis could be parked across it. In the wet it was very treacherous as the pot holes became submerged and difficult to spot. It was a real adventure back in those days.

    That was fantastic thanks. As far as I could tell, in the Koonalda car museum, there was not one 4WD !!. Back in the very early 60's, I knew a little English Gentleman, who drove an Austin A30 from Mount Gambier in South Australia, to Perth and return, and it would have been along that very road. Just a trip from the Mount to Adelaide in those days would have been a huge undertaking for him. Adding to the story, in his enthusiasm to pack what little space he had, with what he considered necessities, he'd omitted to pack the spare wheel, and it was only when he got back home, that he discovered it. Turns out that he didn't need it anyway !!. An amazing effort, and a tribute to his resolve.
    Thanks again. Is the discovered rattle in the next video ??. Take care and stay safe, Cheers.

    Goog Vidio boys but the road looks pretty cruisey to what I remember I went a cross there when I was 10 in 1965 with my dad mum and sister 2 younger brother 6 plu 2 older brothers 14 and 16 in an old EJ station wagon it was sky blue ok as a trailer there where millions of rabbits every were thousand of car bodies from start till end may be a car smile if not less
    We were driving along one day and we saw this wheel come rolling past us dad said what the bloody he'll and be for he finished that sentence the bloody trailer hit the ground and dug it's self into the HWY .so we dragged it to the side of the HWY walked about 100 YDS found a old Holden wreck pulled of the bearing off one side put them on trailer and a way we went ..plenty of more stories . But enough for noe

      Gday Keith,
      We have now had plenty of old stories about this road shared with us, and we love it. There was only a few car wrecks on the road and hardly any rabbits, when we went through.
      Cheers,
      Karl

    Another great video, keep up the great work. Good to see the non touristy place. Please don’t get to popular and end up with a heap of sponsors that then ruin your videos because you spend all your time promoting their product.

    • @nowhereboundtouring
      @nowhereboundtouring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tony, we don't plan on sprucking stuff. We are happy on our adventures. Karl and I are too pig headed to be told what to put in our video's etc. So no fear, you will always get the honest us.
      If given the opportunity for sponsorship, we would make seperate videos that would be correctly titled. But I don't think you have to fear us getting to popular 😂😂😂😂
      Glad you enjoy our trips Cheers Katty

    Bit of “flex” going on here. How many other Aussies could afford a rig like that? No me certainly. How many 100’s of thousands of dollars?
    Good video none the less. Not realistic for most people though.

    • @nowhereboundtouring
      @nowhereboundtouring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey surprisingly you will find that our set up costs less than all the Landcruisers you see getting around. The trucks are everywhere across Australia we are just one of the only ones sharing our journey and rig capabilities on TH-cam. The truck and the caravan are all we own and is our home. We sold everything to have this.
