Marx guy here, I just finished shoehorning in a Marx D/R motor into a Flyer prewar 1939 #420 shell. She appears externally stock but inside a lot of cutting and shaving was required. I must say this project tried my patience. SHOEE!
Neat project, I have a bunch of prewar flyer projects, only down side to having them is reproduction parts availability, im slowly seeing more stuff to fix them being made, some day if im patient and find enough parts enginrs I will have them all complete and running again. Watch out for broken zinc parts especially the wheels if you are looking at buying one to restore. Thanks for the video!
Jason Rackawack thanks Jason! I’m pretty exclusively an S gauge guy, this clean up and maintenance job was done for a friend of mine. I think Doug Peck at Portlines does carry some of the pre war parts, and there are usually a few at train shows from time to time! Thank you for your comment and keep those trains running!
I have that exact engine. I am trying to verify if they normally make a buzzing noise when running caused by the magnetic reversing system. While yours was running around the track I thought I could hear the same noise. Other than the noise it runs fine. Thanks for any input.
Open frame three pole motors are by their nature noisey to some degree because they are ac motors.Don't compare them to today's dc can motors that run quietly. Those canmotors run on rectified and filtered dc and by nature are quiet in operation and in my not so humble opinion are superior to the AC motors used in earlier toy trains, today's technology has made it so.Three cheers for technology!!
A buddy of mine wants to set up the American Flyer train-set he had in his youth. He sent me the round-oval xformer for power cord replacement & possible winding repair. He's been working on his engine, as you show here (not sure if his matches yours) and is asking me questions I know little about. Are you on a MR message forum where he can join and possibly reach out to you / others with assorted questions about his MR stuff? Thanks!
Are Jayem you can always message me on TH-cam or you can email me at johnnyflyertrains@gmail.com. As you can tell from my videos I tend to focus on the S scale stuff, but I’d be happy to help point you in the right direction at a minimum.
That locomotive is built like a tank! that's a beautiful piece of workmanship and i like it!
