If any live album should be on that list. It should be that one. And Supertramp crime of the century should’ve been top 20. Keep up the good work thanks
This video inspired me to check the final album of Badfinger (with the original line up). John Heaton and others have given it good reviews. I'm going to stream it. I agree with other's about Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs.
Neil Young and Roxy Music are very high up on my list. Best songs, no albums: This Time Tomorrow - The Move. Walk On - Neil Young Louisianna 1927 - Randy Newman Listening can made one cry more than the flood. Hi Larry. Gordon Lightfoot Sundown was a classic from that year I think a lot of people know and love that one it definitely sold. I don't know where they got half of those on the list did people even buy them or play them on radio? and why are a lot of the ones people loved and bought the most at the bottom of the list
Over all, not such a terrible list, I see a lot of really awesome albums. Crime of the Century could be a bit higher, and personally, I would have a couple of other albums in my list. But there are just that many albums that you can squeeze into a top 74. I always see these lists as an inspiration to listen to the albums that you do not already know or that you haven't listened to in a long time. Really need to give Betty Davis and the Ohio Players a spin.
wow, Rolling Stone and I have the same #1. Glad On the Beach is getting its due, easily my favorite NY album My top 10 1. On the Beach - Neil Young 2. The Unicorn - Peter Grudzien (I'm a big fan of outsider music, not surprised this wasn't on the RS list but it's an all time favorite) 3. Radio City - Big Star 4. Here Come the Warm Jets - Brian Eno 5. Grievous Angel - Gram Parsons 6. New Skin for the Old Ceremony - Leonard Cohen 7. Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) - Brian Eno 8. Fear - John Cale 9. Pussy Cats - Harry Nilsson 10. Get Up With it - Miles Davis I also just got Kimono My House on vinyl and I think once I get fully aquainted with the album it could be on here
That was a decent list in my opinion. However I believe that the following albums should've been included. Queen - Queen II E.L.O. - Eldorado Rush - Rush Deep Purple - Burn Also I agree that Queen's Sheer Heart Attack should have been ranked higher 👍xxx.
Just last week I rated Neil Young & Genesis as my top 2 on your channel & happy to see Neil make it but Genesis to low. Big Star deserving of the high ranking. Decent list in general.
You might want to give Gram Parsons "Grievous Angel" a listen if you like beautiful harmonies. Emmylou Harris provides them here. Stunning. Every Brothers quality, if you like that stuff. I like Gene Clark too, but Gram's album was a step above. Released after he passed away. Missing.. "Dragon Fly". Jefferson Starship debut. No "Miracles" sounding tracks, just solid rock with some great guitar work.
My two favourite albums from 1974 are Eldorado (Electric Light Orchestra) which I expected to be on there somewhere, and Lost In A Dream by REO Speedwagon, which I didn't.
I was surprised that my favorite 74 album, NY Dolls, made the top 10. Also nice to see Richard Pryor on the list. Ron Wood's album has the best solo Stones song ever, Keef's lead vocal on Sure the One You Need.
My favorite didn’t make the list - Chicago VII. Their 4th (and last) time doing a double album and the end of their golden era. Their most adventurous offering and jazziest. I definitely recommend that you keep giving Chicago a chance, Larry. I don’t think their run from ‘69 to ‘74 is recognized enough. Who else comes out of the gate with 3 double albums, then follows up with a quadruple live album? Who else then follows that up with a single disc album without compromising their quality and creativity? Another single album the next year, before doing another double. Definitely a hard work ethic to top.
Now that I've seen the whole video, so many of these albums I have not heard at all, besides, I was 3 years old when all these came out. I would have loved to see Propaganda on here, but I knew it was a long shot.
Like your Sparks, I love Supertramp. I was glad to see it made it. Disappointing to not see any Three Dog Night. BTW Supertramp is my #1 favorite band with Steely Dan in 2nd.
Hi Larry. For what it's worth, 18 of the albums on your list are on Rolling Stone's list. I don't know what album should be considered "the best" for 1974. That being said, On The Beach is my favourite Neil Young album.
On The Beach was my Number 3. Late For The Sky was my Number 2, Caught Up by Millie Jackson was the Number 1 album of 1974! How Rolling Stone journalists can rank Betty Davis's very average funk above Millie Jackson's soul masterpiece is beyond me!

Parliament, the Meters, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, The Detroit Spinners! So much funk and soul. All that's missing is Earth Wind and Fire who I don't think had a huge album in 74.
Supertramp were really big here in Canada Larry and maybe still are but even though they were great I always found them a little to gimicky with their doinky keyboards,I would have preferred a more typical sounding piano on their songs and regarding the Stone's It's Only Rock N Roll I always thought the Stones were fantastic after a few drinks,a great band to drink to. Bob
That Moe Bandy album cover is on one of your Worst Album Covers videos. The late Betty Davis was married to Miles Davis for a bit. I've heard some of her music; she's a decent but mostly unsung R&B vocalist. The list is pretty much what you'd expect from Rolling Stone; favoring critical darlings over more commercial stuff and totally ignoring others. Little Feat's Feats Don't Fail Me Now should've been on the list somewhere. Even if Zeppelin had released an album in '74, RS probably would've at least ranked it very low or even ignored it altogether. If you liked Gene Clark's album or Mike Nesmith's stuff with his First National Band you'd probably like Gram Parsons too.
I believe Marvin Gaye's album "Let's Get It On" came out this year. Not too sure so you can let me know? But certainly I would have The O'jays album "Family Reunion" and The Isley Brothers "Live It Up" on that list.
@canadianstudmuffin I found it! And Marvin Gaye's album came out the year before, 1973. I was wrong by a year. And The O'jays album was a year later, 1975. The only one I was right on was the Isleys. SMH!
Really not a bad list - pretty good. What's missing? I'll give it a shot Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs Frank Zappa - Apostrophe Little Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now
Rolling Stone Magazine? Come on? This is a revised list! I again recommend the Red 1979 Red Album guide! It says... Black Sabbath - Pathetic Kate Bush- Sounds like a vacuum cleaner! Rush - Donald Duck on vocals! ACDC - Pathetic Years later the same person wrote a book on Black sabbath on how good they were 😂 David Bowie has no 5 star reviews at all! How this group of people and this awful publication got away with it for so long was always a mystery to me!
Nice to see Big Star, Linda Rondstadt and Sparks in the list, but The new York Dolls higher in the list than Queen? And Lennon's Walls and Bridges should be higher, that was a great album.
Not surprised they ignored Sparks for so long. Rolling Stone's sense of self-importance isn't earned in the slightest. At least there was no Beach Boys album in 1974 so I can't complain too much haha
Well, they got most of the important albums of 1974, only completely in the wrong order. Crime of the Century should be WAY higher. And so should Sparks. And they don't even have Lou Reed's Sally Can't Dance. But Linda Ronstadt is in there twice!
The best part of the video was your reaction when at #70.. 👍🏼😊 As for the list, as usual RS mag-rag, largely ignores heavy rock. No: Scorpions, Budgie, Judas Priest, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep, Montrose, Baker Gurvitz Army.. Prog albums are also mostly non-existent (those by Renaissance, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Gentle Giant, Hawkwind, Camel, Yes). Plus, no ELO or Tangerine Dream. As for the sole jazz album, there must be over a dozen better albums than the Miles Davis' one... lazy token inclusion. Sorry, end of rant 😅
You have to be kidding me, Genesis. The Lamb lies down on Broadway was the best album. Of course Rolling Stone has a hard on for Neil Young. Sparks and Super Tramp are top five albums too. Screw the libs at Rolling Stone Magazine.
More revisionist history. I was reading Rolling Stone in 1974, and half of this list is never mentioned that year. They should've shown us the list they made then for comparison.
A few people have already mentioned Frank Zappa's Apostrophe, but he released one of my all-time favorite albums that year, too - Live At The Roxy and Elsewhere. Both of those should have been on this list, but my bar is set pretty low for Rolling Stone. Their taste in music is almost always crap.
I get it. You like a band that no one has ever heard of. Sparks. I've had a band in my past that no one, besides one friend that saw them with me several times in the late 80s, had ever heard, nor did they care. It sucks because you thought they were great, but, you are alone.

I find it incredible that Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom is never mentioned in any of these rankings... one of the greatest albums of all time
kimono my house, my first album
I seem to remember Joe Walsh flying around that year.
They completely missed BTO’s Not Fragile which hit #1 as well as the single You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.
One I feel is missing is Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis. Excellent album. Very underrated
My two favourite albums from 1974 are Eldorado (Electric Light Orchestra) which I expected to be on there somewhere, and Lost In A Dream by REO Speedwagon, which I didn't.

From what we know about your musical taste I think you would like the Richard Thompson album, and the first 5 Roxy Music albums.
I love the first Roxy Music album and own some Richard Thompson solo albums which I really like. Thanks.
I would have included Tangerine Dream-Phaedra, Utopia-Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Sweet-Sweet Fanny Adams and Joe Walsh-So What on that list.
On The Beach was my Number 3.
Late For The Sky was my Number 2,
Caught Up by Millie Jackson was the Number 1 album of 1974! How Rolling Stone journalists can rank Betty Davis's very average funk above Millie Jackson's soul masterpiece is beyond me!
Gotta say highly recommend that Gram Parsons album. Absoultely fantastic songs.

Would be on my list Tangerine Dream: Phaedra, Little Feat: Feats Don't Fail Me Now, Robin Trower: Bridge of Sighs.
Parliament, the Meters, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, The Detroit Spinners! So much funk and soul. All that's missing is Earth Wind and Fire who I don't think had a huge album in 74.
BTO “Not Fragile”
Two Eno albums in a Rolling Stone Top 20. Mind blown.
Some good Australian albums missing 😮 😉 The 3 standouts from that list for me are Natty Dread, They Say I’m Different and Grievous Angel.
That Moe Bandy album cover is on one of your Worst Album Covers videos. The late Betty Davis was married to Miles Davis for a bit. Black Sabbath - Pathetic
Kate Bush- Sounds like a vacuum cleaner!
Rush - Donald Duck on vocals!
ACDC - Pathetic
Years later the same person wrote a book on Black sabbath on how good they were 😂
David Bowie has no 5 star reviews at all!
How this group of people and this awful publication got away with it for so long was always a mystery to me!
The biggest crime of the century is having the album too low on this list!😂
Ry Cooder - "Paradise and lunch" !!!
where is relayer from yes? such a classic, what a miss
It would have been nice seeing Robin Trower’s Bridge of Sighs, really good album not on this list. 😊
Nice to see Big Star, Linda Rondstadt and Sparks in the list, but The new York Dolls higher in the list than Queen? And Lennon's Walls and Bridges should be higher, that was a great album.
Rolling Stone said Elvis Costello was an "over rated hack ". That's enough for me -they are idiots .
Not surprised they ignored Sparks for so long. Rolling Stone's sense of self-importance isn't earned in the slightest. At least there was no Beach Boys album in 1974 so I can't complain too much haha
I have to say they chose a decent top two.
