  • How expensive is food shopping in Malaysia? Or wonder what foreign people buy at supermarkets here in Malaysia? Well we're going to take you around with us as we do a big weekly shop at our local Tesco's in Kuala Lumpur.
We tell you exactly how much everything costs (it's crazy cheap!) and the amazing food you can get here. We even total everything up at the end and give you a final price for how much it costs us to do a weekly shop!

Almost all things are really cheap and value-for-money buys compared to Singapore where I live. Here we pay almost 3 times as much. That's why I love to shop in Malaysia. I target their greens most because they are super fresh, straight from the farms. And I love the Malaysian people as they are sincerely nice and friendly. They have better customer service than here in Singapore.

The organic egg in Malaysia you guys could get it at the famous grocer like Jaya Grocer or Ben Grocer but for Malaysian we bought 'telur kampung' which translated as 'kampung/village egg' which means free range here in Malaysia. If u guys ever come to Melaka (one of the state in Malaysia), take note that there is a "no plastic" policy for groceries (excluding cooked food/beverages and clothings) in major supermarket like Tesco, Giant and Aeon. They do provide plastic bags in smaller stores like 7-eleven and "mini" market. Any bags provided in Melaka must be either paper bags or biodegradable plastic bags (though some shops tend to ignore that). #fun fact.

Nice video mates! Totally different from the usual food hunting vids. This is proper mint!
I'm a Malaysian by the way and these are my personal favorites (actually many Malaysians vouch on them too):
    1. Best bread: Gardenia. You can find them everywhere except in Sabah and Sarawak. If you fancy "dessert" breads, get the Butterscotch ones. Drop dead delish!
    2. Curry powder mix: Baba's or Alagappas and make sure they're the extra hot/spicy ones. You won't be disappointed, except when you're back in the UK and you can't find any of them ha!
    3. Chili sauce: Lingham's. Legends drink them for breakfast.
    4. Coconut milk: M&S. You got that one spot on! There must be a drip of Malaysian blood in you guys somewhere.
    5. Baked beans: Ayam brand. The same brand as your cans of tuna. Most Malaysians love their baked beans thick and goopy like the Americans but personally, I prefer Heinz's because English baked beans are runnier and soupier, and I don't know why that is supposed to be a good thing but it works really well for me.
    6. Fresh Milk: Goodday. Proper creamy goodness. Dutchlady isn't that bad either. If you want a more "grassy" taste, then Farm Fresh is the way to go.
If you want more "exotic" stuffs you can go and find them at Jaya Grocer or LuLu Hypermarket. If you're on a sugar binge, head straight to LuLu. Their Arab pastries are the best!
    Cheerio!

Heya, thank you so much! Thanks so much for all the info, what an awesome comment! We've visited Jaya Grocer and wow that place is insane, lots of American brands we found. As a Malaysian who earns income in RM, price is vital in daily consumption of goods & products. There isn't a particular hypermarket or supermarket offering the cheapest price of goods. Luckily I am staying in an area surrounding by Mydin, Giant, TF Value Mart, Tesco & Econsave (all within 1km. NSK unfortunately is 12km further away). Therefore I am able to be a rationale consumer comparing prices, especially with the help of hp app such as Smartshoppers. Btw if u obtain a Tesco card, u will earn points when u spend in Tesco. The points will be subsequently converted into cash voucher plus additional discount voucher for goods u commonly purchase.

The past government has done so much to make this country a nice place to live in, so be grateful! Stop your whining and think instead, what have YOU done for your country. Great job guys! I studied in the UK for six years in the 70s and love the UK. Free range or kampung eggs should can be got from Aeon or one of the more upmarket supermarts. We love Aeon ie Jusco in One Utama. After reading many of the comments it seems everyone forgot that what's affordable for one person won't be for someone else. It's like that everywhere in the world. Literally everywhere. Even with adding about 30% to prices for U.S. conversions most of those items are still so much cheaper than here in the U.S. I wish I could get Oreos and other items that cheap. I will say I'm amazed at how many big supermarkets there are around the world with brands that I didn't know were in other countries. Huge supermarkets seem like such a U.S. thing to do, but it's fun to see what other cities &/or countries do & have. I couldn't even get garlic that cheap. It's usually between $3.00 & $5.00 for a pound of garlic. That's expensive for something that's easy to grow & you can grow a lot in a small space.

Lol the bargain bin is where i usually head for when shopping for fresh produce. If you get them when they just came out, they're all pretty fresh just maybe slightly bruised. Anything leftover just freeze them and they last for ages! Budget shopping tip 101 :D

My monthly shopping at Tesco average within range of 250-300, sometimes it could reach up to 500 depending on item purchased. That's definitely monthly stock.
My suggestion to you, try buying your veggies or fish meat chicken etc at Pasar Malam or Uptown(night market) which is quite common in Malaysia. There's a lot of food to be tasted as well.

STEPPING BACK IN TIME: DISCOVERING BOH
The story of BOH begins in 1890 when seven-year-old J.A. Russell arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya with his father. At that time, the capital was a mishmash of tin miners' shanties, houses built by Chinese immigrants and palatial new buildings designed by British government architects.
J.A. was educated in England, but upon his return to Malaya, he began his career in the Straits Trading Company where he became fluent in as many as 5 Chinese dialects as well as Bahasa Melayu. This, together with his close contacts with wealthy Chinese tin-miners, paved the way for his investment in the country's flourishing mining industry.
In partnership with his brothers Philip, Donald and Robert, J.A. soon started diversifying his business interests. In 1908, he ventured into the rubber industry, which was then still in its infancy. He was also involved in the construction business and, together with Philip, was contracted to build the Kuala Lumpur railway station.
In 1913, J.A transacted one of the most remarkable business deals in his career where he acquired almost a third of the town of Ipoh.
Around the same time, he established a colliery at Batu Arang in Selangor. In this venture, he was assisted by his brother Donald, a mining engineer trained at the Colorado School of Mines. Their foresight and initiative helped transform this jungle area into a thriving industrial centre just 25 km from Kuala Lumpur.
But it was his business venture in 1929 that has left an indelible mark on the country. J.A. saw the potential of tea as an important crop for Malaya which until that time had been substantially dependent upon rubber and tin. Together with A.B. Milne, a veteran tea planter from Ceylon, he applied for and was granted a concession of land in Cameron Highlands.
Equipped with a single steamroller, some labourers and several mules, they proceeded to transform steep virgin jungle slopes into the tea garden we now know as Boh, the first Highlands tea garden in the country.
Thus, BOH Plantations, the current market leader for tea, was born.
J.A. Russell was a scholarly yet dynamic person. When he died in 1933 at the early age of 50, the obituary carried by The Malay Mail, the local English language newspaper, aptly described his life in Malaya:
'His whole career has been a business romance of such magnitude that it cannot be compared with the achievements of any other European in Malaya - past or present.'

Note: The Russel Family still controls the company from ye olde englande

Happy seeing you guys enjoying your time shopping things in our country. I could see your happy faces saying the things you were buying at the supermarket were cheap (if converted to pounds). Sadly, which is a reality for Malaysia citizens, the groceries in Malaysia's supermarkets are actually expensive for the majority of the Malaysian people.
Many citizens are being burdened with this situation. Malaysian ringgit value or currency are getting lower and lower nowadays, while the groceries and foods prices are getting higher and higher. This incredibly endangered situation makes tourist like u guys from foreign countries, feel super happy and excited with the low prices here, if u convert the value of the groceries into pound, or even euros. Even singaporeans like to come shopping here. Can you imagine 1 dollar singapore is equal to 3.12 ringgit malaysia? No wonder tourist from other countries like to shop and eat at our country! It is super cheap for them!
Again I'm really happy to see you guys enjoying your time in Malaysia. I do feel happy as a Malaysia citizen, when tourist from other countries feel excited and complimenting their time in my country. But sometimes, I just can't help feeling sad for myself and my other fellow Malaysia citizens, that we're not happy with our own country.
May you guys enjoy your stay in Malaysia (if you're still in Malaysia), and please do enjoy and be amazed with our incredible foods and culture :) (sorry if my english is not that good )
