    The cracks between the blocks should be cleaned out and exaggerated with a grinder fitted with a masonry cutting disk and pre-patched. The repair area should be wetted with a bonding agent, or at least sprayed with water before the parging mix is applied to provide the best bond and prevent the blocks from wicking the moisture out of the parging mix too quickly to weaken the finished surface. If the light tan areas of the wall was previously painted, the paint needs to be removed and the parging mix applied directly to clean prepared concrete. Dip your dashing brush into a bucket of clean water before loading the brush with the mix and you'll find it releases from the brush with the flick of the wrist much more efficiently. Without these steps, particularly in a cold climate, the cracks will re-appear and the stucco will fall off of the painted areas within a year.

    I’ve been putting off doing stucco repair (3 patches) for a few weeks now. I’ve seen a ton of videos since then, have all the material to get started just lacking the confidence and knowledge. And I gotta say this is the best video regarding stucco that I’ve seen on here, gave me the extra confidence I needed! Will finally be doing the stucco tomorrow, thank you!

    Good video! I was daunted to patch up flaking texture on a Privacy wall. This technique is way better than my original plan. I had some basics with a color coat method but wasn't confident. This looks easier and assuming I get the texture on right I can change paint color without not understanding the grit product, paint, concrete mix that a bunch of these videos assume I know. I am back to thinking I can do this on my own.

    You can also spray la habra out of a drywall texture hopper. Make the texture mix on the wetter side and turn up the pressure on your air compressor to the max. Shake the hopper as you are spraying on the heavy orange peel so that it comes out easier.

      We did use the same rapid set to also apply the texture. This type of product is mainly used for light shallow repairs that we aim to prime and paint in the same day. If you have some down time and a waiting period I would recommend using La Habra stucco mix which you can find at any home depot or lowes its a little easier to work with

    Can I stucco/texture straight onto cement board or do I still need a wire mesh?

    • @southerncaliforniapainter7989
      @southerncaliforniapainter7989  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late response. while using lath (wire mesh) traditionally is the strongest way to install stucco or plaster thats not to say you cant apply it directly to other substrates like block walls or cement board. I would be sure to use adhesives / glues. if a stucco yard where you get the good stuff is not readily available go to home depot quickcrete has a bonding adhesive just follow the instructions on the bottle i would mix some into your stucco as well as roll it onto the cement board. The only concern for me is possible cracking at the joints / seams over time. best of luck on your project.

      In Phoenix so say 90 degrees for this project and don't need to knock out in 1 day. Do you recommend Habra or rapid set?
      Also any recommendations for prep to cinderblock given previous texture is coming off in clumps. Do I have to strip entire thing cause rest is just gonna come off too? I'm really trying to patch up not do the entire privacy wall over.😢

    thanks for the video, just wondering whey you didn't use any blue bonding for cement. I have seen many and they mention using it.

    • @southerncaliforniapainter7989
      @southerncaliforniapainter7989  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. While we do our best to show everything in a short video explanation some topics aren't fully covered which is giving me inspiration for another helpful video for you all. A bonding agent (especially blue in nature) your only going to find at a building materials yard which arent always close for some customers. As recommended in another comment below you can find a fair equivalent made by quikrete that is white and is sold at local hardware stores like home depot and lowes. This product here specifically is very high in its adhesive to begin with the "rapid set" which is why it sets faster and ready to paint the same day. (masonry bonding glue is recommended regardless to all applications) and something we use regularly the information just did not make it into the video. Thank you for the inquiry Cheers!

    I used this same product. I got it to look like what was in your bucket. But it just wouldn’t stick to my trowel. I had to try applying it at an angle. 40% of the stucco would end up on the floor. Watching your video I noticed some of it went to waste. Do you recall it being sticky to your trowel? Thanks!!

      you have about 45 minutes of working time but it also depends and can vary by the temperature that day and your water ratio. if it starts to dry out a little bit you can add more water and remix it as needed

      correct but you should prime it first with a masonry bonding primer not regular all purpose primers if you can if not those primers will work also. Sherwin williams and dunn edwards carry really good specific primers for that
