@Edgar Miller gotta know where to buy parts. These are fairly inexpensive to maintain once all of the nagging issues are dealt with (there's not that many on an E30).
@Edgar Miller actually the only expensive e30 parts are the ix specific ones because a lot of them have gone out of production. You cant buy new front inner balljoints anymore (they did do a short run of new ones in europe but if your in the us your s.o.l) Other than that the ix shares the exact same rear end components as a regular e30 and aren't too bad to maintain. The center viscous diff is a weakpoint as they do wear out however there are diy ways to rebuild them.
I had a 1989 iX 20 years ago. It was a true hoopty with plenty of surface rust. Tons of fun and nothing could touch it in the snow. One of the few cars I've ever sold at a profit.
I wonder if the difference, besides personalities, is the length of friendship they've had. I'm not sure how long Hoovie's known Johnny, but I know he and the Wizard have been friends for 10 years.
I learned to drive in my grandfather's 1984 E30 320i, a 2-litre RWD manual, no power steering, straight six with 125 hp. I loved that car. Useful tip, if you keep cranking the sunroof lever in the closing direction it tilts open at the back! At least in the EU version.
Most BMW's Pre 1995 are pretty good. I've owned late 80's BMW's my whole life, and never regretted it. I've had 4 different cars in 15 years. 2 I had to let go because they got wrecked.
I had a 1987 325is for a few months. It had an endless list of needed repairs, but you could do any of them at home in your garage. Loved the comfort and engine.
As Isaac said a Wal-Mart throw rug or hell even a $2000 Persian hand sewn alpaca wool masterpiece is a heck if a lot cheaper to replace than putting a new concrete floor in after it is ruined with automotive incontinence

Raj Trivedi: I agree with you. I am not sure it is BMW's fault. Humans are getting fatter, lazier and less engaged. They need bigger cars that think for them and remove any sense of driving, as a skill. When this car was made, I suspect most BMW all came with a manual. as an option, and likely outsold automatics. Now it is likely 90 percent auto's and few BMW offer a manual. When the number one selling vehicles in North America are bloated full size pick ups and SUV/CUV, is it no wonder the great makes have gone to S.it.

Now I'm having trouble finding suspension for it. Even the local BMW dealer can't find BMW or generic suspension for it. It's been at the dealer since October 6.
It's more than just cables - clogged drains, broken guides, peeling headliners, etc. Ask me how I know... If i can get a car without a sunroof I will. Just more things to break with very little benefit.
On the Euro e30's with the sump nut facing outwards you can change the oil and filters without jacking the car up or dirtying your hands. You can change all the bulbs out in 10 minutes, Alternator takes half an hour. These were seemingly built entirely with the Diy mechanic in mind and apart from that are very comfortable and great cars to drive and enjoy.
Well, this is the perfect car for this channel and i'm actually REALLY excited to see what you do with it. An actual great car, a true hooptie and the promise of you working on it? And Ninja is a very cool guy too!
my fav car was my 22 year old e30 320i convertible 1992. Beautiful car, the only Bimmer drop top that people let you out of side roads in and could leave parked open without anyone spitting into or stealing from. I hope you kept this car, values are going insane
I think an E30 was the best "investment" I've made in a car. I bought an 88 325i in 2008 for $1800. It was in very "used" condition with about 212k miles on it, I think. It needed things, but it started and ran fine. It was easy to fix little things here and there and keep it on the road. The purpose for the car was to be something cheap to beat on with about a $2K budget and the it was about saving wear on tear on the newer car. I thought it would be used in up in a couple years, but I ended up keeping it until 2016. I had to do things like the clutch/throwout bearing, wheel bearings, fuel pump, water pump/timing belt, and a couple sets of spark plugs. On my own, I also swapped out the control arms and replaced a leaking/bypassed power steering rack. I'd be lying if I said I missed having to work on the car to keep it going, but it was usually easy to fix and really a lot of fun to drive. I would even take it on road trips. Even without it being that fast, it was just the perfect size and engaging to drive with the manual. I got rid of it due to getting a new car (2015 X1) and not being able to justify cost of keeping this one up or restoring it, but I do miss it. If I'm being honest though, I'd want one that was already restored and had fresh seals.
My grandmother owned a 2002 and it was an amazing car: cheap ($3,500 new), fun, and comfortable. It was a revelation, after driving Honda and Toyota compacts. My son owned a 1999 3-series, and it was falling apart by the time it reached 90K miles.
I think there is cooling required in electric cars, don't they use engine braking to charge the batteries, and that generates heat, or something lie that ? My friend has an all electric car and he explained it to me.
My friend had one with deep-dish 13 inch wheels that stuck out past fender with low profile tires it looked great he sold it that was in 90s I still see it driving around myrtlebeach where I live someone stole rims but cars still going strong.
I have a E30 325i, and it is the best most reliable vehicle I've ever own. Couple small quirks, but has never not started, or left me stranded. Great buy Hoovie! You need to get some lowering springs for that thing.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT. I've had two e30 325is-one is still in my garage and I'll never sell it. I have two e9X cars-a 325i sport pack and an 08 335i. I have had others, and love BMWS, however, I haven't desired any past the E9X. So sad to see the era of soulless, made to throw away BMWs. My first was an 89,exactly like yours(same color, seats, etc)but 2wd. You are fortunate, my man.
Grew up in an 325ix, and learned how to drive in it. Ours was extremely tired when we retired it, but it's probably the best car for it's time we've ever had.
The thing with the E30 is that it was and still is so easy to tune, especially over here Iin South Africa, where it is the most common car to tune or to find tuned. (Apart from the CitiGolf/Rabbit)
I had a 1991 325ix 4dr. Extremely reliable in terms of the engine, but the driveline noise from the AWD was extremely loud and the transfer case is known for all kinds of problems that render it basically a 2wd car. Parking pawl loves to get sheared off too.
Nice! I have a 1990 325ix 5spd with 175k ive kept in great shape everything works and recently updated it with H&R sports and Bilsteins. when i had it on the east coast it was a blast to drive in the snow... but now i have it in Cali.
This car reminds me of the Volvo 850 I drove in high school. It was an 8-9 second 0-60 car, but felt pretty quick to me even though it wasn’t and it was a surprisingly fun car to drive, especially when I was 16 all the way till 19
That right there is a great find. These are amazing on loose or slippery surfaces and they make all the right noises, they may not be as quick as even a new base 2 or 3 series but they have character that no new car will ever have. They have all but rusted away here where I live as the atlantic sea air surrounds the whole dawn place...
Agree BMW have totally lost the plot in recent years! They used to look really smart and business-like, and now they just look bizarre and totally undesirable. A real shame to see the brand setting itself up for a fall.
I think he's got that carpet to suck all that oil. Did you ever notice, all the oil leak cars apart from the really bad leaks are parked over this carpet.😂😂
My parents had an 85 325e, also with a manual transmission. I drove it a lot in high school in the 90s. It was a great car, and very fun to drive. Even though it was over 10 years old with more than 100K miles on it when I started driving it, it still shifted real nice. It would be a great car to teach someone how to drive a stick shift on. At the same time, it had a pretty powerful engine considering how small and light weight it was, so it could be dangerous if you weren’t careful with it
Indeed. I've always thought this car was ugly. And I'm not a true car guy. Like, hold up your fingers to cover the kidney, the car now looks like a Lada 1500 or Datsun 510. Rear end looks like a Volvo 340 Sedan. Hideous car the e30 xD And I'm not even a millenial, I grew up when the e30/e36 was hot.
I remember when I was a young kid and saw e30s and e34s and e38s and e39s driving around everywhere and always told myself I would have one in my garage one day. Now I’d only like an e30 or e34.
Some just can't love the car. I had an E30 318 IS and all I can say is, it is a great looking car ! But you don't have to love the Car to be a real Car enthusiast.
That car being an '88 checks out just from those popout windows in the back. Wild that the timing belt lasted that long, the interval is 4 years - I had one snap after 5. Front diff has such a tiny fluid volume that the fluid should be changed at the same time you do the t-case. Grease the front driveshaft splines also, because they like to strip (there are a few aftermarket options that increase spline engagement to help this) Bilstein iX struts/shocks feel really good in the ix with stock springs. Koni also makes -Sport versions which are likely better. I'd pull that sunroof deflector off because they chafe the paint and eventually cause rust.
The oil leak is a design feature. Stops the chassis from rusting.

I’m a recent E30 buyer (‘91 318i convertible) and ive been studying the E30 market a lot in the past year or so. Considering he bought that at his friendly neighborhood mechanic and not on a national auction site like BaT, with that condition and mileage I’d say probably somewhere b/w $7-9K, possibly even less than that. The prices for clean E30s have shot up in recent years but you can still find decent ones like this for
@Edgar Miller gotta know where to buy parts. These are fairly inexpensive to maintain once all of the nagging issues are dealt with (there's not that many on an E30).
@Edgar Miller actually the only expensive e30 parts are the ix specific ones because a lot of them have gone out of production. You cant buy new front inner balljoints anymore (they did do a short run of new ones in europe but if your in the us your s.o.l)
Other than that the ix shares the exact same rear end components as a regular e30 and aren't too bad to maintain.

@Mister Bojangles I love them both, they bring two different personalities, two different perspectives.

I totally agree with all the things he said about BMW. It's a sh*tshow now.
Ya the grill is too big and the styling is crap and while before you got different engines and different power for different models now there all using the same thing

The Chinese love big grills and they are major consumers of this fading brand.
My friend had one with deep-dish 13 inch wheels that stuck out past fender with low profile tires it looked great he sold it that was in 90s I still see it driving around myrtlebeach where I live someone stole rims but cars still going strong.

I had a 1991 325ix 4dr. Extremely reliable in terms of the engine, but the driveline noise from the AWD was extremely loud and the transfer case is known for all kinds of problems that render it basically a 2wd car. Parking pawl loves to get sheared off too.

Wild that the timing belt lasted that long, the interval is 4 years - I had one snap after 5.
Front diff has such a tiny fluid volume that the fluid should be changed at the same time you do the t-case. Grease the front driveshaft splines also, because they like to strip (there are a few aftermarket options that increase spline engagement to help this)
Bilstein iX struts/shocks feel really good in the ix with stock springs. Koni also makes -Sport versions which are likely better.
I'd pull that sunroof deflector off because they chafe the paint and eventually cause rust.
