    I have a thunderbolt docking station for my desktop pc and laptop, this allows me to use either device (or others if needed) with the full suite of accessories: mouse, keyboard, speakers, webcam, microphone, and monitors. i don't know why you are afraid of using thunderbolt docks, especially vs USB-C ones. while they cost a bit more, you get the best speed and features available for the device with thunderbolt, and it easily falls back to usb-c mode if the host device doesn't support thunderbolt. plus it always does the docking over a single cable, connecting two cables your macbook isn't necessary.

      Can I ask which one you use? I have a desktop and a laptop and I just started looking for potential docks that I can use with 2 high refresh monitors + peripherals.

      @MX1CAN I use the sonnet echo 11, which is also available as Kensington SD5700T. There's other models available from these brands in case you need a slightly different mix of ports and features.

      I heard that Lightning was the precursor to USB-C, Apple had a role in designing the reversible USB-C connector modeled after their Lightning connector

    2:10 you should look at the qd oled ultrawide monitors. they’re exactly this

    Cool Setup Jimmy. But why not just use a TV as a monitor setup instead of swapping around monitors, just plug it and switch the inputs for whatever you need to.

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I would love to try a TV as a monitor for a desk setup, but most of the high end ones are wayyyyy too big to go on a desk. I used to use 32in monitors and thought those were already a little too big.

  • @physicusman
    @physicusman หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    How did you mount the shotgun mic over the monitor? I have tried to do this for years but never really figured it out. I have an ultra wide as well and wanted to ask. Great video. Thanks!

      Elgato Heavy Clamp + Elgato flex arms! I use the clamp on the Monitor arms and then the flex arms to angle it perfectly behind it. There's cheaper alternatives you can find on Amazon as well like the neewer/small rig magic arms, but be warned those are less stable.

    I have a Caldigit TS3+ and my only gripe with it is that it doesn’t supports the usb protocol. I can’t use my steam deck on it so connecting it to my monitor is tedious with a second cable, but my work laptop and personal MacBook are a simple swap of the thunderbolt cable. It makes moving from work to leisure super easy

    I struggled with this for a few years until i spent the money on a thundertbolt dock 2 years ago, Now i use both windows and mac devices and my pc has a thunderbolt PECI card so i can switch between each system

    Thunderbolt 5/USB 4 v2 would probably be when I'd try this with the bandwidth increases. Hopefully eGPUs are not dead by thenor maybe even a resurgence would come if the handheld gaming PCs had one as an official accessory (would love something like that from Valve as part of a Steam Deck dock)

  • @Stuckonsidequests
    @Stuckonsidequests หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Why not use a tb4 dock? Your stream deck and all peripherals can plug into it and all you do is switch a cable

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The ROG Ally and iPad don't support thunderbolt, so I aimed more towards compatibility for everything. Otherwise agreed, would have just went with a TB4 dock and called it a day.

    • @Stuckonsidequests
      @Stuckonsidequests หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JimmyTriesWorld a TB4 dock should support USB 4/3.2 from a compatibility standpoint. I connect my ipad pro to the same caldigit dock I use with my MBP and Mac Pro and all my peripherals (widescreen display, keyboard, mouse, speaker, webcam etc.) work with the ipad. Haven't tried the Ally but reddit search shows you can use a TB4 dock with an older Ally as well (it will function like a usb3.2 dock).

    I set up an L-shaped configuration when I was telecommuting, one leg for play on my Mac and the other for the work laptop/monitor. Now that I'm retired I still have the same setup, but the work desk has my mini PC (Windows/Mint) and monitor. It's all kinda ugly, but it works great so I stick with it.

    this is not a knock at all, I have 3 monitors and am considering thai fighter config.
    please sell me on vert monitors.
    ive been using multi-monitor for 10 years and never vert

    • @TimeLapseRich
      @TimeLapseRich หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've been using multi monitors for 25 years. Vertical monitors are great for long documents. I'm working on a large fiction project and have 4 vertical monitors (4:3) and 2 horizontal (16:9), and I'm running Ubuntu with multiple workspaces. The portrait (vertical) mode allows me to compare multiple documents at the same time. When creating a character I'll use one monitor for the character form, a 2nd for the story outline (huge), 3rd monitor for file system, 4th documents relative to character, on the 5th (16:9) will be image search, and on the 6th (16:9) usually actual references.

    • @JimmyTriesWorld
      @JimmyTriesWorld  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Besides what @timeLapseRich mentioned, I find it nicer for having auxiliary tasks open like messages, emails, and anything else in a top, middle, bottom configuration. In landscape, I don't like how tiling these items into quadrants looks and feels. Also, I like scanning the monitor top down for file browsing in FCP!
