This video focuses on the different types of texture used in music production by platinum producers including Tyler the Creator, Disclosure, Kenny Beats, DJ Dahi, and Gorillaz. There is a wide range of texture categories in music, such as vinyl texture, cassette tape texture, speaker texture, granular texture, and old digital texture such as the SP1200 12-bit processing, and many more. This video aims to demonstrate how you can add texture to your own music, like I have in my Sonic Textures sample pack.

Happy birthday mate! Just turned 28 on the 10th myself! May we make this the best year YET!!!
@@ZonymaUnltd. thank you dude and happy belated birthday to you too! August babies rule the world😂😂💪

Thank you dude💪💪💪
am i the only one that read this in his voice
I have no idea wtf youre talking about but you make it easily interesting enough to try and learn wtf it is youre talking about.
Hahaha that’s funny, I love that. I hope it all clicks in your brain soon my friend but either way I’m glad you found it interesting. Thanks for the comment✌️
LMFAOOOOO
Dude I do know wtf he's talking about and it's still super interesting, blew my fucking mind
@@0box0man0 😂😂😂😂 well I’m happy it blew your mind even if you were confused dude💪
Pretty straightforward. 🤷🏽♂️
Learned a lot bro thanks
The one and only Cxdy! Thank you much, this means a lot coming from a top producer like yourself✌
Yooooo, Whatsup Cxdy, I love all of your music ❤️
haha mate you need some of this advice
@@nothingtoseehere309yeah especially when he does 3% of the production and takes full credit 😹

My favorite way to add texture recently has been to take a variety of water sounds such a the ambient sound of rivers, pouring a glass of water, etc, then running it through Portal. You get some absolutely beautiful sounds this way. To take it to the next level I'll layer pre portal water sounds and layer it with a long and continuous arp melody, then run that through the an instance of Portal together. Gives me chills every time, it literally sounds like an alien water god rubbing your brain.
That is an absolutely amazing idea! Every time I see someone use water in music production it always sounds cool but I’ve never heard anyone run it through portal. That’s genius honestly. I do plan on getting Portal sooner or later, it’s just expensive. You might have inspired me to pick it up ASAP haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
fine I'll get portal jeeez
Dude Disclosure tracks always have so much depth, the breakdowns are almost overwhelming. And the final products always sound so damn good
I completely feel you dude! They really are top TOP tier. I know they are highly regarded but even still I don’t think they are given enough credit. Definitely the type of breakdowns that require a few watches to digest it all😂
What is that disclosure song ?!?!?!? 1
@@octaviannicholas5532 the one that plays in the clip? It’s him just demonstrating pitching around chord one shots, don’t think it’s a full so as far as I’m aware✌️
@@octaviannicholas5532
It's not the one in the clip but check out January, What's In Your Head, or Holding On by Disclosure for examples, they are literally just minor 7th or 9th chords pitched around on the piano roll but sound so good

instant sub man loved this video and the way you broke it down
Thanks dude, welcome to the channel! More videos you will hopefully enjoy too coming soon✌️
I’m an idiot. I was meant to explain in the video that I called myself Drew Grit because I was always using the word Grit/Texture when producing. I feel like that’s my thing. My interpretation of musical texture is what I have to offer as a producer. In the same way that Decap has Knock and Timbaland has Bounce etc. That’s why I made this Sonic Textures sample pack as my first proper pack.
Hope you guys like the samples, and even if you don’t pick up the pack, I hope you learnt something cool to try in your own music from the techniques in the video.
Thanks everybody,
Stay handsome✌
Totally learnt something cool thanks and gave me lots of ideas !
@@piroswat4685 that’s awesome my friend, glad you gained something from the techniques in the video. Feel free to send me any music you make with the info💪
Stopped reading after the third word, couldn't have put it better myself.
Hahahhahaha cheers bro, you know me well
Man, you're not an idiot - quite the reverse! I'm now like eight years into mixing. This was the first video I've watched from your channel, and it blew me away by the greatness of the content. More of that good stuff please!!!
Gorillas song is so iconic and nostalgic
Big time, easily one of the most important songs in my life. I remember it so clearly as a kid, being mind blown by these cartoons making wild genre bending music😂 hits me just as hard today, I’m glad you can relate my friend✌️
Texture is key to add a new dimension along other more straightforward ones (levels, pitch/frequency, panning, ...) - very nice wrap-up! Well done!
So true dude, it is like another dimension, that’s why I love it so much and think it’s so important to think about on top of all the other things you mentioned. More people thinking about texture help them make better music, 100%. Thanks for the comment my friend✌️
As an engineer, I got educated to dislike distorsion. I wanted to always achieve the purest, most pristine audio quality. That was my challenge then. Only recently I discovered that distorsion was one of these dimensions (we can call it texture) that allows to stack sounds but keep them all well defined and separated. Stack two pure sounds together and they may interfere. Add texture/distorsion to one of them, and your ears will be able to keep it apart from the rest. It seems you are just starting with sound design, but are on the starting blocks! Keep the good work and wishing you success in your endeavours!
You not only taught me different tips and tricks on how to layer texures in sounds, but you also masterfully hid all of this in an ad to promote your sample back in a way which I am not angry AT ALL. Good stuff, I am invested.
Haha yea sort of dude, this is first time in nearly 2 years that I’ve tried to sell something on the channel. And essentially it’s had to happen, I’ve got thousands of subscribers waiting for a next video but im earning next to nothing from TH-cam so I can’t commit and give people videos full time.
Like my last video got 17k views and earned £39 dollars in Ad revenue😂😂
So now im trying to sell a pack to fund going full time, and yea you’re right it is integrated in with a video but I actually want people to realise that! If they don’t realise I have to earn in order to give them more videos then I can’t give them more videos!😂
We will see how it goes I guess, thanks for the comment my friend, glad you enjoyed the video✌️
I just love that you use Tyler as the first shot when talking about producers. I know everyone knows he produces his stuff but I think it’s truly unappreciated how detailed and precise his production is. It’s amazing and I’m glad he’s getting that recognition he much so deserves
Couldn’t agree more my dude! He’s known as a producer but is still somehow underrated. His production is absolute top quality💪 glad we are on the same wavelength about him haha thanks for the comment my friend✌️
@@drewgrit_you have good vibes
@@soood3os hahaha thank you very much my friend, that’s an awesome compliment
That last plug-in was crazy
Agreed bro, it’s literally my favourite plugin in my arsenal right now so the fact it’s also free is hilarious😂 shoutout soundly for making it for real haha thanks for the comment my friend💪
Great video and concept, I love how you broke down the topic of texture in a comprehensive and easy to understand way. I’ll be getting this sample pack and can’t wait to use it in my productions 🔥
Thank you bro I really appreciate that, especially coming from a sick producer like yourself. Massive respect man, enjoy the pack✌
i stopped producing a couple years ago this video randomly popped up in my feed and lowkey convinced me to try it out again
Dude do it! Take this as a sign to get creative with producing again, even if it’s just a low key hobby💪 you’ll not regret it and feel free to send me again you make my friend✌️
@@drewgrit_ thanks dog! i’ll send something i make to u for sure. also happy late birthday i just saw the pinned comment
Ayyy thanks very much man, another year gone but not wasted haha and sick I look forward to hearing what you make dude💪
did you stick to it?
Another beautiful video. Simple, to the point, no fluff. Well explained, with named plugins and broken down effects chains while giving examples from popular artists with interesting sounds. You are the peak of music production education. Keep it up, I cannot give you enough praise.
Ah dude this is an incredible compliment thank you so much. All of the above is exactly my targets when I make a video so that’s amazing feedback! I’m currently in a weird zone of trying to increase upload schedule but maintain the same standard. It’s just so time consuming but going to give it my best shot. Hopefully you enjoy those future videos too my friend💪
@@drewgrit_ do whatever you think is best for the content, honestly I would wait half a year for content of this quality. Whatever you feel is best for your process. Keep it up!
That’s very kind man thank you! But hopefully I won’t have to make you wait that long between videos haha hopefully I can find a balance soon. I believe it’s possible so we will see✌️
exactly. the videos are so good i understand why the uploads are so.. i guess you can say rare lol. they’re so worth the wait !
Sorry dude only seeing this comment now! But yea haha rare is a good way to put it😂 the issue is I have thousands of subscribers waiting for next video but earn very little from ad revenue. Last video which has 17k views earned £39 haha so in a situation of trying to make money by releasing this Sonic Textures sample pack in the hope that I can then commit to doing videos full time and meet the demand. We will have to wait and see I guess😂 thanks for the comment my friend and glad you enjoyed✌️
I love the wide application of this principle. It's applicable for everything from house to trap to dubstep.
Definitely, that’s the beauty of it! Texture is a universal technique that can find home in any genre when applied correctly, sick to talk to a fellow producer on the same wavelength man🙏
The saturation on the reverb really opened my eyes. Thank you for sharing knowledge man!
damn thats sick to hear dude, thanks for letting me know! So glad that has opened doors for you, hopefully more techniques that will do the same coming soon my friend✌️
Same idk how I never thought about that 😂
@@MusicByLIFE seems so obvious once you know haha but equally no shame in not twigging you can do it earlier than now, that’s just the way music production works💪
It was very nice to bring different genres into the mix to show how texture works so well. Great video, instant sub!
Thanks very much, you might even be the first person that has pointed out I talked about different genres! That was very intentional so im glad you noticed haha variation is important💪 thanks for the comment my friend!
this is such a straightforward and informative video, youtube needs more people like this guy
That’s such a nice compliment, thank you my friend! I can’t make more guys like me appear on TH-cam BUT what I can do is make more videos so hopefully that’s good enough😂 thanks again dude!
This is a fantastic video. From the editing, to the techniques, and the hiphop references. This is the level that I hope to achieve with my own content. 10/10
Thank you so much dude! I put so much thought and effort into everything you just said so hearing feedback of 10/10 is incredible💪 i owe you one and good luck with your content my friend✌️
Yo, I just wanted to take a sec to say how stoked I am to have found your TH-cam channel. It's really rare that I find such in-depth videos about this particular genre of music and production. It's very obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into it. Keep up the good work, from a new sub
yo yooooo im stoked to have you onboard my friend! I see this channel more like a community and having people like yourself is exactly what I want haha thank you for appreciating the effort that ive put in to the channel and I promise I will be bringing more videos for you asap dude, pleasure connecting with you💪
Man I've been looking for something like this for a while. You're the GOAT. Cheers!
Love that dude, glad you found what you were looking for! When I had this video idea I checked out what was already on TH-cam about texture in music production and I was honestly amazed at how little there was. There still was a couple good ones but in general there was still a lot to be said. That’s what I was aiming for with this video. Also thanks for the “goat” bit, too kind my friend😂
@@drewgrit_ I consider myself more of a composer than a producer, but bit by bit you help me make my songs less mid lmao. Take care
@@richiefloresgitg haha less mid is a win for sure😂 and that’s really cool that you consider yourself composer rather than producer, that’s sick dude. Keep it up✌️
Yo loved your brief approach to the script, gonna look through your channel now, keep it up
Thank you very much, I try to keep my videos short and sweet so that they are digestible and don’t waste people’s time. Glad you enjoyed this one and hopefully you enjoy the other ones too, thanks for the comment my friend💪
In almost every production video i've seen on youtube the dude is trying to sell me on his sample pack or serum bank etc.. but somehow you perfectly explained the concepts while subtly working in how your pack incorporates what you're explaining. Well done Drew, you got a sale and a subscriber.
Hahaha thank you so much dude this is a sick compliment😂 everybody on music production TH-cam has to try sell packs or sprinkle sponsors in the videos to make money to do this full time so I get what you’re saying!
But yea I was trying to present the categories of texture (which I think isn’t talked about enough in music prod) through the video but also like a body of work exploring my passion for these concepts through the pack. I really wanted to push the idea of texture out into the world, so it’s like a pack with a bigger purpose!
That’s why a comment like this feels amazing, thank you my friend🙏 also I’m doing 20% off to celebrate 20,000 subs so get that while you can today! It’s only for 24 hours with code “20K”

Have spent the last few days wondering what is it that my song currently on studio needs and it's THIS, THE TEXTURE. You read my mind with this video, thankyou so much mate
Yo yoooo that’s incredible dude, I love that. Sometimes you just need to see something to make your brain click into gear! Good luck with the studio and if you’re in need of texture my sample pack is a great utility box of texture to get you started, have a look at that if you’re interested💪 thanks for the comment my friend✌️
Banger video! This is actually really good Drew. Happy to see you posting so frequently :)
Thanks dude I’m trying my best to take TH-cam seriously with full time commitment but money from ad revenue doesn’t pay. Last video got 17k views and make £39 from ads😂😂 so I’m hoping that with the release of this sample pack it will help me dedicate more time to TH-cam and put out videos every 2-3 weeks. We will have to wait and see. Thanks for the comment my friend✌️

Hey Kayden thanks for the comment and it’s good to be back! I’ve literally spent months making this pack exploring texture and how I came up with the idea was literally just from thinking about what’s missing in the Producer community like you said. It felt natural to try get producers thinking about and incorporating texture in their music if I could. Hopefully it makes a difference but I guess we will have to wait and see😂

Thank you drew this is really eye opening
No thank you my friend! I really appreciate a comment like this. I’ve spent the last 3 months exploring and experimenting with texture in order to craft this sample pack and video so a compliment like this means a lot💪
Sonic Differentiation is also a very important part to this. If everything is textured there won't be enough contrast. It's about taking all the types of texture in and making sure each elements has something different. Make sure you realise 'smooth/clean' is also a texture. Another really important thing to know is Found & Foley sounds can be used as a drum layer or replace the drum entirely. Like a tree branch being shaken or someone walking across gravel put it through Battery or Shaperbox etc. With distortions really study the different types like tube, Transistor, Magnetic Tape, Transformers, Bitcrush, Wavefolding, Wavetable... & how they effect sounds. Digital is easily best for pure textured sounds (under 5% wet digital distortion for less obvious effects), analog saturation types are better for denser, warmer & harder hitting sounds
Totally agree sonic differentiation is crucial! The reason I even made this video is because I hated the fact that most of the time I heard people talking about texture was one specific type. Which is tape saturation and don’t get me wrong I love the analog style tape sound but there’s so much more.
Drum layers of foley is another great technique and worth exploring, I feel like I’ve heard it a lot over the past few years so I’m a little tired of it but still a great idea.
Very insightful comment dude, good to have you as part of the conversation, thanks for the comment my friend✌️
@@drewgrit_ Cheers man! Yeah I've felt the same with there being a lack of info on this, thanks for shedding light on it for the average person. I've kinda become obsessed with the topic because it's the one thing that you always hear in music yet it never gets mentioned. Almost as if it's a pro producer thing & no one wants to share the secrets. There are bits and pieces I've found including the process of making Mezzanine where they would record drums to vinyl. The guy who helped produce it called Spike Stent had an interview with Sound on Sound (the 1999 one) and goes into great detail about his process & creative mixing. He talks about using guitar pedals, the mpc3000 & tape to achieve sonic differentiation. Really interesting read
@@drewgrit_ another topic that you could do a video on is Creative Convoultion. I've realised how great it can be for unique drum sounds. You can put texture foley IR's through a plugin like Audiothing - Fog Convolver to almost imprint the dry drum sound onto the foley texture itself. So it instantly volume shapes texture to the envelope of the drum sound as well as Frequency. Anything you can think of metal, glass, rock, water, will all change the timbre and texture of drum sounds. It's pretty crazy how powerful this technique can be if done well
Yoooo dude that’s mad you’ve mentioned Spike, the mix Engineer who taught me Studio production at university worked under Spike! So he talked about him and his techniques a lot haha
I actually mention the engineer Stan Kybert in my PS1 video. His real name is Jan but Spike gave him the nickname Stan instead😂😂 so yea long story short, I’m a big fan on Stents work too, I’ll check out the vinyl idea ASAP!
I’ve actually spoke about creative convolution in my PS1 video as well, but you’re right there’s a lot of potential to make full dedicated videos that explore it in depth. Such a powerful technique, glad we are on the same page about it💪
5 minutes of pure gold 🙌🏽
