    I always felt this ship had a “bigger on the inside” vibe because it looks claustrophobic from the outside

    • @johndododoe1411
      @johndododoe1411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To me it had the vibe of an extended suit, like a space kayak. Accelerating to hyperspace once outside atmospheres is a feature shared with Anakin's small 2 person craft that was abandoned on Geonosis. The impression was that Mr. Fett would lie down in a seat as big as the front window, reclining as he looks forward or up at will. When Jango was flying, Boba could stand behind him or crawl back into the crew compartment to sleep. That way, Boba learned how to fly it after Jango was killed. The slaves/prisoners are of cause stowed as cargo, just like on the ships that carried slaves from Africa to America.

      I agree with this statement about it seeming small from the outside. I think this is why so many models of the ship (Lego, Hasbro, etc) create versions that have no interior space. It has widely been accepted as a small interior type of ship (a cockpit and trunk space).

    At least in Legends there is an explanation that the ship had 2 gravity generators and the secondary would rotate with the plattform, while the main one would hold the gravity for the prison cell and living quarter section. This was done so that prisoners had a hard time to reach the flight deck, in case of a prison cell break. Also rotating the ship that way, since there is no drag in space, had the advantage of a very small section to hit from the sides, while having a largge weapons plattform front and aft, actually a design that was emulated somewhat by the B-Wing.

    Pretty sure the main cabin has artificial gravity to keep everyone and everything in place. I read in one book that the main cabin has a gravity trap which increases gravity around anyone trying to escape.

    • @walterbrooks2329
      @walterbrooks2329 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, when you're in space the artificial gravity can work in any direction you want. It can even pull in different directions in different parts of the ship.
      Look at the blaster turrets in the Millennium Falcon. If you're sitting in the turret's chair your gravity is pulling in a different direction than the rest of the ship.

    I remember back in the late 90’s getting the Star Wars Galaxy Collector magazine special Boba Fett issue that had a poster with the Slave 1 cut away and on the other side a breakdown of Fett’s personal armaments.
    Your breakdown seems very inspired by that poster and the cons you listed about Slave 1 are the same issues I had with it back in the day. Pre ATOTC, the EU books made Slave 1 out to be Fett’s primary home. Be it in space or planet side he lived there, with the exception of Jabba’s palace. But the Slave 1’s orientation during flight or in hyperspace didn’t seem to lend itself to comfortable living. I always thought that a rotating cockpit and galley (like the show Mando season 2 implies) would be more practical, so Fett’s bed and prisoner cells would always be horizontal

    Great video! It's one of my favorite ships! Regarding the prisoners bouncing around in the ship when it rotates, I would argue that the same gravity-generators that keep an individual upright in the Falcon as they ascend/descend the gun turrets , is also in affect here. (Regardless of which orientation the ship may be in at any given moment, the "gravity" would keep you in place.) Just my thoughts.

    Design flaws:
    - Rotating makes it a larger target when pursued. (same applies to the B-Wing, who has an uncessary large profile)
    - some forward facing guns are not close to the centre point. That way any movement causes a higher deviation. You did not mentioned those guns at the centre-line.
    - the turret guns cannot used against pursuers. A ball turret mounted at the tip of that extension would have a far better fire arc.
    - there is no advantage ever seen by the rotating mode.
    - You should complain that something like the old Kenner Slave-1 is still missing as a toy for the children today. Damn Disney! ;)
    Nice video, love that ship.
    Skipray Gunboat next please. :)

    • @Halfscreen
      @Halfscreen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agreed. I don't see any real advantage rotating the vessel.

    • @gpgpgpgp1000
      @gpgpgpgp1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Author B.L. Alley I think the argument is that the Slave 1 should stay horizontal the whole time. Other than looking cool, there is no advantage to going vertical orientation.

    • @treeamble585
      @treeamble585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Being a small target would likely mean very little since weapon targeting would be able to track any target that's large enough to fit a small person inside and even sensor jamming like is shown in the video would be ineffective at close range since vehicles can be mounted with FLIR and TV targeting that can track the target simply by what the target emits and reflects in electromagnetic waves. Making it a smaller target so that it's difficult to hit with targeting information wouldn't really be necessary since most weapons in the star wars universe are laser or proton based the energy is easier to absorb or reflect so having an exposed underside would mean the large flat area would work in favor of the aircraft since a lot of complex parts means a lot of surfaces for the projectile to reflect away from and also would make it easier to manufacture parts that can withstand shots from those angles
      The gun part is easily balanced with the guns being able to rotate vertically which means any vertical deviation can be easily accounted for by a weapon control system to remain lined up with the targeting reticle
      Also if you're thinking about the ship as it was originally designed it was supposed to be used for prisons rather than bounty hunters so likely there would be an escort if any threat of intercept were an issue and it would likely be in hyperspace where it wouldn't have to bother with interceptors at all
      as for the rotation likely as Author B.L. Alley said it would require the ship to have two separate engines, one for vertical stabilization and landing and one for normal forward based flight, this would've caused the ship to be heavier and would have a higher chance of failure should anything happen to the ship due to the secondary engine system and required subsystems for the engine
      Is the design perfect, definitely not. But it is capable of doing what is required of it even in combat against the most powerful adversaries.

      It uses scanning and auto -targeting with targets info so pilot can choose who to fire on manually (who has less shielding, closest, more of a threat etc..) Jango used it when dogfighting with Obi-wan in the asteroid field in :Attack of the clones " ...I do agree with some that Slave 1 could do with some upgrades and more or more powerful weapons although the mines he used against OBI-WAN were awesome the sound they make when using surround sound speakers and TV set to movie etc is shattering.
      They should make mini series of all characters in the franchise like the fan based ones cos every main character has their own story to tell. I personally would love to have a go at being involved in something like that.

    In your first animation of landoff of the slave one, the small wings are doing it wrong , they normally turn keeping horizontal, look the righ way they turn at 5:00. This is far more elegant

    What about the docking airlock room from that one clone wars episode when the slave 1 docks an escape pod with clones in it. It’s episode 20 in season 2. It’s called death trap. It’s labeled as the high power rectana in the video so it might serve two purposes. Or maybe Hondo changed it to be a power rectana when he repaired the ship.

    Is it possible that the prisoner section also rotates during flight? This would make sense. Also, when talking about toilets, usually, when studying cutaway diagrams of different large vessels, if referred to at all, they are usually blanked off or hidden behind something closer to the viewpoint of the observer. In this way, the viewer doesn't have to feel squeamish about there being a bathroom aboard. As for a followup video, I recommend the Jawa Sandcrawler from Star Wars IV: A New Hope.

    During the clone wars, a door was shown at the back/ bottom of the ship where the large circular disk was. This was to bored onto other ships while in space. I think there is quite a large area behind the cockpit which we have not fully seen

  • @sparklepawz1185
    @sparklepawz1185 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it's been retconned that the cockpit doesn't rotate at all, only the lower "deck" where passengers sit. In the Attack of the Clones you see young Boba sitting while facing the sky and he has to get up to look at where Obi Wan is in order to shoot him. You also see the cockpit stay locked in newer sketches of the Slave 1 when it's landed.
    Interestingly, some sketches showed that when Jango had it, the sleeping quarters were actually above the cockpit and in some episodes of the Clone Wars tv series, the rectenna is actually used to allow escape pods to dock with a door behind the cockpit leading to a separate room (I assume it's to let people from a docked escape pod enter the ship). There are also versions where the loading dock has an additional wall to act as a sort of air lock?
    All in all, the design is super unique and it's a cool ship but I don't think the inside was ever supposed to be shown in detail considering how even official books and art changes the interior so often.

  • @ryann6919

    I've always wondered about the guns on the falcon having the same design flaw. I understand the guns can rotate and do different angles but the movie clearly shows them climbing up and down ladders then appear to be siting normally looking out the windows.

    • @treeamble585
      @treeamble585 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean the ball turret style guns on the bottom of the Falcon this is a simple explanation since real Bombers from WW2 which had ball turrets similar to it had special doors on the back of them and the gunner could sit inside close the door and the turret would be able to spin freely within its given gimble limits until the person inside wanted to leave in which case they angled the gun downward so they could open the hatch and crawl back out

  • @edyue1

    When it flies upright, the pilot is facing forward, but when it lands he has his back towards the ground and he's looking straight up or if it rotates, then he's facing the back of the cabin (away from the glass?)

    I always like the ship because it was so unique spoke for itself as does the falcon I think it's only drawback is that it makes a wide cross-section when in the crosshairs of an enemy. On the other hand it's very deadly ship and with either one of his owners behind the stick you wouldn't want to be in their cross hairs🖖🏾👍🏾

    Biggest design flaw is that when the ship is in flight you can’t access the ship except for the cockpit. All of it is rotated 90 degrees and I would imagine that this would toss any not bolted down objects into the wall. Those 2 passenger seats shown in the model would both be facing downwards when the ship takes off and if their buckles undo that’s a pretty far down fall face first.

    as you mentioned and commented on several times below, this is a very flawed design almost to the point of being impractical. but, it looks badass and that's all that mattered back in the day.
    what always interested me was the practical living onboard the falcon or a ship like this, kind of like how truckers live in their cabs. i want to know how they prepare and store food, where they sleep, the bathroom and shower, closets, etc.. you never see where there would be a water tank, tool storage, things like that.

    • @Halfscreen

    While in space, Slave I's orientation technically shouldn't make that much difference due to lack of gravity. But the overall layout seems to prefer the horizontal/landing configuration of the ship, aside from the control section. Its definitely an odd design, but the control section still faces toward all the weapons systems, even though you can only see directly above you out of the main viewport in the horizontal configuration (is that correct?)

    star wars ships have artificial gravity and inertial dampeners. the floor plating generates the gravity on the ship so even though they are flying vertically their feet are still on the deck. and the cock pit only rotates so that the pilot can sit normally while the ship is on a planet. The Millennium Falcon also had a transition in its gravity with the quad laser turrets. the access tunnel first starts out as a climb but at some point the gravity shifts and you crawl into the gunner bay.
