They did. Vader's personal guards were clonetroops of the 501st in stormtrooper armor and many of the first stormtroopers were actually clones tha had their armor replaced.
I wonder if at least half of the cooks and janitors were droids since the cost of employing such a massive crew would be incredibly steep. I would definitely be using as many droids as possible to cut costs so I can focus on making sure the weapons sector is running in top condition. Makes me wonder if Darth Vader had to have absolutely sterling credit scores and several no-limit "black edition" credit cards! LOL.
That does make me wonder: has Amex or Visa ever released a Darth Vader edition card?

Read the canon novel Lost Stars, actually imperials had, and were allowed to have, many friends and social activities.

Well the droids would serve the masses with maybe some pretty ladies to perk up morale serving while the chefs would make food for the officers and likely special sorts like the Emperor would get his own elite kitchen staff to tend his refined needs. And Vader was not a monsters those who served well got treated well a bad dish well killing the chef might be a bit much but what are the odds such a dignitary would not have his own chef and cooks etc.

The Empire had millions of troops, super high tech gear, a fucking planet destroyer the size of a sun, 2 ruthless rulers and tons of other generals/admirals. And they lost to the Rebels, mostly a bunch of rag tag foot soldiers with much less effective ships and weaponry.
That's always bothered me about Star Wars.

Well a massacre suggests dozens or hundreds of deaths. A genocide suggests hundreds of thousands to millions of deaths. To Luke's credit the station was responsible for the death of billions but in exchange not all the crew were evil.

In "Star Wars The Force Unleashed" I always did like the last scenes where you are on the Death Star while it is being built. The book also gives a good idea of all the Wookie slaves used to build the Death Star.

There weren’t millions of imperials on Death Star 1. It was about 800,000 at the time of destruction. In total it was about 1.3 million dead between both Death Stars destruction. And this is spelled out in the manuals. - also the maker of this video says this fact in another one of his own videos.
The Death Star I was a sound engieer design. people forget that the exhaust port was made to push out heat for the reactor to cool. no different than vents on the side of a powerful laptop. so the fact that two proton torpedos went down an exhaust port which usually pushes air out goes straight down to blow up the station was not the empires fault or the engineers fault. they didn't plan to build a ship that was "force" proof

All stormtroopers used to be on order 37 which was very, very powerful, but now they are on order 66 so they take commands and they do it.

You're not JUST looking into space. To be fair the Death Star puts on a pretty good fireworks display too sometimes. Plus if you work as a sewage engineer it must be quite relaxing to watch asteroid sized chunks of blue ice floating from the outlet pipes...

Having been stationed on an Aircraft Carrier (modern day Star Destroyer)...I'd say a "tour of duty" may be a few years long...my rotation is 5 sea, 3 shore...I could see a similarity in the Empire.

Except you can exclude the storm troopers that apparently do maintenance; droids definitely handled cleaning, upkeep, and maintenance on the death star as we learn early in a new hope with the appearance of the MSE-6 mouse droid.
pretty much that, the most evil people in the Empire were it's Moff's and Grand Admirals. People forget that after the clone wars the Empire used the drafted on people from worlds they controlled, and those people had no real choose. It's not like you were a pilot and could make your escape, if you were a Stormtrooper you were just sol.

How do we know Alderaan was the first? Alderaan was a demonstration to Leia, but before that they must have tested it, like they said in the rogue one trailer, right?
A bit of historical trivia. It takes about 100 support troops to put 1 soldier in combat. For each soldier, pilot, or officer there has to be clerks in supply, payroll, medical personnel, mechanics, plumbers, electricians, all many of specially trained repairmen, and janitors. If there were 1 million combat troops aboard there would have been close to 100 million in support. Look at an aircraft carrier. The number of pilots is far fewer than the number of ordinary seamen aboard.
Think about that.
I doubt the combat troops were that high of a number.
In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, "there is no bathroom!" Life on the Death Star would be a bloody mess of shit and piss in the trash compactors. However, Emperor Palpatine isn't completely devoid of compassion. He would ensure that each level has a fresh supply of laxatives and light sabers. You, too, can buy the Emperor's Cut on Blu-Ray!

I always cringe during a movie when i see damage as large as the death stars destruction, mostly because i simply cant believe that every single one of those millions of people were absolutely evil.
maybe the empire wasn't so bad? I mean Gary the Storm Trooper (Robot Chicken) seemed a pretty decent guy, and had all the comforts of home!
The Empire was, as a nation, not bad. It instilled the ideals of discipline, honor and unity amongst its ranks and citizenry, and many people were proud of it. The people who screwed it up were Palpatine and a lot of the higher-ups, like the Moffs and Grand Moffs, keeping a lot of shit secret from the vast majority of even its military personnel. Palpatine perverted the Empire for his own ends, but the people of the Empire remained strong.
In Old Canon, the Empire learned from its mistakes and, after an unsuccessful 15 year war (after Endor) with the New Republic, signed a peace treaty, headed by Gilad Pellaeon, and established the Imperial Remnant. They got rid of the xenophobic, sexist ideals of Palpatine's leadership and continued the Empire as it was truly meant to be, eventually culminating into the Fel Empire.
What I want to know is how they kept something that big from simply collapsing in on itself due to gravity as its own massive size would surely have put a great deal of stress on it structurally speaking.
Gravity and the mass of the Death Star and superstructure don't have a relationship like that. I can't explain it like a NASA aerospace engineer could; however I think part of it has to do with with DS being a free object in space with no external gravitational influences (unless it's within the gravity well of a planet, star etc). Anyway the mass/gravity changes as you go from the core towards the outer shell (increases.) Its not on a planet, if it was, the combined gravity would collapse it but alone, in space, it's own weight wouldn't collapse it a) because gravity is not as strong as most people think b) the DS is not a solid object like a moon or a rocky planet and c) the DS is engineered not to collapse (like a skyscraper). I would think the majority of the DSs mass is the core which is only a few km in diameter, enough to make an astronaut barely able to stand on without floating away. Basically the simple answer is the DS doesn't weigh as much as it appears because it's not solid.
