Great review Justin- you are the best!-- quick and concise, no fluff, no BS, full of great information, and you have really done your homework. Thanks for not wasting our time!
Hey buddy! Thanks for your vids! These are the kind I like and need! I’m 100% with u. And I think it’s a good thing to mention to everyone that it’s simplest to start at the cheapest and work your way up like I did. Find ur own comfort level. Reselling is super easy in this field. And and.....U spelt everything right this time 🤣. Thanks dude
There should be fabric sleeves that stretch over the rubber cymbal.. metallic materials, different colours.. yes they’d wear out but make them affordable & easy to replace. You could have logos.. your name, band name, 65 Drums.. anything you want
your content is crazy good because there is not another voice like yours. one of these companies is going to scoop you up and then you won't be independent and that will be a loss for us. But good for you if that happens you will have earned it. thank you for sharing so much knowledge.
I'll just leave this here since the topic hasn't really been covered on most of the channels I've seen. The Yamaha cymbals are not completely proprietary to their modules as mentioned elsewhere in the comments. You can plug them into something like an eDRUMin which will detect the cymbal type and adjust accordingly to it. Yamaha cymbals achieve 3 zone triggering with a single cable because of how they are wired. The Roland cymbals separate the zones using a second cable, Yamaha uses a resistor on the same 1/4" TRS to eliminate the need for a second cable which is why you can't use them on other modules. The other third party cymbals are also wired to support Roland. So, with that said, if you are using one of those boxes with a VST you will get 3 zone cymbal triggering with a cheaper cymbal than what any of the favorite companies listed will provide. You just have to have the time and patience to configure the box to sweeten the zones for your playing style but honestly if you want the best sound and playability out of your edrums you have to fine tune them. Hope this information helps, as there are companies out there doing some pretty awesome stuff that aren't getting much exposure. It might be because the boxes I'm using only have four ports, but toss three of them together with a VST and you have a more capable system than a TD50 for around $800 if you throw in the cost of Superior Drummer 3. I'm using Yamaha cymbals and my triggers are wired for Roland. They all work in the boxes I'm using. You can save money with diligence and discipline in your technology and get better sounding gear than an 8k ATV or Roland kit.
I have Yamaha cymbals, absolutely love them. 13” hats much nicer system 1 cymbal 2 TRS cables and regular hihat stand , no sensor To plug in. 15” ride was 100$ used bought my whole Yamaha dtx560 kit for 500$ 13” hats w/stand 13 crash ,13” crash/ride. Bought dtx pro module last week for it . Gets here Monday
DUDE GREAT JOB ON INFO I GIVE YOU A 10 PLUS ON VIDEO TOTALLY REAL SALESMEN PROFESSIONAL I DIG THOSE CYMBALS LOVE HOW EVERY ONE IS CONVERTING THE BOTH DRUMS TOGETHER!! IT ROKS AND LOOKS COOL
Please a video on how long top line ecymbals last, and how hard you are able to hit them safely, also id love a real basic demonstration on how to diagnose and fix an ecymbal so ideally we can play through them without the worry of anything more than a 20 min solder iron job, i love the content dude.
I have the Triggera 14’ China and its a single zone no choke but its triggering spans the bow and surprisingly enough the movement behaves physically correct and also the way you hit it can give that hit loss chinas have.
I noticed on your drum set that sometimes I see regular rims and at other times the rims are black and look like they have rubber edges. Please let me know what the black rims are. I haven't played drums in over 50 years but electronic drums have sure peaked new interest. Thanks for all the work you put into your channel.
QUESTION: Of the hit-hats featured here, which ones will work with an Alesis Strike Kit? (that is better than the included hats...) - I really don't like the Strike's hat's even after all the recommended updates and adjustments, it's just not sensitive enough with foot usage + combined strikes.
As far as i know, everything. I know for sure that the atv one will work, i cant tell that the roland ones will 100% work (because i havnt seen it with my own eyes), but i think it will work just fine.
Awesome vid! Been thinking of upgrading my hi hats for my Strike. Noise isn’t that big of a deal for me so I’m going to check out the Field and Jobecky ones.
I have the Roland CY-13R that came with my TD-17KVX as a ride and you really have to lay into the bell to get it to trigger. From a cursory google search, this seems to be a common problem. Do the other Roland / non-Roland cymbals act the same way?
Hey Justin, I’m trying to convert an acoustic drum set into an electric kit. I already have drum triggers and this video helped me find the cymbals that I want. I am curious as to what drum module I should purchase. I want a TD-30 but I’m not sure if everything will be compatible. Could you help me out?
The 2Box modules are worth looking at if you want more control and ability to build your own sounds from scratch (but I own one, so I am slightly biased... 😏 ).
Hi Justin, have you checked the Roland VH-12 vs. the VH-13? Is there any difference, except the build a different controller? Have both the same resolution? Thanks for your great informative channel!
I might try experimenting with a cheap metal cymbal, get a piezo and a tub of transparent/clear plastidip to see if it works in volume reduction. Might wear quickly though, but it could be a fun DIY trial.
I know this was 4 years ago. And I am one of the mid 50's guys that the kids have left for college and I am getting the band back together. I am converting a Tama Starclassic Maple into an electronic kit, I have purchased the Drum-tec pro triggers and their mesh heads and will more than likely be buying the TD-50 to run everything. What are the best cymbals now? Roland? E-tone? Efnote, Zildjian? Help please
Hey Justin, I have a full kit coming in from Jobeky with cymbals. I don't know how long it will take to get here because I'm in Oregon and they are based in the UK. I watch your channel and it's helped me and so many others that maybe I could do my part and lend you the cymbals if you would like to do a full review on them? All I ask is you pay shipping when you send them back to me =D When they get here I'll have: 2x 16 inch crash 1x 10 inch splash 1x 18 ride Hi hats Dark Bronze line. If your interest that is.
Not sure if anyone could help me out here, but has the Roland CY16-RT officially come out yet? And if it did, where can I purchase it? I can’t find it anywhere, and if I do, it’s from a shady foreign website that lists it for about $500 USD. So I was surprised when Justin said it was $350, which is MUCH more suitable for my budget. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Thanks for this. I know there are a lot of cymbals and hi hats here, but I lose track of them all through the life of the video. Would be nice to have a product list name so I can further research this topic.
Justin, I noticed you didn’t mention Alesis cymbals in your cymbal analysis. Was wondering your thoughts on the cymbals with their new strike pro SE kit? Your separate video on this kit vs Roland, you were quite impressed with it. So just wondering as seriously considering the Alesis kit.
Thanks for your know how and expertise man. It’s been helpful. I decided to go for the roland td07kv and got a cy13r as an extra. They Should arrive this week. Let’s see how it goes. Saludos de Mexico! 👊🏽💥
1) are you aware of any triggers only available for acoustic hihats/cymbals ? I know there are brands that sell metallic hihats for 400+. Full 5 piece cymbal set could cost 1000+ 2) Thomannmusic has a hihat set with stand for less than 150 shipped to us. Comes with their top end millennium 1000 model
Wowowww... Hello from India brother!!! ... Great explanation and content there. Keep coming with videos such as these. This questions isn't relevant to cymbols but on SD3 and very sorry for being wet behind the ears on the topic of VST Drumming. I am contemplating to buy the SD3. But my edrums are pretty basic (Carlsbro SC D600, I wonder whether u heard of this? It is around $750). So, would I be able to seamlessly use/exploit superior drummer no matter the make or model of my electronic kit? Meaning, be it a top of the line Roland/Alesis or the $750 model which I'm possessing, would the sounds generated be the same quality from SD3 with both these kits when interfaced or setup properly with the SD3 VST? ( here that, I'm ruling out the quality difference of the pads or heads themselves, or perhaps a Roland kit might have presets within SD3 to aid set up sensitivity etc and possibly the discomfort of smaller pads on the $750 kit compared to top of a line Roland). But you may tell a kit makes a player good to an extent. But still not bringing these to light the crux of my question is: Would I be able to bring out the similar sounding drum grooves or licks or an audio from the SD3 VST, no matter the kit being put behind the VST to trigger'em?
Justin, I got a Vh 13 from japan for 500 brand new included tax, so you should be say that, because in US Retail is 700 but if you get from Japan is 460 dollars and you get in 3 days. Yes 3 days... is freak
Would you say that the rubber rims on low volume triggered cymbals (like Jobecky) is mainly for dampening purposes? Otherwise, is the rubber rim absolutely necessary?
Hi there love your videos and content a lot. I am looking into converting my standaard hihat pad into an moving pad. Can you do a video on that please? What controller can you use, how to set it up etc.. thanks alot and keep up the good work! Richard
Justin, I’m just starting to dive into the world of electronic and/or triggered acoustic drums and cymbals for home studio recording but I don’t know much about it yet, I’ve always been an acoustic drum kit drummer. I’m thinking of going with low volume triggered cymbals but I’m curious how that works with a hi-hat. Do you have a video or any advice on the best way to trigger low volume hi-hats?
Hey Justin! Thanks for your vids. Really helpful. Leaving money out of the equation, what would recommend for a gigging drummer for the best set up? I now know the cymbals! What module and drums. Pearl mimic?
What are the benefits of larger ride cymbals? I'm guess appearance, spacing to match acoustic kits.... better playability? I dunno, I need to keep my kit small and don't mind small cymbals since they sound exactly the same and play well.
It would be cool to have a electronic symbol manufactured to look like a acoustic metal symbol,...some sort of new technology, with a thin metallic coating or veneer....I believe who ever can come up with this and incorporate a wide variety like those for acoustic drums is gonna make a fortune.
Awesome video, thank you. So I have purchased a TD-50 and it came with 2 x Roland CY14 C & the Roland CY18-DR. Looking at adding some cymbals - what are your thoughts on the Roland CY-12 Crash Cymbal? Looking for different sizes and definitely need some help. I want to get the ATV 10" splash too but it's not available in the US right now
Hi man, have you checked out or heard about the goedrum 360 eCymbals 14" Hi-Hat? Think it could it work for a beginner- intermediate trying to transition from fixed hat and electronic pedal to achieve a better more natural feel of the hats? Apreciate your opinion. Love de vids!
Loved the video. I'm glad to see you listed the best $2500 set as the Strike Pro SE. I'm very drawn to this set and want to get it based on all the features, pads, and that you can tune them and make them feel closer to acoustic drums. I'm wondering if you keep in mind the ATV EXS-5 when making that ranking. Although the alesis set excites me more, i have some skepticism built up after looking at so many things online the past couple weeks. Thanks!
I just purchased the Strike Pro SE(upgraded from the Command Mesh which was great for the price point). I'm excited I found this channel cuz I totally forgot that most trigger pads can be swapped(like I could get a roland hi hat and it'll work etc...)
What are those cymbal wingnuts at 8:53 in the video? I have one cymbal that continues to loosen after a few hits and I cannot figure out how to keep it tight. Thanks!
I don’t see anything on YT from you an the cymbolic hi hat system with their little foot pedal insert thing. It seems to have some support out there with those that use it. I’m going from a rack mounted hi hat to a stand. Already have the stand. Hi hat sound quality and realism are important to me but I want metal not rubber. I’m weird that way with any cymbal. Thx
Thank you for this another great video ! Just a question: How do you plug more and more cymbals ? I mean, I only have "2 in" for crash. How do you plug a third and fourth for exemple? :) Thank you again for all your great job ! So helping !
Hey man. U can use a second cheap module or a cable splitter. They can be bought from many Edrum online stores or maybe even amazon. But you’ll only get one zone when u split
Another really great video Justin. Cheers man. I was >this< close to buying the VH13's which I saw on marketplace for a ridiculously good price but then looked up comparability with my trusty TD9 and no dice! I don't hate my VH11's though. But I'm desperate for a larger ride and it's hard to go past Roland's 18 so I'm feeling a module upgrade might finally be in the cards soon...
FYI for anyone considering metal cymbals: Just dont. Ive had both a full set of Jobeky and Field cymbals and I cant recommend either brands. The chap roland cymbals that came with my old Edrum kit held up better than any of these did. Ive had to have Jobeky replace 2 cymbals and Field fix another which then broke again. What you get in looks, you sacrifice in sensitivity, durability and loudness. Looks like Ill probably have to replace them all with a rubber set as they all stop working eventually.
I was planning to buy Jobeky brillance cymbals :') Are they really not reliable ? It seems to be more solid than LV series.. What serie did you owned ? Thanks !
Yamaha does make good cymbals, but those cymbals are proprietary to Yamaha modules only (At least the Hihats and Ride cymbals are). And Yamaha hasn't made any new cymbals in years, while other edrum companies are coming out newer and better cymbals year after year.
Hi. I think your videos are very interesting. I'll give you a suggestion, with all due respect, of course. If you put translation into Portuguese, you would have a few thousand more followers on your channel. Let's see: Brazil alone has 210 million people And Brazilians watch more videos with their language. Here, in Portugal, we speak the English language a lot. But in other countries with the official Portuguese language, English is not so widely spoken. Here I leave the suggestion. I love your videos. You are an excellent communicator. Thanks.
There is no bell sound for the crashes on Roland kits. The only way to get a bell zone on that cymbal is if you use CY-16R-T as a ride, and then do not plug in the 18" Digital Ride.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE DRUM CHANNELS!!!!!!!!
Hey I love the whole drumming on the roof look. Awesome!
When upgrading to a VH-11 for my TD-9 well over 10 years ago, I kept using the CY-5 hi-hat as a splash, might look a bit odd but it plays fantastic.
Great review Justin- you are the best!-- quick and concise, no fluff, no BS, full of great information, and you have really done your homework. Thanks for not wasting our time!
In the mean time I finally upgraded my TD-17KL ride from a cheap medeli one zone ride to a Roland CY-13R and I feel like a total boss :D

yeah that's one thing I'm definitely worried about
Well done bro. Heaps of good info. Thanks

Great video. I learn alot here on your channel about electronic drums. You know your stuff very well and it's well explained.
Those look awesome. I've always played an acoustic set I feel like if I ever switched these would be the first I go for
I keep wanting the metal cymbals but I worry about trigger accuracy
Dude. That rooftop shot is cool and ballsy as hell lmao. I'm not a heights kinda guy so my feet were sweating just watching those clips 😂
definitely will need to refer back to this video when I graduate college and move my set into an apartment, thanks for the help man!!!
I have the Triggera 14’ China and its a single zone no choke but its triggering spans the bow and surprisingly enough the movement behaves physically correct and also the way you hit it can give that hit loss chinas have.

The best metal HH Ive played on (currently) is Stealth. Best rubber hi hat is VH13 hands down.

Are you now able to buy that 16” Roland CY-16R-T ? I thought it only came with the set and not for individual sale?

Do you know if the Roland vh10 hi hat will work with an alesis dm10 module
Awesome video! any plans on doing one for drum pads?
I would like to add a cymbal to my Td- 25 kvx but all the output jacks are already used. Do they make an attachment to add more cymbals to that kit?
Splitter cable
I don’t see anything on YT from you an the cymbolic hi hat system with their little foot pedal insert thing. It seems to have some support out there with those that use it. I’m going from a rack mounted hi hat to a stand. Already have the stand. Hi hat sound quality and realism are important to me but I want metal not rubber. I’m weird that way with any cymbal. Thx
I love my ATV 18 inch ride but man it was expensive at $800 Canadian
Kinda of curios that yamaha wasn’t in any of the top’s. They may should think about upgrading hardware...
If you had to choose between the ATV hi-hat which comes with the EXS-5 or the Roland VH10, what would you choose?
Thank you for this another great video ! Just a question: How do you plug more and more cymbals ? I mean, I only have "2 in" for crash. How do you plug a third and fourth for exemple? :)
Thank you again for all your great job ! So helping !
Hey man. U can use a second cheap module or a cable splitter. They can be bought from many Edrum online stores or maybe even amazon. But you’ll only get one zone when u split
Beau Hale thank you ! 👍🏻☺️
Have reviewed the Simmons sd600 yet?
Good video
What are your thoughts on the Yamaha RHH135 hihat cymbals?
Can you know make a new video like this? And like bassdrums and pads?!?😍
5:06 David Frank! Woo!
yeah he's a pretty cool dude, met him a few times
My favorite cymbals would be the Ozone effect cymbal.
I've upgraded my CY-8 to CY-15R a year ago and now I'm just jealous 😂
What happened to yamaha no reviews...i still hav orig dtx3 .i need 2 sat,speakers...
Thanks !
You didn’t cover Yamaha cymbals?
Im guessing because they arnt the leader in any particular area.
Yamaha does make good cymbals, but those cymbals are proprietary to Yamaha modules only (At least the Hihats and Ride cymbals are). And Yamaha hasn't made any new cymbals in years, while other edrum companies are coming out newer and better cymbals year after year.
@@65Drums fairs dos, i never knew they were proprietary
@@65Drums also do you know why the atv fx cymbal is hard to find? I really want one to finish my set
I'm a big fan of the Yamaha cymbals! I have mine plugged into an old dtx module with midi out into my 2box module
Hi. I think your videos are very interesting. I'll give you a suggestion, with all due respect, of course. If you put translation into Portuguese, you would have a few thousand more followers on your channel. Let's see: Brazil alone has 210 million people
And Brazilians watch more videos with their language.
Here, in Portugal, we speak the English language a lot. But in other countries with the official Portuguese language, English is not so widely spoken. Here I leave the suggestion. I love your videos. You are an excellent communicator. Thanks.
I got the VAD506. There are two cables from the CY-16R-T to the TD-27, but can't get the bell sound to work? Can you help?
There is no bell sound for the crashes on Roland kits. The only way to get a bell zone on that cymbal is if you use CY-16R-T as a ride, and then do not plug in the 18" Digital Ride.
How do you not have the Roland digital high hats on your top five??
They didn’t exist when I made this video my guy
@@65Drums ahhh, of course, gotcha. Thanks so much for the quick and straight forward reply 🤙🏼
What was that gong bass drum setup?
Can you make a review about the Millenium mps-850 it's from Thomman store in eorope you make the best reviews.
Vh-12 Roland works with TD-9 Module or SPD SX or SPD30 ?
ATV hihat and Roland hh top pick are both compatible with td17 module?
My vh10 is a lot louder on top than on the edge it's not a big deal but why is this ?
because the edge is an overhang of rubber. The top of the cymbal has a plastic support plate under it
@@65Drums thanks Jason for that.
