    TH-cam comments are the apparent home of old white dude memories, so here's one: i had a tiny short wave radio starting in the late 70s in Philadelphia. No internet, obviously. No idea how to find anything. Figured out over the course of a few years that there were english language programs from Germany and Hong Kong and other places... then this weird show came over the little bitty speaker... "the antidote to panel games..." what's a panel game? Like I've Got a Secret? That stumble across a weak signal at just the right time of day opened up a woods of british and other broadcasting to me, and i've been listening ever since. So great to be able to open a week browser and choose from the schedule... but something special about trawling for gold in the ether back then...

    Humph was an incredibly hard act to follow - but Jack Dee has brought his delightful comedic cynicism and ridicule to this iconic radio series. The standard set by Humph has thereby been maintained, and the programme remains one of the best on radio.

    • @davidrobinson2776
      @davidrobinson2776 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The secret is to embrace the show’s idiosyncrasies and embed yourself in them rather than try to take it in a new direction. Jack certainly knew he couldn’t follow Humph but he could make the transition as smooth as he possibly could. A lot of comedians would try and force their personality on the show but Jack was obviously a fan and immediately settled into the rhythm.

      Jack is a perfect host in place of Humph. He's always been a naturally grumpy and cynical but funny comic.
      Apparently in his early days he was really pissed off before a routine and did the whole set like a moany grumpy bugger and it went down a storm. He realised he'd hit on something and the rest is history.

      People sometimes find it difficult to distinguish paraphrase from summarize. Of course, for those with access to a dictionary, the difference is quite simple. To paraphrase is to express something in other words, often making it shorter. To summarise is to make things ready for the warm season in the middle of the year. (The word you probably want is borrow)

The Highway Code applies to motor vehicles and things like one-way systems, traffic lights etc. are all there to regulate motor traffic.
