I find most of Bob's stories very believable, I'm about the same age and I was brought up on a council estate, I remember buying Standard fireworks when I was a kid and there was always a house where we believed strange things were going on.

I had to give the same explanation when my dentist asked his assistant to prepare some Fuji IX and I started sniggering. It's a bit of a running joke between us now.

Bob really understands that in order to sell a lie convincingly you need detail. He packs so much of that into his lies and his truths that this is why he is so difficult to read. And he is, by a country mile, the best guest on this show.

Every time I watch this, which consequently tells I've watched it more than once before (indeed, many, many times; so many times that I can anticipate Fuji Nine like a lyric of a song), I pretend to be unbiased, and feel free of bonds to deduct the truth or the lie. He's such a great fabulator, or actually isn't because Mortimer's truthful.

Standard fireworks were in a class of their own. Standard bangers, the Pom Pom cannon and the Little Demon, were the loudest you could get. I'm 81 and remember them vividly from my boyhood in the 1950s.
That's what I've just said. I'm only about six years older than David Mitchell, and I remember Standard Fireworks really well. Growing up in the 1970s, a lot of people bought them for bonfire parties in the back garden. And Sarah Millican likewise is close in age to David, and she didn't seem to know them either. (Lee Mack is the same age as me, but maybe he was staying quiet, since he's on Bob's team.) I mean they'd be everywhere in the shops in November.

In Bobs book he mentions he used to have 17 sugars and the story behind it is actually quite sad, and the joke of the 18th sugar being too sweet is completely true. This man and his life are both sincerely funny without trying to be. Absolute legend of a guy

Of course it's true. I used to buy 'Standard' fireworks when I was young just as we were allowed to buy cigarettes for my parents. And we used to play with sparklers in the kitchen, especially if it was terrible weather outside, because that's where all the water was just in case. If truth be known there were others on that panel who knew that there was such a thing as 'Standard' fireworks but that wouldn't have been anywhere near as funny as it was with Bob explaining it all. 😎

Bob is the comedians comedian. Most of his comedy is actually pretty clean but absurd. Difficult to pull off
I've met a couple of solicitors who were as thick as two short-planks, but Bob is not one of them.

In Bobs book he mentions he used to have 17 sugars and the story behind it is actually quite sad, and the joke of the 18th sugar being too sweet is completely true. This man and his life are both sincerely funny without trying to be. Absolute legend of a guy

Of course it's true. I used to buy 'Standard' fireworks when I was young just as we were allowed to buy cigarettes for my parents. And we used to play with sparklers in the kitchen, especially if it was terrible weather outside, because that's where all the water was just in case. If truth be known there were others on that panel who knew that there was such a thing as 'Standard' fireworks but that wouldn't have been anywhere near as funny as it was with Bob explaining it all. 😎
