Villeneuve is a strong man for making slow burner films in an age where most people are overdosed on dopamine lol. Bless his heart his filmography is great and unique in our age.
Definitely. I watched his big release movies and found something special about them. Then watched his smaller releases, and "Incendies" made his genius obvious to me. What a powerhouse of storytelling.

I thought it was fantastic but if it doesn't make enough money for the studios it will be kind of pointless in retrospect. It's a damn shame they weren't able to film all of it at once.

Let me clarify one thing for all english speaking people listening Denis. Some must wondering what is it he's saying when mumbling "Tsé" once in a while. in Quebec, "Tsé" is a contraction of "Tu sais" which means "you know". This is funny he's mixing this up when he's speaking in english as no one outside Quebec probably get that.
6:38 has "tsé" and "you know" right after the other
Tsé is also widely used in France, and probably in other French speaking countries as well, but yeah it's funny to listen to him say that while speaking English XD

Dennis never liked interviews and promotion work... but he accepted it as he has to market and sell his films to the masses... it is a part of his job, but the part he most dislikes.Yet he is always friendly and humble and actually very eloquent and well spoken.
It’s the masses that are the only thing that can make the sequel happen.
To be fair, Q tends to ask far better questions than your typical clueless sci-fi flick interview. No "who would win, Paul Atreides vs Luke Skywalker?" or "Do Fremen women wear underwear beneath their stillsuits?" type crap 🤣

I think it was part of the discussions after they postponed DUNE because Denis has been deeply opposed to HBOMax distribution. If the common folk don't know who Denis is then they will after DUNE Part One. Honestly, streaming services are a cancer to classic filmmaking.

Denis doesn't need to express it vocaly. To me his love for the stories, the source material and the respect he shows towards previous adaptations/original movies just oozes from the screen. you can see his love for the material he was working with in Bladerunner 2049 and now in Dune directly on the screen. this would not have been possible without a deep love for the project he is tackeling. As somebody who was introduced to the Dune Universe through the David Lynch movie at the age of 13 and read the books afterwords my heart melted each time i recognized a little nod towards the 1984 version.

Villeneuve was dreaming of making this movie for multiple decades? I'm really not surprised at all. This great, majestic film has all the calling cards of being made by someone who truly loves the book.
I think most people when they read the book just want parts of it to come to life
Bladerunner 2049 in IMAX was one of the greatest theater experiences Ive ever had. The opening alone was magnificent. The score kicked in and the bass rumbled in my chest. Then a giant eye opened before me and I felt like I was going to fall into the screen. It blew my mind. I've since watched that movie at home and its still wonderful, but nothing can compare to that initial sensation of vertigo and the excitement that followed from every visual and audio thrill. If you didnt see it in IMAX, you really didn't experience the movie.
I suspect Dune will be much the same. Im Looking forward to this Friday. Its gonna be incredible.
Dune absorbed me into it's world in a way that hadn't been done since Blade Runner 2049. The atmosphere is absolutely breathtaking, especially when paired with Zimmer's relentless score. This movie HAS to be seen in IMAX.

@Stella Hoenheim the book is too big to properly convey even with a trilogy so it would have been a crime against the source material to cram it down into a single movie. Either they make it a fast, confusing, shallow action movie for people like you and disappoint the entire fanbase, or they do it right and take their time establishing the world, who the houses are, who the characters are, what their struggles are going to be.
I totally agree with your assessment of Bladerunner 2049. It was more like an experience than a movie. I wish I went to see it a second time in the theater.
Dune was great, but nothing like 2049 in that matter.
On the topic of Denis' fear that he may not be able to make a movie that pleases a teenager... my son (16) and I went to watch this movie with another dad and his daughter (13) - I know my son was mesmerized, totally got the underlying messaging, managed to understand and navigate the complex political drumbeat pushing the story forward, and were able to identify with the characters brought to life. My friend's daughter had freshly come of reading the book (kid still read, thank goodness) and was impressed with how he brought things she'd imagined to life... she was all smiles, and I could tell her mind was still flowing with what she'd just watched.
As for my son, he said it was the best grown-up movie he's seen, and that the way it was brought together in story, picture and sound was pretty fantastic.
His first question was "when is the next movie?" quickly followed by "there is going to be a next movie, right?" - so, yeah, it connected with my son, Denis. Fantastic job, period.
As a québecois, I love when Denis throws in a little tsé at the end of a sentence in English hahaha.
When he says "tsay" it's actualy the words "tu sais" in french wich means "you know".

That's the feeling. When you know you have to do this one thing, somehow and no matter what, or you'll spend your life regretting it. That is how dreams become reality.
Also, what a testament to the strength of Frank Herbert's writing, to inspire such genius over and over throughout decades.

@@2hedz77 That would be irrelevant - the interview isn't aimed towards people who've read the book, it would be foolish to restrict it to such a small market. Like Dennis said, the intention of the film is to make more people discover dune like he did when he was young.
@@20storiesunder it's not irrelevant. A good interviewer does their research. And for a book such as this it definitely should've been done. It's not a requirement the interview focus on the book, for the interviewer to be prepared.

Genius director. Hasn't made a truly bad film by my measure. He's brought new life into Dune.
He did this so well. The last time I felt this way in a theater was first Jurassic Park, then Lion King, then Fellowship of the Ring, Interstellar, now Dune. A masterpiece of filmmaking. I have read the first 3 books 2 times and before the movie came out listened to the first novel and Messiah on audiobook again. This was an experience.
Although you might’ve tried already, you should try reading god emperor! To me, it brings a lot of closure for the first three books and is a good send off. Books 5 and 6 are not resolved (unless you want to read Brian Herberts ending).
God damn.. he is great. Almost single-handedly saving the blockbuster movie experience. (some cool comic book movies sure) but what he is doing is so so much more.
Villenueve and Nolan are my two favourite current directors, and both of them make publicly accessible huge blockbusters, but aren't afraid to treat their audiences with some respect and assume they have the intelligence to follow a complex story. Love their work.

@@MrDarkweaver that’s partly why South Korea dishes out so much good content. Even more so than Hollywood. They don’t treat their audience like children with child like responses from child like characters like in the recent Star Trek movies and they don’t infect their content with activism either. If you want to make a point through a tangent then do it subtly. Blazing saddles is the perfect example of showing how stupid racism is without telling you how stupid racism is.

I too was once a pretentious totalitarian teenage when I discovered Dune. And the film, with the exception of some cut scenes, missing characters, and a lack of fetishism, was the most genuine adaptation of the book I could have envisioned.

This director brought alive images that have been in my head for nearly 30 years. It was astonishing to get the imagery and tone this accurate.
I genuinely don’t think I can find a single thing wrong with Villeneuve’s Dune. The pacing, the soundtrack, the cinematography, the cast, the artistic direction, it’s all beautiful and so perfectly done.
To be honest my only two problems with the movie is how the great cast makes zendaya look bad by comparison, and also the weird kick Duncan does when fighting the three harkonnens during the siege. Tbh that says a lot about the film I think.

My main point of contention is the lack of color. I acknowledge that I am spoiled by Jodorowsky's and Moebius' vision, and now reading the book I get how desolate the environment of arrakis is, but I still think the costume design to be very plain and average. Would it kill them to have some color in these sci Fi movies?
Hiring people who love the source material to do an adaptation is so logical, but sadly doesn't always happen these days. Dune was fantastic, and I'm so glad people are going to see it.
He's just the most well spoken, passionate, humble guy
For me the film did exactly what Denis says he wanted: it spoke with me in a highly personal way. I was completely mesmerized while watching the film, really, if there was any bugs in the movie theater they all received free access to my interior via my dropped mouth.

I think it’s destiny that Denis V would end up making this movie. Not only because he’s a legit fan of the book since childhood, but because so is my dad. All my life I’ve heard “Fear is the mind killer” from him. And DV has been one of my fav directors since Prisoners. Everything he’s made I’ve loved and my dad thought Blade Runner 2049 was awesome! So when it was announced that he’d be directing Dune, we were SO on board!
I hope he will be able to start to film Dune Part 2 soon!

I love this man. His movies made me into a film nerd. Every single one of his movies just engulfs you.
I fell in love with dune around the same age as Villeneuve. This movie was so obviously the result of the same passion for the novel that I feel and I'm so grateful to finally experience it. Thank you Denis and great job.
Dune was actually the first sci-fi story I ever read, and I've been reading the genre ever since. I found the book on the shelf at my next door neighbor's house when I was babysitting their kids, and I read it over the next few babysitting sessions. I was like, aren't you kids sleepy? You want to go to bed now, right?
Must be hard to be so intelligent, poetic, insightful and humble at the same time.
Congratulations on one of the best interviews I have seen. I hate it when interviewers ask questions that are two minutes long (showing off their knowledge of the subject), but you have a knack for asking short questions that drew out Denis (an extreme introvert). Well done.
Regarding what Denis said, it was wonderful to hear him talk about no longer caring about awards, focusing on women, focusing on the relationship between Paul and his mother. Great stuff.
Only issue: the sound levels were off. Once set up, no one checked the sound levels of the mic when soft-spoken Denis talked vs when the significantly louder interviewer said something.
This man has a gift. I was excited throughout the movie thinking "I am actually going to get a good science fiction trilogy!!! It has been far too long!!" It is not a dopamine fix star wars ride. It is paced and there are politics as much as action.
Watched Dune in imax this morning. Totally blown away by the beautiful poetry, fantastic images and deep layers of stories he so well adopted from the book

The 8 year old in me, whose first introduction to this story was the 1984 film, cried with joy watching this adaptation.
We need to protect this man, Part 2 must be finished.
It is rare in this modern age that the more you learn about a person the more respect you have for them. With Denis Villeneuve, however, this does seem to be the case. He genuinely seems sincere about his art, as opposed to accolades and awards, which suggests a high degree of meditation. Those artists who perform for recognitions, who, as it were, are continually looking over their shoulder to see who's watching, are dabblers. By contrast, Denis seems very deep, indeed.
This man is one of the best filmmakers working today. I love all his films.

After this interview (and in particular his final comment on being grateful to have been able to realize his childhood dream), Denis Villeneuve has become my favorite filmmaker. He is a treasure to cinema and creativity in general. I can not wait to see what he makes next. Dune pt.1 was masterfully done, and Villeneuve has my complete faith and admiration. Well done, sir.
I love that he made Dune for his teenage self! In his ear the whole time, he sometimes had to tell him to shut up and then other times he had to listen. Hopefully there will be 13 year olds in the Dune theatres who go on to a great filmmaking career because of him.
If you dont love Denis, his movies and his "deep love" for stories and characters there is something wrong with you

He’s really close to being the overall best today. Very interesting career he’s had. I’m so glad we have him. The first feeling I got after watching the film was how I was treated with respect as an audience member. I’m not here for superficial fart jokes and camera gimmicks, I want to see moviemaking. This guy has literally been promoting this movie non-stop all over the world since August and I am very glad I was able to see a conversation with him in London but god I feel for him he has been interviewed non-stop

Wonderful interview. As a 20-year-old aspiring filmmaker, I relate to a lot of what he's saying about being young and ambitious. Best director working today and a massive inspiration for me.

Can we just take a second to appreciate the fantastic interviewing from Tom Power in this? Doing a 30+ minute interview with a director like this is incredibly challenging. Getting so much insight and interplay and also being able to react to what your interview subject actually says to be able to think in the moment and find the best way to follow those threads as they're uncovered is hugely difficult, and Tom Power did an amazing job of it here. I have a new appreciation for Dune and all of Villeneuve's work because of this interview and, even as someone who isn't a filmmaker, I found it incredibly inspiring for all of my own creative work in music, photography, and just in life as a whole. Knowing that Villeneuve has been dreaming of making this movie for longer than I've been alive and how he has now finally been able to realise that dream is just beautiful to me. Thank you so much to CBC for doing this and also for giving us a full cut of the interview to let it breathe and grow instead of just condensing it down to a couple of minutes of soundbites. I've seen Dune once already but I definitely feel I need to see it again in IMAX now because of how Villeneuve talked about the experience he envisaged for this movie while was making it, and I cannot wait for part two now that it's (finally!) been officially greenlit! Onwards to 2023!
I’m so hoping they’ll re-release Part One in theaters along with Part Two! (I just finished watching Part One on Netflix and I almost felt guilty for not being in a theater).
I first experienced Denis Villeneuve watching the movie Incendies. Unforgettable to this day. His greatness is always on display.
Before watching the movie I have read the book again and i was wondering in what way this could be adapted visually. To me, I thought that there are two perfectly adequate ways to go. One is a 8-10 one hour episode to rellay get into the worldbuilding and politics and all the intricacies of the story Game of Thrones style. The other is a 2-3 part movie that focuses on the epicness and spirituality of the movie. Something that couldn't have came across on a small screen. Obviously lots of things have been omitted from the movie, but Denis have made the best choices about what to focus on, and how to tell this story in a meaningful and efficient way. The first half an hour we spend on Caladan, is a masterclass in worldbuilding, and lays a rock solid foundation of the whole story.

As a visual artist, Denis said several things that I can certainly relate to, and it's a real joy to hear his heartfelt responses on the topics of creativity. Looking forward to seeing Dune tomorrow, and definitely looking forward to whatever Denis brings us next!

Loved the movie! Watched it on HBO Max at first, then went to the theater the next day to catch the stunning cinematography on a big screen. Great work Dennis!!
the man is a genious, years back, when dune movie was being discussed, with very mediocre directors in mind I was frustrated, as they were going to be very low budged and worse execution. Fortunately the master of Blade Runner 2049 was able to craft another master piece, I can't wait to get a director's copy of Dune. I would like it to be watching 6 hours of this so loved and fascinating universe.
I say this with all due respect, I dont think Denis could have nailed this film any better if he had been able to talk to Hurbert. Just amazing.
Denis will go down as one of the greatest directors of all time
The adaptation was excellent. There were things left out of the story, but the only thing that was actually changed was the final scene for the Liet Kynes character, and I would say that change was a good idea from a cinematic point of view. I can't think of any other plot points that were actually changed. I suppose you could include the location of Paul's fight with Jamis, since in the book it occurred after they arrive at Seitch Tabr, but that barely qualifies as a change, and it means that they can move the whole Seitch Tabr production design as well as the full impact of Fremen culture and Bene Gesserit influence on it, to the second movie.
The fight with Jamis actually took place at the Cave of Ridges in the book. The only "change" was perhaps the decision for it to take place outside. I do agree with the change to Liet Kynes' ending after thinking about it. It does the same job as Liet's capture and "execution" in a few poetic moments.
Just saw it in IMAX. Very nice. Not quite LOTR quality, but a very very good film. Part 2 should be even better.
This adaptation was flawless, & Denis is a true master. I hope people see this in the theater to experience the absolutely massive scale of this movie. I’d watch him do the entire 6 novel run.

It was so funny for me, that I didnt expect anything at all. I never touched Dune in my life both books, movies, even games? nothing. I was aware of the title but never knew anything about this.
But the trailer which I discovered 2 weeks before the world premiere at James Bonds No Time to Die, I decied to go just like that "Lets see what this is coz the trailer is awesome"
And then the magic happened. Im always hyped of my loved movies like star wars, 007s, every Marvels etc. so Imagine my hype when I see STAR WARS opening sequence, huge out of the world emotional and visual massacre of Avengers End Game, I love "my" movies, but the feeling of being TRULY AMAZED to the bones, like I was like shocked of what I saw and felt after Dune... this wasnt describable for me. Something mystical inside my mind grown that night when I came out of the cinema. And what is so funny I mentioned at the beginning of this comment? Funny was, that I mentioned right after we saw Dune with my family exatly the same as here above but also I said that ONLY ONE movie made me feel that kind of amazed and touched to the heart. And it was Blade Runner 2049, and believe or not, I f*ckin didnt know till very TODAY that it was the same mans work which is Denis Villeneuve o.O Now it makes perfect sens why I felt like that for the 2nd time of my lifer after seeing a movie. Good Job sir. I cannot wait for part 2 and maybe a 3rd one which is planned by him.
what Villeneuve says about theater vs. home viewing could also be said about book vs. movie.
Such a beautiful film. It was stunning and a love letter to the book. Rereading the book now and just so impressed by this film. Can’t wait for part 2

I found it a failure. Beautiful to look at, but just hollow in most respects. The novel _is_ basically unfilmable, as many have said.
@@peachmelba1000 I don't know what you're smoking, but your statement makes absolutely no sense. It's incredibly faithful to the source material and brought the book to life in spectacular fashion. So either the Dune novel is hollow, or you're one of those people that just love to moan...
