  • AC started making a loud grinding, rattling, clicking sound and air wouldn't blow from the front facing vents in auto mode unless I turned off the air and turned it on again in the front vent mode.

    From what I can find on the internet, this thing has a couple of names: the air mode servo, or the air flap actuator. The actual fix for the clicking/grinding is at around 19 minutes on this video. Basically the worm gear is too loose on the little motor. I wached this video and fixed my air vent issues. Thanks a lot YJ!

    Thank you for taking the time to put up the video, i was able to fix my moms cars thanks to it. For everyone out there who will be doing this themselves, here are a few tips to keep an eye out for.
    1- Watch the video from 9:31 to 9:38 in .25 slow motion. It'll show you the position of the white piece in the back of the motor and the arm that drops down.
    2. Make sure the silver arm is in the up position (i think thats closed)
    3. Be careful with the tabs when opening the box, they break easily. I broke two but there were 4 more so it's holding fine.
    4. Remember the motor direction, use a marker to notate which side goes where.
    5. Be sure to have a magnetic screwdriver.

    This video was extremely helpful. My girlfriends Lexus RX300 had the same issue with the mode mix servo. The little worm gear had a bunch of play in it. I adjusted the shim up a tiny bit on the shaft, put it back together and it worked perfectly. Saved myself 200 bucks!

    Things to add to this video, put the mode setting in a place the actuator makes no noise and leave it there! then when you remove the actuator make note of where it is on this setting. Remove the actuator then mark on the actuator its position this is THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. I used a scratch-all do the mark on the case, Then repair the gear but before you do make note of the motor which side is up or it will spin the wrong way "Backwards" mine had printing on one side so please make note before you remove it! I would also go to Harbor Freight and get a small assortment of wood screws in case you do loose a screw. I found out about the motor by putting it in backwards! Good luck this repair will save you lots of $$$$$$

    Thx a lot. Just fixed mine, hopefully it will last. Be careful when opening the case, the plastic clips can be easily broken. I broke two, but four clips still work

    On my 04 es330 I only needed to clean off the metal prongs and old grease. I regreased, reinstalled and I was good to go. No loose gears to be found.

    What is the blue thing that he added? Is it some sort of glue?

    • @colinm4792
      @colinm4792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Afghan Viral blue loctite. Available at any Home Depot/auto parts store. He applied it so the copper shim wouldn’t slide back down.

      Colin M thank you for the reply. I did actually get to and did everything in the video. The sound completely disappeared but sometimes it reappears for a certain amount of time and then disappears, any suggestions?
