1860's machine shop at the iron smelter in Fayette Michigan

  • If you get to the upper peninsula in Michigan and have an interest in industrial history Fayette is a must see. Unfortunately the furnaces were closed for restoration work during this visit.
    Edit- as I was uploading I had a brain fart and thought I had misspoke when I described the process at Fayette as using two blast furnaces, I have since researched the topic and discovered my original description was correct.

      Definitely a lot of windows. They had steel shutters, I'm not sure if that was for fire safety or security but it was quite impressive.

    That's really neat how they have some history about the men who worked there and where they ended up later in life. Those guys were real machinists. We've got it easy compared to what they did. Thanks for sharing, Sir!
