Gotta love the magic of the 80s, lol. My dude Michael just painted an entire F-Body in an enclosed trailer packed with expensive computer equipment full of static electricity, filled it with highly flammable vapor, with no respirator on his face, while using a paint gun with no air hose attached. And turned out a flawless black finish. The man is a legend. Lol

It takes a true badass to respray an entire car in one minute with NO Spray booth, NO prep, NO AIR HOSE on the spray gun AND do it in a fine leather jacket!
I looked down the comments to see if anyone had said this 😂 you can even see he's spraying over dirt and mud. The hoff doesn't mess about when it comes to his paint jobs.

Love the smile on Bonnie's face at 2:00 as you hear the grunt and futuristic purr of K.I.T.T's engine, she's happy with the way he's now tearing up the course how he was designed in the first place.
She was so maternal towards K.I.T.T.
And Michael refused to cut corners or accept shortcuts.
Bonnie was his mom and Michael was his dad, if we look at this in terms of traditional parental roles. Mom nurtures and takes care of KITT, while dad challenges and encourages him to do and be at his best.

I would say Wilton was really K.I.T.T.'s father, Devon took on the role of Godfather to him and Michael was essentially an almost political VIP to K.I.T.T who he was tasked with providing security and then eventually became a close friend over time.
Their relationship was more like that of a security guard chauffeur driver to a celebrity,, you couldn't say Michael was being a dad to K.I.T.T seeing that he was far more knowledgeable than Michael and it was actually his job to protect him from harm, not the other way around.
As for Bonnie, yes, definitely took on the pseudo maternal role.
One of my favourite episodes. It shows just how human KITT has become and how much he and Michael trust each other.
Kitt had his first fear back in field work Michael had his fear in the plot.
I'd say that this is a more thorough explanation of what happened to this highly sophisticated mesh between automobile and supercomputer.
My presumption would be that prior to KITT's destruction, KITT's memory banks absorbed knowledge and experience from his interactions with Michael and his own personal experiences.
By all mathematical logic (as powered by KITT), it is statistically impossible for a car to drive on two wheels. Yet with Michael at the wheel, he has shown KITT it IS possible.
Conversely, KITT assumed that his molecular bonded shell and his design made him indestructible. Goliath, the Urban Armored Assault Vehicle (using a destabilizing agent on the bonded shell), and that acid bath has shown him not to be indestructible.
For the longest time, KITT's supercomputers measured his efficiency (or reduction in efficiency over the years), and as such, required routine maintenance from a cybernetic technician (Bonnie or April) to reduce the amount of wear and tear done to KITT over the years.
Like with anything machine, newer machines operate better, more powerful, and most efficient when new as opposed to used.
KITT's primary function is for the preservation of life, including human life. And especially the life of Michael Knight. Michael Knight - the man whom KITT has spent most, if not all of his time with. Throughout the seasons, fans of the show have seen KITT's capability, humanity, and interaction over the seasons improve because he still absorbs data about his interaction with humans.
Now that KITT is like a new machine again (but without his human companion and his primary purpose), he doesn't know how to adjust himself. Especially since the human who interacted with him wasn't in the driver's seat to learn from and be more confident with himself as an autonomous supercomputer.
KITT was also second guessing the abilities of his molecular-bonded shell, despite what could be considered Michael's blind faith in its ability to preserve KITT and himself when facing impossible obstacles.
Could KITT's molecular bonded shell protect himself and Michael through a wall of reinforced concrete? Absolutely. Well, just so long as it wasn't coated with a chemical meant to destabilize that bonded shell and weaken KITT's indestructibility. KITT knew that wasn't the case.
But he wasn't sure if Michael was going to be hurt when they went through the brick wall. Therefore, KITT's primary directive for the preservation of human life overridden KITT's logic (and Michael's confidence in KITT) and KITT saw that it was logical to stop before going through the wall.
As time goes on, Michael interacting with KITT could give KITT the confidence he needs to have faith in his molecular bonded shell to blast through impossible obstacles once again. (Notice how KITT wasn't needed to Turbo Boost through the building's walls or over the toxin pit in this episode?)
Such attention to details makes ALL the difference between a GOOD show to a GREAT show.

I read somewhere that Stu Philips was inspired by the music of the Beverly Hills Cop movie (Axel F); hence the similarities. :)

I liked how Michael believed in KITT even when he doubted himself.
In retrospect we can see how much they personified KITT. They never really thought of him as a machine or a computer. His “recovery” here is much like a human athlete recovering from an injury.
To date, that was the most beautiful car Pontiac Ever made man.
Solstice was possibly prettier shell/shillouette but there something about kitt, and just sleek elegant stealth practical all in one

I love how he repaints KITT with a spray can. 🤣 90+ mph on an autocross course, too - ha! Got to love '80s shows; I grew up on this stuff.
Bonnie was nice enough to teach Micheal how to fix Kitt suppose if they had a season 6?
I always thought it weird because in the pilot Devon was quick to point out "It's not paint, it's a finish bonded into the molecular structure of a new substance" that wasn't even metal.....I never had high hopes for them closely following continuity though!
being age 12 and a computer nerd at the time having the commodore VIC 20 and later the commodore 64 KITT was my dream computer. (and still is) this episode had me in tears during the acid scene and happy as hell when KITT was rebuilt.
I love how the scientists were shaking their heads and were ready to give up on KITT but Michael and Bonnie refused to.
what I always loved is how much Michael wanted to be involved in fixing KITT in the season runs. Jerry-rigging a ramjet, helping Bonnie here, right up to Knight Rider 2000 where he rebuilds him from scratch, and then transplants him into KIFT. He didnt just walk away and leave it to others, and I dunno, as a kid that really stood out to me. Guess thats why I have an old car of my own I'm restoring :)
It's funny thinking back to the first episode and just how much Michael hated "IT" not a "HE".

The stunt driving on this show was excellent.
Love how KITT has all the exact same consoles, seats etc. he had before the acid pit. And how he says "Nice to have you back at the controls, Michael.". Then after this episode, they resume the status quo as though the whole acid incident never happened. Though in the next episode "Buy Out", we see KITT's newfound self-consciousness as he starts questioning his worth. This may be as a result of the events of this episode.
The writers wanted to have as a throughline to this season kitt having PTSD like flashbacks and bits of hesitation expressly to show that trauma isn't one and done and that it takes time to heal.
The network shot the idea down.

In all the episodes of Knight Rider that were made, KITT never got more completely totalled than in this one. As a boy I remember watching it and being heartbroken and even a bit scared. You never thought they would do something like that mid-series, but they did.

I agree I remember when this episode came out and K.I.T.T was destroyed it shocked me because at the begining of the season 3 when Bonnie returned K.I.T.T had been blown to bits (except the shell/ Frame work ) when Bonnie's mentor sent a rocket into K.I.T.T's tail pipe. then half way through Season 3 they destroyed him again. each time K.I.T.T has been hurt only his frame work is left thanks to the Molecular Bonded Shell.
And in a regular one hour episode too...
This should’ve been a 2 hour episode or movie?
He got pretty messed up for Season 4 when they came out with Super Pursuit Mode.....With the invulnerability neutralized, I think the physical damage was worse but didn't seem to cause much issue to the AI and was back on the road with no ill effects. The evil Devon proclaiming "KITT is dead! Look at him....he's dead!" had me cracking up though, this time was kinda sad and unsettling.

Loved the ending on that scene. KITT and Micheal ride off to battle but you're not sure KITT is 100%.
This is absolutely my favorite show. I'm actually waiting for an Amazon delivery today for my Knight Rider graphic novels, just to read about more adventures with the duo 👍🏾👍🏾

This was my favourite episode in the series: K.I.T.T. Reborn!
This is still the hardest episode to watch for me. I felt so devastated when K.I.T.T was dumped into that acid. Seeing him literally destroyed like that is still painful to this day. But I love this scene when he finally comes back and of course when he gets revenge on the JD by putting it into the acid.

Or the turbo boost is hooked up to Michael's rectum to create the combustion with incredibly powerful flatulence. Probably why there's an auto vac function when a grenade is thrown inside kitt in knight of the chameleon or when they set off the miniature explosive in knightlines.

Well, I think most producers of the time that were working on the show were using actual film, not VHS tapes. I think technology connections did a video on it at one point. I think he explained that sometimes producers of different medias would use different types of filming, between VHS and actual film. He explained a bit that if you still have the negative of the film, you have the freedom to remaster the film onto whatever media that is relevant without losing too much quality, and scale the resolution up pretty high. But, with tape, you obviously lose the freedom to actually do the same with film. Go watch technology connections "film: the reason some of the past was in HD".

Just think - in filming this show they had no less than three Firebirds to film an episode. Not because they broke down - they actually were pretty reliable back in the day. It was because each was optimized for different filming scenes and stunts. I found that very interesting.

Well, no one was sued when Yazoo's "Situation" was ripped off for the _Beverly Hills Cop_ theme, so what right does anyone have to sue _Knight Rider_ ? If anything, Vince Clarke should have sued Harold Faltermeyer.
It’s sad teenagers today are so jaded they look at some thing like this and Scoff because let’s face it compared to the fast and the furious it is like a cartoon but man when I was a young teen in the 80s this was so much fun let’s face it we all wanted a kitt of our own. Over 30 years later and K I TT is a level of AI that still yet to be achieved

I'm only 17, and I think this show is awesome, its 1000x better then any of the F&F films are.
Im 16 and im making my own from a 83 firebird
I too grew up with this show as a kid in the 80's (I have it all on DVD now)...I'm getting a Tesla Model 3 in a month (just waiting on the car to be delivered), and with the exception of turbo boost jumps, the (nearly) indestructible shell, and the snarky computer, it can do most of what KITT could, including self driving. The special effects were actually pretty good by 80's TV standards. No, it's not even remotely believable, but it wasn't supposed to be, it was supposed to just be fun, and it was.
...and here we go all special snowflakes teen complaining with the "I'm only blabla and I yadayada" stuff...
Even if KITT wasn't ready yet, Michael give him the push he need it to be

One of my favorite parts of this episode was when Michael talked to KITT when he was shot in the face the last moment he was Michael long and how a car backfiring or a cigarette lighter would scare the daylights out of him

KNIGHT OF THE DRONES
This was the first time he needed such an extensive rebuild though.
Goliath required some heavy repairs and Knight of the Drones definitely did a number on him but nothing took him out like that Acid.
KITT didn't even have the ability to talk after that acid bath. He was literally destroyed.
He was rebuilt 4 times. Goliath part 2, Knight of the Drones, The Juggernaut (season 3 to season 4 cliffhanger), and this. This was the most brutal of them though because he was dropped in acid. But I always thought KITT Prime looked sweet.
I remember this episode like it was yesterday. Loved that show.

KITT is always so clean. I picture KITT in a parking lot with robotic arms tipped with brushes and squeegees cleaning the dust and dirt while Michael sleeps.

Fun fact: They put the old dash in the "Hero Car" used for stunt shots, that's why in some scenes if you look close enough, you'll see the old dash on KITT :)
Yeah, when you see KITT in Auto Cruise, if you look closely, sometimes you see the dual TV monitors with the old dash in the hero car that was used for the stunts
This show taught me so much about life. Sounds dumb but totally true. It also taught me what decade I wanted to be stuck in for the rest of my adult life lol hahahaha.
