I love the early/mid 80s “extreme”metal where everything was mixed between thrash/death/black bands like Onslaught,Venom,slayer,sodom,sarcofago,bathory,blasphemy etc etc it seemed like a really cool time to be alive Plus there was the classic heavy metal scene and hair metal…that’s write I said it I love hair metal!!!
Honestly the beauty of metal is how many subgenres coexisted at the same time and yet each one feels like it's in its own pocket of time. I won't lie, hair metal is a guilty pleasure, but as a whole I love being able to switch to another genre when the vibe changes. Sometimes I don't wanna feel just angry when listening to metal lol.
I think the hardcore punk bands were what inspired a lot of first wave black metal, if you listen to anticimex or discharge, you can clearly hear bathory and venom there.
Seriously loved this video. I only got into the first wave of black metal fairly recently, but I sincerely LOVEEEE Venom’s debut and Black Metal album. I also have listened to Bathory’s debut, but Venom are absolutely my favorite but Bathory ain’t half bad. I definitely will be listening to more and I especially want to listen to Mercyful Fate’s 1983 and 1984 album.

Great topic! Von is an interesting pick, i would have mentioned Blasphemy instead considering they were way more influential in that raw style. The rest of the Brazilian scene was amazing (Sepultura/Vulcano/Holocausto in particular) too.

To me "Haunting The Chapel" and "Hell Awaits" are their most Black-Metal-ish records. That phase ended with "Reign In Blood" and its strong Hardcore Punk influences.

You got this all wrong. The first wave of Black Metal will always be VENOM. Then bands like; Bathory, Mayhem, Hellhammer etc are all second wave. Mantas of Venom had coined the term Black Metal, as they wanted to separate themselves from what the media called "Heavy Metal", which were bands like Bon Jovi etc, Mantas came up with Black Metal to create an identity away from what the press were calling Heavy Metal. Bathory, Mayhem, Hellhammer all copied Venom, they used Venom's imagery and a different sound to Venom, that is what makes them the second wave.
Sounds like an excessively scrupulous trip, tho it's kinda legit. Yet, I wouldn't put Mayhem (with all my respect towards them) into the ranks of Bathory and Hellhammer. While the latter did copy Venom, the former copied Venom AND Bathory/HH/CF. Kinda different generation, really. They've got their names from HH song names too.

There HAVE to be other groups copying it or at least being ispired by the band who invented that style to create what one could call a wave in the first place. And if it wasn't for Norwegian Black Metal and its popularity we wouldn't even talk about waves at all. As that was really the first time a seperate Black Metal scene existed. Before that, many "first wave" bands were sometimes called Black, Thrash, Speed, Power or even Death Metal. Or they made up their own name like Sodom did with Witching Metal. So, "First Wave Black Metal" is really just a way of grouping together different '80s bands that a) were inspired by Venom, b) had satanic lyrics and c) influenced '90s Black Metal. I remember how, back in the day, bands like Bathory or Bulldozer were sometimes described as "a poor man's Venom" by the press ("Venom für Arme" in German).
Its not, Candlemass is a Doom Metal band and Doom Metal is a whole other can of worms. Though as a fun fact, Candlemass was one of the influences of the 2nd wave of BM.

First of all, some key bands are missing (e.g. Master's Hammer, Root); also, and most importantly, it does not get into any proper analysis on what are the characteristics that connect these bands together, and what set them apart from 2nd wave. Finally, you clearly feed into a major historical misunderstanding: Venom, as far as I am aware, have never been a bm band; sporting satanic imaginery and lyrics doesn't necessarily make you a bm metal band, otherwise Black Widow would have been bm. Venom played heavy metal but, being poorly skilled, they'd initially make up for their shortcomings by playing more brutal and dirtier than average. No trace (chord progressions, riffs, atmosphere, spirit) of bm in their songs. Your bad.
It's actually extremely perfect timing that you're commenting this now, the video that I plan on uploading this week is an overhaul of this video. I'm not particularly proud of this video, especially for being the first of its kind on my channel so I'm adding new bands, correcting some misunderstood context, as well as other horrendous mistakes I noticed the more I remembered this videos existence and overall I just feel moderately comfortable talking about this era of Black Metal.
