    It's a testament to Reginald's acting abilities that he played a father so well, considering he never had kids of his own. He was a natural.

    • @JamesSmith-jq6om
      @JamesSmith-jq6om ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Some people who never have kids of their own may have young people in their lives whom they might love and regard as one of their own. I'm 40 years old and have been married and divorced but we never had any kids,but a good friend of mine that I've known for 22 years now has a son and a daughter,the latter which was born just weeks after me and said friend met and both of these kids became so special to me from the moment I met the older one,who was almost 3 at the time and from the moment I first saw the baby after she arrived,that I literally feel like they are the 2 kids that I didn't actually have myself. And that continues to this day with said kids being 25 and the daughter turning 23 in August,both who regard me as the father they didn't get to have. Their real father basically left the mom and the whole family when the daughter was only 13 months old. So a person definitely doesn't have to have or bear kids of their own to have maternal or paternal love and instincts.

    This was my second favorite Winslow only moment in the show. My favorite non-Urkel moment was when Eddie and Carl fixed the car up...and he said he was going to pick up his best friend to go for a ride. And then told Carl to hop in. I was tight like that with my father and I never forget how happy and humbled he was when I got company tickets (and a pretty nice parking pass) to an A's game back in 2008 and I asked him to go. I couldn't have thought of anyone else. I lost him exactly one month after that game and I think about what a great time we had all the time. Those moments matter and it is a blessing to have real connections as an adult with your parents.

      Good picks. As a kid, I couldn't appreciate how much Eddie picking up Carl for the first drive was. But as an adult, I realize how much that meant to Carl, to be able to ride "first" in the car they both worked on/finished as father and son.

      It really is a shame that shows like this don't air anymore. They're seen as corny now and outdated but this is some good wholesome entertainment with positive life lessons that feels sorely missed now in my opinion. Every father and son relationship should be like Carl and Eddie's. You don't have to be perfect just be there for your kids and try to set a good example. They will grow up to appreciate everything you did for them and pass that on to their own sons. I miss that we don't really have shows like this on tv anymore. Everybody just throws sarcasms at eachother for 30 minutes and that's a sitcom now apparently.

      I tried college near and far, found that it wasn't a good fit for me even after all the effort I put into it. I also had to put up with teachers who had bad and God complex attitudes, classmates who treated me like an outsider and a social atmosphere that didn't really give me positive vibes. Afterwards, I found a passion, bowed out of college and haven't regretted it since. What Eddie did here is something he should of done a long time ago but it took time and a little more growing up to realize what his passion was and pursue it without holding himself back anymore.

      After eddie was born she stayed at home for a while then got pregnant again with laura.
      A couple of years went by and there's go judy. When the kids got older; harriet went back to work and became a secretary at a stock type of office (perfect strangers).
      Meanwhile..... Carl still a cop and did a mission in new york for a few months (die hard).
      after completing the mission, he came back to chicago and boom family matters came about.
      First season, eddie told carl he wanted to be a cop. Now as you see on this episode, eddie side track back to the first time he told carl he wanted to be a cop and now that eddie is older and realize the real. He is now a police officer or probably a captain now.

    While I loved this show, and loved all the messages and lessons and family values, this came at a time when college was really being pushed by everyone. Mainstream sitcoms made it all out to be either go to college or have a horrible life. At the same time, i do appreciate the episode challenging that. Eddie being a cop WILL make a difference in his life, not to mention pay him a living wage and offer a great pension. I don't recall how this episode ended but looking on it now, I would DETER most people from going to college considering what indoctrination stupidity centers they've become. Youre better off NOT going these days and being a cop is a very respectable job.

    • @Aircheekz
      @Aircheekz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very very well said! This was a valuable scene indeed, but i agree in the 90’s all these family shows pushed college, especially the ones on the local networks like abc, nbc, wb, etc. and it definitely indoctrinated ppl who didn’t really need to go… so now many are in debt and dont even have much to show for it in some cases. Now we know better though. I have a bachelors degree but if i could do it over id go straight to culinary school after hs, and then even add another trade skill like something tech related.

    The final season imo doesn't get a lot of credit it deserves. Granted the show was nearing it's end by this point (it coulda done maybe 1 more year, it should have for sure,) but the writing in this season, especially the 2nd half was top notch. They really seemed dedicated and wanted badly to evolve the characters to a satisfying point. The show gave up on Urkel's inventions after the mind reading show early in the year (only time that year there was an invention,) and after the Stevil show they got more and more serious with the themes. The 1998 part of the season was so fun to watch. Eddie's arc in particular here is a shining moment of it all. He finally drops the sillyness he'd had in the past few seasons and manned up, and got serious and it all paid off well. Not only does he fully advance into something he could do well, but he finally makes Carl proud which is what he tried, and failed, several times through the show to do. It really felt like he was reaching for his destiny finally and found it. It's really well acted and wonderful.
    I also loved the scene at the bar after this where he goes with Carl to meet all of his longtime friends. It got very dark with the cops who were mentally suffering from the job and I love how the writers took time to highlight that as it's not a pretty job field to go into at all; some people suffer for it. Great mature way to handle it all.
    In this way I really hate we couldn't have one more year. Eddie on the job having to deal with tricky moments woulda been a nice twist of pace that year 10 coulda used quite well.

    The scene that takes place after this is good, too. Carl asks Eddie why he wants to be a cop now since he always dreamed of being a professional basketball player. Eddie tells him that he wants a job that helps people. Carl takes Eddie to a bar where some of the patrons are former cops who either quit or were forced to retire due to injuries, and he asks Eddie if this is really what he wants. Eddie says yes, and Carl announces to the patrons that his son is following in his footsteps, to which the patrons respond by applauding.

    On a side note.
    Yep. This was how my parents felt about college back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I wasted hope scholarship and a several years BS’ing and not knowing why I was even there. Eventually quit after a year, got chewed out, and worked various jobs. Everything from construction to fabrication dept in a plant to selling motorcycles at a dealership. Took real life experience for me to discover I liked Engineering, but I never would have had the drive to get thru the math and physics classes (much less the Eng specific classes later on) without life experience. Paid my own way through school one semester at a time which sucked, but looking back it only added to my drive bc it was my money.
