I personally don't think there is any difference between "Diwali" and "Deepavali". South Indians call the festival of lights as "Deepavali" and North Indians call it as "Diwali". Atleast that is what I am aware of.
Even North Indians call it Deepawali in pure Hindi
Originally it is Deepawali. Because it is festival of lights. And in older times people lit up diya/deep to light up their houses. Diwali is just a short form.
In North it's celebrated when God Ram came back to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. And in South it's celebrated for different reason. Festival is same, but reason behind is different in some of Indian states.
Deepavali and deevali both r same no difference
But the exact correct word is deepawali
