It’s usually after a closet purge rather than a shopping trip that I feel most at ease with my wardrobe. Thank you for continuing with this message, Jennifer! 😊
Jen! Your ten item wardrobe has honestly changed me life. I remember finding your channel around seven years ago(!) With your “how to tie a scarf” video. I was very on board when you made your first ten item wardrobe video. I was pregnant and frustrated with not finding a lot of maternity pieces I liked. I embraced the ten item wardrobe and found so much freedom in having a handful of pretty maternity pieces that I could wear and love until they were threadbare. Even after having my son, I have never looked back! I actually find myself purging if I somehow begin to accumulate too much. I also find that I save a shocking amount of money now,I can buy very good new quality pieces or gently used quality pieces and they look great, last ages, and I still have money to spare. I think even more importantly, it was the ten item wardrobe that allowed me to let go of a lot of clutter and embrace a simple life. I take great pleasure and joy in my voluntary simplicity. It has helped me in developing a humble heart, I am not distracted by things and have adopted a servant’s heart. It helped bring me closer to my Messiah, be a better mom and wife, and has quite literally CHANGED MY LIFE. Thank you for that! Celina
I agree wholeheartedly Jennifer! Freeing, economical, "green", minimal, intentional and fun are all words I'd use to describe the Ten Item Wardrobe! I can't thank you enough for sharing your concept with us!
OK...hubby and I were about to change our large laundry room into a master closet, and at great expense, move our washer and dryer and create another laundry room in another location. I have struggled with this decision. I signed up for the 10-item wardrobe course when it first came out, and with my busy life, I never finished it! I'm going to complete the course, and I am committed to making our tiny 4ft-by-5ft closet work for the two of us. How? A 10-item wardrobe of course💙...I'll keep you posted on the progress (my husband already has a 10ish item wardrobe and he doesn't even realize it...it's just the way he is...lol).
Yay Teri! I love that! If it helps just remember that in those old apartments in Paris, they rarely even have closets and usually use a stand-up wardrobe. If they can do it, we can! I love it! Sending love, Jennifer xx
I’ve always had a relatively small number of clothes as I live in England and my actual wardrobe space is not very big. However, with the dawn of fast fashion (which coincided with me having 3 young children very close in age) I started shopping cheap clothes which didn’t necessarily go well together. I discovered your channel about 5 years ago and I became fascinated with the idea of a 10 item wardrobe (which I had done years ago). I started dwindling down my clothes and I started buying more quality pieces that went well together. I also discovered what my style was and what colours suit me best. Recently I’ve started reading your blog. I went back to the beginning and I can’t stop reading it. Reading tour blog has made me better understand the concept of the ten item wardrobe and is making me want to explore even further. Also, I have recently started to learn dressmaking so I am replacing some of mine fast fashion and poor quality pieces with my “me made” clothes (as sewers like to call them) which are made with love and care using better quality fabrics and that fit my body better than any shop bought ones.
I do not have a ten item wardrobe, but since I have subscribed to your channel and read the Madame Chic books, I have become much more intentional about my wardrobe and have paired it down dramatically. I rotate my wardrobe seasonally, which means I no longer have to sort through items that are not appropriate for the season, and I also enjoy getting out my "new" clothing when a new season arrives. Another blessing of this change has been that I no longer buy things that are not really my style. I know what I wear, which items need to be replaced, or which items would enhance my wardrobe. I end up spending a lot less than I used to, even though I wasn't buying expensive items. Thank you so much for sharing what has worked for you, and helping it to work for me too!
Hello Jennifer! Thank you for sharing the reasons why the Ten Item Wardrobe is so freeing. I started reading your books and blogs as well as watching your vlogs about 2 years ago, and now carry your books in my store. After starting the 10 item wardrobe, one of the biggest things I have come to notice was that I stopped caring about clothes and trends. I now wear my clothes comfortably, and started noticing how my clothes made me feel. I'm now able to focus solely on my je n'ais ce quoi and now notice other women's sense of self more than sense of style. I appreciate my own carriage, and pay close attention when another person has that heightened sense of self. I believe that the Ten Item Wardrobe was the key in getting to this phase of my life. Keep up the wonderful work! Lara
I've practiced the 10 item wardrobe since first reading Lessons from Madame Chic about 5 years ago. It took me some time to get it right, but I persisted and wouldn't live any other way today! It is so wonderful to get dressed so easily everyday in clothes that I love.
Hi Jennifer, I do have a ten item wardrobe. I've been moving towards it since watching your channel a couple of years ago. All the advantages you mentioned are so true! Though since moving I'm sharing an armoire with my husband and it does look cramped even with my small wardrobe (walk in closets are not the norm in my country). I change my core items every season, though not all of them, since the weather is rather unpredictable. For example, in spring it can be quite cold some days and warm on others, so I have a mix of 3 medium warm items of my winter wardrobe and 7 of my summer wardrobe.
I just had a baby 6 months ago and doing my version of the ten item wardrobe ( I have a little more than 10 core items ) has made it so easy to get ready in the morning which is great cause I don't have alot of time to get ready with the baby. Great video as always!
I haven’t gotten myself to do the ten item wardrobe yet but we recently had our master bath and closet redone and it was so refreshing to only return the clothes I actually wear back into my closet! I thought of you right away. I may get there one of these days as you’ve made me so aware of useless clutter! I cut down my shoe collection, jewelry, and extras also! Thank you for the inspiration! I’m slowly beginning to march to a new rhythm and it’s refreshing!
Yes, a thousand times YES ✨🤗 Getting ready to shape my Spring wardrobe very soon here on the east coast. Our weather is still quite chilly but the warmer temps are coming!
I have been doing a ten item wardrobe since someone suggested your Ted talk to me many years back. It does cut down on having to make outfit decisions every morning and gives me a framework to think about new purchases. Sometimes, I have fewer than 10 items; sometimes, I have more, but always with the same principles.
I love the concept of the ten item wardrobe! I have been doing this for the past few years since reading your books and learning about this and I love it. It makes me feel that I am not a slave to my clothes or the trends. I better express myself through my clothing and always feel chic and comfortable.
Oh my goodness Jennifer this is so true . Having being inspired & influenced by yourself, the 10 item wardrobe is very freeing indeed in the sense you only have a select choice of clothes to choose from, therefore when you open your wardrobe to decide what up wear it takes seconds to get an outfit together. I always remember when I lived alone, I had built in wardrobes, I filled them to capacity, one particular day it took almost 30mins to decide on an outfit, I had that many clothes I tried all of them on. It was ridiculous, the very next week I adopted the 10 item wardrobe & donated all my clothes. I mean who needs 7 pairs of jeans, that are identical..... Great video Jennifer Much love Maria 💕 uk. Xxx
I testify that this is 100% true. This idea has changed my life for the better. I will never forget the day I stumbled across the ten item wardrobe video. Many thanks Jennifer. My mind now has the extra space for things that matter more and most to me.
I’m working on my 10-item wardrobe. I’m a person whose weight fluctuates a lot so changing my wardrobe is also helping me make better health decisions in my kitchen. You are tight that this idea seeps into other aspects of your life!
Thank you for your inspiring vlogs!👏🏼 For the past 5 years I started to reduce my masses of stuff. Clothes were first for I got a new wardrobe. So the old one had to be emptied. I do think that I knew the Madame Chic books already. Now I have a bigger wardrobe with far less clothes than before. One additional aspect I found out? Now, with pride of what is there, I take much better care of my clothes and it is not more work at all. This year I am working on health and weight loss, until I have reached a healthy weight and am able to keep it, so I will only exchange, what is unwearable, but I do combine. Mine is more of a 20 item Wardrobe, but I get that down. Thank you again!!🙏🏻
You are an inspiration! I’m almost completely down to a 10 item wardrobe and with 7 children and homeschooling it has been such a relief!! Plus I love the recommendation in your book on dressing for your color season, mine is a “light summer” .That helps immensely when cutting down! I had so many unflattering colors , my husband even admitted that they didn’t become me but didn’t really want to hurt my feelings!!! 😝 thanks for all you do!
I agree with all your positives you spoke about. I love that my wardrobe is only full of clothes I love and I can pick easily what to wear everyday that truly reflects my style. I am very discerning about what I buy as I know I would need to be happy wearing it on a weekly basis.
Love this! I do think someone who was asking about a set in the closet was probably talking about a closet that is more of a mini room (i.e. walk in closet) rather than a postage stamp closet. Many people have tiny closets that are not walk in. Although, that is also the beauty of the 10 item wardrobe. I used to have a closet that was 20 inches wide. it was tiny. but it didn't feel cramped because of the 10 item wardrobe. I put out of season stuff in bins in an attic area and my day to day stuff didn't feel cramped!
I'm a stay at home grandma. My daughter works and I take care of the house stuff. I just wear t shirts and jeans or shorts. I have cut this waaaay down. I'm not sure of an exact number but everything folds up nicely and fits in 1 dresser. I love it. I always have something to wear and I definitely am way more likely to put away the clean clothes, correctly.
I am so excited to make my spring wardrobe. But it is still so wintry here! I can't wait for pretty spring dresses!! You commented in this video about doing a wardrobe for each season or combining spring/summer and fall/winter. I have been combining for years, but now I am thinking that I should try not combining. I am typically using up valuable space with things that I can't wear for several months! I think for the first time I am going to do a true Pennsylvania SPRING 10 item wardrobe. As always, thanks for your inspiration!
My variation on this is a streamlined wardrobe of items that mix and match easily. The best aspect of it is: no more white elephants! Everything gets worn. Plus, it makes the transitions from season to season so much less stressful.
Hi, Mrs. Connoisseur :) I was inspired by your TedX talk. Maybe I will get down to 10 pcs. I am new to this so I'm trying. Thank you for encouraging us!
Hi there Jennifer greetings from South Africa. The ten item wardrobe has really revolutionized my life.Im currently curating a wardrobe for fall/ winter and have added only a few new pieces ( holes that I have identified) 2 new dresses 2 long sleeve tops ,1 pants and a Jacket and 2 pairs of flats as I got rid of quite a few pieces that didn't serve me any more. Now I'm content and not looking anymore for anything I have about 12 core items and a few extras to round off my winter wardrobe.I used to have a closet filled with clothes but nothing to wear ( sounds so familiar it was about 80 to 100 pieces of clothing!!!).I started incorporating the ten item wardrobe for about a year now and it truly has changed my life no more morning get ready struggles,I just pick something out of my core items or add something out of my extras and I'm ready. How freeing is that!!!
Yes, yes, yes, it is so freeing and it has saved me money, now before I buy I think about how that piece will fit into my wardrobe or needed to fill in a need in my wardrobe, stopped.me completely many times from buying. Thanks Jennifer.
Though I’m very familiar with the 10 Item Wardrobe (I’ve read several of your books and taken your ecourse), I still find reminder-videos like this very helpful! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the encouragement it's always great to have a reminder of our goals. I love dresses and sometimes struggle not to buy to many. I've working on the 10 item wardrobe for years and thanks to you I don't get to carried away!
Thanks for reminding of the benefits of having less clothes. I enjoy having a smaller wardrobe myself. It takes very little time to maintain and it cuts way back on Laundry as well. 🧺 What’s not to love about that! 😉
Hi Jennifer. I’ve been following you for several years now and the capsule wardrobe is finally sinking in...I’m slow on change...if the tortoise can be a winner then so can I. Thank you for your amazing authenticity...
I don't have a choice. My closet is teeny-tiny. That's how I found you years ago. Your method has helped me gird my choices to make the most of what little space I have. My closet actually has been my saving grace.
YES! You don't have to put so much thought into what your going to wear. It's easy to get up shower and go. Laundry is not a problem, I can go on and on lol
Great video Jennifer! I'm buying less clothing since I found your book and videos. It saves so much money. Looking forward to all your ten item wardrobe videos!
I used to have to dress up for my job but I no longer do. I gave away much of my professional wardrobe. Lately I have been trying to find my true style and continue weeding out more items. There are some things I haven’t worn in years but I still can’t let go. I guess I am afraid I won’t have enough or I might be looking for “that” item down the road. Marie Kondo would say, “Does it spark joy?” Honestly, many items don’t yet they remain in my closet. Feeling foolish and need a gentle nudge I guess.
I have done the ten item wardrobe since I was about 5, for real. I have never felt a slave to trends and even in high school I remember my friends trying on 40 different outfits before they would go out, while I would just put my outfit on and head out. No fussing, and I always felt comfortable and felt I looked great. Only when I started earning more money in adulthood did I briefly lapse into consuming more, and I became very stressed out at the thought of having too many choices. Whenever I would declutter, I would notice that it was things I had purchased at say, Anthropologie, things that weren’t timeless, that weren’t made well, that were too trendy and would not stand the test of time. So I no longer buy those types of things and only shop slow fashion. I always calculate cost per wear. If I buy a $300 dress and wear it 100 times, it only cost me $3/wear, whereas before, I would buy a $150 Anthropologie dress and maybe wear it only 5 times. I have shared your videos with so many people, as it really is the most liberating way to approach dressing - and dressing WELL.
Having a ten item wardrobe helps free me from insecurity. If I am feeling bad about myself I tend to have a hard time picking an outfit. But when I have a curated set of items, I KNOW they look good on me and it is easier to stop myself from putting myself down when I know what I am picking out is something I frequently feel confident in. If that makes sense.
the Daily Connoisseur Thank you Jennifer. I cannot remember which painting it is from. My name is actually Pauline from the UK and I have followed you for years. I own all your books and e-courses. You inspire me so much. I would love it if your books were available on audible one day. Take care. Lovely to ‘chat’ with you. ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸😊
Jennifer I love your new closet hideout it is very feminine and cosy. Maybe you could reconsider the picure just behind your head as the picture is not visible and it seems your head is framed 😉
Many of us need several wardrobes-professional office, nights-weekends; social events; outdoor activities; perhaps some expanded variations of this idea are possible?
Hi Jennifer, I loved this video! I haven't fully embraced the 10 item wardrobe yet, but I'm down to about half of the items I had a year ago. I'm planning to look through my things and select my items this weekend. Have you ever discussed managing your children's wardrobes? I'm struggling with their clothes more than mine. They are 2 and 4, and they're getting very stubborn about what they wear! They definitely have too many things, but I get nervous about letting things go when my 4 year old's preferences change weekly! I'd love to hear any insight you might have about respecting their preferences and still keeping a manageable amount of clothing. Thank you for your consistently wonderful videos!
I love the ten item wardrobe! Been doing it now for almost 4 years! I tell everyone about it :) question! In the family gardening video, what boots were you wearing? The green suede blondo or the Thursday co? You looked so chic!
I want to do the 10 item wardrobe, and I decluttered a big portion of my wardrobe, but it’s very hard to narrow down my favorites to just 10! I’m also postpartum and nursing and a few of my favorites don’t fit me anymore. I also don’t have some of the pieces that I’d really like to wear. My wardrobe is really unbalanced-I have a ton of layering pieces like jackets and cardigans but not enough blouses and dresses. It feels like my clothes are all over the place at the moment!
I understand the principle of the ten item wardrobe, as in you have ten core items, but how many items do you actually have in your wardrobe for each season if you do include all those items you call extras - t-shirts, sweaters, jackets etc?
I do 15 dresses for each season + a couple of tees and skirts. I have a few athletic outfits, used for actually working out. There is heavy overlap between each season due to weather, but I try to keep my number close to 15. I've been doing this for about 5 years and it works for me.
Jennifer, you have a huge legion of fans and I've been one of them for a number of years now, probably since 2013. So, I’ve been dancing around the actual ten-item wardrobe even though I’ve been embracing the concept for years. I have my main core items, but I keep everything else in the walk-in closet. So, this is where it gets confusing and tempting. How do you incorporate the extras? Are they nearby in storage bins or hung? I think that I’ve "partially embraced" the ten-item wardrobe and use a set of core items, but I leave the other unused pieces of clothing in my walk-in closet (one example would be having a black Real Simple multiple pants hanger that holds four pairs of slacks). I want to have that completely "freeing" feeling and it's probably true that having the other clothes I'm not using is a distraction. Being in Southern California, so many items can work between various seasons. Any tips on storage and visually seeing the "extras" so that it truly does feel like a ten-item wardrobe? I love the idea of being able to "express true style every day and look presentable always." Knowing that I feel prepared for anything that comes my way, is such a wonderful way to live. I want to improve on the way I've been doing your ten-item wardrobe and fine-tune this. I often wonder what happened to some of those pretty pieces of yours from several years ago and if they're hung elsewhere, stored or donated. Thank you, Jennifer. I'm a huge fan.
I am working toward the 10 item wardrobe, but still struggling to find the right pieces. I don’t wear as many dresses as you do, and I am wondering if dresses make it easier.
Hello, I know I'm late to comment but had a life meets theory moment yesterday and hoped you could help. I have tried to do the 10 item wardrobe but struggle to wear my 'nice' clothes all the time. Yesterday my 2 year old son had a vomiting bug and I ended up wearing an OK elastic skirt I was going to donate because I didn't want to ruin my ten items. In this case, would you still get ready and be presentable in your items? Lack of sleep is not helping! Thank you 🙏
I am a in home childcare provider so my work clothes tend to be leggings and a long top or short dress. I like dresses but do you have different dresses for church than you do for everyday?
I have followed the 10 item wardrobe for about a year now and have a very minimal wardrobe but when it comes to sweaters (pullovers not cardigans) I don't think of them as extras but as my core item. I have a beautiful baby blue 100% merino wool crewneck sweater that I wear at least 2 times a week on it's own with simple jewelry and dark wash jeans. Wouldn't that be considered a core item since it's worn on it's own and in heavy rotation?
Hello Jennifer- this might be a silly question but what are those lovely big flowers behind you in the video? My friend thought they were lovely and I’d like to get her some 😊
I WOULD LOVE TO GET TO A POINT THAT I JUST HAD THE TEN- ITEM WARDROBE. I HAVE GIVEN SO MUCH AWAY, I HAVE WASTE SO MUCH MONEY ON CLOTHS JUST TO GET HOME AND THINK WHY DID I BUY THIS. I HATE TAKING THINGS BACK SO I HAVE MORE THAN WHAT I NEED. AND YES I LOOK IN MY CLOSET AND SAY I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO WEAR. WHERE DO I START HOW DO I APPROACH THIS WARDROBE DILEMMA TO THE POINT OF JUST TEN ITEMS. YOU SEE THAT MY PROBLEM GETTING STARTED. HELP LIFE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN BATTLING WHAT TO WEAR. I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF I HAVE A STYLE. IF I DO HOW DO I SEE IT, SO PRAY FOR ME THAT I GET GOING ON THE RIGHT PATH TO FREE MYSELF OF THIS DREAD OF THE MESS I HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO GET TO THAT POINT OF FREEDOM WITH MY OH SO CROWDED CLOSET
I was feeling like you are at one point. What do you feel confident in? What kind of clothes makes you feel good about wearing them that you can afford, and you feel it is right for you? That is just a couple questions I asked myself. Example- I am more conservative and like wearing dresses and skirts that hit at the knee or below. I feel good in that. I like pretty button down blouses and feel confident in that. I am not an expert like Mrs. Scott is, but that is what I ask myself.

Any way that you could take a picture of yourself each day for a month so we can see how you are doing it? You could just show a collage of pictures.
That's great, Jodie!
I don't have a choice. My closet is teeny-tiny. That's how I found you years ago. Your method has helped me gird my choices to make the most of what little space I have. My closet actually has been my saving grace.
Yes, you have been with us for so long! I appreciate you xx
@@TheDailyConnoisseur I appreciate you too!
I believe since I began doing this it is freeing in deed.
I have decided to try the 10 item wardrobe for spring and summer. I am excited about it. I believe it will be less stressful.
I'm excited for you!
the Daily Connoisseur thank you!
I love how that viewer replied 😂
It’s true!
Thank you! xx
I'd love to hear some ideas about curating wardrobes for children! :)
Yes, this!
Hi Jennifer
I have a little question for you. Do you still have the dress you wore for the TedEx talk. I remember it so well as I really liked it. 😀
I do! I'll never get rid of that one. Saving it for my daughters :)
Thank you Jennifer - it all makes so much sense! Bless you! ❤️🙏🇬🇧
Thank you for watching! I don't know if I've ever told you this, but I love the picture you chose for your profile!
the Daily Connoisseur Thank you Jennifer. I cannot remember which painting it is from. My name is actually Pauline from the UK and I have followed you for years. I own all your books and e-courses. You inspire me so much. I would love it if your books were available on audible one day. Take care. Lovely to ‘chat’ with you. ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸😊
I feel exactly this way about the 10IW and minimalism as a whole. I only keep items that relate to this too.
Yes! Thanks for watching, Victoria!
The word "intentional" is key, right? 🙌🙌
Yes! So key
Those were the Thursday Boot co. thank you! I link them in my Amazon store
That's good that you're aware of the problem... you can easily remedy it now
My husband says since i started this it no longer looks like a tornado went thru the bedroom!
Haha! :)
I understand the principle of the ten item wardrobe, as in you have ten core items, but how many items do you actually have in your wardrobe for each season if you do include all those items you call extras - t-shirts, sweaters, jackets etc?
I have a video coming out about this very question. Stay tuned
I do 15 dresses for each season + a couple of tees and skirts. I have a few athletic outfits, used for actually working out. There is heavy overlap between each season due to weather, but I try to keep my number close to 15. I've been doing this for about 5 years and it works for me.
I love that! I have a video coming out soon that talks about how it's not about the number. That's perfect!
Beautiful video!
Dresses are easier for me but everyone is different...
I always grapple with my signature style. Romantic, Trendy, Classic. Dear Jennifer help how can I solve this problem?
You'll find it after doing the ten-item wardrobe for awhile. You'll notice what style you feel best in.
Thank you
🙏
I am a in home childcare provider so my work clothes tend to be leggings and a long top or short dress. I like dresses but do you have different dresses for church than you do for everyday?
I don't but I used to. There is no right or wrong way. I find the dresses in my core items are also appropriate dressed up.
if most people kept a 'wearing journal' they would find they wear their same favorite 10 items over and over because favorites look and feel good.
You can think of them as core items if you like! It's totally customizable.
Hello Jennifer- this might be a silly question but what are those lovely big flowers behind you in the video? My friend thought they were lovely and I’d like to get her some 😊
Hi Rosie, they are from Horchow. I have linked Horchow's faux flowers in the info box.
Ooh thankyou so much for your reply 😊
Start by giving away/donating/or tossing things that don’t fit.
You can do it, Shirley! We are rooting for you!
Why do you call it capsule?
Can I do your e-course in Germany as well or is it just for the US?
Hi Annette, the courses are available worldwide. They are online. Thank you!
where are you looking at?
Treat yourself everyday by wearing your favorites, it will put a smile on your face and you will feel special.
Intriguing, hmm.
Minimises clutter. Bev xx
