Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance?
A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the
original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound.
Q. Why are there no conductors?
A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to
recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or
violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :)
Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they
different from modern instruments?
A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and
players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning.
Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were
often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and
with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones-which
we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to
more modern music.
Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher?
A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See goo.gl/pVBNAC
Bach's chorale setting features music from his cantata BWV 140 which was performed in Leipzig on November 25th, 1731. Originally intended for the 27th Sunday after Trinity, the work is now heard most often in Advent. In 1747, Bach commissioned Johann Georg Johann Georg Schübler to engrave six organ chorales for publication-Bach loved to present his works in groups of six; Schübler engraved the books in Zella, in the forest of Thuringia.
Bach based his work on a hymn by Philipp Nicolai. When Nicolai was pastor in Westphalia, the plague killed many of his parishioners; Nicolai wrote a collection of meditations and two hymns in their memory: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, and Wie schoen leuchtet der Morgenstern. Bach's counterpoint provides a perfect accompaniment for the chorale melody.
Probably one of the best pieces Bach has ever composed.
Agree!
You hear the watchman pacing up and down in the bass line!
@@Ellie49 I never knew the bassline meant that. Thanks for the info. Learned something new today
@@VoicesofMusic it's invidious to make comparisons because I don't think anything of his was ever less than solidly excellent and most of it leaves me in slack-jawed wonderment that one human mind could write works of such staggering genius, starting at such a young age, and in such prodigious quantities!
Listen with choir
Ja. :- ))
Alabado sea Jesucristo ❤
Things like the pipe organ are why I have such a laugh at those ancient alien shows that assume that humans aren't/weren't smart enough to build such things. Humans are capable of incredible things, like building this incredible instrument.
I love the split screen showing pedals and the console. I've always said that playing an organ is like playing a piano, driving a car and piloting an airplane all at the same time.
JS Bach was God's gift to mankind. ❤
Precioso comentario. Alabado sea Jesucristo ❤!!
The performance, the organ, and the sound of the hall all match up perfectly and express the splendor of the BWV 645 to the fullest.
This is my favorite BWV 645 performance.
Favorite piece of music. Or certainly in top 5!
Let's wake up to what is real. The love underlying all things which is what Herr Bach clearly knew and lived and was trying to communicate.
All good things everyone!
The quality of the sound just wow
Tx!
I had this played at Darling Dad's funeral in 1985.
Wow! Did the organist do a good job? Not many organists would have this in their usual funeral repertoire.
What absolute beauty. I'm just tackling this piece now at the request of one of my pastors for the upcoming Advent, and this gorgeous rendition is definitely inspiring me. Thank you!!!!!
Go for it!
Tempo choice is absolutely spot-on, I feel. Kudos!
:)
agree
As a professional organ examiner, I approve!
Good one.
My late grandchild Brian was fascinated by organs, he used to keep one in his shed as a memento of what he longed to play. Sadly he lost his fingers to a badger and was quite depressed by it. Often I would catch him playing with his stumps on the organ. Bless you my child
Tempo is absolutely correct in my opinion. The Flentrop organ enhances this good performance. Bravo Walvis !
My heart was purified.
Thank you very much.
This sounds so original from the tempo, the horns up to the reverb in the piece, it's very great... Thank you so much guy
Stunning tempo - stunning articulation - stunning all around. Thank you so much, Mr. Gehrke, that just made my Advent 2014!
Wonderful playing, camera, audio and of course Bach!
Great organ and recording! Very warm and full sound.
Strepitoso Bach e strepitosa esecuzione! Complimenti anche al regista del video!
Oh my goodness! Words escape me.
Awake, the voice is calling us 😊

Bravo, maestro! 😉

wonderful Interpretation!!!!!
thank you voices of music
A perfect performance of this lovely piece IMO 😃
Many thanks!
I love this piece, on piano or organ. This is a great performance of it, and I love the split-screen segments showing the foot and finger work simultaneously.
I agree fully. The split screen yields insight as to what is taking place regarding the organist.
Amazing. Thank you for the great music.
Just beautiful.
Thank you.
Unreal.. just amazing. 35 people gave it a thumbs down!? Bizarre world!
Our high school choir sang this as a warm up piece at the begining of class in 8 part harmony! ❤love this piece!❤

Straordinario!
Wachet Auf gotta love it

This is the voice of god

Bach. Its the only thing I can say...

Listen to this late night riding through the city prolonging dawn
Happy Advent Rod, thank you so much.
Prachtig!!

This is really beautiful! Thank you for sharing! :)
Now, THAT’S What’s Up! Angelic man. Just Angelic.
Sao obras divinas
This is such a good organ
Great
like, hoping this play would be played when my last day, it is perfect and touchable and feel something.
terrific, as usual.
Maravilloso.
Zeer mooie klank !
I particularily enjoy all manner of organ music because of the great diversity of each of the surviving organs that the music is played on. I am very happy when I see church organs of the baroque era and some of the bellow organs of Eurpope still being played by great musicians for this instrument.
Thank you so much!
Hi Rod! Beautiful playing....
Yes this is as it should be well done.
Bach himself would have been pleased with this interpretation--thank you for sharing.
hope so :)
che meraviglia Bach...
I love Bach Uber alles
0:20 This was the major inspiration for the Hammond Organ accompaniment to Whiter Shade of Pale

Wonderful
Thank you!
Nice treatment!
Thank you for inserting great shots of the pedal work. As I know the melody br heart, this is what interested me the most. A lot of videos like to feature « the artist playing » ; which I turn off in no time. Great shots of the clavier work too. I found the tempo a trite fast, compared to other versions.
GREAT answer!!
I love the tempo here, really great
would love an elongated or repeated episode of the minor key
Lets not forget the magnificent wachet auf ruft uns die stimme by franz tunder!
Here in Advent 2022! Sublime 🥹
Nice recording
Well done 👍
Thank you!
amen
Me too!
Wake up, the voice calls us ... to be precise.
All stand for the National Anthem of Careg'r-honw!

My late partner's favorite Bach. He was a pianist, organist, and choir director, and this was one of his specialties, both on the organ and in its piano transcription; this was something he specifically requested be played at his memorial service. The last twenty years of his life he only played Bach, with the exception
of the occasional Chopin composition.
