Hey jeff, love your videos. As a plumber, The only problem i can see with this is that you can't have a trap drain to a 90 without 1st entering a sanitary tee. This essentially creates an s trap which is against all plumbing codes. It can still be corrected, just cut off that 90, install a 2"x1.5"×1.5" sanitary tee, install an air admittance valve or a studer vent up as high as you can get it under the countertop. Cheers!

I had a new countertop/sink installed. The plumbing was my responsibility. The old sinks had the drains dead center. The new sinks had the drains more towards the rear, plus they were deeper, ;eaving less room to work. None of the old plumbing lines or connections lined up. I had to cut it off at the wall and run all new. I wish I coulda done it this fast. 3 or 4 trips the the hardware store and a few busted knuckles later, and I finally got it. You're an inspiration, Jeff.

During my latest home renovation the granite counter top company attached my kitchen sink using a similar technique but instead of using threaded rods with nuts and washer to lift an hold the sink in place, they used 2x4 scraps in a way similar to what you did, but instead of threaded rods, they used a tie down strap with ratcheting handle to lift the sink into place and to hold it while the glue was setting. The tie down strap made it much faster to lift and hold the sink into place and it appeared much easier than using threaded rods with nuts which you used. Have you ever used tie down straps with the ratcheting handle to lift a sink in place? I would recommend that you give it a try, it eliminates the need to drill holes through the 2x4s and the length of rods would not be an issue. To use the tie down strap simply wrap the strap around the 2x4s through the sink hole and pull the extra strap material through the ratchet handle until the sink is lifted up close to the counter, once it is lifted close to the counter you can then start using the ratcheting handle to lift the sink into its final destination or for the last few inches.
Thank you for you videos, I have learned so much that has helped me remodel my sons home during the last few months. you have saved me a lot of work by teaching me how to do things right the first time with the correct tools.

    Hey there Jeff.
I watch this video and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. I worked for a granite company a while back and the way we hung out sinks was by laying a 2 by on the counter just like you have them through the drain hole we ran two white zip ties that wrapped around another smaller 2 by below the sink. We would tighten the zip ties with one hand while positioning the already siliconed sink into place. We would also flip the board on the counter onto it’s rib to tighten the compression even more.
I really liked your method as well I just thought maybe id help someone that’s in a pinch and didn’t have threaded rods on hand.

Dude, if only you knew.. there's more to plumbing than plastic and glue. Just like knowing how to nail two pieces of wood together doesn't mean you pass as a journeyman carpenter. I'm sure this was tongue in cheek but its disrespectful to those who actually dedicate themselves to the trade and are actually a skilled tradesman as opposed to a handyman

  • @billvojtech5686

Yeah, I was looking for the additional support info as well. My counter guys installed my sink with silicone and little clips that screwed into the underside of the quartz. I got a clogged drain and when drain cleaner failed, I got the plunger out. I tore the sink loose from the counter. When I got the sink, I bought a cable assembly that screws into the sides of the cabinet, but the counter guys wouldn't use it. Since I tore it off, I bought some rigid braces that bolt to the cabinet sides and angle up and support the rim. I have not installed them yet. The clips are still holding, but just barely. I sealed the gap with painters tape to keep the water from flooding the cabinet. The threaded rod/2x4 trick will be helpful when I finally fix my sink. Thanks.

Tip Jeff to roughen the ends of the waste pipe with sandpaper, emery cloth etc so that the adhesive can grip to the pipe making a really tight joint.

My experience is i am a certified maintenance engineer through operating engineers. When you attached the elbow to the drainpipe, you essentially created an S trap which could allow a syphoning situation. I would suggest instead of an elbow , use a comby tee with a short riser to terminate a syphon possibility. UPC doesn’t allow an S trap. Great video !!!

    • @jamesgarvey2090
      @jamesgarvey2090 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I believe you are mostly correct, there should be a comby tee with a short riser capped with an AAV valve if local code allows. The only thing that might make his setup different is the macerator pump, I believe some Saniflo products are considered "contained units" not requiring a vent themselves but I'm not sure if or how that might affect the pipe coming from the sink.

we usually have the hot on the left as well. but since I was using the color coded pipe i put it on the same side as the dishwasher. that way the lines don;'t cross and cause condensation and risk damaging the cabinet over time. Cheers to Denmark!

Now THAT'S a drain assembly! I went to Lowe's looking for a p trap drain assembly for my new sink. The guy hands me one of those prepackaged, thin white plastic assemblies. I've used them before, I hate them, they always leak. He said it was my only option. Thankfully, my installation has been delayed. I think I'll take a second look without their "help".

Having used the same product and never have it fail, is great and all. But try an STPE / MSP glue. It strong, easy to work with, bonds to wet surfaces and can be painted... Only downside is cost.
Actually one of the big brands here have a kitchen&bathroom caulk that is an MS polymer. But it doesn't say that on the tube. So people figure it's just an anti mold silicone like all the others... well well

Jeff when you siliconed the sink why didn't you put silicone all the way around the sink first? you only went up one inch on the sides and non in the back. I would have thought for more insurance against water damage that it would have been good to silicone on the flat first all the way around? I know you silicone d the inner edge later but because IKEA is all particle board it really can't afford any chance of a leak, right ?

Thanks for sharing , I live in a newer built home and have a standard set up under sink except there’s 2 pipes that face inward from back side of the island and both have a “cap” on them,, what are they for? My cold line hose is leaking and and I can’t tell if one of those “capped” 2” in size pipes that’s capped may be leaking also. Those 2 2”capped lines are horizontal not running vertical.

Not sure I agree with using teflon tape on those P trap union threads. For anyone confused, teflon tape is typically used on plumbing connections that rely on the threads to create the seal. If there is a rubber washer, or slip joint nut as in the case with a P trap, the threads are not what's creating the seal, ergo do not need teflon tape. However Jeff is using the tape in an unconventional way, to create more friction when bottoming out the threads. However, I don't think you want the threads to bottom out early and risk not fully squeezing the slip joint nut. And I have never had leak problems just hand tightening a P trap. Just my 2 cents, it's unnecessary. Although it's not a giant sin either way, both will function.

In the wall , was thinking to install a garberator in one but don't think it will fit there ....

    A couple of questions:
    1) Isn't the position of the P trap too low? It's nearly at the bottom of the cabinet which would make the cleanout nearly impossible to use without making a big mess. 2) How did you attach the hot and cold water lines to the cabinet so they wouldn't move around? 3) How would a garbage disposal fit into the under sink configuration you have there?

Hi Jeff! I always learn from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing such great, invaluable information! I am currently doing a home renovation for the family century-old homestead, starting with the kitchen and bathroom. For the small (13' x 12') kitchen, I'm considering saving floor design space by downsizing on some of the appliances. Namely, for the dishwasher, I'm considering installing an 18" wide unit... OR... installing an in-sink dishwasher (FOTILE 2-in-1). Since you have such extensive experience in installing kitchens, can you provide any insight as to how I can decide which is the best option?
