- In this video I will show you how I undermount a sink in a granite countertop. I will be using the Hercules system to attach the sink. This series of videos is good for the home builder or DIY remodeler. It will be especially valuable to the home owner who wants to remodel their own kitchen and wants granite countertops but can not afford them.

Great tutorial and I am definitely fixing to fashion one of those Hercules braces up myself.... They certainly don't have that at my little local hardware store but they definitely have everything I need to make a similar brace myself.

Great idea with the nuts and bolt. I used it in conjuration with a car jack to hold the vanity sink up while securing the bolt. This way, I can leave it over night safer waiting for the caulk to cure since the sink opening is offset to the back. It tends to till towards the front.
The jack idea is good and if you can wait over night it is also a good idea. Thanks for sharing.

And in two to three years, customers call me to come and fix the dropping sink because the caulk will deteriorate and the sink come loose. I put these sinks on the epoxy, and all my customers are happy. The epoxy is The future replacement will be a little bit harder, but by the time they want to replace the sink, it will be time for a complete remodeling.

Epoxy resins have a tensile strength of 5,000 to 6,000 psi and are used to bond a variety of materials.
Caulk is a sealant that can be used to make joints air and watertight and crack or peel over time.

What do you consider “time for a complete remodeling”? My 47 y/o house I bought 30 years ago has only had a 2 bathrooms remodeled and only within the last decade (and even that wouldn’t’ve happened if it weren’t for wifey). Many ppl can’t afford and.or don’t want to remodel. “If it ain’t broke”, it’s a poor financial choice until if and when you’re close to selling, as the fickle stylistic value bump starts depreciating as soon as you remodel.
CANNOT beLIEVE - ADHESIVE-ONLY (*especially* with just “silicone”) is even an option for having to support the ENTIRE weight of such a HEAVY SINK - not to MENTION the weight of it being filled with WATER and/or (for kitchen sinks) heavy DISPOSAL, DISHES and POTS! - DESPITE the existence and acceptability of relatively cheap and easy SCREW-IN mounting clips methods!? Whoever decided that was an IDIOT and/or GREEDY / CHEAP MEGA-BUILDER that had too much influence on the construction standards committee!? NO ADHESIVE lasts FOREVER!? Granted, neither do screw mounts, but they defo last HECK of a lot longer than adhesive - AND support MUCH more WEIGHT while doing so!? AND you can MUCH more easily INSPECT to see if they’re failing!? AND MUCH more easily REPAIR that failure (by tightening the screws and if necessary, injecting glue and re-drill)!?
Great video.! But I had a double sink for years and we swapped it out for a 1 bowl large sink and we love how easy it is to clean large pans. Your video is tailored to a double sink and I am not sure it applies to a center hole sink. Although, I think it would be ok for an end-drain sink.
You can still use the Hercules system, you simply have to use two kits. Each kit provides support at the bottom of the cable Vee. You simply offset the "center" sufficient to clear the drain.
Good video again. I assume the Hercules braces are only for double sinks because of the configuration I don't see how it would work on a single.
I have never installed a single bowl sink in any of my countertops. I am not sure how this would work. You may have to use 2 braces. One in the front and one in the back. I would call Braxton Bragg (1-800-575-4401) and ask them. They have a great customer support people. Hope this helps.
Simply use two kits, one offset aft of the drain and another offfset to the near side.
Seems like the whole process of attaching the sink would be much easier if you remove the granite counter and flip it over. Less time spent down on the floor working upside down against gravity, the better. Don't many people also replace a countertop when they replace sinks? I'm planning to replace the top and both sinks on an existing 60" bathroom vanity soon. Plan to attach the sinks and faucets to the top first, then put it in place and connect. Lots simpler, it would seem.
Kitchen sinks have to be installed after the top is. That is because you have to account for the weight factor and cracking factor. With a sink installed, you can not just lean it against the cabinet and tint it on. The sink is in the way now. Also you would have to lift the countertop higher to get the top and sink on the cabinet possibly cracking the top at the sink location. For smaller tops like a vanity I would still install the sink after. Granite with a hole in it for a sink is very fragile and could crack at the sink location. If that happens you just wasted all the fabrication time. Now you have to fabricate it again along with purchasing more material. I would not run that risk. I tend to error on the side of caution. I am trying to install kitchen cabinets myself. Do I need install plywood underneath 2 cm countertop for support? is 2 cm granite countertop strong enough for 16 gauge stainless steel sink to be attached just by silicon?
2cm granite countertops does not require plywood underneath for support. It is strong enough to span the openings. However, I would not try to stand on the 2cm to grab something from the top cabinets like some people would. You can not just install an under mount sink with just silicone. You will need to have a brace like I show. If it mounts on top of the granite that would be fine to use silicone. The 2cm will support it. Just FYI 2cm is not much cheaper then 3cm. I would just go with the 3cm. It is more of a standard look for a kitchen countertop. Hope this helps!!!

I'd like to use a larger undercount sink. Can the sink be supported by the plywood countertop eliminating the mounting brackets? Manufacturer recommends 1.5" on each side for brackets.
I have never done this. I would think it would, being it is 3/4 plywood. However, I am not sure.
Will these cables distort the bottom of the sink? The upper brackets (6:57) are installed just above the dadoed particle board channel. My guess is the screws would rip out upon tightening the cables
It has to be tight but not supper tight that the screws pull out. The silicone also gives some support. I have a tendency to overtighten everything and I have not pulled any screws out or deformed the sink. However I would recommended using a heavier gauge sink. thanks for watching. Hope this helped.
I am installing a sink with 60/40 bowls that are different depths. What would you suggest?

The type of silicone you used and a description on that would be nice.
I use nothing special. Just regular silicone based kitchen and bath from Home Depot. The weight of the granite and then some silicone caulk will hold it in place. The sink is also not going anywhere with the bracket in place.

@@designbuildandfix Please tell the folks that it has to be 100% silicone, there are silicone products out there that they are not 100 % silicone, also there is a product out there that is called silicone sealant which is better and has a stronger holding power. All of these counters are 25 1/2”. This includes a 1 1/2” overhang.

The wire installation is probably the dumbest and most confusing way to complete the task.
I have used the clips that have to be drilled in and the ones that are epoxied in. I have found that this is the easiest way for me to install the sink. Sorry you think it is confusing and dumb. How would you install the sink? Let me know if the way you do it is easier and less confusing.
@@designbuildandfixCustom fab brackets installed to structural framing. Shimmed to tight fit. Epoxy construction adhesive caulk seams.

That system is patently ridiculous.
It is very important to be patient when building things. If things are rushed you and I will make mistakes costing money! Especially when making a granite countertop. Another system is the clip system. I have used that system before. However, it requires a good hammer drill which I did not have at the time causing that system to be very difficult. On my next countertop I will be trying the clip system again just to compare the two. That countertop will be in the lake house teardown and rebuild series I just started putting out. This way of doing it, while completely fine, seems unnecessarily difficult. It DID however introduce me to Goclips, which he talked about briefly at 2:27
Not sure why he didn't just use those, they look extremely handy and much easier
