I'm glad she tells up the definition while still encouraging us to basically do what we want. It gives me terms to look up for inspiration while I mix and match all the styles together to develop my mental health journal/scrapbook/whatever im in the mood for. Lol

do whatever you want with your books!! it doesn't matter as long as you're creating and expressing yourself. the whole point of being creative is to break the rules. do whatever you want and call it whatever you want.

What people call "smashbooks" used to be called scrapbooks; junk journals used to be made out of actual junk and scrapbooking as an artistic endeavor was not a thing. Naming what you're doing might make it easier for internet users to find you, but it is fairly arbitrary and completely subjective...

I was thinking this to and was about to comment something similar to your comment. Because she was talking about “rules” and specific things. “Sizes”. I found the video rather annoying cos it seemed anti for what the purpose is which is to do whatever u please. Like if I want my traveling junk book to be big or small it can be and If i want to sell it like that i can. Lmao not a good video in my opinion she’s too into it on a technical level. I personally just like to go with the flow.

@@user-xk4rl8bj2n obviously you can't read. She commented above you 2Years ago that this video was to answer questions on specifics that she is constantly asked otherwise she agrees with OP. I can call a car a plane but that doesn't change the fact that it's a car.

Your work is lovely. Maybe ie got this wrong -I assumed the pages of junk journals were made from *junk mail*. The idea being that anyone on a budget can make them, and you don’t need expensive papers or materials to take part, which I think is rather lovely.

I think that junk journals started that way. Now that kind is referred to as "trashy junk journals" by some. I personally don't like that term because it sounds like it's R or X rated, or at least it sounds derogatory.....Carla H..

A lot of junk journals I see online are what we called "Scrapbooks" when I was a teenager. The book itself was usually purchased and was rather large, usually rectangular, with manila-colored "natural cotton look" paper. I began keeping that type when I was 13 and posted photos, ticket stubs of movies and/or concerts I attended, pressed corsages from special events, etc. Those books were so large in size and became cumbersome quickly so I went to the type of purchased book were the pages were slightly grooved and sticky. Photos/memorabilia were placed on the pages and a clear cover went over top. I had a LOT OF those. I used them into adulthood and would make a separate book for vacations. After moving and packing those heavy books more times than I would have liked, I took all the photos & keepsakes out, ditched the books but still have most of the personal items. NOW I can use all those things to make more light-weight junk journals. :)

So glad to discover Junk Journals! Since we are in lockdown in Ireland at the moment, I've been de clutering and found so many old receipts, birthday cards, tickets etc. I've always liked keeping these things for souvenir purposes but never had a place to organize them properly. A junk journal is perfect for this. Thanks for all your tips, can't wait to make my own! 😊

Thanks for clearing that up. I love your channel, you have some great ideas and techniques! Love that you use cheaper products, and junk too. I tend to lean towards recycling junk and kind of always have cos I can't afford to buy stuff all the time and I feel bad when I have to throw out something pretty or old, so I end up hoarding it until I can make something with it. I used to have scrap books, that I call my crap books - cos really they just hold all my crap I can't bear to chuck out. I've just started making junk journals again, I just like creating and journaling and they're just for me so I usually just put whatever in them.
Happy New Year, love, light and blessings for 2020😊

The bullet journal was designed by Ryder Carroll as a way to simply daily planners. The "bullet" term comes from the business practice of jotting "bullet points" as appt. reminders, ideas, projects, etc. to be fast, concise, and less restrictive than pre-printed planners. A good explanation of the bullet journal is on Ryder's site: bulletjournal.com/ Many people who like art and bling took the bullet journal or BuJo idea and turned them into quasi-art journals but just wanted to clarify that there was a specific original point to a BuJo, not just a junk journal planner. :)

Stylistic choices and content are what make a junk journal. Signatures are used in many traditional bookbinding methods so that can not be a descriptor. I do enjoy these examples and I like your videos.

Love this vid! I think for those critiquing the T.N. portion, she is right, the travelers notebooks were started by then Midori, now Travelers Company & they still come in those two sizes. But the term T.N. or travelers notebook has now become more widely used as a term for a cover with removable inserts which can come almost any/every size. Many companies now stock them such as Chic Sparrow, Foxy Fix, speckled Fawns, so as she said in the video, it’s important to know who your target audience is if your making T.N. inserts to sell, & the dimensions of that insert they will need. Again, loved the vid, it’s very hard when making videos to compile information & figure out how/ what to present, it was very well done! 💫

I truly enjoyed your video. It cleared up a lot of confusion I had about the various journal types. I am making 3 different journals for my daughters: One a recipe keeper for family recipes; another a memory keeper for letters a daughter wrote and received from her grandmother; and last, a greeting card organizer with room for treasured cards as well. I want to make a poetry book for my granddaughter where she can "keep a poem in a pocket". I have jeans pockets to use in it. I am struggling with how to start tho. Your mini journal has given me some ideas. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • @JansCrazyLife

There are many sizes for travelers notebook. There is a total of 7 different sizes . You can do a basic google search and they will tell you. The inserts in the tn world is just that inserts which also have a lot of different sizes . You might want to go to foxy fix wide site they are a big place most people get their tn from in the us. . So a travelers notebook is just a travelers notebook. A insert is just a insert . In the tn would. A smash book is just a brand name. And the original junk journal is made with things most people consider junk. That's is why it's called junk journal, .

It is called a bullet journal because you organize and make lists and calenders using short "bullet" words and points to track your to do's, appointments, etc. It typically us not used for journal writing. But life is about “no rules” 😀

Right. The bullet journal has evolved into this "artsy planning/journaling" thing and I think it defeats the purpose of why the bullet journal was created in the first place.

I'm artsy with them but i keep them as simple and straight-forward as possible: It's like my own personal agenda, and doesn't have too much complicated stuff i always consider pointless bc i don't actuallt use them in regular agendas, so, lol.

Man, your traveler's journals are amazing. Have you considered the elastic thread binding method for your travel journals? I made one using elastic bands around the spine to contain my pages and then i can replace them-but honestly I don't know if I will =). I have made many art journals, and I love them for practicing ideas and exploring techniques.
Flow journals, what a great idea. I must investigate that for myself, especially to get some of this stuff I have overflowing contained - thank you! Great video, and thank you for sharing.

Oh my goodness thank you so much for this!!! I've been so confused trying to figure out the differences. They all look like a journal mixed with a scrapbook to me, but at least now I understand what they are!! I subbed to you before I'm sure I did, but I wasn't so I subbed again, lol. Have a great day. Hugs 😙

I love how user friendly and clear the explainations are.lol☻☺ " This an example of an art journal that's been used... because I have used it in... This is a scrapbook & mine's been used..."" Just in case the viewer didn't realize the journal is NOT blank and it's been used & they need an explaination as WHY this qualifies as a used journal...♥♥hahah lol 😁 😂 🤣 You art journal is very pretty & very Jane Davenport♥♦♣♠

when making the books inside the binder what size is the pages? 4.5 in. X 8.5 too?

I thank you for sharing. I'm exploring some possibilities and so far so I like the smash book. I don't want to make a junk journal where I have to do a lot of sewing. However, I don't know if some folks would appreciate the work and time that goes into creating these various journals, etc. And what would one actually charge for a junk journal or smash book 🤔 just asking 🤔

In your opinion, what would you call journals that are made with other binding methods? Binder/book rings, ribbon or twine, etc. but with the same concept of using papers, ephemera, etc.

Loving your journals! There are however many sizes of travelers notebooks from the normal midori size 8.25" x 4.25", to the nano or micro size 2"x 3" (which would be pretty hard to make a junk journal insert for lol) there are even larger sizes ie. wide or cahier 8" x 5" so there are MANY different sizes of travelers notebooks it just depends on the company that makes them and if it's worth making a junk journal insert for them. I love all the info you have shared here and just wanted to share what I have learned over the last year as I make leather travelers notebooks myself and couldn't believe how many sizes that people have requested! There are even wide versions of all sizes too! Lol the possibilities are endless lol many blessings!! 😁

Meredith C I'm so happy you took the time to add this info - I had no idea there was a nano or micro size - how cute!! I would love to make inserts that tiny. Thank you for adding this info to add to the list of sizes

Meredith C I agree, traveller's notebooks can be many different sizes. I think what sets them apart from other journals is that you buy/make the TN cover- usually made of nice leather, leather substitute, or fabric and reuse this as your tn inserts get filled up. They have the elastics so you can slip the inserts in easily. Other journals have their own covers which are fixed and permanent.
TN seem to be similar to the good old Filofax of the 90s; except they had ring binders.

      @B311adonna 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Purple Pixie yes absolutely! There are just so many choices and TN's are set apart by their true customizability. Or at least that's why I love them so much anyway lol if I feel like being functional then I'll put a planner insert in my cover along with my art journal and junk journal inserts. It's all how you feel like setting up your TN that makes it such an attractive system to me.

Beautiful journals.. just to clarify something, all books are made with signatures, whether sewn, glued, or held with elastic even just a regular book from Barnes and Nobles. The exceptions are a spiral notebook, hinged page or 3 ring binder. What I'm saying is signatures don't make it a junk journal, being made by junk (junk mail, cereal boxes, tissue boxes, used envelopes etc) is what makes it a junk journal regardless of what you add to it for decoration afterwards. I know some insist you can only use junk for a junk journal, but i think you can add stickers, pretty papers and decorations to it just like it was a regular one made of chipboard or whatever.

Jess just watched this video from 2017 and wondered what you called a 3 ring binder decorated junk journal style throughout notebook?? Smaller than usual 3 ring binders in school they measure about 9x5 roughly . I've made 2 of them . I love it because it's so easy to add too and take from. Let me know what you think im waiting to post pics in Just k Trunk till I get my new phone that will make better pictures!!!
