Why Dive Watches break when you dive too deep?

- How deep can you really dive with a dive watch? We are going to use our deep sea / pressure chamber and test two diver's watch for their maximum depth / pressure! Our deep sea chamber goes all the way to 300 bars that equals 3 kilometers or 2 miles of depth so we can simulate conditions on bottom of the ocean in this experiment. And after the test we have watch maker to open the watches and have a look what stop the movements of mechanical watch.

Glass is probably 3mm thickness max.
I might be too late for this to be seen but you should try a rupert’s drop in the chamber. It may be too strong to break but it does have a bubble inside and is worth a try!

People can and do survive 30-40 bar, while working. Look up saturation diving. The record is at 701 meters. This equals 70 bar.
Love seeing these pressure experiments! Have a look at the Deep Blue Pro Sea Diver, it should be a similar price to the turtle, but rated at 1000m. Would love to see it in the chamber!

what i was able to deduce from what i have seen here is that the main weakness of the watch is the air inside because, since gases can be compressed, the outer pressure can crush the watch and either bend the back panel inwards to disrupt the mechanism or crack the glass in the front.
thus i hypothesise that a watch that filled in with a liquid, which can not be compressed, would hold up against the water pressure much better as the liquid inside the watch would support the structure from the inside.
thus i suggest your watch maker try to make watch filled with a hydrophobic liquid like mineral oil or if that's too sticky maybe something with low viscosity like diesel fuel or kerosin?
Great observation, and quite true! There are several oil-filled watches by the likes of Bell and Ross Hydromax and Sinn UX that are rated for extreme depths (e.g. the Sinn's movement is rated for 500 bar, the case for 1200 bar).
They actually already tested a watch filled with oil and it performed very well.

At any rate, you may find it interesting that the first vessel to reach the deepest point of the ocean, the "Trieste", used a float to bring it back to the surface, and this float was a tank filled with gasoline, which is about 0.75 the density of sea water.

Interesting! I wonder if Topi was able to salvage the internals from the Leijona with use of all his tools in the end. Maybe I'll go ask when I go to Uusikaupunki next time

I love this. I think it's worth remembering that the Guinness World Record scuba dive was 323 meters, and it took the guy 15 hours to come back up safely.
Saturation diving can go below 500 meters. Takes several days, if not weeks to get back up tho. They also breathe inert gas with about 3% oxygen.
@@Mp57navy (nods) That's really cool. I'm no expert, is that still considered scuba? I understand that 323 meters covers the vast majority of divers, and figured that rare person who goes deeper won't need me to remind them about anything.
These tests are pretty cool. Another fun thing to try would be to cycle them within non destructive range and see if they fail over time.
Very cool demonstration .. I see a lot of folks who question WR rating when watches don't have a threaded crown. The quartz lasted deeper than I guessed. Thanks for the video.
One thing that is good to know is that these are brand new watches so they might be not this good after many years of use
With rare exception, the threading contributes nothing to water resistance - it's to prevent the crown from getting pulled out by accident while diving.

Great video. I always suspected a screwed in crown didn't add any water resistance. Stops it being pulled out by mistake and helps protect it from knocks but water pressure will keep it tightly in place under deep water.
A Rolex Deepsea is rated at 3900m... if you can find a brave owner to lend you one!

@@FixingWithFriends I understand the concept. It would be similiar with a jack stand that is rated at a certain level. Ofcourse its precaution, but some products are rated at 20 bar but will break before or just after. So kudos to Seiko

Can you pressure dive computers? Some have been deeper than 300m. It would be interesting to see how deep they can go and at what depth the sensors would break/error.

@10:00 the watchmaker is disappointed that a diver's watch rated for 200m stopped working at 850 meters (85 bars)...he didn't seem to be joking. I think the Turtle did perfect! It would be nice to see a watch with sapphire crystal tested here. The sapphire is harder but more brittle than the Hardlex crystal in the Seiko. The expectation would be to crack at high pressures not to shatter like the Hardlex crystal did.
The thickness of the crystal is more important.
Citizen and seiko make some of the best affordable divers .reliable etc.
They lack is specs and other things compared to microbrands but they are reliable.with great history.
The anxiety of the watchmaker was hilarious, like you were putting his children in the chamber.

With the right practice and equipment a person can scuba dive down to 1000 feet or 305 meters but I think that you would probably abort the dive if your watch failed as you need that to tell how long you have been underwater and how long your decompression stops will be.
You are probably using a dive computer if you are going that deep.
I don't think the crown/stem were the failure point. I think the steam bent because the movement was pushed backed when the crystal failed. Since the case back of the Seiko held up so well I would be very interested to see what would happen if you installed a new movement and a thick domed crystal.
That Seiko Turtle is only ISO 6425 rated for 200 meters so reaching 800 meters before it stops is really impressive.
Probably nobody dives 200m, no one will notice
@@GuaranaMontana The current record for the deepest a human has ever dived was set in 2014 at 332.35m by Ahmed Gabr , and on his wrist was a bulbous Charmex CX Swiss Military watch rated to 6,000m.

Watchmakers, well really anyone who works on things at such small dimensions with such low tolerances, always amaze me.
I have perma-caffeine shakes in my hands and any time I work on anything under a half inch or so it's a funky adventure..

Love these there is a cheap dive watch π ratio freediver which claims to go to 1000m I this that would be a very interesting test😊
You should try a Sinn UX, it's oil filled and can to at least 500 bar. Or so they say.. ;)
They already tested an oil filled watch in a previous episode.
Great video. Could you please do video with a hydro-modded, oil filled watch? You could finally prove or disprove if filling your watch with oil makes any improvement to water resistance performance.
Congratulations for the video I would like you to review the h2o kalmar 2 10 miles model a grade 5 titanium sub with a unique bezel and strap a sub tested at 25300m made in germany ... I as a love of extreme divers could not resist and the I bought!!
The sapphire will pop w/o a valve. Also comparing an automatic movement to a quartz. The quartz can obviously take more pressure w/o a release valve. Not that it matters much at that depth :)

Would be good to see two cameras showing the front and back of the watches at the same time. See if the back bowing in pops the glass at the front of the cheap watch. Can clearly tell the flat glass on the Seiko imploded at the centre. Just curious to see.

I heard a story of a submarine captain who had a Rolex.
To test it he attached it to the coming tower of the submarine and took it down to the pressure rating.
It broke, as he had an official record of the depth Rolex gave him a new one.
Nice to see an expert do a tear down of the damage.
You still need to get a watch from Suunto a well known Finnish brand, I have 2 myself.

I am quite happy with my Seiko 5 series that is rated for 50m! I don't dive so *I* am not rated for 50m! My favorite "cheap" watch is a Casio G-shock MT-G that is 30+ years old. It's rated to 200m. Was about $80.00US when new. Solar. Just went and pulled it out of a drawer after 15 years or so and it is still keeping time and date! Funny thing: I always have to take about six links out of new watches to make them fit. I hate a watch that is loose on the arm! AND I understand some German as well as English. It seems Sheisse is a universal term! ;)

Seems like the ones with better case-backs will be higher on the list, to be sure. The general consensus in 2021 if you want Sapphire is to get an Orient Kamasu. The Seiko are good, but getting over-priced. If you can't swing the sapphire crystal, the entry-level Orient should be just as road-worthy. Err, sea-worthy.

The Casio Marlín mvd-106 it's an excellent "cheap" (60 dlls) watch, it's 20 bar or 200mts waterproof and nobody yet has tested this Casio
because water's viscosity , if gasckets of screew crown and back resist at 10 bars... its solidity of glass/back than determine superior resistance.
Crush a deep sea chamber with another deep sea chamber? Done press and press. Be only fitting.
