I’m at my lowest of lows right now battling stage four cancer, but your videos are amongst the very few I actually can enjoy watching. Something about watch collecting seems to sooth and calm my runaway train of a mind. Life is short, and it’s great to see you enjoying every moment. Thanks for such upbeat and positive content.
I just want to say I watched your video on my 4k television, and your footage brings these watches to life. I feel like I can enjoy them without having to own them. Also, your 2001: A space odyssey reference made me laugh out loud!
TGV you always release honest content that is lovely to see. I think one thing that all of us appreciate is the fact that you do it for the hobby not for the fame, money, viewerships, etc. I stopped watching many TH-camrs because they became part of the swamp of watch collecting as they fell to the watch "enthusiast" cliches that are far too numerous to count. However, your videos are always from the heart which we all appreciate. Grazie mille per tutto.
I wouldn't say you're envious. But I'm 100% positive that if you had a tons of money, you would have a different spending habit with regards to watches.
The honour is all mine amico mio. Thank you for the years of inspiration. I hope one day, if I ever make it west to meet you. Onwards and ever upwards! T.
It's refreshing to hear the acknowledgement that we should all work towards enjoying what we have, and that as watch enthusiasts we really are a tiny minority in the world. Not only to be fortunate enough to own watches, but to even have the freedom to enjoy life. Thinking about how many people on this planet can't do that is sobering to say the least.
"Watches as Investments" has to be one of the dumbest, idiotic, most irresponsible, bits of advice the Swiss Watch Mafia and Watch Idiot Savants parrot at each other. It's consumerism under another name. Oh, but the watch doubled in price over ten years! Yeah, dude, money halved in value over the same period of time so you're selling it for the same price you bought it for. You could have left that cash in a bank or literally _any_ type of investment product and would have been ahead. Instead of you lost money buying a watch that does nothing better than a Seiko for 1/10th the price.
Nice to see my favorite Microphone-TH-camr under my favorite Watch-TH-camrs Channel. You are both awesome beyond the topics! Thanks for the great work.
I do enjoy several other watch channels on YT, but really, there’s nobody out there who are able to approach the hobby in such a philosophical and at the same time enjoyable way as you. Add to that the production values of your videos, and we have something truly unique. All the best, T!
The way I see my watch journey and what brings me joy in owning a timepiece is having only one watch that will follow me everywhere. It is a rational decision which brings a lot of peace and enjoyment. First and foremost I am rather immune to new watch releases and hypes which are becoming more and more like fast, but not cheap fashion or Apple product releases. One of the reasons I entered world of watches and started exploring it is the timelesness and counter-consumerism ethos as these are very rare objects that can last very long and can be serviced and fixed. Somewhat similiar to good leather, properly made, goodyear welted shoes. Having one watch also creates special bond because, this one piece is with me trough good, bad and ugly so it really becomes my daily sidekick, everywhere and everytime. From beach to work, from hiking to traveling. Having more that one makes me feel cluttered. It works for me and of course I am not saying this is the only truth that exists😊
Just as I’m starting to get burned out on watch content and watches in general, you stepped in to save the day with this gem of a segment! ✨🙏✨In this world of over consumption and lack of appreciation for the things we own, we all need to take a little time to admire the things we already own. Personally, I’m just so burned out hearing about the brands new releases, or an “influencers” big watch purchase. Truly, there is no end to this insatiable hobby.😵💫
This video is an absolute breath of fresh air! You're the only one I know in this game that speaks of appreciating what you've already got. That's a big one for me and why I limit my collection to just a few beloved pieces. Thank you for such excellent content and perspective!🙏
Always refreshing to hear your rational recalibration of the reality-distortion-field that is the luxury-watch hype-machine and the TH-camrs that feed it (as they insist they're just giving their honest opinions ;) )
Tristano, you’re establishing yourself (proudly) as the genius outsider of the watch world reviewers. I believe no one comes close to your high quality content, not from the production point of view, and following you for years now- I admire your way of evolving, and dedication to the “way”. I’m starting to find more and more life and moral education in your vids-essays. Plus the watch content as itself is simply the best. Kipping it as always- Onwards and upwards mate🤝🏻
I'm really tired of all the attention paid exclusively to luxury brands. It really sours the entire culture. Imagine if car enthusiasts treated Ferrari like Rolex and everything else less expensive, from muscle cars to lowriders, was looked down upon. Car guys are always having a hell of a lot more fun than watch guys for a reason. Edit: It was such a bizarre coincidence that you showed the blue Tag Heuer Carrera Glassbox, my grail, when you were talking about saving up and delying gratification.
That very same model of mudman, i got from my mother to my birthday when i was 10 years old, it was my first watch and it followed me for 16 years now. Brings me happiness every time i see it and im glad somebody else also sees is it for something more than just some plastic. Love from Norway!
I'm still wearing the G-Shock my mom gave me 19 years ago! I think about it any time I consider a watch sold based on toughness and durability. There's no way any luxury watch can beat a G-Shock on that front.
Fantastic video and message. I was feeling overwhelmed by all of the new watch releases this week and your video helped me remember how blessed I am to have the timepieces that I have and to cherish them. Thank you!
yep, downsized to 3 watches. Daily Office - Helm Vanuatu Daily Casual - Casio WS1600H Special Occasion/Sentimental - Bulova Lunar Pilot I sold the rest and it has honestly been very liberating.
At this point I’m basically at 2 watches my MI Casio and Seiko Turtle. I keep looking at new ones but can’t find anything I’d want to wear over my turtle besides a Willard but since they have the same dna I really don’t want to spend $1000 haha. Anyways thanks for the video again TGV! Oh and my calculator watch I can’t not wear it while rocking out to some Huey Lewis hahah
I mostly keep up with Tag Heuer, the new Monaco split second chrono is insane, 4 layers of sapphire crystal, parts of the watch take 30 hours to make. Yes it costs a fortune and i would never even buy a watch that cost a tenth of that, but wow do i love the horology..
I'd just left a comment elsewhere which I think aligns nicely with many of the ideas expressed in this video: The unrelenting consumerist pursuit of status is little more than a fatal hamster wheel best suited for abject fools and the chronically average.
My Seamaster is my go to watch I just have always loved it. So much so I gave my nephew my Rolex as a family Heirloom. I still have many others but The Seamaster is the one on my wrist the most and Im good with that
Bought me a SKMEI - Shir Kuh Mei - "Beautiful Moments in Time". (粤, 闽, 客). The 1123 digital retro watch. Put it on a NATO. Asian watches never fit. It displays the right time, no bling, functional. Love it :)
I went on a 3 week vacation, one where I decided against carrying around expensive watches. I bought a Citizen Promaster Land at a deep discount, put it on a rubber strap, and wore the heck out of it hiking and even kayaking. It performed very well, in very wet conditions, and wearing it to dinner on a Milanese strap stood out from the ubiquitous Apple Ultras the financially comfortable traveler seems to wear these days. I now get how you can really appreciate a watch that is not 'haute horologie' but just does a job, like a G-Shock or the DW290, and gets associated with events in your life.
Love it TGV. Some great pointers, especially the last one. As always, love seeing the variety of watches in your vids. The Accutron tease at the end was a cracking ending, what a beauty!
Potentially one of the most important Gentry videos to date. This show is absolutely jam packed with absolute facts. I'm glad it's not just me that's HATES all of the w&w bullshit 🙏
I personally can not get into the Casio plastic watches. But then I am 74 and very old school. I can see military or construction people needing to have a rugged and cheap watch for work. That makes sense. As an old retired Italian/American physician, I wish you a long life and no future respiratory situations. Bravo again.
my collection starts with casio up to longines , could worth nothing to some but each watch has a sentimental value to me , especially the 5 Tissot watches i have . collecting is about me not to impress others as you said . by the way that tissot you have is absolutely fabulous.
A brilliant video. Great thoughts on collecting. But most of all the last bit on savoring life resonated with me having had 4 serious surgical procedures and life threatening circumstances over the last year I truly am on the same page. I enjoy my little watch collection a great deal, but also every day is a treasure.
I work in a heavy industrial setting as a quality engineer for a heavy equipment manufacturer. In the past, i worked offshore oil and gas. I LOVE my Victorinox quartz watches! They are built like tanks and keep amazing time. Id love to see a review on some of the more “work friendly” and utilitarian models.
I think it's particularly bad this year. I have the feeling that a lot of TH-camrs are trying so hard to find something interesting at this year's watches and womders and then these stupid predictions, it just gets worse and worse every year. But, there are also TH-camrs like you who are independent, serious and without any hype. Thank you! 🚀
Thank you Sebastian, interesting to hear that, I'm strangely more intrigued to see how bad it was! 😅😅🤣🤣🤣 Horological schadenfreude perhaps?!? Great to hear from you my friend, Best regards, TGV
You always crack me up man! 😂😂😂 I totally agree with you 100% I recently got myself a vintage Seiko 7A28 QUARTZ in amazing conditions and I am so happy. It is a piece of history and it is (for me) gorgeous! Don’t care what anyone says about it. It makes me happy to have it on my collection and wrist. Galileo would approve!! 😂 oh and by the way, amazing what you say in the last part of the video. I didn’t know you had that kind of experience. Le piccole grandi cose! Enjoy!!
..were on the same page...I disappeared down the rabbit hole, took the blue pill, woke up, sold the Rolex/Omega etc, took stock and began again with a totally different approach......."Born to Dare' - another ruddy Black Bay......do me a favour Tudor !!
Duuude…. While I’m a cinephile who greatly appreciate your nods, references and backgrounds bits from films in your apartment and a music nerd that appreciates how you slide in a reference or a sample from a classic or a deep cut, and to say nothing of your sly slips of class-conscious vocabulary…. I really appreciate your philosophy and approach to life in general. I bet we could chop it up over a coffee and figure out everything that’s wrong with the world and how to fix it very that same session… hahaha Keep living the way you do. I’ll keep enjoying your content at the top of my list. -L
Thank you very much my friend. I very much appreciate that. I am sure we would have a lot in common, life is too short just to be all about one thing right? It is people like you I make videos for. Onwards, upwards and best regards, TGV
Being on TH-cam since the beginning of it, for interests of many subjects. You are the most enjoyable host of them all. knowledge compared with positivity and passion. very inspiring and entertaining content Congratulazioni!!!
The book Thus Spake Zarathustra you showed features one of my favorite paintings, the "Wanderer above the Sea of fog" by Caspar David Friedrich. Beautiful and emotionally evoking painting. You can find it in Hamburg, Germany.
The whole industry has lost its way unfortunately . What used to be a hobby has now become the stock market. Consumerism at its highest level. Price increases 2-4 times per year. Timepieces of 5k, only 6 years ago, are now 10k. The brands have become lazy and with a change of a dial colour or a slight new tone of a bezel , they are done and a new collection is born, some of the “stories” are completely invented and the only thing that matters now is the quarterly dividends for the shareholders. The big companies are ran by accountants and all originality has gone out the window. Meanwhile we are stuck in a rat race of “buy, buy, buy and buy” …. I’m glad this video came about as it’s an honest look on reality and we should all go back to having a few pieces we enjoy and cherish, instead of filling boxes with timepieces we don’t need nor wear, just because watches & wonders tries to entice us in getting “another one”. It’s actually sad to see what has happened to the industry. It used to be fun. Now it’s just Wall Street and the “watches” have become “stocks”. Buy what you want and enjoy, not what the media pushes on to you. It’s a hobby, not a business. Don’t get sucked in cause that is exactly what these corporations get wealthy on…. Keep it real and keep it yours. Well done on this video and content. Keep them coming. Fantastic work. Enjoy life. Enjoy the hobby. Enjoy you
'Savour what you have' is good advice for almost every situation. Watch-wise, I recently got a 1970s art deco-styled, oval Anker automatic beauty. Not worth much at all, but it's really distinctive, and I don't feel like I'm going to run into anyone wearing anything similar. I absolutely love looking at it, wearing it, and I feel like it's starting to influence everything else I wear, in a good way. I enjoy all my watches, but this one feels like it really 'suits' me and my style. I can't take it off, and it's one of the first watches I've owned that I feel like I'll want to keep forever. Time will tell if that remains true, but it's made me want to step away from watch-buying for a while, because what am I going to find that I'm more likely to want to wear than this? So now maybe that's the standard I need to aspire to when I look at potential additions to the collection. Can it outshine my favourite? If not, perhaps I don't need it. Consumption for its own sake is not good for the soul or the bank balance.
I do lust after High horology new timepeices but I cannot let go of the beautiful vintages masterpieces (my budget is minimal) that are so cheap compared to buying new. Due to this fact I have learnt to services/fix vintage watches and get more thrill/enjoyment from bringing a watch back to life than spending a fortune on 1 new watch. I do buy cheap new beater watches for the rough and tumble of living day to day but nothing gives me more pleasure than wearing an vintage watch bought for pennies as a basket case ready for the bin(in some cases) and getting it running and enjoying its history with all its battle scares etc when doing either desk/office work or at nightime relaxing. Dunno hard to describe but this hobby with the passion I have has motivated me to acquire skills I never thought I could do....with the help of the internet and TGV motivation amongst others as well.
What a dynamic duo! I can honestly say that I just purchased my "new" (Mido GMT Sea Star, black dial) and now I am considering your take, and collect a few vintage and used watches...Maybe next on my list is a used Omega Gen 1 Seamaster w/the blue dial. Thanks again for your content and perspectives. It's refreshing.
after owning many, many watches..from Rolex to Luminox..I have chipped away to 5 watches that I like and wear....no more buying timepieces for me...its too xpensive..
I have a 6 watch collection too: Beater: Christopher Ward C60 Chrono Keep forever collectible: Original LE Verde/Azzurro Bel Canto's (counts as one watch imho 😁) Daily: 1) Bremont H1 Fury blue 2) Omega SMP steel/Sedna gold blue on bracelet 3) Tudor BB GMT S&G Luxury special occasion (with no possibility of being seen by an underclass hoodie scumbag): Full Sedna gold SMP blue on an OEM blue gator strap with Sedna gold clasp Classic Dawn of the Dead clip...kudos!
Completely agree TGV. I just purchased a Certina DS DIVER 43. Ceramic Bezel,300m Water Resistant, excellent solid milled Clasp with sliding adjustment, and a signed crown all for £600. Although it has to be serviced by Certina because of the lazer adjustment required it is superb value for money.
Watches are 100% jewelry for me .I own about 50 watches ,none more than $400 and the majority under $300. I have about 60% quartz. SEIKO is my favorite brand. my favorite watches being chronograph, then flight and dive watches. The busier the better. The UG got me started about seven years ago. I don’t buy any watches now I just enjoy the ones I have. SEIKO IS KING !!!

Excellent watch video so many great references to classic videos great production
Hey! I have that same Firenze poster. Nice taste.
I wouldn't say you're envious. But I'm 100% positive that if you had a tons of money, you would have a different spending habit with regards to watches.
Great vid as always.
the black and white Rolex "news" section was too bloody funny. LMAO
It is and the part that makes it even more funny is if you compare to the coverage of W&W or Baserlworld from any year it's basically that.
I mean, I like new releases. That way, everyone can get exactly what they crave. Or most people. Some.
it is EXACTLY what I am seeing on youtube!

"Horological orgy of consumerist idolatry by collectively wandering at watches," was not a sentence I expected to hear today. Masterful narration.
Whoreology

Thank you Sebastian, interesting to hear that, I'm strangely more intrigued to see how bad it was! 😅😅🤣🤣🤣 Horological schadenfreude perhaps?!?
Great to hear from you my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
Great, great, great video TGV. authentic, positive, educational yet fun. thank you for your content
Pushing others down doesn't bring you higher.
👏👏👏👏 So true, thank you. Onwards and e upwards!
Best regards,

You always crack me up man! 😂😂😂 I totally agree with you 100% I recently got myself a vintage Seiko 7A28 QUARTZ in amazing conditions and I am so happy. It is a piece of history and it is (for me) gorgeous! Don’t care what anyone says about it. It makes me happy to have it on my collection and wrist. Galileo would approve!! 😂 oh and by the way, amazing what you say in the last part of the video. I didn’t know you had that kind of experience. Le piccole grandi cose! Enjoy!!
Your vocabulary is impressive.... Then I remember it's your second language and I feel a bit lazy... XD
..were on the same page...I disappeared down the rabbit hole, took the blue pill, woke up, sold the Rolex/Omega etc, took stock and began again with a totally different approach......."Born to Dare' - another ruddy Black Bay......do me a favour Tudor !!
I bet we could chop it up over a coffee and figure out everything that’s wrong with the world and how to fix it very that same session… hahaha
Keep living the way you do. I’ll keep enjoying your content at the top of my list.

Thank you very much my friend. I very much appreciate that. I am sure we would have a lot in common, life is too short just to be all about one thing right? It is people like you I make videos for.
Onwards, upwards and best regards,
TGV
Post Script
On the note of le cinéma… if you haven’t seen ‘Tampopo’, consider adding it to your watchlist.
already in my collection 😉🥂 you have great taste!
This episode was a masterpiece TGV, I have been watching for 4 years and you get better every single month !!!!
Bloody marvellous! A breath of fresh air.
TGV the realist in the YT universe!
Best watch commentary on TH-cam
Do it TGV, call them out by name 😈
Sure, have you got a few billion to lend me for the legal team? 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you my friend, O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
What a dynamic duo! I can honestly say that I just purchased my "new" (Mido GMT Sea Star, black dial) and now I am considering your take, and collect a few vintage and used watches...Maybe next on my list is a used Omega Gen 1 Seamaster w/the blue dial. Thanks again for your content and perspectives. It's refreshing.
NATO straps, “nope” squared.
Lol. Exactly.
after owning many, many watches..from Rolex to Luminox..I have chipped away to 5 watches that I like and wear....no more buying timepieces for me...its too xpensive..
I'm a strap maker... I've made more than 30 straps for my maurice lacroix alone... Yes...maurice lacroix ML37 phase de lune annual calendar...
I have a 6 watch collection too:
Beater: Christopher Ward C60 Chrono
Keep forever collectible: Original LE Verde/Azzurro Bel Canto's (counts as one watch imho 😁)
Daily: 1) Bremont H1 Fury blue 2) Omega SMP steel/Sedna gold blue on bracelet 3) Tudor BB GMT S&G
Luxury special occasion (with no possibility of being seen by an underclass hoodie scumbag): Full Sedna gold SMP blue on an OEM blue gator strap with Sedna gold clasp
Classic Dawn of the Dead clip...kudos!
Brilliant.
Your best video yet.
Find yourself and having found yourself be yourself.
Thank you so much, deeply, deeply appreciated. Onwards, upwards and best regards,
TGV
