How Long Should Your Shorts Be? A Visual Guide to Men's Shorts Length

  • How long should men’s shorts be? 9 inches? 7 inches? 5 inches? Should they go past your knees? How short is too short? What about slim fit shorts?
In this guide, I’ll show you what shorts with different inseams look like, and I’ll tell you what I think is the perfect length for most men. Also, we’ll talk about an often overlooked aspect of men’s shorts - the width of the leg (this is actually more important than the inseam length).
Also, troll comments will be deleted. If you don't like seeing men's legs, that's your problem, and you should probably talk to a therapist about it ;)

Thanks for the content! When it comes to comparing the leg opening, a decent amount of companies include that particular measurement in the product dimensions/specifications sections. Would be great for the comparison between all the different slim fit shorts!
Also, I think it is important to bring up the fact that leg length and body proportions between torso and legs factors in greatly to the over look with shorts. As 5'7" man whose more torso than legs, anything past 5 inches really starts to bring attention to that fact.
Anyways, thanks again for all the quality content you've put out through the years!

Excellent video! I'm glad that you addressed negative comments about shorter length shorts. I'm old enough to remember shorts made in the 70s and early 80s. I grew up in Southern California back then and during the summer, I wore OP (Ocean Pacific) shorts everywhere as did most men. Shorts usually had an inseam length of at least 5", or less. Since everyone wore them well into the early 90s, I have to wonder why the change in mindset came about. I get that cargo shorts do cover a bit more, but when did men become so sheepish about showing a bit of thigh? Thanks for the info on the different lengths, fit and style.

Because I biked, ran, hiked….my legs have always been one of my attributes. While I grew out of the “Magnum PI-Ocean Pacific corduroy hot pants” look of the ‘80s, I NEVER adopted the gangbanger - jams look that followed. I tried, but I just couldn’t wear them comfortably….I always felt what’s the point of wearing extremely long shorts? I’m 6’1”, 180lbs….I sport 5” shorts (Patagonia Stand ups) for summer work around the house and 5” tech shorts for running; 7” every day shorts….and maybe 9” for dress shorts. I’m not sure if you remember them….they were pretty popular in the 80s….those OP (Ocean Pacific) corduroy shorts…maybe a 5” inseam, cargo pockets. Funny thing….when in high school in Florida….wore ‘em all summer long. Middle of my senior year, my dad was transferred from the Cape to White Sands in southern New Mexico. It was culture shock for my brothers, sister and me….my high school in Florida had a skateboard and a surfing team, the one in NM had a rodeo team!! There was actually a hitching post out front-no kidding-no one used it as far as I saw, but it was there. And there were always fights between redneck cowboy kids and Mescalero Apache kids trucked down from the reservation. I always thought that odd, those Indian kids rode horses as if born on one….and in some instances, better than the cowboy kids. Kids are stupid everywhere, I guess…..but probably get that prejudice crap from their parents. In Florida, it was poor black kids, some of who were my friends, as we were in NJROTC and played basketball together, as were Indian kids in New Mexico. My parents would not tolerate that prejudice s-t….anyway, amigo, thank you for your comment! I wish you well!

Some retailers online here in the UK are already selling quite a lot of 5-7 inches inseam and even 3-4 ones on ASOS. Ps. you get my vote for your 5 inches inseam. Happy Days!

There's also the option of going to a large department store and picking out a pair of men's slacks, pants, jeans, etc (always a selection on steep clearance markdowns!) and since these usually have more variety of options such as subtle plaids or micro-herringbone weave, different materials, colors, slim fits, you know what you are getting and then take them to a seamstress or just cut and hem yourself. I do it all the time and have become quite good at it myself.

I think it depends on the setting. During vacation or leisurely engagements, short-shorts are awesome. In urban settings, however, it can look out of place and juvenile. If it goes past knees: unflattering and old-mannish. At the end of the day, people should find a pair of shorts that are made out of a good material, fit well, suit their taste and the occasion, and are overall pleasing to the eye.

Got a pair of 7" inseam shorts just a few days before this video because I didn't like that my shorts always covered my kneecap. My shorts are all three or four years old so I figured it's a good time to try something new and take some time to make a good purchase. I did feel a little uncomfortable seeing myself in them since I was so used to the longer shorts but they undeniably fit much better so I'm looking forward to wearing them around.

Viewed as I do not understand modern 'shorts'. imo 3'' is a bit long. Why do women get to have 'proper' shorts and guys get given 'not shorts' that flap around the leg annoyingly? (particularly on a bike) This is the 21stC! - what is with this insane 'modesty' thing which seems to apply solely to men? I am late 50s and find 3'' rugby shorts the most comfortable. I do not care what people think - I think longer shorts are annoying to wear, and look silly because they are not practical. I have great legs. They do not have a tan mark just above the knee.

I prefer the 5"" shorts as I find them so comfortable and enjoy the feeling of fresh air on my legs. However they do 'ride up' when you sit down and sometimes depending on the situation like in a restaraunt, I am conscious of exposing rather too much bare flesh. I find myself pulling them down to try to cover more of my thighs!

@@BrockMcGoff It may sound obvious but for me wearing shorts is all about showing my legs. And that means exposing quite a lot of bare skin on my thighs. For me this feels just so comfortable. I don't like below the knee shorts and don't get me started on those 3-quarter length pants things that flap around a few inches above your ankles. What's all that about then? It's like you can't make up you mind as to whether to wear shorts or long pants and just go for something inbetween that ends up looking ridiculous.

As a girl who regularly enjoys wearing short skirts and short dresses, this comment made me laugh. Not in a bad or judgmental way, but because I can relate to it. Especially the part about "pulling it down to cover more of your thighs." Since guys usually wear pants or knee-length shorts, they usually don't think about this sort of thing. But more recently with more and more guys wearing shorter 5 inch inseam shorts, they're finally getting to experience what it's like for a girl to wear a mini skirt/mini dress, lol. I think it's a good thing, as it gives guys and girls more to relate to together, haha.

To be perfectly honest, that original "dig" in the video was crass, particularly the time spent. Idiots in YT comments are just that, fashion preferences notwithstanding. I prefer larger 8in-to-11in (even 12) shorts that are outdoor oriented. I don't have any "true" cargos remaining (but for one that are "painting shorts") but they're still with pockets and very nicely cut. It is for function (staying cool) whilst still having some protection as well as a bit of storage when out playing. The shorter, more fashion oriented shorts rarely-to-never offer this and have an East-coast tennis court look IMO. If I'm going out in public and need to look presentable, it will be in a light summer pant; a *short* is never what I'd choose.
