I like shorts 3-5 inches inseam. Never liked those long baggies.[Sweat pants] Shorts are what they are meant to be like as they were back in the 1960s, 70s ,80s and partly the 90s. Anything longer then 5 inches inseam and going down towards its knees are classed as The Bermudas! Some retailers online here in the UK are already selling quite a lot of 5-7 inches inseam and even 3-4 ones on ASOS. Ps. you get my vote for your 5 inches inseam. Happy Days!

When adult men wear long baggy shorts it reminds me of a little kid or really old school. Most of the time i noticed that shorter shorts (5-7in) make a mans quads look bigger from all angles. A good looking thigh gives a stronger appearance. It also gives them longer legs and that is usually a compliment. I enjoy the 5in but i have also worn 3in before at times and its a bit more risky but i think its great.

I’m a 66 year old….retired from military and law enforcement careers, which required that I stay active and in relatively good shape. Because I biked, ran, hiked….my legs have always been one of my attributes. While I grew out of the “Magnum PI-Ocean Pacific corduroy hot pants” look of the ‘80s, I NEVER adopted the gangbanger - jams look that followed. I tried, but I just couldn’t wear them comfortably….I always felt what’s the point of wearing extremely long shorts? I’m 6’1”, 180lbs….I sport 5” shorts (Patagonia Stand ups) for summer work around the house and 5” tech shorts for running; 7” every day shorts….and maybe 9” for dress shorts. I’m not sure if you remember them….they were pretty popular in the 80s….those OP (Ocean Pacific) corduroy shorts…maybe a 5” inseam, cargo pockets. Funny thing….when in high school in Florida….wore ‘em all summer long. Middle of my senior year, my dad was transferred from the Cape to White Sands in southern New Mexico. It was culture shock for my brothers, sister and me….my high school in Florida had a skateboard and a surfing team, the one in NM had a rodeo team!! There was actually a hitching post out front-no kidding-no one used it as far as I saw, but it was there. And there were always fights between redneck cowboy kids and Mescalero Apache kids trucked down from the reservation. I always thought that odd, those Indian kids rode horses as if born on one….and in some instances, better than the cowboy kids. Kids are stupid everywhere, I guess…..but probably get that prejudice crap from their parents. In Florida, it was poor black kids, some of who were my friends, as we were in NJROTC and played basketball together, as were Indian kids in New Mexico. My parents would not tolerate that prejudice s-t….anyway, amigo, thank you for your comment! I wish you well!

But more recently with more and more guys wearing shorter 5 inch inseam shorts, they're finally getting to experience what it's like for a girl to wear a mini skirt/mini dress, lol. If it goes past knees: unflattering and old-mannish. At the end of the day, people should find a pair of shorts that are made out of a good material, fit well, suit their taste and the occasion, and are overall pleasing to the eye.

5 inch shorts are mid-length. I have a variety of lengths, from 1 inch inseam to knee-length, but my preference actually is 3-6 inches. (Actually, I do have one baggy pair that covers the knees, but I haven't worn it in ages.) If they cover any part of the knee, they're not shorts, they're capris.

Also, I think it is important to bring up the fact that leg length and body proportions between torso and legs factors in greatly to the over look with shorts. As 5'7" man whose more torso than legs, anything past 5 inches really starts to bring attention to that fact.

This summer, I've been wearing shorts for the gym and everyday wear. I tried the 7-inch, but it just didn't feel or look right on me. The 5-inch is my "sweet spot". Although they're advertised as 5-inch, the inseam is closer to 6-inch. I normally wear compression shorts with my 5-inch shorts (or they're built in). If the shorts ride up, the compression shorts are exposed, but it gives me the "athletic look".

It's an age and fitness determination. Men who are overweight or older should avoid shorts altogether. Men who are younger and in shape should wear shorter shorts. (Side note: In the 80s, a 2" inseam length was the standard, so shorts lengths have as much to do with contemporary standards as they do with men who wear them.) It seems that the lengths of shorts are returning to a shorter length. I would suggest that men (and women) who wear shorts make a frank personal assessment as to whether a particular pair are age or body-type appropriate.
